Cancer Support Community CNJ Honors Jason P. Schaible Memorial Fund and Merck & Co., Inc. at Socially Distant Event

Guests arriving at Inspiring Hope Under the Stars

“CSCCNJ is a community of hope. And while being virtually connected is essential during these times, we felt it was important to be physically together this evening—even if it is a bit different than usual” Amy Sutton, CEO of CSCCNJ.

Cancer Support Community Central NJ (CSCCNJ), like most organizations, has been forced to face head-on the challenges created for non-profits by the COVID-19 health crisis. But the fear, stress, and anxiety that many feel during these uncertain times are what people with cancer and their loved ones experience all the time when faced with a cancer diagnosis. With a 51% increase in average program attendance in the first month of stay-at-home orders, CSCCNJ knows that that now, more than ever, their social and emotional support services are vital to the wellbeing of the community.

To raise the funds necessary to keep its vital programs available virtually, the committee planning CSCCNJ’s largest fundraiser of the year, Inspiring Hope, understood the importance of creating a successful experience for their benefactors. Knowing that traditional events held in ballrooms or banquet halls were not an option, and fearing there would be “Zoom fatigue,” the Inspiring Hope Committee used their creativity and grit to create an opportunity for people to physically come together and celebrate community in a safe, socially-distanced way.

On September 24, Inspiring Hope became Inspiring Hope Under the Stars, held on a fairway at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club, with guests in golf carts outfitted with boxed appetizers, entrees (a choice of lobster roll or sliced filet mignon sandwich) and dessert; beverages; and a goodie bag with hand sanitizers, face masks, glow sticks, and mosquito repellant wipes. From their golf cart, guests were treated to live music and a mission-focused program broadcast on a 40 ft. movie screen.

Inspiring Hope Under the Stars was unlike previous years—and guests were able to dress more casually than a traditional dinner event—but the focus on mission and celebrating the honorees of the Nancy and Marty Dowd Spirit of Hope Award was unchanged. “CSCCNJ is a community of hope. And while being virtually connected is essential during these times, we felt it was important to be physically together this evening—even if it is a bit different than usual—to honor two of our valued partners, the Jason P. Schaible Memorial Fund and Merck & Co. Inc.; who are making a tremendous impact, not only on our work, but on the lives of so many people affected by cancer in the community,” said Amy Sutton, CEO of CSCCNJ.

The event raised over $130,000 to enable CSCCNJ to continue providing emotional and social support services at no charge to people with cancer, survivors, loved ones, caregivers, and bereaved.

The Jason P. Schaible Memorial Fund is an organization rooted in community and created in memory of Jason Schaible, who lost his battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on August 11, 2007. Throughout his lengthy battle with cancer, Jason never lost sight of the importance of friends, family, and the community. His message to all those who knew him was to always strive to be the best they can be by “Raising the Bar” every day. In partnership with the fund, CSCCNJ has provided non-medical financial, social, and emotional support to families impacted by a pediatric cancer diagnosis. One family who benefited from this partnership shared their cancer journey and presented the award to the fund’s founders, Dr. Vincent and Mrs. Karen Schaible.

Merck & Co., Inc. has been a crucial partner in CSCCNJ’s Multicultural Outreach Initiative, which is grounded in cultural humility, to educate and empower vulnerable populations before and during a cancer experience, allowing them to live fully through and beyond the diagnosis. During the pandemic lockdown, outreach to vulnerable populations has grown by 70% thanks in large part to the tireless work Hiral Shukla, a recently hired Public Health Coordinator, and the critical relationships with community organizations that she has developed. Thanks in part to Merck & Co.’s generosity, Shukla was added to the team.

Inspiring Hope Under the Stars was supported by Ambassador Sponsors: BD, JLL, and Merck; and Benefactor Sponsors: Carecycle, East West Connection, Eli Lilly and Company, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp, PwC, Regional Cancer Care Associates Central New Jersey, RWJBarnabas Health, Sanofi US, Schaible Russo Financial, Schaible’s Plumbing and Heating, Inc, and Taiho Oncology.

About Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey:

Backed by evidence that the best cancer care includes social and emotional support, CSCCNJ creates a caring community to help individuals live with, through and beyond cancer. At no charge to people with cancer, family members, and caregivers, the organization delivers essential programs and services including individual and group support; educational, nutrition, and healthy-cooking workshops; classes to enhance health and wellness; and activities that build social connections. Nemours Children’s Health System Launches Precision Medicine Initiative

Clinical decision support provided by ActX will allow us to apply pharmacogenomic results alongside clinical information to arrive at the best medication and dose for the patient

Nemours Children’s Health System has added the ActX Genomic Decision Support system to its electronic health record (Epic), enabling the use of genetic information to better predict drug response in its pediatric patients. By understanding how a child’s genetic profile may affect drug response, providers can choose safer and more effective medications for patients.

Nemours has integrated ActX Genomic Decision Support within Epic, used in the care of nearly half a million children annually throughout the nation’s only multi-state children’s health system. This integration brings pharmacogenomics to the point of care by enabling real-time checking of each prescription order against the patient’s pharmacogenomic profile. Prescribing providers will be alerted if a drug may be ineffective, may cause an adverse reaction, or requires a dosing change based on the patient’s genetic information, all within the normal prescribing workflow. The initial pharmacogenomic panel at Nemours includes pharmacogenes related to commonly used medications such as certain antidepressants, opioids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs.

“Choosing the right medication at the right dose is extremely important for children,” said Pamela H. Arn, MD, Medical Director of Precision Medicine. “Clinical decision support provided by ActX will allow us to apply pharmacogenomic results alongside clinical information to arrive at the best medication and dose for the patient.”

The new platform was initiated at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. Over the coming months, the service will continue to develop across the Nemours enterprise with goals to first expand the scope of practice in the Delaware Valley, then to expand to Jacksonville and Orlando, FL by early 2021. The pharmacogenomics service will also allow for unique research opportunities and collaboration.

“We are excited to partner with Nemours to bring precision medicine and pharmacogenomic decision support into pediatric care,” said Dr. Andrew Ury, CEO of ActX. “The ActX platform will help make actionable pharmacogenomics practical for Nemours’ physicians and their patients.”

Nemours’ implementation of ActX within Epic marks a big step toward making precision medicine the norm for its patients.

About ActX

ActX helps physicians make better decisions about medical treatment, using patients’ genetic information. ActX uses its GenoACT℠ clinical decision support program to analyze a patient’s genetic information and alert physicians in real time through their existing workflow tools about drug-genome interactions, actionable hereditary risks and carrier status. For more information, info@actx.com or (888) 998-2289.

About Nemours

Nemours is an internationally recognized children’s health system that owns and operates two free-standing children’s hospitals: Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., and Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Fla., along with outpatient facilities in five states, delivering pediatric primary, specialty and urgent care. Nemours also powers the world’s most-visited website for information on the health of children and teens, KidsHealth.org, and offers on-demand, online video patient visits through Nemours CareConnect. Nemours ReadingBrightstart.org is a program dedicated to preventing reading failure in young children, grounded in Nemours’ understanding that child health and learning are inextricably linked, and that reading level is a strong predictor of adult health.

Established as The Nemours Foundation through the legacy and philanthropy of Alfred I. duPont, Nemours provides pediatric clinical care, research, education, advocacy and prevention programs to families in the communities it serves.

Psychologist says to stop focusing on perceived “problems” and what is “wrong” with you in order to be happy

ISBN: 978-1634933698 (trade/paperback)

ASIN: B08JGXRTSR (eBook)

Release date: Out now!

Cost: $25 USD paperback, $9.99 eBook

http://www.advancedpragmaticpsychology.com

There is nothing “wrong” with you that needs to be fixed in order to find happiness, says author of Advanced Pragmatic Psychology, Susanna Mittermaier.

With a recent, alarming study from the University of Chicago finding that just 14% of Americans consider themselves to be “very happy”, it is clear that happiness feels out of reach for many.

Psychology used to be the art of “knowing”, but has turned into the study of behaviour and right versus wrong, says Mittermaier. “Pragmatic Psychology is about empowering you to know that you already know what is right for you and about creating a life that works for you” she says.

However, the solution to finding this supposedly elusive happiness is not to “fix” what we believe to be wrong with us, says Mittermaier. With the release of her new book Advanced Pragmatic Psychology, co-authored with Access Consciousness co-founder Gary Douglas, Mittermaier hopes to invite readers to discover what is true for them when it comes to creating the life they want, instead of “buying into” what is being presented to them by the world.

“Traditional psychology somehow evolved into a need to determine what we have to change about ourselves in order to be happy and create a life of joy. But what if you aren’t the ‘problem’ – and you just need different tools to navigate the world and create a life that brings you joy!” she says.

Implications for Clinical Research in a Post-COVID Era, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

The decentralized or virtual research model has become the standard in the current climate and this shift is helping to unlock the promise of telepsychiatry.

Telepsychiatry has always offered a tantalizing solution to the significant undertreatment of mental illness. With COVID-19, widespread stay-at-home measures and reduced offerings for face-to-face mental health services has skyrocketed the demand for in-home care and accelerated the promise of telepsychiatry.

Innovative decentralized or virtual trials are taking telepsychiatry in mental health research to the next level—that is, bringing it to the patient’s home.

During this interactive discussion, panelists will highlight the patient journey for a fully decentralized major depressive disorder (MDD) trial, including methodology for centralized raters, real-time patient dosage monitoring, and patient behavior insights from measured digital biomarkers to evaluate depression. We will also share insights for effective recruitment of a diverse patient population using a digital approach to attract and then engage participants.

The decentralized or virtual research model has become the standard in the current climate and this shift is helping to unlock the promise of telepsychiatry.

Join Thuy Le Nguyen, MPH, Senior Associate Director, Boehringer Ingeheim, Christopher Reist, MD, MBA, Medical Director, Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, Science 37, Isaac Galatzer-Levy, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer, AiCure and Gary Sachs, MD, Clinical Vice President, Signant Health in a live webinar on Friday, October 23, 2020 at 9am EDT (1pm BST/UK).

The criteria included:

Join SheFactor’s Virtual Wellness Summit on October 29, 2020

News Image

I’m excited to be a part of SheCares Wellness Summit because change starts here with each of us. In order to do better we have to feel better – in body, in mind and in spirit.

On October 29, 2020 SheFactor will host an incredible one-day virtual event, targeted at Women in the Workforce (ages 24+) to provide mental health, self-care, and overall wellness support during these challenging times. The goal of this SheFactor Wellness Summit is to bring thousands of attendees together, giving them the ultimate toolkit to self-care with guidance and tips from the country’s most successful women on how they do it all. As part of the summit, SheFactor will be launching the SheCares Foundation and donating 50% of all proceeds from the event back to its new non-profit organization to support women in need.

The SheCares Wellness Summit will host incredible special guests like Peloton instructor and founder of S.P.E.A.K. Tunde Oyeneyin, sought-after speaker and author Brit Barron, and founder of Asutra Stephanie Morimoto with a guest appearance from tennis star Venus Williams. This joy-filled day will feature conversations with change-makers like Kendra Scott’s Head of Philanthropy, lively panel discussions regarding anti-racism and diversity, as well as fun, practical workshops like PicMonkey’s vision boarding workshop and Pepperose Design’s workshop, Cultivating Joy & Healing Through Floral Design.

“I believe that we are all here at this exact moment in time to be the creators of great change,” said Oyeneyin. “When the new world is formed they will ask if we watched as it was being created, or if we had a hand in its creation. I’m excited to be a part of SheCares Wellness Summit because change starts here with each of us. In order to do better, we have to feel better – in body, in mind, and in spirit. Today we fill up our cups to better pour into those of others.”

Each attendee will have access to the content of the event for six months after October 29th, allowing them the freedom to take it at their own pace and enjoy all 30+ workshops. They will also receive a virtual goodie bag with tools, worksheets, and special offers to complement the sessions, and an opportunity to win a beautiful giveaway box with gifts from speakers and sponsors based on their participation.

“I think self-care and wellness are always important but the times we find ourselves in now make it even more important,” said Barron, who recently spoke at Rachel Hollis’ Rise Live Conference alongside Jay Shetty, Trent Shelton, and other notable speakers. “I can’t wait to talk about self-care, being free, finding joy, finding hope, and living through all the things we’re experiencing right now.”

Why is the SheCares Wellness Summit so important right now? One-third of American women are currently reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression. 56% of American women are struggling with sleep or eating problems, potential alcohol abuse, or worsened chronic conditions since the virus’s outbreak. The national suicide hotline has had a 338% increase in call volume.

Participants will walk away with a toolkit to use every day to build a healthy, balanced lifestyle while building strong bonds and new friendships with other women facing similar struggles. The summit will help women take control of their mental health, reduce stress, find balance in their daily life, and to feel empowered to achieve their goals while performing their best at work.

“Most working women sacrifice their mental health and wellness for the sake of their job, career, or family,” said Tori Ganahl, co-founder of SheFactor. “The SheCares Wellness Summit focuses on self-care, mental health, wellness, and allows the attendee to invest in herself. Investing in the confident, strong woman we know she is.”

Tickets for the SheCares Wellness Summit are $35. Those interested may also inquire about corporate discounts and pricing. To register, please visit: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/shecares-wellness-summit-by-shefactor-tickets-122472485501
