Gaggle to Host Student Wellness Series of Webinars

News Image

“Even before the pandemic struck, modern-day students were experiencing a mental health crisis,” said Gaggle’s CEO and founder, Jeff Patterson. “It’s no longer enough to simply protect students in a physical sense. We have to consider the whole child from a social and emotional standpoint.”

With all the disruptions to students’ daily routines and the social isolation that many across the country are still experiencing, more attention than ever needs to be paid to their psychological well-being. This fall, Gaggle will host the Student Wellness Series: four webinars featuring experts on a variety of topics impacting the mental and physical well-being of today’s K-12 students.

“Even before the pandemic struck, modern-day students were experiencing a mental health crisis,” said Gaggle’s CEO and founder, Jeff Patterson. “Reports indicate that approximately 10 million young people between the ages of 13 and 18 are in need of professional help for a mental health condition. It’s no longer enough to simply protect students in a physical sense. We have to consider the whole child from a social and emotional standpoint.”

The Student Wellness Series will run from mid-October through mid-November. Interested educators can register for the free webinars by visiting https://news.gaggle.net/student-wellness-fall-2020. The schedule for the series is as follows:

Eating Disorders

October 13 at 4:00 PM ET

These complex conditions, which can seriously impact students’ mental and physical health, often require both medical and psychological intervention. Dr. Lisa Strohman, an expert on student mental health, will explain how eating disorders affect adolescents.

Incels

October 20 at 1:00 PM ET

Bruno Dias, the director of safety and security at Mansfield Independent School District in Texas, will lend his expertise on this topic.

Anxiety

November 2 at 1:00 PM ET

Anxiety and depression are on the rise, with 70% of teens seeing these issues as a major problem. Dr. Lisa Strohman will join attendees again for this session along with Christine Ravesi-Weinstein, an educational leader, mental health advocate, and author of “Anxious: Advocating for Students with Anxiety, Because What if it Turns Out Right?”

Cutting

November 17 at 1:00 PM ET

Students suffering from depression and anxiety may turn to cutting, a form of self-harm, as a way to release their pain and emotions. Dr. Lisa Strohman returns for the final installment of the Student Wellness Series.

For the past 21 years, Gaggle has been committed to helping K-12 districts manage student safety on school-provided technology. Using a powerful combination of technology and trained safety experts, the safety solution proactively assists districts around the clock in the prevention of student suicide, bullying, inappropriate behaviors, school violence, and other harmful situations. The company recently launched Gaggle Therapy, which matches students who need mental health support with counselors licensed in their state for weekly teletherapy sessions.

The Trevor Project Releases New Research Report Focused on Black LGBTQ Youth Mental Health

News Image

To improve Black LGBTQ youth mental health and well-being, we need more research, investment, and intersectional solutions that confront systemic barriers head-on.

Today, The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people, released a new research report that examines mental health indicators and suicide risk factors among Black LGBTQ youth, including negative interactions with law enforcement, conversion therapy, housing instability, food insecurity, and barriers to mental health care.

Both LGBTQ youth and Black youth report higher rates of poor mental health due to chronic stress stemming from the marginalized social status they have in U.S. society. The intersection of identities for Black LGBTQ youth make them particularly susceptible to increased victimization and mental health concerns. However, despite the existence of these unique challenges, very little research has quantitatively explored outcomes specific to Black LGBTQ youth. “All Black Lives Matter: The Mental Health of Black LGBTQ Youth” utilizes an intersectional lens to better understand the Black LGBTQ youth experience among a national sample of over 2,500 Black LGBTQ youth by highlighting and building upon many of the findings released from The Trevor Project’s 2020 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health as they relate to Black LGBTQ youth.

Key findings include:

-44% of Black LGBTQ youth reported seriously considering suicide in the past 12 months, including 59% of Black transgender and nonbinary youth and half of all Black LGBTQ youth ages 13-17 years old.

-60% of Black LGBTQ youth who wanted mental health care were not able to get it, with more than half citing affordability as the reason they weren’t able to get it.

-Black LGBTQ youth who were involved with police victimization due to their sexual orientation or gender identity reported rates of suicide attempts (32%) that were nearly double that of youth who were not (17%).

-Black LGBTQ youth who had high levels of family support had nearly 3 times lower rates of suicide attempts in the past 12 months. However, less than 1 in 3 Black LGBTQ youth actually reported having high levels of family support.

“Black LGBTQ youth hold multiple marginalized identities, and with that, comes unique stressors and challenges that may make them more susceptible to poor mental health outcomes,” said Myeshia Price-Feeney, Ph.D., a Research Scientist at The Trevor Project. “To improve Black LGBTQ youth mental health and well-being, we need more research, investment, and intersectional solutions that confront systemic barriers head-on. The Trevor Project hopes this report will serve as a call to action for researchers, youth-serving organizations, and policymakers to approach their work through the dual lenses of LGBTQ inclusion and anti-racism.”

The report in its entirety can be found here. Visit TheTrevorProject.org/Resources for resources supporting LGBTQ youth and mental health, including Black and LGBTQ: Approaching Intersectional Conversations and Supporting Black LGBTQ Youth Mental Health.

If you or someone you know is feeling hopeless or suicidal, The Trevor Project’s trained crisis counselors are available 24/7 at 1-866-488-7386, via chat at TheTrevorProject.org/Help, or by texting START

to 678678.

Gary Sinise Foundation and Warriors Heart join forces to heal Veterans and First Responders struggling with PTSD and Substance Abuse

Warriors Heart is grateful to the Gary Sinise Foundation for awarding a grant to the Warriors Heart Foundation to provide clinical services for warriors struggling with PTSD and substance abuse.

Through joining forces with exceptional organizations like Warriors Heart, we are also committed to treating the invisible wounds that afflict so many of our veterans and first responders. – Bobby George, Director of Outreach for the Gary Sinise Foundation

In sync with Mental Health Awareness Week (Oct 4-10, 2020), the Gary Sinise Foundation and Warriors Heart announce that they are working together to heal veterans and first responders struggling with PTSD and substance abuse. Earlier this year, the Gary Sinise Foundation awarded a grant to the Warriors Heart Foundation to treat at least three first responders and veterans each month: one of which was U.S. Navy Veteran Zakri Zoeller.

After completing the Warriors Heart program this summer, Zoeller reflected; “God definitely has something planned for me because I should’ve been arrested. I don’t know how I didn’t kill myself.” Zoeller is now working as a car salesman, and is saving up money to buy a wedding ring for his girlfriend Sam.

Warriors Heart Founder and CEO Josh Lannon expressed his gratitude, “We are truly grateful to the Gary Sinise Foundation for supporting Warriors Heart’s ‘Strength Through Healing’ programs so warriors like Zakri can heal with peers without the stigma or shame often felt when asking for help.”

“Gary Sinise started our Foundation in 2011 out of a desire to raise spirits and improve the mental health of our service members and their families. The Gary Sinise Foundation is dedicated to supporting and honoring those, like Zakri Zoeller, who so bravely served our nation,” said Bobby George, Director of Outreach for the Gary Sinise Foundation. “Through joining forces with exceptional organizations like Warriors Heart, we are also committed to treating the invisible wounds that afflict so many of our veterans and first responders.”

Along with the Warriors Heart evidence-based clinical programs, this program works on the mind, body and spirit to replace bad habits with good ones. Some of Warriors Hearts’ non-traditional tools include jiu-jitsu, meditation, wood and metal shop, fishing on-site, biofeedback, gym, and the Warriors Heart K-9 Program working with emotional support dogs.

The PTSD and substance abuse statistics for warriors emphasize why there is an urgent need for these programs. Sadly, the U.S. loses more soldiers at home versus in combat with an average of 17 veteran suicides per day in the U.S. (2019 National Suicide Prevention Annual Report, US Department of Veteran Affairs) and 1 Law Enforcement Officer suicide every 62.5 hours. More than 1 out of every 4 veterans with PTSD also have a substance abuse disorder (National Center for PTSD at the Department of Veterans Affairs). The latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health from SAMHSA (2018) also found that roughly 80 percent of veterans have a substance use disorder.

Warriors Heart’s Vision is to “Bring 1 Million Warriors Home” by rebuilding their lives, with the help of like-minded organizations like the Gary Sinise Foundation.

After Zakri completed the Warriors Heart program, his father said, “We got our old Zak back.”

Today, Zakri says, “Life is good.”

Michael C. Bush, CEO Great Place to Work, to Keynote at 2020 Global Wellness Summit on Why Equitable Workplaces Are Better for Business

The GWS announced that Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work® and renowned workplace culture expert, will keynote at its conference November 8–11, 2020, at The Breakers Palm Beach, Florida.

The pandemic has created a major shift in work culture—forcing many businesses to become more flexible when it comes to remote workers, for example. At the same time, there’s been an acceptance of the fact that racial inequality permeates every aspect of our lives.

The Global Wellness Summit (GWS), the foremost gathering of international leaders in the multi-trillion-dollar global wellness economy, today announced that Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work® and renowned workplace culture expert, will keynote at its conference November 8–11, 2020, at The Breakers Palm Beach, Florida. The theme of the 2020 GWS is “Resetting the World with Wellness,” and Bush will be one of the experts exploring how innovative and more democratic wellness concepts could transform human life post-COVID-19.

Bush’s presentation, which will include new research conducted during the pandemic with hundreds of the world’s leading CEOs, is entitled, “A Great Place to Work For All,” and is based on his organization’s inclusive leadership model and book by the same name. Bush will outline the importance of wellness and inclusivity in creating positive workplaces and quantify the ROI that these businesses achieve, such as typically outperforming peers in the stock market.

“The pandemic has created a major shift in work culture—forcing many businesses to become more flexible when it comes to remote workers, for example. At the same time, there’s been an acceptance of the fact that racial inequality permeates every aspect of our lives. These two monumental moments have created new challenges and opportunities for business leaders across the globe,” said Susie Ellis, GWS chair and CEO.

Great Place to Work is a global authority on high-trust, high-performance workplace cultures, operating in over 60 countries, providing the benchmarks, framework and expertise needed to create, sustain and recognize outstanding workplace cultures. The company is responsible for popular workplace lists, including “Best Workplaces for Women,” “Best Workplaces for Millennials,” and “Best Companies to Work For.”

Bush’s popular workplace culture book “A Great Place to Work For All” has garnered kudos and recommendations from CEOs of some of the world’s leading companies, including Intuit, Salesforce, Kaiser Permanente, PwC and Marriott International. Said Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff: “The most successful companies have a higher purpose and are built on a foundation of trust, growth, innovation, equality, and making the world a better place for all. “A Great Place to Work For All” shares the essential values that every organization should follow to thrive in the future.”

More about Bush:

Michael C. Bush is a global chief executive with over 25 years of experience leading small and mid-sized organizations through transformational growth.
