Duran Duran and David Lynch Announce Omaze Campaigns to Support “Heal the Healers Now” to Provide Transcendental Meditation to US Medical Professionals Battling COVID-19

“Heal the Healers Now,” a national initiative from the David Lynch Foundation to bring the stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique to medical professionals who are battling the coronavirus pandemic, is receiving fundraising support from Duran Duran and filmmaker David Lynch, chair of the David Lynch Foundation. In two separate campaigns launching today through the leading online fundraising platform Omaze, Duran Duran and Lynch are offering fans who donate to “Heal the Healers Now” a chance to win VIP experiences.

Fans can visit omaze.com/duranduran for a chance to score VIP tickets to a future Duran Duran concert (plus flights and hotel accommodations for the trip) as well as a virtual photography session with keyboardist Nick Rhodes. Every donation made through Omaze gives you a chance to win.

Fans can visit omaze.com/coffee to win a coffee date over video chat with legendary filmmaker David Lynch, who will also draw a picture of the winner during the chat.

“Duran Duran have been fortunate enough to make music and share it with our fans around the world, over four decades. Right now, when many people are affected by COVID-19 in some way, we all need to find new ways to adapt to life and to help those around us. Healthcare workers who are battling to hold our world together through these traumatic times have been some of the most impacted by the virus,” said Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran. “David Lynch’s absolute commitment as an artist has also been reflected in his equal engagement with meditation. Through his foundation he has previously helped many people and I think it is meaningful at this moment that The David Lynch Foundation are offering the opportunity for all medical workers to learn TM for free. We are thrilled to be involved in this initiative through the Omaze campaign. Please join us in supporting Heal the Healers Now.”

Transcendental Meditation is an easy-to-learn, enjoyable-to-practice mental technique for deep relaxation and stress reduction that has been successfully offered in medical schools, academic and VA medical centers, hospitals, military academies, substance abuse centers, prisons and other settings, according to the TM.org website.

Instruction in the TM technique for healthcare providers includes eight hours of specialized training by a trauma-informed teacher, which includes one class of personalized instruction, as well as a comprehensive, one-year follow-up program to ensure the provider is gaining maximum results. The technique is practiced for 15-20 minutes twice a day. Training for healthcare professionals battling COVID-19 will begin once health authorities give the greenlight for teaching medical workers onsite.

“TM has been shown to reduce stress and trauma, and these healthcare workers need this now more than ever, both during and after this pandemic has passed. Please help us bring this meditation to the heroes on the front lines,” said filmmaker David Lynch, chair of the David Lynch Foundation.

Celebrities including Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry, Tom Hanks, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sting, Russell Brand, Laura Dern, Lena Dunham, Naomi Watts, Mary-Louise Parker, Amy Schumer and Bill Hader practice Transcendental Meditation and support the work of the David Lynch Foundation to bring the meditation for free to at-risk adults and youth.

Over 400 peer-reviewed published studies on TM have documented improvements in a wide variety of stress-related disorders, as well as significant improvements in cognitive function and overall health and well-being. The National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense have awarded nearly $30 million in grant support for research on TM.

For iaedp™ Virtual Symposium, Participants Can Watch and Experience All Sessions

“We couldn’t be more excited to offer our previously planned face-to-face Symposium in a virtual format,” said Bonnie Harken, Managing Director at the iaedp™ Foundation.

For 33 consecutive years, the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™) has delivered its annual conference, the iaedp™ Symposium, to provide the field of eating disorders treatment professionals with an innovative and diverse offering of the latest research, education and training, and networking opportunities. 2020 will prove no different with the iaedp™ Virtual Symposium, but with an added benefit. Since it is a virtual offering, participants who attend online can view and experience every presentation.

From May 15 – July 31, 2020, those who have registered for the iaedp™ Virtual Symposium have the opportunity to earn the maximum 28 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and see and experience all of the Symposium presentations.

“We couldn’t be more excited to offer our previously planned face-to-face Symposium in a virtual format,” said Bonnie Harken, Managing Director at the iaedp™ Foundation.

“One of greatest benefits of the virtual format is that the schedule of previous in-person Symposiums don’t apply. That gives all those who register and attend online the opportunity to see and experience every session,” continued Harken.

“Of course, the Exhibit Hall also will be available virtually,” said Harken. “So participants have many opportunities through online attendance. It is possible to move at your own pace, and there’s no need to stop viewing when CEUs are complete.”

The 2020 Virtual Symposium presented by iaedp™ provides healthcare professionals the same CEUs opportunity that the original in-person Symposium offered, but safely and conveniently online.

About the iaedp™ Foundation: Since 1985, the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals has provided education and training standards to an international and multidisciplinary group of various healthcare treatment providers and helping professions. MemberSHARE.iaedp.com is an iaedp™ business journal and online member resource to learn about noteworthy member achievements, continuing education webinars and U.S. and international chapter activity and events; for more information, visit MemberSHARE.

Let them eat cake! A Harvard health expert weighs in

Who could forget a cake with featuring your high school senior's photo!

You did it, Tyler! Stay Golden!

“Most importantly, don’t let this milestone slip by unrecognized; it’s especially crucial for those students who struggled in high school,” said Ellen O’Donnell, PhD.,a pediatric psychologist at Mass General Hospital for Children, an instructor at Harvard Medical School.

High school graduation is usually a celebratory rite of passage. But for most of the 3.7 million students in the Class of 2020, the typical end-of-year traditions have been wiped away by Covid-19, including commencement ceremonies and festive parties meant to timestamp this milestone. To temper the disappointment, how might parents bring some joy back to students feeling the loss? Could it be as simple as celebrating with a cake? It’s a start.

“Your senior year, and especially spring semester, is a combination of celebration and mourning. We see cliques breaking down and classmates bonding as they reminisce and start preparing themselves to launch into adulthood,” said Ellen H. O’Donnell, Ph.D., a pediatric psychologist at Mass General Hospital for Children, an instructor at Harvard Medical School, and author of the parenting book, Bless This Mess. “And now instead, the anticipated ‘senior slack’ is spent sheltering at home. We’re asking teens to behave as if they are depressed. I’m hearing from teens who are questioning whether they want to go to college in the fall. There’s a lack of structure. Kids are retreating to their bedrooms. And they can get stuck, lose their momentum, and for some, lapse into an unhealthy limbo. Most importantly, don’t let this milestone slip by unrecognized; it’s especially crucial for those students who struggled in high school.”

O’Donnell shares ways that parents can help their graduates:

  • Find a way to replicate the emotional part of commencement. Receiving your diploma on stage and the firm handshake from the dean or principal is a significant moment of recognition – you did it! Parents—let your students hear “congratulations” from you and others who serve as role models.
  • Graduation ceremonies and spring banquets allow parents to see their kids shine and give their students closure. Senior skip day, corny speeches, a formal outfit, walking the stage, shout outs from friends, and posing for millions of photos for parents. All are absent this year. Parents can recreate the emotions with a mix of new and old rituals. Go ahead and wake them up early on graduation day and make noise, load up your front lawn with signs, and shout out your windows. Order a cake, tie up balloons and dress up for a party, whether small or virtual. Create an emotional experience they will remember.
  • Tie in human connection while social distancing. I fully support the physical restrictions in place, but we need to balance our teens’ physical health with their mental and spiritual health. The car parades students have been doing for one another, decorating cars, honking horns, and celebrating at a distance hold a lot of meaning. It brings a palpable energy that virtual interaction can’t capture. I think there should be a car parade for everyone! A table at the end of the driveway with a box to collect cards and a tray of cupcakes to go gives everyone a feeling of celebration.

“We also have to acknowledge that this is really hard, really sad, and it really sucks. We should not dismiss that,” said O’Donnell. “But any celebration can be significant.”

“We want to congratulate the graduating class of 2020,” said John Gardner, DecoPac Vice President of Sales. “We know that you will emerge stronger and with an appreciation for our global connectedness as you go forth into the world, young adults with wisdom beyond your years. And don’t forget the wise words of Julia Child – ‘a party without a cake is just a meeting.’”

National Military Family Association, Humana Military Support Frontline Families During COVID-19 Crisis

“Many of our Frontline Families can’t even be on the front line when America needs them most.”

The National Military Family Association (NMFA) and Humana Military are joining to respond to the needs of America’s Frontline Families this #GivingTuesdayNow. Together, they will provide critical support for military spouses in medical and mental health professions whose families serve the nation.

These are our Frontline Families: battling COVID-19 at home and protecting America abroad.

Frontline Families face unique challenges—long periods of separation due to military deployments and training, moving every two to three years, and a continual cycle of leaving their newly-developed support systems behind.

Like many American families, most military families rely on two incomes, but for working military spouses the job search starts anew every few years. For the 34% who work in fields requiring licensure and certification like nursing and mental health, the hiring process is long and cost prohibitive. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, this means that some military spouses who work in the health field are sidelined.

“Many of our Frontline Families can’t even be on the front line when America needs them most,” said Ashish Vazirani, Executive Director and CEO of the National Military Family Association. “Licenses can cost up to $5,000, and many spouses are forced to apply for new credentials every time they move with the military. Our country and their communities lose out.”

Humana Military, a longtime supporter of health and well-being among military families, knows how valuable these Frontline Families are for America.

“As a TRICARE health partner for more than twenty years, Humana Military knows that America’s Frontline Families power not only our military but also our healthcare systems and communities at home. It’s vital to ensure that military spouses have the resources and training they need to thrive,” said Brent Densford, President of Humana Military. “That’s why we’re proud to match every #GivingTuesdayNow donation to the National Military Family Association dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000.”

#GivingTuesdayNow is a global day of giving and unity, set to take place on May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. The day is designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropic activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.

The National Military Family Association and Humana Military are pleased to come together this #GivingTuesdayNow for a giving campaign to support America’s Frontline Families. To learn more or donate, visit https://www.militaryfamily.org/giving-tuesday-now.

During the virus pandemic, Bio Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® will be providing regular updates at http://www.sharonkleynehour.com/Coronavirus.php

International fitness instructor Kevin Kearns of Boston, Massachusetts and his student, 13-year-old Brandon Foster in Ireland talk with VoiceAmerica radio host Sharon Kleyne about immunity protection, new hygiene practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and after, and the physical and mental training that drives exercise and the martial arts.

“Only water made time into eternity,” says Bio Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® founder Sharon Kleyne. “We must drink a lot of clean water so that the body flushes out harmful toxins. Each of our organs has a percentage of water. The surface of the eye is 99 percent water. We are all learning immunity protection,” Kleyne continues. “pH balance means acid mantel protection in the body. Drink a lot of water,” Kleyne encourages. “Breathe in, breathe out and get those toxins out of there! Then follow up with a healthy diet that’s right for you. Diet is the next medicine.”

Kearns in Boston says that during the COVID-19 pandemic he has been concerned about five things.

  • 1. Obesity
  • 2. Lack of movement
  • 3. Depression
  • 4. Potential suicide
  • 5. Alcohol & drug abuse

Kearns, whose system is designed to “make people feel good about exercise,” describes how he was a weak, bullied kid who discovered his purpose and self-confidence in the martial arts. Kearns believes that his young student, Foster, is a good role model for young people everywhere.

Foster brings passion and optimism to his daily life and learning. “Every single day there is always something new to do and learn.” Growing up, Foster describes how “he was taught to eat well and stay away from unhealthy foods. “My father taught me how to breathe properly,” he shares. “Yoga is a great help.”

Kleyne asks Foster what advice he might give to kids his age. “Exercise,” says Foster without hesitation. “Find something to do that makes you happy,” he adds, “and have fun when exercising with the physical and mental training.” Foster, who shares that at the age of four he wanted to be a superhero, then a scientist, studies algorithm and artificial intelligence and is never bored. Now he loves writing, telling stories and wants to be a fulltime writer.

Kleyne, Kearns and Foster all say that we need patience and passion to learn all we need to learn about immunity protection and the importance of water to new hygiene practices.

nView Health Delivers Advanced Behavioral Health Screening Functionality

nView digital assessment solutions allow doctors to screen and interview patients remotely.

nView Health, a provider of innovative software solutions that help identify, diagnose, and monitor patients with behavioral health conditions, announced today the general availability of its latest release, which includes capabilities that allow healthcare providers to automatically track and monitor patient progress over time and gives healthcare providers greater flexibility.

This new version, v1.9.1, closely follows another major release that the company issued in February, which included the addition of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) interview and the Children Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS). These give the clinicians the ability to add notes and information within each interview for greater clarity and enhanced security to meet HITRUST password standards.

“The demand for access to mental health professionals has never been greater than today. And at nView, we’re deploying new solutions that help healthcare providers remotely diagnose and monitor patients more accurately and efficiently so they can help more patients,” said Jim Szyperski, CEO of nView Health. “nView digital assessment solutions allows doctors to screen and interview their patients remotely in advance of their consultation. And since our solutions screen for virtually all major psychiatric disorders in one solution, doctors have a more complete and accurate picture of patients right from the start.”

New Features Added

  • nView Monitors: Ideal for health systems and behavioral health practices that are operating within value-based care networks. The new nView Monitors help capture patient-reported data at physician-defined intervals automatically so they can proactively monitor and report on outcomes. The Monitors include, but are not limited to, Major Depressive Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Substance Abuse Disorder, PTSD, OCD, ADHD (Adult), and several eating disorders.
  • Customizable Landing Pages: Healthcare providers can easily customize web pages within the survey tools that clinicians and patients see before and after completing online assessments. This allows providers to include their own branding and messaging to inform and guide patients throughout the process.
  • Administrator Flexibility: The pediatric version of the online structured diagnostic interview, the MINI-KID, can now be edited within 24 hours of completion, as young patients sometimes rethink their answers, allowing physicians to make the changes. In addition, a new Report History capability documents all versions of the interview, so any changes are auditable.
  • Among several other features, the company is also deploying new online video-based user training guides to support administrators and users of the system.

A Proven Track Record

nView Health has spent years building and deploying digital mental health assessment solutions, including its flagship product, the digital Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.), that is based on the world’s most widely validated assessment, and cited in more than 17,000 clinical studies and trials. With responsive algorithms that drive the presentation of only the most relevant questions based on patient’s answers, the digital M.I.N.I. takes an average of less than 20 minutes to complete, compared to the 45-60 minutes required by many other structured psychiatric interviews. This short, structured diagnostic interview evaluates common DSM-5 and ICD-10 psychiatric disorders.

About nView

nView offers behavioral health technology that enables healthcare professionals, researchers, and educators to rapidly deliver the right diagnosis, resulting in the right treatment at the right time. Its signature product, the digital M.I.N.I., allows providers to deliver validated diagnostic behavioral health screens, interviews, outcome tracking, and billable services to patients in a simple, easy-to-use platform. THRIVING IN QUARANTINE — Really? It’s Happening

It’s absolutely fascinating the way the unique wiring of the ADHD brain causes it to be drawn to new experiences, as well as creative ideas and approaches neurotypical individuals often cannot see,” said board certified psychiatrist, William Dodson, MD, a member of ADDitude’s medical review board.

THRIVING IN QUARANTINE — Really? It’s Happening

As America begins yet another difficult week of lockdown, many are struggling on a daily basis to find inspiration and motivation. But there is one group that is coping surprisingly well, even thriving, in quarantine.

“When we think attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, many of us think of characteristics like distractibility, and disorganization,” says Susan Caughman, publisher and editor-in-chief of ADDitude magazine, and its partner website additudemag.com, “but the reality is that, during a time of crisis, many people with ADHD exhibit the exact opposite qualities. Their brains kick into a higher gear, they become hyper-focused, and decisive, and are able to offer clarity, at a time when other others appear flustered and confused.”

A recent survey of more than 2,000 ADDitude readers confirmed that 40% of adults with a diagnosis felt their ADHD gave them an emotional advantage during this unprecedented national public health crisis.

Survey Excerpts:

“I love that we have to come up with new ways to do things… because change doesn’t bother me, I adapt. Honestly, it seems that the world is now more suited to me and I don’t have to work so hard to fit in, or cope.”

Another reader says her ability to hyper-focus is helping her absorb and retain information about the virus, the immune system, and epidemiology overall… “Some folks might find that daunting, but for me, connecting all these dots gives me greater understanding about our situation, and that keeps me more grounded and calmer.”

And another reported, “The world is moving slow right now, and for once, I am allowed to just be me…. My distractibility used to take up so much time, but now we’re in limbo and time doesn’t exist. I get to relax while I am in a hyper-focused creative state… it feels glorious some days – I feel free.”

“It’s absolutely fascinating the way the unique wiring of the ADHD brain causes it to be drawn to new experiences, as well as creative ideas and approaches that neurotypical individuals often cannot see,” commented board certified psychiatrist, William Dodson, M.D., a member of ADDitude’s medical review board. “That’s why we believe many people despite the challenging circumstances brought on by social distancing and quarantine, are doing so well in these unprecedented times.”

Paws of War Replaces Tattered Flag, Provides Free Services for Disabled Veteran Amid Pandemic

We fight to save lives on both ends of the leash, and we are honored to be able to help Hank and other veterans just like him, explains John Walis, veteran relations director of Paws of War.

When disabled veteran Hank Urnaitis answered the door, he wasn’t expecting Paws of War to be there, ready to help him through the pandemic. But that’s just what they did. The organization, which helps veterans and animals, stopped by to provide Hank with face masks and pet food. They also teamed up with Cambridge Catering to take him some prepared meals. When they looked around, they realized that he had some safety issues on his property that needed to be addressed, so they also got busy fixing those items, too.

“Hank is a decorated veteran who we paired up a service dog with back in 2016,” explains John Walis, veteran relations director of Paws of War. “We know he’s humble and didn’t want to take the assistance, but we wanted to give back to our veterans in need who won’t ask for help. It’s paramount that we are there for them and their service dogs now and in the future.”

After delivering the essential items, the Paws of War team took to helping with some safety issues that needed to be done. They fixed unsafe boards in the steps leading up to his home, replaced tattered flags in his yard, and fixed an area of his fencing a tree had fallen on.

The area of the fence that was down made it impossible for Hank to allow his dog to run around the yard, adding to his stress of trying to take him out for walks each day. By repairing the fence, Hank will be able to once again allow his dog to run free in the yard. All the supplies for the repairs were provided by Paws of War, and they provided the services free of charge.

Seeing the tattered flags be replaced with new ones was the biggest perk for the veteran. Being a proud veteran, the flags were a big deal for him. The organization is on a mission to help even more veterans through the pandemic, but they need the public to team up with them to help make it happen.

“We fight to save lives on both ends of the leash, and we are honored to be able to help Hank and other veterans just like him,” added Walis. “We use the donations that people give to us to help vets and pets. During this time there are many veterans who could use some additional supplies or assistance, and we will continue to what we can to help them. Donations are down, yet we have more veterans to help, so we really need the support of the community at this time.”

The Paws of War team was able to capture some video footage of their efforts and have created a video that can be seen here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L_RYqy_TBj0.

Paws of War rescues dogs, provides them with proper training, and then pairs them with veterans who need therapy animals, all free of charge. They also help soldiers bring their dog back to America after serving in the Middle East. Those who would like to learn more about supporting Paws of War and its mission can go online to: http://pawsofwar.org. To make a donation visit: https://pawsofwar.org/donate-today.

Westwind Integrated Health Offers Medical and Dental Care in Phoenix, AZ

I was literally scared to death to go to the dentist. Now, I feel like I can smile and talk and not have to cover my mouth and be embarrassed about it.

The experienced dental-medical team at Westwind Integrated Health (WIH) spreads awareness of PTSD and the damaging effects it has on an individual’s mental, physical, and oral health if not properly treated. Patients suffering from PTSD in Phoenix, AZ and Glendale AZ can reduce dental anxiety, or any anxiety related to medical procedures, and experience calming appointments at WIH with IV sedation. WIH encourages patients with PTSD to seek personalized dental-medical care from a compassionate and caring team to improve their whole-body health.

PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a disorder that develops early on or even years after an individual experiences a shocking, scary, dangerous, or other emotionally traumatic events. Anyone can develop PTSD and around 8 percent of individuals will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Those living with this disorder are generally more likely to experience depression, orofacial problems like teeth grinding and clenching, stress, and chronic pain, and may neglect their physical and oral health. At WIH, the team of integrated dental and medical professionals considers PTSD and the effects it has on whole-body health. Patients with PTSD can find calming and compassionate dental-medical care, including IV sedation to ease dental anxiety, at any of the nine practice locations across Glendale and Phoenix, AZ.

IV sedation is the highest level of conscious sedation and is administered intravenously. Patients are in a very relaxed state during the procedure and often have no memory of their appointment. High fear, high anxiety patients benefit the most from IV sedation, which works to relax their bodies and calm their nervous systems. As a result, the team at WIH can complete more treatments in one visit and in a much more efficient manner. For patients suffering from PTSD, which may cause dental anxiety or trigger a stressful or traumatic memory during their appointments, IV sedation can be an ideal option and help them experience calming and productive dental and medical visits.

“I was literally scared to death to go to the dentist. Now, I feel like I can smile and talk and not have to cover my mouth and be embarrassed about it,” says Penny, a patient at WIH. “The philosophy and mission at Westwind is to satisfy their patients, making them comfortable, explaining in depth what will be done to make sure they have a full understanding, and then walking them through it from beginning to end.”

WIH encourages patients with dental anxiety and those with PTSD to experience the benefits of seeing an integrated team of dental and medical professionals. Taking a compassionate and personalized approach, the WIH team can help patients improve their mental, physical, and oral health with specialized and comfortable treatment.
