ICSI Launches Mental Health Playbook for Healthcare Workforce

ICSI’s Mental Health Playbook

COVID-19 has accelerated the need for mental health solutions, and we need to be ready to support our healthcare workers on the front lines from an emotional standpoint, not just a physical one.

Representatives from ICSI announced that the first edition of a new Mental Health Playbook is now available. The Playbook was created to provide planning and implementation strategies to support the current and long-term mental and emotional wellbeing of the healthcare workforce.

The Mental Health Playbook provides a way for healthcare organizations to assess the overall mental health of their workforce, create a strong strategy to meet those needs and implement the plan in a fast yet effective manner. ICSI’s new Playbook outlines both universal stressors and unique stressors affecting specific roles within organizations, from support services, to leadership, to those on the frontlines treating COVID-19 patients. The Playbook outlines three Pillars of Implementation for providing mental health support: Crisis Command, Bi-Directional Communication and Take Action. Users of the Playbook can further define each Pillar based on a series of workbook-style questions

The Mental Health Playbook has its origins in an ongoing bi-weekly webinar open to healthcare leaders across the United States. These collaborative discussions were initiated to address the growing concern over the mental health and wellbeing of the healthcare workforce facing the challenges of COVID-19. During these webinars healthcare leaders in the community share existing and emerging practices being used to support their staff’s mental health. More information about upcoming Mental Health Support sessions can be found here.

“We’ve done a better job in recent years confronting issues like physician burnout and caretaker fatigue,” said Claire Neely, MD, ICSI President & CEO, “COVID-19 has accelerated the need for mental health solutions, and we need to be ready to support our healthcare workers on the front lines from an emotional standpoint, not just a physical one. I’m proud of our work with the Playbook, and I look forward to seeing it evolve and expand as needs change.”

Meridian Senior Living Launches Table Talks Program in Select Communities to Support Resident and Family Engagement

We are excited to offer Table Talks to Meridian communities to support connection, engagement, and socialization that residents and family members need in a safe manner.

Meridian Senior Living (Meridian) is excited to launch the Table Talks program to support resident and family engagement safely in select locations where government health departments have relaxed COVID-19 guidelines to allow for outdoor visitation at assisted living facilities.

Table Talks enables family members to visit and engage with residents after months of limited face-to-face interaction with prior visitation restrictions. These visits take place in an outdoor oasis planned and set up at the community to provide comfort and privacy. All surfaces in the oasis will be disinfected between visits for safety.

“Our priority is not only to meet the medical, mental, physical, and nutritional needs, but also the psychosocial needs of our residents,” says Kevin Carlin. “We are excited to offer Table Talks to Meridian communities to support connection, engagement, and socialization that residents and family members need in a safe manner.”

“This is such a wonderful program to reunite our residents and their families,” says David Henke, Executive Director of Brentwood at LaPorte in LaPorte, IN. “It is already infusing so much joy, smiles, and life in our community.”

Introducing the Table Talks program is an important key to support social engagement among the resident population. The National Institute on Aging has conducted several research studies that show a correlation between social interaction among older adults and their health and well-being. These emotional bonds can lead to healthier lifestyles including eating healthy foods, being active, and ceasing poor health habits.

As the COVID-19 virus is still prevalent and can be devastating to vulnerable populations, communities participating in Table Talks will continue to be vigilant in implementing strict infection control measures in conjunction with following and adhering to CDC in conjunction with local and state Departments of Health guidelines. To strive for the safest possible interaction, the Table Talks program has strict rules for participation. Some restrictions include that the visitor is required to schedule an appointment, undergo screening such as health questionnaires and temperature checks, limit number of visitors, wear a mask, and maintain physical distancing of six feet during the entire visit.

Meridian Senior Living Communities are still open and are admitting new residents for move-ins. In these times of isolation, it had been particularly difficult for older adults who may not have options to go out to obtain necessary items or socialize as society reopens. Meridian communities provide dedicated staff that are trained and certified to assist in daily support functions such as bathing, dressing, medication management and especially the ability to immediately respond to crisis situations. Furthermore, Meridian communities work diligently and creatively to ensure that their residents are engaged every day by providing activities such as hallway exercises, gardening, crafts, and creating music. To learn more about Meridian and find a community located near you, visit the website: meridiansenior.com or Facebook page: @Meridian Senior Living.

News Image

Now, more than ever, we are seeing first-hand the importance of trusted service providers like innovaTel who can step up to the plate and lead with experience and integrity. I’m proud to serve as co-chair of this esteemed group of thought leaders.”-Patrick J. Kennedy

innovaTel Telepsychiatry, a leading provider of psychiatric telehealth services, introduces the national thought leaders that have accepted positions on the Strategic Advisory Board (SAB). innovaTel looks forward to their expertise and guidance in support of innovaTel’s growth and primary mission to enhance timely access to care in an ever-expanding geographic footprint.

In 2020, there has been a welcomed expansion of telehealth due to the onset of COVID-19. This expansion has increased access to patient care due to many of the regulatory barriers being lifted. While the use of telehealth is new to some, it is not new for innovaTel Telepsychiatry. innovaTel has been delivering behavioral health services exclusively via telehealth technology for the last six years in partnership with community-based organizations. Looking forward, the next several years promise to be exciting and productive for telepsychiatry and innovaTel.

innovaTel’s Strategic Advisory Board is led by co-chairs Patrick J. Kennedy, former U.S. Rep. and founder of the Kennedy Forum, and Linda Rosenberg, past President and CEO of the National Council for Behavioral Health, who are joined by the following board members:

  • Robert Caudill, MD: Director of Telemedicine and Information Technology Programs at the University of Louisville
  • Patricia R. Coleman, MBA: President & CEO of Behavioral Health Response, Inc.
  • David Gomel, PhD: President & CEO of Rosecrance, Inc.
  • Pamela Greenberg, MPP: President & CEO of the Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness

innovaTel Telepsychiatry has enjoyed consistent growth over the past six years as a result of the outstanding contributions of our Strategic Advisory Board, administrative, and clinical teams.

Jonathan Evans, co-founder, and CEO of innovaTel Telepsychiatry stated, “innovaTel is excited to re-confirm our work with this group of distinguished national leaders in the field of behavioral health. We look forward to receiving guidance in regards to the thoughtful implementation of telepsychiatry to further our mission of timely access to care.”

“Telepsychiatry will continue to play a critical role in addressing our nation’s mental health crisis, which will be greatly impacted by COVID-19,” said former U.S. Rep. and founder of The Kennedy Forum Patrick J. Kennedy. “Now, more than ever, we are seeing first-hand the importance of trusted service providers like innovaTel who can step up to the plate and lead with experience and integrity. I’m proud to serve as co-chair of this esteemed group of thought leaders.”

Linda Rosenberg, co-chair of innovaTel Strategic Advisory Board shares, “We’ve struggled with how to improve access to treatments for mental illnesses and addictions while the world around us embraced consumer convenience – think Google, Amazon, and Uber. And think innovaTel – the company that brings behavioral treatment to people. It’s my privilege to lead innovaTel’s Strategic Advisory Board alongside Patrick J. Kennedy. innovaTel’s roots are in community mental health and their psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and social workers are highly skilled, experienced professionals. They’ve been there during the tragedy of COVID-19 and they are committed to continuing to deliver effective, convenient care. I’m proud to be part of the innovaTel family.”

About innovaTel Telepsychiatry: innovaTel Telepsychiatry is a clinically owned and operated telepsychiatry company that was founded in 2014 to address the shortage of psychiatric clinicians. innovaTel’s nationwide network is comprised of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and licensed clinical social workers with a focused mission to enhance timely access to care by partnering with community care centers.

Warriors Heart and Humana Military announce an In-Network Agreement for Addiction and posttraumatic stress Treatment for “Warriors Only”

Private residential treatment provider Warriors Heart is now an in-network provider for Humana Military as of 6/17/2020.

We are grateful to be in-network with Humana Military, as it lowers the barriers to entry for our nation’s warriors in a private facility like Warriors Heart. – Josh Lannon, Warriors Heart Founder and CEO

Private residential treatment provider Warriors Heart announces that they are now an in-network provider for Humana Military, exclusively for “Warrior Class Members.” Warriors Heart has been certified and credentialed as a TRICARE non-network provider since 4/18/2017. As of 06/17/2020, Warriors Heart is now an in-network Humana Military provider for the East Region.

As the first and ONLY private licensed and accredited residential treatment center in the U.S. exclusively dedicated to healing our protectors struggling with chemical dependency, posttraumatic stress and other co-occurring psychological issues, this Humana Military agreement will allow Warriors Heart to expand its reach and lowers the out-of-pocket costs to beneficiaries. Warriors Heart accepts TRICARE for all regions and is now in-network with Humana Military.

Founder and CEO Josh Lannon shared, “We are grateful to be in-network with Humana Military, as it lowers the barriers to entry for our nation’s warriors in a private facility like Warriors Heart.” Warriors Heart is on the front lines to address social determinants of health.

While other private residential treatment programs may offer “tracks” for warriors, they are mixed with civilians. Other than the VA (Veterans Administration), Warriors Heart is the only private residential treatment center in the U.S. solely for “Warrior Class Members”. Because Warriors Heart is for “peers only,” warriors can openly share versus feel a stigma or shame when asking for help. The effects of being on the front lines of war can take a toll. Warriors no longer have to deal with trauma in silence and through coping mechanisms such as alcohol.

After treatment, Former Navy Seal Mike H reflected, “What separates this place from the rest of them is the people. People come here, and they care about you. They hire people specifically who understand what we’ve been through, and they really understand where we’re coming from, not only as addicts, but as people of a service-oriented mindset…You’re in a really good place. Welcome home.”

The Warriors Heart property was formerly a corporate retreat and conference center, whose clients say; “does not feel like a hospital.” The facility is designed to let warriors heal in a safe and comfortable place with a private chef, fitness center, pool, wood and metal shop, private lake, fishing, running trails and luxury amenities. The program focuses on a holistic healing for the mind, body, and spirit 24×7.

Media Contact for Warriors Heart:

Liz Kelly, 310-987-7207

About Warriors Heart (Bandera, Texas right outside San Antonio):

Warriors Heart is the first and only private and accredited treatment program in the U.S. for “Warriors Only” (military, veterans, first responders, and EMTs/paramedics) faced with the self-medicating struggles of alcohol, prescription and/or drug addiction, posttraumatic stress (post-traumatic stress disorder), mild TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and other recurring issues. It’s a private, 60-bed facility on a 543-acre ranch founded by Josh Lannon (successful treatment provider in long-term recovery), Lisa Lannon (Former Law Enforcement Officer) and Tom Spooner (Former Army Special Operations). Along with a 42-day residential treatment program, Warriors Heart provides “Warriors” detox, inpatient, Intensive Outpatient, Telehealth Outpatient, and Sober Living. Warriors Heart has been operational since April 2016, and officially received the Gold Seal of Approval® for Behavioral Health Care Accreditation in November 2016 and re-accredited in August 2019. 5 Mental and Physical Wellness Tips for National Men’s Health Week

Men’s Health Has Never Been More Important Than Now

We’re helping consumers choose healthier options. And that’s really never been more important than now.

Created by Congress in 1994, National Men’s Health Week aims to raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection of diseases that typically impact men. Celebrated the week before Father’s Day every year, it provides an opportunity to educate men about what can be done to improve their health. With a shift in emphasis from disease treatment to prevention, both healthcare costs and lives can be saved.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading causes of death among men are heart disease, cancer and unintentional injury. Early detection and the adoption of healthy habits can help limit the cases of life-threatening diseases. Here are five pragmatic, health-improvement tips:

Exercise: Regular exercise can help prevent, or even reverse, heart disease—the leading cause of death in the U.S. Exercise increases the levels of “good” HDL cholesterol while helping to flush “bad” LDL cholesterol from the body.

Eat Healthy: Nutrition is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. A heart-healthy diet calls for eating healthy fats, such as raw nuts; colorful fruits and vegetables; high-fiber foods, like pasta and bread; and high-quality protein, including fish and poultry. Cutting trans fats, commonly found in commercially-baked goods and fried food, is equally important for preventing heart disease and living a healthy lifestyle. Some foods and drinks, including processed meats and alcohol, have been linked to certain cancers.

Get Adequate Sleep: Studies have linked insufficient sleep with an increased risk of developing cancer. And sleep deprivation can leave people at a higher risk of developing various cardiovascular diseases—regardless of age, weight, exercise habits and history of smoking. Sleep requirements vary between persons, but, in general, adults need seven to nine hours per night.

Quit Smoking: Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer. But it also makes smokers more likely to suffer from a heart attack. According to CDC data, men are more likely to smoke than women, and cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S.—accounting for more than 480,000 deaths every year.

Focus on Mental Health: According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), 48,344 Americans died by suicide in 2018 (derived from the latest available CDC data). And the rate of suicide is highest in middle-aged white men. Focusing on mental health may be more important than ever during these stressful times. Practicing mindfulness, exercising, volunteering in the community, keeping a gratitude journal, practicing positive self-talk and, if needed, seeking professional counsel are all ideas for improving mental health.

“We are happy to take an active role in helping to improve men’s health,” said Healthy YOU Vending’s Director of Operator Services, Jill Navidomskis. “By helping our independent operators offer healthier choices in workplaces and other facilities throughout the country, we’re helping consumers choose healthier options. And that’s really never been more important than now.”

The Digital Wellness Institute announces first-of-its-kind digital wellness certification program for health professionals, leaders and educators

News Image

The Digital Wellness Institute is pleased to announce the launch of its Digital Wellness Certification Program, starting July 13th. Designed by leading experts in the field, this program equips organizational leaders, mental health practitioners and educators with research-based solutions and tools to embody and teach digital wellness.

Digital Wellness is the optimum state of health and well-being that every individual using technology is capable of achieving. Digital Flourishing™ is the unique, empowerment oriented approach of The Digital Wellness Institute. It refers to a mindful approach to digital technology usage that supports our thriving in different areas of life. This approach empowers us to take advantage of the benefits of technology while avoiding associated harms.

The launch of the certificate program follows the first annual Digital Wellness Day on May 1, which celebrated and empowered individuals, communities and organizations with tools and strategies to flourish in a digital age. Over 35,000 people attended virtual events from locations around the world, and over 1.2 million people were reached with free, educational resources created by the Institute’s sister organization, The Digital Wellness Collective.

The success of the inaugural Digital Wellness Day was followed by a magnitude of requests for Digital Wellness educational resources and immersive programming. Much of the current interest in the upcoming certificate program has been triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has radically shifted public conversation about technology. Given that so many people are now working remotely and will be doing so indefinitely if not permanently, public discourse about the effects of technology has shifted from negating technology to exploring how people can most effectively manage their relationship with technology themselves.

“In many ways, COVID-19 accelerated the future of work into the present,” says Nina Hersher, Co-Founder Digital Wellness Institute and CEO of the Digital Wellness Collective. “Our team is delighted to be launching The Digital Wellness Certificate Program – designed to address the critical core competencies of leadership in a virtual world.”

The certificate program will cover the following topics and more in the context of digital wellness: physical health; mental health; relationships; communication; productivity; digital citizenship; quantified self; and environment – helping registrants to update their leadership toolkits and essential skills for both employee and client wellness in a digital world.

About the The Digital Wellness Institute

The Digital Wellness Institute strives to be a catalyst for transformational change in the understanding and implementation of digital wellness practices, offering certificate programs and other educational resources to equip learners with the terminology, models and tools for creating sustainable, positive change with the use of technology.

Media Inquiries:

Nina Hersher, CEO of the Institute, will be speaking at The Humanitech Conference on June 17, 2020, alongside leaders of the other prominent organizations in the field including The Center For Humane Technology, Common Sense Media, and The Children’s Screen Time Action Network. DWC Co-founder Amy Blankson of the UN Global Happiness Council will be speaking at the upcoming Digital Wellbeing Festival on June 30, 2020 – also World Social Media Day.
