Ketamine Therapy Essential Service During COVID-19 Pandemic

ASKP Weighs in on Ketamine Therapy against the backdrop of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Ketamine therapy will continue to be a vital service that needs to be available to patients during this pandemic. – Dr. Sandhya Prashad, Secretary of the American Society of Ketamine Physicians

It goes without saying that COVID-19 is on the minds of nearly every American. The societal and economic disruption is almost without precedent. As government officials and clinicians wrestle with issues of how to protect the public, there seem to be more questions than answers. The mental health effects of COVID-19 are as important to address as are the physical health effects. Social isolation, school closures, lack of structure, financial difficulties, and unemployment are among the many stressors related to COVID-19 that have significant impacts on mental well-being.

In a national survey conducted by Axios, 29% said their emotional well-being had gotten worse. Chris Walden, co-founder of Ketamine Media, reports that online searches for anxiety treatment, depression treatment and searches pertaining to suicide, have increased at a rapid pace. In addition, Noah Heller, co-founder of MoodMonitor, has noted that the number of patients reporting thoughts of wanting to inflict self-harm via a depression rating tool, the PHQ-9, has significantly increased. Research has shown that suicidal ideation reported on the PHQ-9 was a robust predictor of suicide attempts and deaths. In addition, there is significant literature establishing a strong link between unemployment and higher suicide rates. Many studies have demonstrated the robust and rapid antidepressant and anti-suicidal effects of ketamine, especially in a treatment resistant population. Awareness and access to this valuable treatment will be increasingly important as unprecedented stressors increase the rate of depression and suicide in the coming months.

The American Society of Ketamine Physicians has been at the forefront of advocating for patients who have benefited from this forward-leaning therapy. Ketamine therapy is an essential service that cannot be interrupted during this crisis. “Our patients who suffer from severe depression and suicidality do not suddenly get better just because there is a pandemic. In fact, they are likely to struggle more. Continuing to offer treatment to high risks populations significantly alleviates the additional strain that would otherwise be placed on emergency rooms and urgent care settings,” says Sandhya Prashad, MD, a psychiatrist from Houston and Secretary for ASKP.

Taking appropriate precautions while continuing to treat patients in an outpatient setting is imperative. Evaluating the necessity of treatment for patients beforehand can be beneficial. The use of telemedicine can assist in evaluating and providing ongoing care for patients in less emergent situations. Minimizing contact between patients in waiting rooms, screening patients beforehand for symptoms or contact with others who are ill and thorough cleaning between patients can help to mitigate the risk to patients and staff.

About ASKP

The American Society of Ketamine Physicians is a medical society that embraces the leadership roles of psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, emergency medicine physicians, psychotherapists, advance practice providers and others in the therapeutic use of ketamine. Mindful Urgent Care Offers Extended Online Mental Health and Medication Management Appointments in Response to COVID-19 Outbreak

Mindful Urgent Care, a leading mental health clinic that offers same-day psychiatric and mental health services, including medication management, in the Greater New York Area, has implemented swift proactive measures to support existing and new patients in response to the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the disease it causes, named “coronavirus disease 2019” (COVID-19). Effective as of Monday, March 16, 2020, Mindful Urgent Care has increased providers and clinicians, extended business hours, and introduced telehealth video conferencing appointments to help ensure the wellness and safety of residents in the New York Metro area.

Mindful Urgent Care Medical Director Dr. Ram Pardeshi says, “Our highest priority is protecting the health and safety of our employees, patients, and community. While adhering strictly to guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control, we are working diligently to provide extended services to New York City in this time of need. I am extremely proud of the unity our staff has displayed and the speed at which we have implemented new program availability and hours.”

That Mindful Urgent Care is offering extended services in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak is a credit to the mental health clinics’ commitment to patients. Already, there are increased reports of adjustment disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, a common fallout of a global crisis. Maintaining excellence in psychiatric and mental health services is a critical component of enduring short- and long-term changes in daily life, which is why Mindful immediately introduced extended hours and online appointments.

The Greater New York mental health clinic has a history of setting high standards. In 2019, Mindful Urgent Care treated over 2,600 patients and successfully prevented more than 1,000 suicides and psychiatric hospitalizations with cutting-edge mental health and medication management services. To further support the growing need of New Yorkers during the coronavirus outbreak, and beyond, they are opening a fourth location in Grand Central Station at the end of March 2020.

Existing and new patients are encouraged to schedule appointments online by visiting Mindful Urgent Care’s virtual health center. Services include treatment for a variety of anxiety and panic disorders, depression, bipolar disorder and anger management, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, and eating disorders. Note that Mindful Urgent Care is a mental health psychiatry and medication management provider – not a medical urgent care provider.

Let’s Talk Interactive and Soldier On Partner to Provide Veterans with Improved Access to Mental Health Care Services via Telehealth

Soldier On Case Manager Craig Deraway demonstrates the new Let’s Talk Interactive custom telehealth kiosk developed for their program.

“The ability to give veterans access to the mental health support they need right at their fingertips will help prevent them from repeating behaviors that lead to these unfortunate circumstances and get on the path to living a productive, independent life.” — Bruce Buckley, CEO of Soldier On.

Let’s Talk Interactive, Inc., (LTI) a leader in customizable Telehealth Networks and Solutions, and Soldier On, a nonprofit organization committed to ending veteran homelessness, today announce they have partnered to implement a new program that provides veterans with greater access to mental health services. Soldier On will leverage LTI’s secure, HIPAA-compliant online software platform and customized telehealth kiosks in its transitional housing, jail programs, and permanent housing in order to further assist our nation’s warfighters as they transition from homelessness to homeownership.

Soldier On’s programs impact an estimated 3,200 veterans annually across four states including Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. With the addition of Let’s Talk Interactive’s kiosks and telehealth software, Soldier On’s case managers will be able to see their clients more frequently to provide mental health services as their travel time is drastically reduced. Additionally, by hosting virtual sessions, case managers and their clients will not be impacted by precautions such as social distancing. As Soldier On grows its presence throughout New Jersey and New York, LTI’s technology will enable them to support all of their permanent housing residents with life skills, substance abuse, and other groups.

“It’s no secret that many veterans suffer from anxiety, depression, anger, and PTSD. These emotional hurdles can lead to drug use, loss of support from family members, vagrancy and in some cases, incarceration,” explains Bruce Buckley, CEO of Soldier On. “The ability to give veterans access to the mental health support they need right at their fingertips will assist them in dealing with these challenges and help prevent them from repeating behaviors that lead to these unfortunate circumstances and get on the path to living a productive, independent life.”

Prior to leveraging LTI’s telehealth technology via iPads and custom kiosks in transitional housing, Soldier On’s staff would travel long distances to their veteran patients each week, spending hours in the car traveling between rural facilities and over state lines. By providing the telehealth piece, instead of misused time behind the wheel, these mental health specialists can connect directly with multiple veterans who receive treatment “in place”–within the same day–and get them the help they need at a more accelerated rate.

“We are proud to partner with Soldier On to help expand the mental health services they are providing to veterans as they work to achieve and sustain homeownership,” said Arthur Cooksey, Founder and CEO of LTI. “Our customized telehealth technology is a key part of that process as we connect more veterans with providers in realtime and help them overcome challenges related to emotions and mental health before they are released.”

LTI has a proven track record of addressing addiction among inmates and assisting them in transitioning to a successful life upon release. In 2019, LTI brought virtual behavioral health assessments and medication-assisted treatment options to Florida’s Franklin County Jail inmates through a partnership with Franklin County Sheriff AJ Smith & Big Bend Community Based Care CEO Mike Watkins. After six months serving the inmates of the Franklin County Jail and five other counties, LTI’s platform has facilitated 52 sessions and 953 minutes of telehealth treatment in mental health and is expected to reduce substance abuse among inmates and decrease recidivism, which will ultimately save taxpayers money.

Groundbreaking Study in the Journal of Business and Psychology Shines Spotlight on IntegrityFirst Ability to Reduce Workers’ Compensation Costs & Workplace Injuries

In this study, we demonstrated that overt integrity testing predicted both workplace injuries and malingering of injuries. Further, we demonstrated that the effect on injuries was through safety motivation and safety compliance. – Stephen Gilliland

The research conducted by professors at the University of Arizona Eller College of Management, Claremont Graduate University, and California State University Channel Islands, found that overt integrity testing such as IntegrityFirst generates over 800% ROI by reducing workers compensation costs.

“In this study, we demonstrated that overt integrity testing predicted both workplace injuries and malingering of injuries. Further, we demonstrated that the effect on injuries was through safety motivation (willingness to exert effort to enact safety behaviors) and safety compliance (compliance with generally mandated safety behaviors),” said Stephen W. Gilliland, University Professor, Claremont Graduate University and co-author of the study.

The study, entitled “Reducing Injuries, Malingering, and Workers’ Compensation Costs by Implementing Overt Integrity Testing,” highlights the dramatic impact IntegrityFirst has on workers compensation, workplace injuries and malingering. The 3 clients studied in this paper specifically utilized IntegrityFirst, which focuses on 4 counterproductive behaviors of: Theft, Hostility/Bullying; Lying and Substance Abuse.

“We are excited with the results of the study as they further validate what our IntegrityFirst clients have experienced for over 40 years; safer and more productive candidates,” said Russ Johnson, President and CEO of Merchants Information Solutions which owns IntegrityFirst.

Highlights from the study include:

  • 734% & 866% return on investment (ROI) findings from reduced workers compensation claim rates and related costs in the two studies conducted.
  • Those who pass IntegrityFirst are more safety conscious than their peers including a motivation to work safely and comply with safety rules resulting in lower rates of injuries.
  • IntegrityFirst measures factors which relate directly to malingering, a key predictor of workers compensation claims.
  • Screening job applicants with IntegrityFirst can be a cost-effective way to reduce unnecessary workplace injuries, malingering and the related workers’ compensation claims.

The study can be accessed here: Reducing Injuries, Malingering, and Workers’ Compensation Costs by Implementing Overt Integrity Testing.

IntegrityFirst is a leading provider of overt employment integrity tests in the U.S., offering an unrivaled money back guarantee on workers’ compensation loss rates. Agency Announces Implementation Universal Precautionary Measures in Response to Coronavirus (COVID-19)

“Our top priority is the health & safety of clients & staff,” said Dr. Monteic A. Sizer, executive director of Northeast Delta. Effective immediately, all Northeast Delta clinics & facilities will primarily operate based on appointments only.Read more: http://ow.ly/sRvD50yMRt6

To avoid the potential spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) through the agency’s clinics and offices, Northeast Delta Human Services Authority is implementing several new universal health and safety measures agency-wide.

“Our top priority is the health and safety of our clients and staff,” said Dr. Monteic A. Sizer, executive director of Northeast Delta. “Extensive discussion has occurred around this emerging situation, and several preventative measures have been implemented in regards to protecting the vulnerable populations that our agency serves. We recognize the importance of implementing appropriate precautions and that such precautions will save countless lives.”

Northeast Delta HSA serves as the foremost safety net provider of intellectual and physical disability supports, prevention and wellness programs, and behavioral and primary healthcare services. For this reason, effective immediately, all Northeast Delta clinics and facilities will primarily operate based on appointments only.

By temporarily discontinuing walk-in appointments for non-established clients, as well as being proactive about scheduling existing clients in advance of their appointments, the agency can limit human to human contact and more easily practice social distancing to lessen the spread of COVID-19. However, and at the same time, the agency will rely on its telepsychiatry capacity, and case managers will perform well checks to verify that all clients are receiving the care they need during this time.

Prevention and wellness outreach efforts, assessments, and screenings in schools and communities will be significantly lessened to reduce the chance of community spread of COVID-19. Additionally, in-home services for clients with developmental disabilities will be prioritized based on those clients with the greatest need. Developmental Disabilities staff will be diligent in communicating with all clients to ensure that their needs continue to be met.

Precautions are now in place for those who schedule appointments to visit the agency’s clinics and administration offices. All staff, clients, and visitors will have their temperature checked upon entry. They will be asked a series of questions as well. If fever or other symptoms are present, and if they answer yes to certain questions, those individuals will not be permitted to enter the facility.

Furthermore, all agency facilities have implemented enhanced cleaning procedures, including the use of coronavirus-killing cleaning agents multiple times each day.

“We must be careful to mitigate the exposure to illness in all of our clinics and facilities so we can continue to provide services to those clients who cannot go 14 to 30 days without services,” said Sizer. “Executive management team members within our agency are working with our administrative, clinical, and support teams to actively review client information and prioritize the care for those most in need across our region.”

To minimize the service gap for those clients not identified as high need during this crisis, Northeast Delta provides a 24/7 helpline at 1-800-256-2522. Additionally, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Substance Abuse and Mental Health Helpline is available 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357. For those seeking information about COVID-19, the Governor’s Office is utilizing the state’s 211 network to answer calls about the virus.

“As we all grapple with the response phase of this COVID-19 pandemic, Northeast Delta is also making efforts to prepare for the inevitable recovery phase of this crisis,” said Sizer. “We will be prepared to help our communities establish a new normal and recover from COVID-19.”

Individuals seeking additional information about the coronavirus and recommended precautions are encouraged to visit the Louisiana Department of Health’s website at http://ldh.la.gov and the Louisiana Governor’s Office website at https://gov.louisiana.gov.
