New Report on Addressing the Loneliness Crisis Through the Power of Pets

Mars Petcare and the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), with support from a broad consortium of partners, today released a report that offers a roadmap for advancing research and best practices that address how human-animal interaction can serve as an important solution to the growing epidemic of loneliness and social isolation.

“There is increasing evidence that pets can play an important role in helping people feel less lonely and more socially connected,” said Steven Feldman, Executive Director, HABRI. “Together with the leadership of Mars Petcare and a group of other experts and stakeholders, HABRI will work to address the crisis of loneliness in our society with the power of the human-animal bond.”

Loneliness currently affects three in five Americans and 9 million people in the United Kingdom. Loneliness can be as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes per day, making it a serious threat to public health. Mars Petcare and HABRI surveyed 2,000 people in the United States, finding that 85 percent of respondents believe interaction with companion animals can help reduce loneliness.

“We have a responsibility to take the scientific exploration further when evidence to date shows us that pets can be part of addressing such a significant societal issue,” commented Rena Crumplen, Global Vice President of Research and Development, Mars Petcare. “It’s important that we undertake rigorous studies to understand how companion animals may provide a benefit for those suffering from conditions associated with social isolation and loneliness.”

The new report, Addressing the Social Isolation and Loneliness Epidemic with the Power of Companion Animals, brings forward the recommendations from the Summit on Social Isolation and Companion Animals, along with the continued work of a broad consortium of human health advocates, mental health practitioners, veterinarians and human-animal interaction researchers. The report outlines the following three-pronged approach to facilitate the role of HAI and pet ownership in addressing social isolation and loneliness:

1. Advance High-Quality Research: Advance human-animal interaction (HAI) research to glean a better understanding for whom and under what circumstances interactions with companion animals may be effective for alleviating social isolation and loneliness.

2. Help Address Barriers and Provide Solutions: Identify ways to remove barriers to access for pet ownership and human-animal interaction for those who may face hurdles and stand to benefit most – including older adults and people with mental health challenges.

3. Share and Support the Proliferation of Best Practices: Support and help advance best practices in HAI and for companion animal ownership that help prevent, reduce and mitigate social isolation and loneliness. Ensure animal-assisted interventions in approved settings – including hospitals, nursing homes and within our communities – are grounded in science, meet high standards of animal welfare, and have the broadest societal impact.

Organizations that have contributed to the report, through participation in the Summit and the ongoing consortium working groups, include:

Highmark to Launch First Technology-Enabled Opioid Treatment Program in West Virginia

Through this program, we will be able to partner with clinicians so that our members receive the kind of comprehensive, accessible OUD treatment that puts them on a path to long-term recovery-Dr. Caesar DeLeo, VP and executive medical director of strategic initiatives, Highmark

Highmark West Virginia announced today that its members now have access to a comprehensive, technology-enabled opioid use disorder (OUD) program that is the first of its kind in the state and one of the first of its kind in the nation. The program, offered in partnership with Bright Heart Health, is designed to extend OUD treatment in rural and underserved areas and address a critical shortage of available medication–assisted treatment (MAT) therapy.

“MAT therapy is considered the gold standard of care for opioid use disorder, but there are many MAT ‘deserts’ across West Virginia,” says Dr. Caesar DeLeo, vice president and executive medical director of strategic initiatives for Highmark. “In these areas, patients have extremely limited access to evidence-based OUD treatment and may face significant wait times or transportation challenges. Clinicians are overextended. Through this program, we will be able to partner with clinicians so that our members receive the kind of comprehensive, accessible OUD treatment that puts them on a path to long-term recovery.”

Members can access services and meet on-demand with medical staff and counselors through a smart phone, tablet, or computer. Following an initial intake and assessment process, members are connected to a multidisciplinary care team that includes a physician, therapist, case manager, care manager and a wellness coach. The program offers individualized treatment plans and MAT that allows individuals to stop abusing opioids without experiencing powerful drug cravings or severe withdrawal symptoms. With the member’s permission, Bright Heart Health keeps the member’s care team updated on their progress and shares performance metrics.

Members may access Bright Heart Health services via self-referral or through a warm hand-off, a process of transitioning a patient with a substance use disorder from an intercept point, such as an emergency department, to a treatment provider once the patient is stable.

More than 90 percent of patients are retained in OUD treatment one month after beginning services, according to Bright Heart Health. More than 90 percent of patients are negative for opioids within 90 days of beginning treatment, and more than 85 percent are negative for other stimulants and sedatives. Health-related costs are reduced by $20,000 annually when opioid- dependent patients are on MAT.

The collaboration with Bright Heart Health continues Highmark’s leadership in responding to the opioid crisis with a comprehensive approach that emphasizes primary prevention, safe prescribing and community supports.

“We are excited about the partnership and the opportunity to work with Highmark,” says Jon Ciampi, president of Bright Heart Heath. “Highmark is proactive in addressing the needs of their members, and recognizing barriers patients face when seeking care. Through this relationship, and the Highmark network, we hope to reach individuals who have been unable to access care due to location or other barriers.”

Last month, Highmark announced that its employer-based members have access to new virtual education and advocacy tools that combat stigma associated with OUD and promote recovery in the workplace. These new resources, which are a value-added service for Highmark group customers in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, are offered in partnership with Shatterproof. Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the U.S.

Through Shatterproof, Highmark’s employer-based members can engage in brief, interactive education modules that explore the science of opioid use disorder; environmental and genetic risk factors; the dangers of opioids; signs, symptoms and evidence-based treatment options; ways to help individuals and families challenged by OUD; and success stories of individuals who are in recovery.

Throughout the past three years, Highmark and the Highmark Foundation have provided more than $3 million to community organizations and programs fighting the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware.

As part of its continued commitment to address the opioid epidemic and in conjunction with broader national and local efforts to fight substance use disorder, Blue Cross Blue Shield companies across the country are launching the Substance Use Resource Center, which will include a call center and dedicated web site. For individuals seeking treatment for a substance use disorder, navigating treatment options and knowing how to find care they can trust is a daunting task. The Substance Use Resource Center was developed to help those impacted by substance use find quality-based resources for care close to home from a source they can trust.

DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences Study Demonstrates Stress-Modulating Effects of Candidate Probiotics in Mouse Model of Chronic Stress

DuPont and Amylgen Logos

These promising results may have future implications in the development of novel probiotic supplements which may offer a benefit to humans feeling the negative effects of daily stress. We are excited to explore whether these results can be translated to humans.

A collaborative research study between DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences and Amylgen, a research center which specializes in rodent models of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disease, analyzed the effects of differing probiotic strains on the behaviors and neuroendocrine responses of chronically stressed mice.

This study builds on the established notion that changes in gut microbiota affect mood and cognition by delving deeper and examining the performance of different strains in comparison to each other.

The Study Design

This study took a systematic approach to test the efficacy of 12 candidate probiotics strains from 10 species/subspecies of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus on stressed mice. The strains were tested across four screening experiments and the three most promising strains were re-tested to validate the results. The mice were orally administered the individual probiotic strains for five weeks, during which a three-week daily chronic restraint stress procedure was imposed on mice within stressed groups. On the final week of probiotic intervention and post the three-week stress procedure, all mice entered a behavioral test paradigm to measure stress-related behaviors. Furthermore, in the validation experiment, corticosterone and adrenocorticotrophic hormones were analyzed to measure the neuroendocrine response to stress, as well as additional tissue samples collected for further analyses. Of the 12 candidate probiotics, Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37®, Lactobacillus plantarum LP12407, Lactobacillus plantarum LP12418, and Lactobacillus plantarum LP12151 prevented stress-associated anxiety- and depression-related behaviors from developing compared with chronically stressed mice in the placebo group. In addition, Lpc-37®, LP12407 and LP12418 prevented stress-associated deficits in cognitive function from developing.

Fantastic Opportunities for Novel Approaches to Anxiety and Depression

“Up to now, we have been using our rodent models for screening classical drugs aiming at psychiatric conditions,” stated Francois Roman, Ph.D., Scientific Board Member and Co-founder of Amylgen.

“The therapeutic improvement for the treatment of psychiatric diseases using the classical drug discovery process has been very disappointing and has not been able yet to bring satisfactory solutions for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. Novel approaches such as the one described in this paper opens fantastic opportunities for the discovery of new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of these disorders conducive to stress that need to be clinically translated.”

“This study demonstrated that this pre-clinical model of stress is suitable for screening candidate probiotic strains for psychological health benefits toward preventing stress-related disruptions in behavior from developing. This study highlighted the extent of screening required to discover successful candidate probiotic strains which could influence gut-brain axis communication,” said Elaine Patterson, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences.

“Out of the 12 candidate probiotic strains tested, we identified three candidate strains which prevented all behavioral impairments from developing in mice caused by chronic daily restraint stress. These promising results may have future implications in the development of novel probiotic supplements which may offer a benefit to humans feeling the negative effects of daily stress. We are excited to explore whether these results can be translated to humans. We also demonstrated unique strain-specific effects concerning potential mechanistic pathways worth exploring in follow-up studies, and perhaps even in different models.”

Rochester-based Nadarra Lighting, Ready to Sell Decorative OLED Light Fixtures, as a Channel Partner of OLEDWorks

OLEDWorks - leading manufacturer od OLED light technology

We need to be aware of how light impacts us beyond allowing us to see, but how it impacts our emotional well-being. We design light fixtures, which utilize OLED technology, so we can be a lighting solution that not only looks good, but also makes you feel good.

Nadarra Lighting (“Nadarra”), a start-up lighting designer and manufacturer, headquartered in Rochester, NY, has developed modern, eye-catching, decorative light fixtures, geared towards the hospitality industry, which utilize OLED light panels. Nadarra made a conscious decision to utilize OLED light panels, due to the technology’s wellness component. The formation of this new company leverages partnerships in Rochester’s backyard. Nadarra will source its OLED light panels exclusively from OLEDWorks, as a member of their Channel Partner Program. The Channel Partner Program provides early adopters expanded access to OLEDWorks’ OLED light technology, engineering mindshare, marketing and sales advocacy, and more. Nadarra is among the first companies in the United States, exclusively dedicated to manufacturing decorative light fixtures that use OLED light panels.

“Nadarra Lighting was an early adopter of OLED light and has an impressive portfolio of OLED luminaires,” says John Rubens, Vice President of Customer Success at OLEDWorks. “We’ve always believed in the potential for OLED applications in the hospitality space, and Nadarra has brought that belief to life. We’re excited to see what we can do together this year as our partnership expands, and they develop new fixtures in unique designs.”

Nadarra has designed and manufactured specification-grade, decorative OLED light fixtures, geared towards the hospitality industry, with plans to expand product and market offerings in upcoming years. The company is focused on the health and wellness of light. Nadarra believes that light needs to be understood as something that can directly impact emotional and physical well-being. With health and wellness being a main component of the hospitality and tourism market, Nadarra saw a need to develop light fixtures that could assist interior designers, architects, owner/operators, and other key hospitality personnel, to bring health and wellness to their guests, through light design. OLED technology poses no blue light risk to your eyes, and is circadian rhythm friendly, leading to better overall health and well-being. The company has future plans to target other health and wellness industries, such as senior living, and long-term care facilities.

In addition to the health and wellness of light, Nadarra is passionate about the creative freedom that OLED’s unique form factor brings to interior designers, architects and other professionals in the hospitality industry. All of Nadarra’s current OLED light fixtures are designed to behave as eye-catching focal points within a space. Nadarra believes that OLED technology, and LED technology can work well together. That the combination of the two will provide for an unforgettable end-user experience. By utilizing Nadarra’s OLED light fixtures, alongside LED ambient lighting, designers now have another tool to address issues with light, and enhance the customer/guest experience.

Bill McDonnell, founder of Nadarra Lighting is passionate about creating a commercial space for OLED light technology. Bill states, “lighting impacts us in so many ways throughout our day. We need to be aware of how light impacts us beyond allowing us to see, but how it impacts our emotional well-being. Believe it or not, lighting is very personal and needs to be viewed and applied in our life that way. We design light fixtures, which utilize OLED technology, so we can be a lighting solution that not only looks good, but also makes you feel good.”

The Formation of Nadarra comes as OLED technology continues to gain traction in the market. New research and development is allowing for continued advancement in streamlining processes and procedures, and ultimately leading to a lower price point. OLED was first invented at Kodak in 1987 by chemists Ching W. Tang and Steven Van Slyke. In recent years, OLEDWorks has been an industry leader in continued research and advancement in the OLED field. “It was an obvious choice to exclusively partner with OLEDWorks for our OLED light panels,” states McDonnell. “Not only are they the industry leader, producing the highest quality OLED light panels in the world, they are a true story of entrepreneurship and teamwork, right in Rochester.”

ActX Genomic Decision Support becomes an Epic App Orchard contributor

“We are excited to be joining Epic’s App Orchard marketplace, making it easier for health systems to find and integrate the ActX Genomic Service” – Andrew Ury, M.D., ActX CEO

ActX, an industry leader in precision medicine, has joined the Epic App Orchard marketplace. The addition of the ActX Genomic Service provides Epic customers with an option to access genomics in everyday patient care using a sophisticated decision support platform.

ActX delivers clinically actionable insights that facilitate personalized prescribing and actionable risk management based on the patient’s unique genetic profile, all within the provider’s workflow. Medication orders are checked in the background against the patient’s genetics, and the physician is alerted if a medication is likely to be ineffective, cause side effects, or need a dosing adjustment. Directly in the patient chart, providers will have access to their patients’ genomic profiles, offering insight into drug genomic interactions, hereditary risks, and carrier status. Having an integrated patient genomic profile enables providers to proactively tailor care plans to the individual.

“We are excited to be joining Epic’s App Orchard marketplace, making it easier for health systems to find and integrate the ActX Genomic Service,” said Andrew Ury, M.D., ActX CEO. “ActX allows patients to benefit from genomics by getting the right medication the first time, and to receive pro-active care to avoid actionable risks, all built into the provider’s workflow.”

More than 20,000 providers are helping their patients receive better care through ActX. Our goal is to make genomics practical. By listing our app in the App Orchard marketplace, ActX has moved one step closer to making precision medicine based care available everywhere.

The ActX Genomic Service offers proven, tightly integrated, real-time genomic decision support for medication orders and actionable genomic risks, a built in patient Genomic Profile, and the ability to fully customize content.

Elk Grove Unified Partners with ‘Care Solace’ for Mental Healthcare Services

“By partnering with a mission-driven school district like Elk Grove Unified, we’re paving a new path forward to connect students to verified community-based resources in times of need,” said Chad Castruita, founder of Care Solace.

Care Solace, an organization determined to calm the chaos of mental healthcare coordination, has been selected by the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) to support behavioral and mental healthcare referrals for its nearly 63,000 students, families and staff members. Care Solace equips school districts with a web-based tool that makes it easier for students, families and staff to connect with mental healthcare resources and providers in their communities.

“School is more than a place to learn, it’s a place where students come to feel embraced, included and supported and with more than 400 referrals made in the first two weeks of our soft rollout, we see that there’s an unmet need,” said Don Ross, director of student support and health services at EGUSD. “We chose Care Solace for their unique ability to further our commitment to finding solutions that strengthen the health and safety of our learning community.”

According to Child Trends, quick and easy access to evidence-based intervention offers the best opportunity to reduce the burden of economic and health costs associated with mental health disorders. Care Solace’s care navigation system uses proprietary technology and the largest database of behavioral and mental healthcare resources in California to find carefully vetted local therapists and programs in minutes. Families of EGUSD will also have access to an around-the-clock Care Concierge team, where experts guide families through processes related to insurance, provider availability, wait times and scheduling.

“By partnering with a mission-driven school district like Elk Grove Unified, we’re paving a new path forward to connect students to verified community-based resources in times of need. There are many barriers that make it difficult for schools and families to get mental healthcare. We want to lift that burden so they can focus on what’s most important – getting well,” said Chad Castruita, founder of Care Solace. “We couldn’t be more proud to support Elk Grove Unified in strengthening the wellbeing of their community.”

Care Solace provides the network necessary to help faculty, students and families determine when support is needed, and assists in coordinating community-based mental healthcare options. In areas with limited access to behavioral and mental healthcare resources and providers, professional counseling is available through online therapy sessions. Last year alone, more than 80,000 school staff and parents used the pre-screening tool, and at least 30,000 students received mental healthcare services as a result. Care Solace has facilitated an estimated 4,000 crisis interventions.

Care Solace is now available to EGUSD families and staff. For more information about Care Solace, please visit https://home.caresolace.com/.
