Researchers use Virtual Reality to Teach Street-Crossing Skills to Children with Autism

Immersive virtual reality technology can be used to create a safe and realistic environment that closely matches the natural setting

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) found an immersive virtual reality training environment to be effective in teaching street-crossing skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Due to the symptoms associated with ASD, diagnosed individuals often face an increased risk of injury. Therefore, it is important to target safety skills in ASD treatment.

There are challenges to teaching safety skills in clinical settings. Safety skills learned in contrived settings may be difficult for individuals with ASD to apply in the natural environment, which is critical for a potentially life-saving skill. While safety skills may generalize more easily if taught in the natural environment, these environments, such as a street crosswalk, may be hazardous.

“Virtual reality may offer the advantages of both contrived and natural environment training settings,” said Dennis Dixon, Ph.D., Chief Clinical Officer. “Immersive virtual reality technology can be used to create a safe and realistic environment that closely matches the natural setting.”

Study participants included three children with ASD, ages 4 to 10 years old. The immersive virtual reality environment consisted of 360-degree videos, recorded on streets in the participants’ community. The participants interacted with these videos using a head-mounted device. Behavioral teaching strategies, including prompting, reinforcement, and corrective feedback, were used to teach the participants to identify whether it was safe to cross the street in the virtual environment. Ultimately, all three participants mastered this skill in both the virtual environment and on real streets in their community.

The current study found an immersive virtual reality training environment to be effective in teaching children with ASD to identify when it is safe to cross the street. The technology used in this study may be a practical option to implement in clinical settings because it was relatively cost effective and required essentially no software development.

“This technology may be useful for targeting other skills as well,” said CJ Miyake, M.Ed., BCBA, Research Manager. “In addition to safety skills that are dangerous to teach in the natural environment, the motion-capture technology, used in this study to teach participants to look left and right for passing cars, may be valuable for teaching other skills that involve gestures.”

With proper oversight, immersive virtual reality technology appears to be a promising tool for ASD treatment. Additional research is warranted.

The Trevor Project and PUMA Partner to Support & Promote LGBTQ Inclusivity in Athletic Environments

The Trevor Project

The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people, today announced global sports company PUMA will donate $1 million over three years to the organization. The donation will help the more than 1.8 million LGBTQ young people estimated to seriously consider suicide annually in the United States, by supporting LGBTQ-inclusive environments in athletic facilities, as well as foster positive mental health outcomes for young LGBTQ athletes.

As part of PUMA’s $1 million donation, The Trevor Project will develop and provide comprehensive educational resources that focus on LGBTQ mental health and intersectional inclusivity in sports. The donation also will advocate for safe spaces that are supportive of gender identity and sexual orientation, and strengthen mental health outcomes for LGBTQ youth athletes.

“In our National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, 71% of LGBTQ youth reported discrimination due to either their sexual orientation or gender identity—that discrimination extends into sports and athletics, and is one of the many reasons that LGBTQ young people in crisis reach out to The Trevor Project,” said Amit Paley, CEO & Executive Director of The Trevor Project. “We are grateful to PUMA for their partnership in raising awareness on the unique challenges that LGBTQ youth face in athletics and the correlating impact on their mental health, and for promoting The Trevor Project as an ongoing resource to young LGBTQ athletes across the country.”

In addition, PUMA will elevate The Trevor Project’s crisis services to its network of youth sports clubs, coaches, and sports professionals.

“At PUMA, we believe everyone who wants to play sports, can and should be a part of the game, which is why we are proud to support The Trevor Project and their efforts in the LGBTQ community,” said PUMA’s Global Director of Brand and Marketing Adam Petrick. “Together, over the next three years, we hope to create a lasting impact for LGBTQ young people and youth athletes whether it’s on the field or in the locker room.”

PUMA and The Trevor Project will also explore additional ways to collaborate and fundraise for the organization. For more information about The Trevor Project, visit http://www.thetrevorproject.org.

Spiritual or Physical” tackles the mental issue of panic attacks and how it impacts one’s faith in God.

News Image

“When Panic Attacks Your Faith: Spiritual or Physical”: a perspicacious read on panic attacks in both personal and spiritual lives that shape one’s perception of life and devotion to the Lord. “When Panic Attacks Your Faith: Spiritual or Physical” is the creation of published author A. T. Sharpe, a loving family man, a devoted follower of God, and a former US Army Veteran.

Sharpe shares, “The church deals with a lot of issues on a spiritual level, and I believe as a Christian we need the Spirit of God to help us with all of the problems we face each day. There are thousands of Christians who suffer from mental illness such as panic attacks every day, but this issue is not a topic the church or most Christians are willing to talk about due to the stigma associated with mental illness. Panic attacks are real and can be debilitating to those who suffer daily. How do we deal with this issue? Is it spiritual or is it physical? What do we do when panic attacks our faith?

“I remember when I experienced my first panic attack, and I didn’t have any idea what was going on with me at the time. Not long after, I began to experience these debilitating attacks four or five times a day, and my life began to spiral out of control. There were days I couldn’t get to work without an attack or get through my college classes without an attack. As a believer, my faith was being tested and I needed to be free of these attacks and get my life back but what do I do? Do I seek spiritual help or mental health help? I believe God can heal any sickness or disease and I believe he can do it in more than one way.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, A. T. Sharpe’s new book hopes to shatter the stigma against people suffering from mental illness and inspire in them a compassionate understanding of how this illness affects them and those around them.

Describing moments of the attacks, the author relates his experiences to how the Christian faith works so readers can prepare themselves to cope with tests that hamper their spiritual growth and wellness.

More Than 500 Wichita-Area Youth Have Benefited from New, Life-Saving Psychiatric Treatment

News Image

“Our mission particularly focuses on keeping people first—ensuring that we’re providing the utmost treatment and care to all of our clients and families.” Juston White, KVC Hospitals Wichita Executive Director

Since opening in July 2019, more than 500 Wichita-area youth have benefited from life-saving psychiatric treatment. Some of the ways KVC has helped these children include teaching them how to identify and talk about their emotions, helping them develop skills for coping with stress and trauma, and providing resources that will support them long after they leave our treatment center. For an inside look at the new hospital and to hear from community partners, watch this video.

Here are some of the services available to children while in our care:

  • Family Therapy: Therapists work to improve communication, enhance a family’s ability to help their child, and provide a better understanding of mental health issues and behavioral concerns.
  • Individual Therapy: Our licensed therapists help each child identify and understand their interpersonal challenges and learn new skills to deal with stress.
  • Group Therapy: Our therapists work with a group of clients on improving social skills, enhancing coping skills and strengthening communication. This may take place in a traditional sense or using expressive therapies, such as art, music or recreation.
  • Medication Management: Each child is assessed by a licensed physician and medication will be prescribed, as needed, and with parental/guardian permission, to best provide for symptomatic improvement.
  • Family Education: Our treatment team provides parents/guardians with information and tools that will help them continue supporting their child once they leave our facility. For example, medication management, de-escalation techniques, cool-down procedures and emotion regulation.
  • Behavioral Education: Our pro-social behavior program is designed to promote responsibility and self-esteem, measure motivation and enhance positive choices.
  • Psycho-Educational and Group Activities: Trained behavioral health professionals implement activities such as anger management training, social skills development, empathy training, recreational exercise and much more.
  • Learning Labs: Youth participate in a variety of educational activities to help them better understand and strengthen their brains.

“Our mission particularly focuses on keeping people first—ensuring that we’re providing the utmost treatment and care to all of our clients and families,” said Juston White, KVC Hospitals Wichita, Executive Director. “It’s just a reality that many of us, youth and also adults, need additional support from time to time.”
