It was time for a new website to reflect our technologically advanced practice.

The father and daughter Doctors of Dental Surgery partners at Chimon Family Dentistry in Albertson, NY, have launched their practice’s new website to coincide with newly expanded digital and esthetic services available on the North Shore of Long Island. Dr. Morris Chimon has provided comprehensive general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and restorative dentistry to patients for more than 35 years. Dr. Jenna Chimon joined him in the family-owned practice in 2019.

“It was time for a new website to reflect our technologically advanced practice,” Dr. Morris Chimon said. “We’ve transitioned to a digital dental practice over the past several years. This includes many updates, ranging from electronic medical records to state-of-the-art, low-radiation Cone Beam 3D Imaging, soft tissue lasers, electronic apex (root) locators, and oral cancer screenings using specialized lights,” he explained.

The digital transition and investments in technology lead to better diagnostic and treatment outcomes while offering greater patient comfort. “We offer noise-canceling headphones, digital intraoral cameras, and chairside televisions to reduce stress and help patients relax,” Dr. Jenna Chimon said.

In addition to providing preventative and diagnostic treatments, Chimon Family Dentistry is also a leading provider of dental implants, implant-supported dental bridges, and mini dental implants, which replace missing teeth using less invasive techniques.

The longstanding dental practice also offers comprehensive cosmetic dental treatments such as Invisalign, teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, cosmetic bonding, and stain/white spot removal with microabrasion. Their esthetic services include Botox injections for pain caused by TMJ disorders and for cosmetic wrinkle reduction. Juvederm® and Versa® dermal fillers are also offered to replace lost volume in the lips and face and to minimize wrinkles and lines around the mouth and nose.

“We aim to provide our patients with all technologies, treatments, and advanced techniques to help them obtain and maintain excellent oral health. Likewise, we know patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth and smile may experience self-esteem and self-confidence issues. So we offer the best cosmetic and esthetic treatments to help them feel better about their smiles. It’s an honor and a privilege to do so,” Dr. Morris Chimon said.

Maryvale Announces New Program for Homeless Mothers and Their Young Children

New Program for Homeless Mothers and Their Young Children

Maryvale’s Seton House

The opening of Seton House not only represents a new chapter for Maryvale but more importantly, a safe and supportive home for young single mothers to focus on building a positive and healthy future for themselves and their children.

Maryvale today announced the opening of Seton House, their new temporary housing program specifically designed for mothers and their young children, who are facing homelessness.

Maryvale is Los Angeles County’s longest-operating children’s charity. Established in 1856 by the Daughters of Charity, Maryvale was created to address the needs of orphaned and abandoned children in Los Angeles and today provides a range of mental health and early childhood education services. With the addition of Seton House, Maryvale extends its mission of community-based assistance.

“The opening of Seton House not only represents a new chapter for Maryvale but more importantly, a safe and supportive home for young single mothers to focus on building a positive and healthy future for themselves and their children. We know the need is great and Seton House allows us to lift up one individual, one family, and one community at a time,” said Steve Gunther, MSW, President & Chief Executive Officer.

Seton House was developed to provide safe, temporary housing for single mothers, with up to two children each under the age of 10, who are facing homelessness. Eligible families receive up to six months of services which include weekly group therapy sessions, weekly individual counseling, and assistance with developing the necessary life skills to achieve long-term employment and permanent housing.

Along with individual resident rooms, families have access to a computer room, kitchen, multipurpose room, outdoor play yard, TV room, and children’s playroom. Seton House establishes a compassionate environment where mothers can focus on personal development while learning life skills to sustain a positive and productive lifestyle for themselves and their children.

The opening of Seton House is timely because it serves a growing population in need of such services and support. According to the Los Angeles Mission, “Up to 50% of the homeless population in Los Angeles are made up of women, and many of them are single moms.” The community need is recognized by Maryvale and its generous partners, Health Net, Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation, The Rose Hills Foundation, and The Los Angeles Orphanage Guild; all of whose donations and support helped to bring Seton House into existence.

“Our temporary housing program at Seton House is such a necessary service for our community as we, unfortunately, continue to see the rise in unhoused families with very limited access to community support and resources. We are immensely excited to open our doors and welcome mothers and children into a space where they can feel safe, valued, and supported as they do the work to change the trajectory of their lives, and the lives of their children,” stated Crystal Overstreet, Program Manager, Seton House.

Already Seton House has delivered benefits. One of Seton House’s residents stated, “I am so excited to be a resident at Seton House, where I am able to have safe childcare for my son, while I work to find employment and finish my education.”

Warriors Heart Alumni and Former Green Beret Ted Lanier announces ‘1000 Miles Healing Warriors Challenge’ to raise awareness of Peer-to-Peer Healing Program

[ad_1]

Warriors Heart Running Team Challenge to raise awareness that help is available for military veterans and first responders struggling with addiction and PTSD and to pick up that 1000 Pound Phone and ask for help

Warriors Heart Running Team L to R: Aaron Marshalek, Mike Fiocca & Ted Lanier challenges warriors to run 1000 Miles to raise awareness that help is out there for peers struggling with addiction & PTSD

Former Green Beret, Warriors Heart Alumni and recovered drug addict/alcoholic Ted Lanier chose 1,000 miles as the running challenge in sync with urging his fellow warriors (military, veterans and first responders) to “pick up that ‘1000-pound phone’ and ask for help.”

In sync with September’s National Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Month, Former Green Beret, Warriors Heart Alumni, and recovered drug addict/alcoholic Ted Lanier announces a “1000 Miles Healing Warriors Challenge” to raise awareness of how Warriors Heart’s peer-to-peer healing program is saving lives and removing the stigma and shame of seeking help for addiction, PTSD and co-occurring issues. After getting sober 5.5 years ago at Warriors Heart, Lanier’s new mission is to help heal his fellow warriors (military, veterans, and first responders), and let them know about this unique “warriors healing warriors” program.

Lanier chose 1,000 miles as the running challenge in sync with urging his fellow warriors to “pick up that ‘1000-pound phone’ and ask for help.” After overcoming a long addiction to alcohol and drugs, Lanier got sober April 20, 2017, at Warriors Heart, which he says “saved his life.” It’s the first and ONLY private and accredited peer-to-peer healing center in the U.S. that is exclusively for warriors struggling with addiction, PTSD, mild TBI, depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-occurring issues.

For the past 18 months, Lanier has been leading a Warriors Heart team that has run 12 marathons throughout the North Carolina area, which includes alumni, supporters, and fellow veterans. Together, they have run over 3,300 miles, and Lanier has personally run over 780 miles in mountain and marathon runs. This running team carries the Warriors Heart flag and wears Warriors Heart t-shirts to remind frontline protectors that help is available.

Warriors Heart has a full continuum of care (Detox, In-Patient, Outpatient, Sober Living, and Aftercare), to help warriors rebuild their lives with new tools and replace bad habits with good habits, which includes athletics (gym, hiking, running, jiu jitsu and more).

Lanier explains why running is so healing for him, “To me, it’s all about challenges. With challenge, brings change and that change is the positivity that drives me. It strengthens me. It gives me hope. It fuels my mind and body allowing me to accomplish anything I desire and to inspire others to overcome insurmountable odds as well.”

Lanier describes his fellow teammates Aaron Marshalek and Mike Fiocca as; “Both of these guys have over a year of sobriety, have become accomplished mountain trail marathon runners, and are crushing life in general!”

Fellow Warriors Heart Alumni, Veteran, and Team Member Aaron Marshalek has run 1,346 miles, and reflects, “Running has become my main recovery mechanism. It makes it even better when I have fellow Warriors Heart Alumni to run with. Running has provided me an avenue to focus on my physical health as well as my mental health while being outside in nature with like-minded individuals all trying to make it one step at a time, one day at a time.”

Senior Medical Sergeant at U.S. Army and Team Member Mike Fiocca has run 1,203 miles, and explains his personal WHY behind this running challenge; “The races for me are all about inspiring and motivating others. Training for me is aimed at my race objective, but it really helps me exercise good habits and discipline every day. It also reminds me that with each day, if we are not actively living, then we are by default passively dying. I choose to live, I choose to dream, I choose to achieve and inspire others to do the same.”

Lanier’s Warriors Heart running team’s next marathon is planned for December 2022, and he encourages warriors and supporters to accept his challenge to run 1000 miles to raise awareness of Warriors Heart’s “Strength Through Healing” program.

For anyone who accepts Lanier’s challenge, please post your running photos and video on social media and tag @warriorshearthealing on Instagram or Warriors Heart on Facebook – and use the hashtag #1000MilesHealingWarriorsChallenge or #1000MilesWarriorsHealingWarriors or #1000PoundPhone or visit https://www.warriorsheart.com/challenge

Global study, supported by Alzheimer’s Association, aims to shed light on COVID-19’s impact on the brain

“I have lots of hope because I was a very active person.” — Debra Gutierrez, long COVID survivor

Debra Gutierrez of Von Ormy, Texas, near San Antonio has been an active person all her life. An ophthalmology technician at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), she works in a clinic that sees scores of patients daily. But things changed for her in the summer of 2020, the early days of the pandemic before COVID-19 vaccines were available.

“My diagnosis with COVID was July 3, 2020,” Gutierrez, 49, said. “The main problem I had was massive migraines along with loss of smell, dizzy spells, body aches and blurry vision in my right eye.”

Although she never required hospitalization and was back at work after a month, her recovery was just beginning. In fact, she still doesn’t feel like she did prior to infection.

“I have episodes of disorientation, of not knowing where I am, including when I’m driving,” she said. “The longest episode was about 15 minutes. I had to grab my phone to give me directions home, because I had no idea where I was.”

Gutierrez keeps a diary of her symptoms and in May 2022 noticed that she started to stutter. “I never stuttered before,” she said.

The fog in her thinking is persistent, unending. “I tend to blank out even when I’m at work, and I’ve been doing this type of job for 26 years. I forget what I’m doing,” she said.

Gabriel de Erausquin, MD, PhD, professor of neurology in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, sees Gutierrez in his clinic. He prescribed medication to calm her when episodes occur.

De Erausquin is with UT Health San Antonio’s Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, where one of the projects he leads is the Alzheimer’s Association Consortium on Chronic Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This is an initiative of research and clinical teams from around the world. Scientific leaders, including the Alzheimer’s Association and representatives from more than 25 countries, are working together with technical guidance from the World Health Organization to track the long-term impact of SARS-CoV-2 (also known as novel coronavirus, COVID-19) on the brain.

Debra Gutierrez is among the South Texas participants who will be evaluated at UT Health San Antonio upon entering the study and at specific points in time. Neuropsychological tests that assess aspects of learning and memory will be administered, and study volunteers will undergo brain imaging on the world’s most powerful MRI systems.

“No available evidence supports the notion that cognitive impairment after SARS-CoV-2 infection is a form of dementia, whether it is Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias or some other cause,” Dr. de Erausquin said. “The Alzheimer’s Association Consortium multinational initiative will provide data to answer this question as clearly as possible in a globally diverse set of participants.”

Persistent loss of smell is associated with brain changes. The olfactory bulb, which contains the brain cells that react to smell, is primarily where the COVID-19 virus enters the nervous system, Dr. de Erausquin said. Building on this information, the consortium aims to understand the effects that SARS-CoV-2 triggers in the brain.

In a peer-reviewed paper published Sept. 22 in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions, the consortium authors note, “it behooves the scientific and medical community to attempt to understand the molecular and/or systemic factors linking COVID-19 to neurologic illness, both short and long term.”

The article provides the roadmap for how those who wish to use the methodology developed by this large global research community will achieve this ambitious undertaking across multiple continents, languages and cultures.

Harmonization strategies and flexible study designs offer the possibility to include large samples of under‐represented racial and ethnic groups, Dr. de Erausquin said. Sharing of information, data and knowledge will enable future studies to have data generated from these diverse groups for years to come.

Debra Gutierrez, who still works full time, has a supportive husband, six adult sons and stepsons, and six grandchildren. Her experience, and the experiences of thousands around the world, will paint a fuller picture of what is happening in the brain post-COVID. Understanding how to address the cognitive issues caused by viral infections could lead to improved outcomes in the future.

“I was running marathons before, and I was working outside several days a week,” Gutierrez said. “I have lots of hope because I was a very active person.”

Funding for the consortium is provided in part by the Alzheimer’s Association.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio(UT Health San Antonio), a primary driver for San Antonio’s $42.4 billion health care and biosciences sector, is the largest research university in South Texas with an annual research portfolio of $350 million. Driving substantial economic impact with its five professional schools, a diverse workforce of more than 7,000, an annual operating budget of more than $1 billion and a clinical practice that provides more than 2 million patient visits each year, UT Health San Antonio plans to add more than 1,500 higher-wage jobs over the next five years to serve San Antonio, Bexar County and South Texas.
