The Michigan Cares program will help students, parents, and educators across the state access the resources they need during this time. I’m proud to work with organizations who are stepping up to help Michiganders while we continue fighting Covid-19

Experts are predicting a mental health pandemic coming next, as students, parents and school staff are starting to feel the impact of distance learning and social isolation. That’s why Governor Whitmer, Michigan Virtual and Evolution Labs created Michigan Cares for all Michigan residents. The foundation for this amazing resource is Suite360, a robust, web and mobile program that delivers mental health and social emotional learning topics to students, parents and school staff. Check out the program here.

The program focuses on a wide range of topics, from Covid-19 specific lessons to digital citizenship and anxiety/stress management.

“We have faced an unprecedented crisis over the past month and, in these uncertain times, having access to mental health resources is crucial,” said Governor Whitmer. “The Michigan Cares program will help students, parents, and educators across the state access the resources they need during this time. I’m proud to work with organizations who are stepping up to help Michiganders while we continue fighting Covid-19.”

Michigan Cares was developed in partnership between Evolution Labs and Michigan Virtual (the premier distance-learning provider in Michigan).

In the program, students are learning to cope with challenges they have never faced before, including feelings of isolation, despair and social-distancing. Topics in the program are scaffolded by grade (K-12), and also include grade-specific content for parents, equipping them to better understand and manage the unique challenges their children are facing through and after the crisis. Topics for school staff provide tips and guidance on how to deliver social emotional learning and mental health content to students, hoping to mitigate the mental health and behavioral issues of students upon reentry in the fall.

Tracy Howe, Co-founder of Evolution Labs said “We are incredibly excited to be a part of Governor Whitmer’s Mental Health and SEL initiative. Suite360 is going to play a vital role in Michigan’s path to success by providing resources to all of those affected.”

Introducing Papinee Club, a global community-based initiative, supporting children’s emotional wellbeing during the Covid-19 pandemic through education & entertainment

A new children's series created to support them emotionally during Covid-19 pandemic

Papinee Club Title Card

This is a show for families by families, and beyond providing a set of fun, educational and interactive activities, it shows kids and parents alike that they are not alone and that we are stronger together. Our main goal is to inspire them to learn, laugh, and love.

PAPINEE, the progressive children’s storytelling company, is excited to launch Papinee Club, a groundbreaking community initiative which seeks to provide parents with a comprehensive toolkit and engaging content to help their young children cope with the extraordinary psychological and emotional stresses created by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Amidst the massive change in our daily lives and the high degree of uncertainty regarding the future, many parents are struggling to find meaningful and positive ways to help their children through this unprecedented crisis. “This is a very stressful time for families; isolated at home, parents need to juggle working remotely, helping their kids with distance learning, not to mention keeping everyone healthy and positive. Kids are unable to go to school, see their friends, play outside, waiting for things to go back to normal,” Dev Suj, the founder of PAPINEE, on the genesis of the project, “It took me back to my childhood when my mother was sick and we couldn’t leave the house, much less travel. But through her incredible imagination, she told us many fantastic stories of animals that ruled the planet; we visited exotic countries around the world, and it gave me hope.”

In response to this unprecedented crisis, Papinee Club was created to engage, educate and inspire children – from three to 8 years old – in these trying times. At the core of this ambitious public service initiative is a new original weekly video series which premieres today on YouTube. Each episode runs 15-20 minutes and showcases a carefully planned range of activities from yoga and mindfulness to art, music and dance expression; nutrition, craft and stories that parents and children can do together; it is also accompanied by the Papinee Passport – a downloadable collection of activities to provide an educational, interactive and communal way to keep children engaged throughout the week.

Addressing diverse themes such as gratitude, courage, resilience and acceptance, each episode takes families on a journey around the world, ignites their imagination through creative storytelling and encourages family bonding through joint activities. Ultimately, Papinee Club’s simple yet powerful message of universal love and respect seeks to reassure children of brighter days ahead, encourages dialogue and sharing, and provides helpful tips and suggestions for children to cope with the stresses brought forth by the pandemic.

“Children have gone through a lot recently; it is important to talk to them, and provide an open and nurturing forum to express, understand and manage the different feelings they might be having,” explains child psychologist, Dr. Monica Ghaliani, who also served as an advisor to the show. “It’s also important to help them find joy, feel connected, and also to have fun. Laughter and optimism are powerful and will go a long way in making them feel safe and less afraid.”

Each episode’s segments are animated by real families and volunteers from different parts of the world who find themselves in very similar circumstances. Sharing their unique talents and experiences, they provide an authentic and differentiated window into different cultures and reinforce the concept of a global community coming together in support of each other. With restrictions on travel likely to continue, Papinee Club brings the world to its young viewers to plant the seeds of curiosity, cultivate the joy of exploration, and inspire a sense of wonder and discovery.

“With the world essentially shut down, we had to be extremely innovative, creative and resourceful in how we created this show,” explains Suj. Conceived and created in less than 14 days due to the urgency of the crisis, the entire production – from developing the original script, creating bespoke toolkits and step-by-step instructions for participating families, to editing and animation – was managed remotely and volunteer-led. “We had to find the entire creative and production team, enlist all our friends to help, and it is mind boggling how everyone and everything just came together; we were all unified in our desire to get kids to understand that everything is OK, and that we are going to make the world better, together.”

The pilot features 5 families and characters from all walks of life and different corners of the globe – Telluride and Los Angeles in the US, Portugal, Turkey and Thailand – each united in their desire to share their story and talents to comfort and help others. “This is a show for families by families, and beyond providing a set of fun, educational and interactive activities, it shows kids and parents alike that they are not alone and that we are stronger together. Our main goal is to inspire them to learn, laugh, and love unconditionally because that is what Papinee is about – unconditional love.”

The inspiration behind PAPINEE originated many years ago from a mother’s unconditional love for her child – sparking joy, curiosity and confidence through imagination, fun and play. The company was founded as a social enterprise to educate and inspire children to become respectful, responsible and compassionate global citizens of tomorrow. Its proprietary WHIGZ curriculum (World, History, Imagination, Geography, Zoology) draws inspiration from Montessori, STEAM as well as the centuries-old craft of storytelling; its mission is to awaken a sense of curiosity, encourage respect for the planet and promote the values of universal love and human connection through the eyes of its animal characters from across the world: ‘RESPECT, CONNECT, PROTECT.’ Best known for their exceptionally crafted heirloom-inspired toys, interactive storytelling kits with a strong emphasis on education and pop-up amusement parks throughout Asia and Europe, Papinee Club brings its signature animal characters to life, animated on screen and online for the very first time; it also represents the brand’s first introduction to the US.

“This project has grown organically and has been sustained by the passion and tireless dedication of our network of volunteers; we are working at light speed to complete it as the need is so urgent and the current situation so extraordinary and universal,” says Suj. “We are incredibly humbled by the reception of the concept and the generosity of volunteers from around the world who helped to create the pilot. This is what motivates us to work even harder and faster, and hopefully when this crisis is over, the lessons we have taught will continue to inspire.”

Six additional episodes are currently in development with new episodes released every Saturday on its Youtube channel (http://bit.ly/PapineeClub) . Full episodes, individual segments and the Papinee Passport are also available on Papinee.com.

About Papinee

Papinee began many years ago with a mother whose ill health restricted her ability to travel and against all odds wanted to give her son the world. She converted their living room into the Pyramids of Giza, the Savannas of Kenya, the Taj Mahal and would take him to incredible lands with the most fantastical Animals through imaginative storytelling and play. And every Sunday they would visit local children’s orphanages where she would share stories with the kids, educating & inspiring them with ideas… She told each child that they were exceptional and brilliant and that they should reach for the stars; she whispered in each and every-one’s ear her magical word that represented ‘unconditional love,’ ‘you are my PAPINEE.’

Today PAPINEE is a Storytelling Company educating, inspiring and empowering families to respect everything, connect with everyone and protect the planet collectively. Educating them about the world, history; using imagination to teach geography, zoology (W.H.I.G.Z) and more through their unique Learn, Laugh, Papinee (unconditional love), storytelling system.

PAPINEE started with Storytelling Kits and these empowered every adult – be it parent, teacher or volunteer storyteller, to take children on magical learning journeys with the animal characters and stories from different countries. And also a Social Enterprise: for every PAPINEE Storytelling Kit sold, PAPINEE gives a Storytelling Inspire Kit to a child in need; working with volunteer storytellers worldwide to reach out to orphanages and children’s homes so that ALL kids can ‘Learn, Laugh and feel Papinee (unconditional love)’ and be empowered to soar the skies.

All PAPINEE products, experience projects, pop-up amusement parks, strategic partnerships encourage ‘togetherness’ letting adults and children turn their moments together into memories forever. Past projects range from taking over Harrods London with 24 windows on Brompton Road to converting China’s most important mall Xintiandi into a Pop Up World Expo to collaborations with partners such as Louis Vuitton, Make a Wish Foundation, Four Seasons, Financial Times, the government of Dubai, Changing Young Lives Foundation, HSBC, MTRC, Gucci, Society for Protection of Children and more.

United Way Of The National Capital Area Expands The Reach Of Its Support Of The Community During Pandemic In The Areas Of Health And Financial Stability

United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) continues to meet the demands of the community in the areas of access to food and basic needs and is now expanding support through its Emergency Assistance Fund to organizations in the areas of health and financial stability. Specifically, the fund has delivered more than $700,000 in additional capacity to 30 organizations and programs to date that are geared toward providing healthy meals to frontline hospital personnel, health and medical resources and financial coaching and guidance.

“Your United Way has its boots on the ground in the areas where our community needs the most support to weather through this pandemic and the financial, emotional and physical impact it’s taking on our neighbors,” said Rosie Allen-Herring, President and CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area. “Because of our organization’s incredible partners, we’ve been able to further extend resources to ensure that our neighbors continue to have access to food and basic needs, healthcare and are able to lean on experts that can help them with financial planning during this crisis. We’re incredibly grateful for their investments in our community.”

Pepco was the initial lead contributor to the United Way NCA Emergency Assistance Fund and along with the Exelon Foundation, has made another investment in the fund. New companies that have contributed to the Emergency Assistance Fund since it launched include Deloitte, Washington Gas, Coca-Cola Consolidated, EY, Philip L. Graham Fund and Meyer Foundation.

“We were proud to be the first to support this much needed Emergency Assistance Fund and having seen the response and the tremendous need in the community, we were compelled to step up again in an even bigger way,” said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings. “To know that Pepco’s grant with United Way’s guidance and valued stewardship is helping us support our customers during this time makes us humbled and proud to be part of the solution. We will continue to stand by United Way and this community in these unprecedented times.”

Money raised is still being used to support community-based organizations in the region providing much-needed services, including food and basic needs distribution, while also expanding to those providing health and mental health programs, social services and more.

“We are eternally grateful to United Way and to the companies that have come together to provide this life-saving emergency funding,” said Maria Gomez, President and CEO of Mary’s Center. “Mary’s Center has not qualified for the PPP federal stimulus funding during the pandemic, and yet, our participants’ healthcare and behavioral health needs have dramatically increased as they are facing one of the most challenging times in their lives; this funding will help us retain our essential frontline staff who are helping combat this beast! ”

Additional organizations now being supported by the EAF include:

  • Action in Community Through Service of Prince William

  • Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital

The EAF is also helping organizations focused on the needs of the region’s workforce as there are a significant number of workers facing loss of unrecoverable wages due to lay offs and businesses closing.

“Goodwill of Greater Washington is honored to have the generous support of the United Way NCA as we continue to walk beside our 600 furloughed associates,” said Catherine Meloy, President & CEO, Goodwill of Greater Washington. “This gift will allow us to support our team members as they prepare to transition back to employment in our retail stores. Reopening our stores will allow Goodwill to once again generate critical funding for our job training, education and employment programs so critically needed right now by our community.”

“The restaurant industry across this region, and nationwide, is in need of relief and recovery and we are grateful for partners in our region, like United Way who are including restaurant operators in small business relief measures,” said Kathy E. Hollinger, President and CEO, Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington. “This operational assistance will directly support small business in Prince George’s County as the funding will provide them with ServSafe training as they bring employees and managers back on board, and to support marketing efforts as we begin various phases of small business recovery in Prince George’s County and across the DC Metropolitan Area.”

Additionally, United Way NCA’s Financial Empowerment Centers (FEC) in DC, Prince George’s County, MD, South County and Prince William’s County, VA have gone virtual providing financial counseling and coaching to help residents stretch their dollars during furloughs, layoffs or reductions in income. Specifically, the FECs provide free financial coaching, small business counseling and tax preparation by IRS qualified volunteers. Those in need can receive help while practicing social distancing by telephone, video conferencing or by mail. Virtual libraries, webinars and workshops are also available to further help the community’s financial stability.

“Our Financial Empowerment Centers have been inundated with calls and communication from our community members who need help navigating how to apply for unemployment, SBA loans, and other public services being provided to help bridge the gap in loss of wages,” said Dirk Butler, Vice President of Community Impact and Engagement, the United Way of the National Capital Area. “We’re adapting to the demands and making sure each person who comes to us gets the financial planning help they need to make wise decisions and keep afloat during this time.”

Lief Therapeutics Announces Downtime™ Digital Anxiety Treatment Now Available Under FDA’s COVID-19 Emergency Guidance

News Image

Lief’s Downtime™ digital anxiety intervention helps increase heart rate variability to reduce anxiety

When you don’t have another appointment with your therapist or doctor until next week, or you need help calming yourself down in the moment when you’re feeling overwhelmed, Lief is there to help you.

Lief Therapeutics today announced its Downtime™ digital anxiety intervention is available as an adjunct treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder during the COVID-19 emergency. The patented digital intervention is delivered through the company’s flagship Lief Rx Smart Patch, a wearable ECG device now covered under most insurance plans. For the duration of the COVID-19 emergency, physicians can prescribe Downtime™ to help patients manage symptoms of anxiety in conjunction with their primary treatment plan.

Lief’s digital prescriptions are designed to improve heart rate variability (HRV), the gold standard biomarker for mental health. A meta-analysis of 2,086 anxiety patients found that low HRV is associated with anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, PTSD, and panic. Lief’s core offering, HRV biofeedback training, has been shown to significantly decrease stress and anxiety.

In clinical trials, 88% of Lief study participants reported significantly reduced anxiety over the course of eight weeks, as measured by standardized psychometric assessment. Participants were also able to significantly increase their HRV by approximately 50% in 3 minute exercises with the device.

Dr. Ty Canning, a clinical psychologist in the Bay Area shares, “Lief is a cutting edge resource to battle anxiety in the moment. Without it, patients are left relying on medications that, while initially helpful, become ineffective over time. With Lief there is no risk for dependence and no build-up of tolerance, only the increase of ability to self-regulate.”

The Lief Rx Smart Patch can be worn discreetly throughout the day to help patients track their HRV and train it higher through personalized biofeedback exercises. Healthcare providers can use Lief’s free Clinician Dashboard to remotely enroll eligible patients in the Lief program, monitor their biomarker and self-report data, and send secure chat and video messages through the connected mobile app.

Lief’s fully remote program helps providers treat patients’ anxiety and communicate outside the office, thereby supporting nationwide social distancing measures. By enabling patients to reduce their anxiety through empowering biofeedback exercises and support from a remote behavioral health specialist, Lief extends the capabilities of care teams and helps ease the burden on health care facilities and providers.

Highlighting the growing need for remote mental health technologies like Lief in light of ongoing social isolation during COVID-19, the FDA noted in their updated policy guidance,“The use of digital health technologies, including software as a medical device or other digital therapeutics solutions, may improve mental health and well-being of patients with psychiatric conditions during periods of shelter-in-place, isolation, and quarantine.”

As a result of the updated policy guidance, patients can utilize Lief to further reduce their anxiety as a complement to talk therapy, their medication regimen, or another primary therapy as determined by their physician. The wearability and continuous monitoring capabilities of Lief offer a valuable tool for those in need of mental health support on a regular basis. Whether utilized in between appointments with their doctor as a routine well-being practice, or in response to acutely stressful events, Lief offers a flexible adjunct treatment option for those suffering from generalized anxiety disorder, who need more support during this challenging time.

Rohan Dixit, CEO & Founder of Lief shares, “Lief is designed to help people who need daily mental health support, which is particularly relevant during the current crisis when people are feeling stressed or worried every day. When you don’t have another appointment with your therapist or doctor until next week, or you need help calming yourself down in the moment when you’re feeling overwhelmed, Lief is there to help you.”

Lief Therapeutics is currently offering 10% off new users’ first month’s subscription to its direct to consumer telemedicine services with code NEWYEARSLIEF10.

About Lief Therapeutics

Lief Therapeutics offers biofeedback wearables for mental health to consumers and patients, access to telepsychiatrists, and a remote patient monitoring platform for healthcare providers. Lief Rx, Lief’s prescription-only device for patients, can be used as an adjunct treatment for generalized anxiety disorder after consultation with a physician. Top 10 Secrets to Happiness and Contentment During a Pandemic

News Image

“Learn as many of these secrets as you can; and apply them to your current life’s circumstances. If you do, I promise you will have happiness to go along with your face masks and social distancing,” Lucas said.

“What is the secret to happiness?”

There is no true answer to this question that is simple and short. Northwest Vista College Professor and Author Don Lucas, Ph.D, shares what psychological science has revealed as being the 10 secrets to happiness.

“Learn as many of these secrets as you can; and apply them to your current life’s circumstances. If you do, I promise you will have happiness to go along with your face masks and social distancing,” said Lucas, who is author of “Being: Your Happiness, Pleasure, and Contentment.”

1. Communal Friendships

The greatest secret to happiness is having communal friendships. Individuals in communal friendships have no expectations about the giving and taking that goes on within these friendships. Most friendships are not communal, but instead are reciprocal with individuals expecting equal amounts of giving and taking in their friendships. Communal friendships are driven by empathy, which allows a person to experience another person’s emotions. For example, if you are having a good day and feeling happy about it and you talk with a friend who is also having a good day and feeling happy about it; with empathy, you will feel twice as happy as you did when you were by yourself.

2. Social Relationships

The second secret to happiness is social relationships. Social relationships can be communal but are best defined as the reciprocal relationships in our lives: family, business partners, work colleagues, Facebook friends, acquaintances, neighbors, fellow church/synagogue/mosque worshipers, classmates, fellow sports fans… None of these social relationships is necessarily more important for happiness than any other. The importance of these social relationships is its diversity and total number. Simply put, happy people have more opportunities for social interactions than unhappy people do.

3. Extraversion

The third secret to happiness is extraversion, your ability and, in some ways, your energy to put yourself into a social setting. Happy people have higher levels of extraversion than unhappy people do.

4. Optimism

The fourth secret to happiness is optimism, your ability to put a positive light onto ambiguous and negative life situations. Happy people have higher levels of optimism than unhappy people do. The prototypical example of optimism—the optimist answering, “half full” to the question, “Is the glass half empty or half full?”—tells only a part of the story on how optimism is associated with happiness. The true measure of optimism and its association with happiness comes when situations are in-fact, negative. This is when the optimist’s attitude serves as a motivator to keep moving forward.

5. Marriage

The fifth secret to happiness is a unique relationship called marriage. Based on trust and faith in a life-long confidant, marriage makes people physically healthier. When compared to unmarried people, married people are less likely to get sick; and when they do get sick, they are more likely to recover and recover at a faster rate. In fact, married people have stronger immune systems and on average live 10 years longer than unmarried people do.

6. Employment

The sixth secret to happiness is employment. Employment is about friendships, social relationships, goal setting, personal achievement, and money. Employment as an adult is equal to play as a child.

7. Spirituality

The seventh secret to happiness is spirituality. Like marriage, spirituality is about trust and faith. The difference between marriage and spirituality is spirituality’s faith is ethereal. Meaning is significant when it comes to happiness. The greatest sources of distress and anxiety is ambiguity. When ambiguity is at the highest level—within the meaning of life—depression and apathy are likely to occur. Spirituality provides meaning at this highest level.

8. Subjective Physical Health

The eighth secret to happiness is subjective physical health. Subjective physical health is a person’s interpretation of their physical health and it is rooted in social comparison. For example, Maria, diagnosed with skin cancer following her annual physical, is happier than Susana, who received a clean bill of health following her physical. Maria’s first response after the diagnosis, “Thank goodness I have a treatable form of cancer!” (Her thoughts are focused on someone who has less than her; someone diagnosed with an untreatable form of cancer.) Susana’s first response after her physical, “But I am not as healthy as my sister.” (Her thoughts are focused on someone who has more than her; a sister who is an Olympic-caliber marathon runner.) As a rule, happy people socially compare their lives to those with less, whereas unhappy people socially compare their lives to those with more.

9. Democratic Freedom

The ninth secret to happiness is democratic freedom. Two conclusions have emerged from extensive studies comparing levels of happiness among countries, cultures, and societies: (1) No matter where you are on Earth, the No. 1 thing people want in their lives is happiness; and (2) The more democratic a government is in ruling its people, the happier the people will be.

10. Money

The last secret to happiness—which may be no secret at all to you, is money. The secret about money is how it must be used to gain happiness. If a person’s level of income threatens their basic human necessities (e.g., water, food, shelter), then having money to overcome this threat is predictive of happiness. However, once above this necessity line, the relationship between money and happiness is negligible. Beyond human necessities, happy people spend more money on others than they do on themselves, whereas unhappy people spend more money on themselves than they do on others.

In Your Control

Psychologists love to argue whether human behavior is by nature or nurture. With the 10 secrets to happiness revealed, it is clear happiness is mostly by nurture; you are in control of it. The only decision for you to make now is if you are going to take advantage of knowing these secrets by applying them to your own life—during this COVID-19 crisis and beyond.

Not Secrets to Happiness

Some items people often think are secrets to happiness but are not. There is no consistent scientific evidence for the following items being associated with happiness: biological sex, ethnicity, intelligence, physical attractiveness, leisure, and having children. Thus, men and women are no different from one another when it comes to being happy. No ethnic group is happier than any other is. The very intelligent are no happier than those with average or below average intelligence are. Physically attractive people are no happier than physically average and unattractive people are. People at leisure and on vacation are not necessarily happier when comparing them at work. And, being a parent makes you no happier than being a non-parent.

How about some Contentment to go along with Your Happiness?

Despite knowing and applying the secrets to happiness, happiness still can be fickle. We eventually grow accustomed to the things that bring us happiness and most of the things bringing us happiness are rooted in our environments. Thus, as time passes and environments change, so too does our happiness.

But, imagine for a moment, an emotion beyond happiness; that is, unaffected by time and changing environments.

Okay, stop imagining because this “beyond happiness” emotion is real, and it is called contentment. Contentment produces perpetual positive emotions from doing an activity—for the sake of doing it; contentment does not produce positive emotions from the activity’s causes or effects. For example, walking is an activity being used by a lot of us as temporary escapes from our COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders. And it can be a contentment activity, bringing perpetual positive emotions for us, unless we impose conditions on it, “I only walk when it is sunny outside,” “If I can’t track my steps on my Fitbit, then I don’t walk,” “My sister isn’t walking today, so I’m not walking today either.”

Contentment is nothing new; when we were children it was our primary motivator. Playing is the definitive example of contentment. The child at play gains positive emotions from playing anything. As every parent that has ever bought an expensive gift that came in a large box knows, it does not matter to the child “what” they are playing with (expensive gift or large box). The only thing that matters is they are playing.

A Challenge

In addition to applying the 10 secrets to happiness over the next several weeks, practice your contentments. We all have contentments in our lives, activities we do without conditions. Don says he teaches —anytime, any topic, to anyone; he cycles—anytime, anywhere, on any bike; he cooks—anytime; any cuisine, by any means… What are your contentments?

When Eating Disorders Complicate Pregnancy and Postpartum

Being a busy mom focusing on her infant child can be an effective cover for an eating disorder.

“I felt better about myself when I wasn’t eating. I was taking care of my baby. I was losing weight.”

It is not uncommon for women to experience mixed emotions during pregnancy. One moment, a woman may find herself feeling extremely excited for her new bundle of joy and the next moment worrying about the changes with her body and weight gain. For some who have a preexisting eating disorder, pregnancy could exacerbate their symptoms and behaviors while some who have a history of eating disorders may find themselves fearful of a relapse. Women who do not have an eating disorder history may find themselves experiencing disordered thoughts related to food, eating, and body image during pregnancy, which can be a disconcerting development.

The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) states that according to national surveys, 20 million women in America are estimated to have an eating disorder at some point in their lives [1]. These disorders include anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), or OFSED (other specified feeding or eating disorder). NEDA notes that an eating disorder can be triggered by pregnancy itself.

In addition to the emotional ups and downs of pregnancy, when a woman is faced with the challenge of discontinuing eating disorder behaviors, the battle between the disorder and the need to protect their unborn child can be intense. Many women adopt a ‘mama bear’ stance once they become pregnant: they focus on their baby’s needs for nutrition and care, and this determination helps them to abstain or reduce behaviors in order to protect their baby’s health.

Joanie S. (not her real name), who received treatment for her eating disorder in a partial hospitalization program, shared her experience. “I didn’t want my baby to have issues and I just needed to be healthy for nine months. There was an end date,” she said. By reminding herself about the importance of her baby’s needs and the fact that pregnancy is time-limited, she was able to hold on to the ‘mama bear’ mentality . Although this perspective may help some women refrain from using eating disorder behaviors, others find that being pregnant and having an eating disorder cannot be separated and “were bound to interact” [2].

After her baby is born, a woman’s body image dissatisfaction as well as negative attitudes toward food and eating can increase [3]. For individuals recovering from an eating disorder, negative body image is the greatest predictor of relapse. In fact, 80% of women who had a postpartum relapse reported significant body image distress and dissatisfaction [4]. Many women find themselves trying to lose the “baby weight,” and are in danger of triggering or exacerbating their eating disorder.

Joanie described her relationship with food and her body during pregnancy as being singularly focused on taking care of her unborn child. Becoming a “mama bear” during pregnancy staved off the eating disorder, and she didn’t experience a resurgence in behaviors until after the birth of her child. Joanie explained that it became easy to rationalize restricting her food intake during the postpartum period. “I felt better about myself when I wasn’t eating. I was taking care of my baby. I was losing weight.” Being a busy mom focusing on the needs of her infant child became an effective cover for Joanie’s eating disorder, while she was putting her own health at risk.

Although weight gain and body changes due to pregnancy are usually associated with something natural and/or positive, for women who have an eating disorder it can be difficult to grapple with how triggering their pregnant body shape can be. Many reported feeling fearful around weight checks with obstetricians during and after their pregnancy. Some women describe feeling fearful about how the information about their weight gain was shared with them by their physician [2]. While the postpartum period is an important time to attend to in their own healthcare, women with an eating disorder will often avoid physician visits out of shame and anxiety.

Many physicians do not screen for eating disorders or understand how to treat them. Due to ambivalence about asking for or receiving treatment, women are often reluctant to disclose diagnoses and/or behaviors. Further, there are often gaps in coordination between maternity care and other care providers. Joanie S., who is diagnosed with an eating disorder, stated, “I wasn’t educated about my eating disorder during pregnancy and after having my daughter.” She explained that she received an abundance of information on what to expect in terms of her child’s health and development, but did not receive any support for her eating disorder during pregnancy or postpartum. Like Joanie, women with an eating disorder benefit from professional before, during and after pregnancy to improve their health without harmful dieting and eating disorder behaviors.

According to ANAD, eating disorder symptoms may decrease during pregnancy, which could lead to the false assumption that all is well [5]. While women are busy with their newborns, revealing their difficulties and seeking help for their eating disorder can become even more challenging. However, eating disorders are serious disorders, and self-care is essential. Women are encouraged to talk to their obstetrician, gynecologist, or primary care doctor about any issues that arise during and after their pregnancy. Bringing in a list of questions/concerns during a postpartum visit is recommended. A postpartum visit should include a full assessment of physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Reproductive life plan, including birth control, health conditions or pregnancy complications, etc. are discussed during postpartum visits. It is also important to consult with a registered dietitian, seek individual therapy and/or support groups during this time.

If you believe you have an eating disorder, there are many online screenings. Bright Road Recovery offers a screening as well as the option to print up a letter to take to your doctor.
