Uniper Care Secures $4 Million in Funding to Combat Loneliness and Isolation among Older Adults

COVID-19 highlights the importance of using technology to improve the lives of our most vulnerable population – older adults.

Uniper Care, an integrated social engagement and telehealth company focused on older adults, announced today that it closed $4 million in funding to combat the issue of loneliness and isolation among older adults, marking $7 million in funding to date. The funding round was led by Zeev Ventures, a Palo Alto venture capital firm that previously invested in successful high-growth startups like Houzz, TripActions, Hippo Insurance, and Tipalti. Included in the round are Mediterranean Towers Ventures, a strategic investor in early-stage technology companies developing disruptive solutions for aging, and a group of angel investors. The capital will be used to accelerate product development and expand the company’s global sales and marketing efforts. The funding round was completed in April 2020, in the midst of COVID-19.

“COVID-19 highlights the importance of using technology to improve the lives of our most vulnerable population – older adults,” says Oren Zeev, Founding Partner of Zeev Ventures. “We are proud to support the growth of an important innovation that will help older adults stay active physically and mentally, improving their overall health and quality of life.”

Uniper Care transforms a television set or any mobile device into an interactive communication and activity hub where older adults can access live and interactive wellness programs, receive remote health care, and video-communicate with family and friends. The key features of the technology-enabled service include:

  • Evidence-based programs demonstrated to help flatten the loneliness curve among older adults
  • HIPAA-compliant telehealth module that allows older adults to engage remotely with health care professionals using accessible channels like their TV set, tablet or laptop
  • An analytics dashboard that enables health plans and healthcare organizations to assess an individual’s health status, risks, and habits
  • A multi-platform, turn-key solution with a whole-person approach to improving Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) for older adults and at-risk population

“Our service can facilitate clinical assessments,” says Rami Kirshblum, CEO of Uniper Care. “Health plans and providers can remotely assess if their members are at risk for depression, anxiety, or a potential fall, so that medical intervention can mitigate these issues at the onset, assuring higher quality of care for older adults.”

Uniper Care partners with health plans, health providers, hospitals, assisted living facilities, non-profits, and government organizations to reduce health care cost for seniors while increasing the quality and accessibility of care. The solution has been deployed across the United States, including with the US Department of Veterans Affairs, to alleviate the loneliness and isolation that older adults and the at-risk population experience during and beyond COVID-19.

“The health and wellbeing of the older adult population is one that is crucial to the healthcare system,” says Dr. Yael Benvenisti, CEO of Mediterranean Towers Ventures. “As the older adult population grows exponentially, now is more important than ever to provide a solution that keeps them active and engaged in a meaningful way. We are honored to be a part of Uniper’s mission to empower older adults to thrive and stay socially active as they grow older.”

modern clinical technology helps scientists to accelerate the development of new therapies and vaccines

The durability, near real time performance and quality of data collection, processing and analysis are instrumental in our daily operations and it is enormously important in the COVID-19 studies

EDETEK, the premier provider of digital clinical trial computer systems, today announced that the company’s cloud-based eClinical and clinical informatics platforms CONFORM™ are supporting multiple clinicals sponsors in research and development of emergent COVID-19 treatments and vaccines.

Jian Chen, EDETEK’s President and CEO, “Our customers use CONFORM ™ in Phase I, II and III COVID-19 clinical trials. In some trials our Platform is used entirely as an end to end clinical system. Customers also implemented selective CONFORM™ components to add efficiency to the existing development workflows. It is exciting to see how rapidly our team and the system can fit into the emergent research and development of the COVID-19 therapies and vaccines. We have invested years in development of the state of the art comprehensive and highly configurable clinical system and I am thrilled to see how it is helping scientists battle the global pandemic”.

The CONFORM™ eClinical suite of study conduct applications is utilized for patient randomization, clinical supply, trial and document management, drug safety monitoring and electronic data capture. CONFORM™ Informatics platform enables rapid ingestion of clinical structured and unstructured data from a variety of clinical data providers, data aggregation, validation, transformation, review and reporting in one system that quickly integrates with information consumers – processes and systems of study sponsors and sites. In the case of COVID-19, CONFORM™ studies were configured, tested, and deployed in a matter of days to meet the highly challenging timelines of clinical development teams.

CONFORM™ was architected to support modern clinical trials that concurrently use variety of systems to collect information. EDC, laboratory systems, instruments, IoT patient wearable devices, imaging, ePRO smart phones, EHR applications represent a typical set of digital sources in a trial. COVID-19 trials employ many of these data providers to study different safety and efficacy indicators in record time.

“Using the capabilities of our Information Hub and Clinical Data Lake to quickly connect and aggregate the data were keys in these implementations. Another main differentiator of CONFORM™ is the event driven model. CONFORM™ is fully event driven and it processes any business and scientific events as well as data loads in real time according to sponsors’ workflow and study configuration. The durability, near real time performance and quality of data collection, processing and analysis are instrumental in our daily operations and it is enormously important in the COVID-19 studies where we receive tens of thousands of data transmissions every day and run complete study data processing and reporting tasks several times a day. The era of a slow-going typical EDC study with a nightly processing batch is gone. COVID-19 has shown us that the traditional model is no longer working”, states Peter Smilansky, Senior Vice President of Product Development and Strategy of EDETEK.

CONFORM™ GxP–compliant technology platform is natively designed for scalable cloud computing. It runs on Amazon Web Services supporting COVID-19 and hundreds of other clinical trials on three continents.

Ksana Health Selected to Support Landmark Study on Adolescent Brain Development and Child Health

Improving Mental Health Through Research and Innovation

Ksana Health

“After a competitive review process and pilot of EARS, we knew it was the right platform for the next phase of the study.”

Ksana Health today announced that their Effortless Assessment Research System (EARS) has been selected by the ABCD Study® to provide an integrated system to help understand how adolescents use their mobile phones and the impact of the devices on their brain development and mental health. The EARS Research Platform is new technology developed by the University of Oregon’s Center for Digital Mental Health and exclusively licensed to Ksana Health to passively obtain sensor data from natural mobile phone use and map those data to known indicators of mental health.

Launched in 2015, the ABCD study is following nearly 12,000 youth, including 2,100 who are twins or triplets, for at least 10 years starting at ages 9 to10. ABCD is an NIH-supported, multi-institute research program that will generate robust data about how young brains mature. The study recently announced $290 Million in new funding to follow the children into important transitional periods of middle school and high school where device usage increases dramatically.

“The EARS platform stood out for its ability to automatically and objectively collect data without creating extra burden for our participants. This is critical so we can give clear, scientifically grounded advice to parents, educators, and teenagers themselves about the impact of phone use on healthy development.” said Dr. Susan Tapert, ABCD Associate Director (Assessments) “After a competitive review process and pilot of EARS, we knew it was the right platform for the next phase of the study.”

The EARS Research Platform is a comprehensive solution for mobile sensing and Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) research. The platform integrates a dedicated mobile app which passively collects data, a HIPAA compliant cloud-based data upload and storage system, a cloud-based HIPAA compliant control of communication with participants (i.e., EMA questions and notifications), a web-accessible (desktop and mobile) real-time data quality monitoring dashboard for research staff, and services to support data processing (feature extraction) and data analysis.

The ABCD study is the latest group to select the EARS platform for their innovative research projects. Previous customers include researchers at Duke University, University of California Irvine and the Children’s Hospital of Bern, Switzerland.

Meridian Senior Living Partners with Major U.S. Based Testing Laboratory to Procure COVID-19 Tests for their Communities

meridian senior living logo

This is an extension of our ongoing commitment to keep our communities as safe as possible, while decreasing the risk of issues that arise from long periods of isolation, both with our residents and seniors in the towns and cities in which we operate.

National operator Meridian Senior Living has partnered with a major U.S. based testing laboratory to procure a large supply of COVID-19 tests that will allow for more frequent testing of symptomatic residents and staff, and decreased quarantine time frames for new admissions.

Meridian Senior Living operates more than 75 communities across the country and co-manages 24 communities in China. Their U.S. communities remain open and committed to serving seniors who need or want their services.

“Our collaboration with the lab and the appointment of our Medical Director is a vital pivot point in our reopening strategy. We now have the resources and medical expertise to routinely test,” says Kacy Kang, President and Chief Operating Officer of Meridian Senior Living. “This is an extension of our ongoing commitment to keep our communities as safe as possible, while decreasing the risk of issues that arise from long periods of isolation, both with our residents and seniors in the towns and cities in which we operate.”

In addition to the testing that may be required by local or state health authorities, Meridian wants to ensure they had other tests at their disposal to align with their own operational goals to reopen communities safely and in a phased approach.

In most cases, the new tests will allow for new admissions to quarantine for less time once admitted to the community, with multiple negative tests required to decrease their quarantine time from the previously enforced 14 days.

“We don’t want the 14-day quarantine to deter someone who could benefit from our communities,” said Kevin Carlin, Principal and Chief Sales Officer of Meridian Senior Living. “Our new policy is strict and thorough to keep our communities safe, while welcoming new residents who need us.”

Houston Native, Rashad Garrett Creates Faith of a Mustard Seed Therapy App Bridging the Gap for Accessible Mental Health Services in COVID-19 Pandemic

Faith of a Mustard Seed Therapy App Logo

I wanted to bridge the gap between counseling and technology by providing a preventative source to the society’s growing epidemic of depression. We just want people to have a place to turn to when they feel overwhelmed and or struggling with Mental health issues – Rashad Garrett

Houston Life coach, Rashad Garrett, has thrown a lifeline to those struggling with mental health problems during the pandemic and beyond with the launch of his new app, Faith Of A Mustard Seed (FOAMS).

The global pandemic has caused a drastic increase in the number of people dealing with mental health issues. In fact, a Federal Agency emergency helpline dedicated to helping people in emotional distress registered more than a 1000 percent increase in April for their service in comparison to the same period last year. But despite the growing demand for mental health services, therapists are struggling to bring their services online due to restrictions with reimbursement and licensing.

With the current state of affairs, the FOAMS App has never been timelier. Touted as the social therapy app, the FOAMS app offers a space for individuals to grow socially and emotionally by providing help for issues such as depression, anxiety, self-identity, abandonment, insecurities, low self-esteem and much more. Users of the app can access one-on-one personal therapy from the platform’s clinicians that include Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Licensed Therapists, and Life Coaches. Sessions are facilitated via phone, video calls, and live chats; users can even send in-app messages to their counselors.

FOAMS is a black-owned, LGBTQ business blazing the trail for a new kind of Telehealth. When asked about the motivation for creating the app, CEO and Founder, Rashad Garrett, explained: “I wanted to bridge the gap between counseling and technology by providing a preventative source to the society’s growing epidemic of depression. We just want people to have a place to turn to when they feel overwhelmed and or struggling with Mental health issues.”

For those who prefer self-help, the FOAMS app hosts free podcasts that focus on self-help techniques by industry leaders. There is also 24/7 access to forums and discussions moderated by life coaches and special guests as well as articles on topics such as abuse, relationships, panic attacks, depression, and more. FOAMS app also offers motivational apparel for children and adults.

The FOAMS App is available for free download in the Apple and Google app store. For further information, or to shop FOAMS apparel and other merchandise visit https://www.foamstherapy.com/.
