The Lustgarten Foundation hosts Seeing Beyond, Lustgarten’s inaugural pancreatic cancer research symposium

Seeing Beyond sessions were moderated by world-renowned pancreatic cancer experts, David Tuveson, MD, PhD, Director of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Cancer Center and Lustgarten Chief Scientist, and Elizabeth Jaffee, MD, The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and Lustgarten Chief Medical Advisor. Dr. Tuveson led Session I: “Redefining Early Pancreatic Cancer—Detection and Interception,” which featured presentations from Brian M. Wolpin, MD, PhD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Marcia (Mimi) Canto, MD, MHS, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Anne Marie Lennon, MBBCh, PhD, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Peter J. Allen, MD, Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Jaffee led Session II: “Clinical Research – Towards Personalized & Targeted Pancreatic Cancer Treatments,” which included presentations from Jen Jen Yeh, MD, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jennifer J. Knox, MSc, MD, FRCPC, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and Vinod P. Balachandran, MD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Seeing Beyond also showcased a poster session, highlighting the pioneering work and accomplishments of Lustgarten’s unique LABS (Lustgarten Advancing Breakthrough Science) Programs.

The Lustgarten Luminary Award was presented to Bert Vogelstein, MD, Professor of Oncology, HHMI Investigator, the Ludwig Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, for his visionary and groundbreaking contributions to pancreatic cancer research. Dr. Vogelstein gave an illuminating lecture, noting, “The future is now for pancreatic cancer research and having foundations like the Lustgarten Foundation who have the courage to fund creative research are essential.” Dr. Vogelstein has led the LABS (Lustgarten Advancing Breakthrough Science) site at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD since 2019 and is one of the world’s most cited scientists.

“The progress we’ve made over the past 25 years is encouraging but there’s still much more work to be done,” said Andrew Rakeman, Lustgarten Foundation VP of Research. “The only way to better understand this devastating disease is through steadfast research and the Lustgarten Foundation is leading the way.”

In 1998, 51-year-old Marc Lustgarten, Cablevision Vice Chairman, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Shocked by the lack of treatment options, the Lustgarten Foundation was created to advance the research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer while raising public awareness and providing support for patients and their families. This year, Lustgarten Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary as the driving force in every major advancement in pancreatic cancer research. For more information, visit http://www.lustgarten.org.

Final CMS Rule Puts Dialysis Patients At Risk

DVAC strongly supports the Providing Relief and Stability for Medicare Patients Act of 2023 (H.R. 3674), introduced by Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12), Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-CA-29), Rep. Greg Murphy, MD (R-NC-3), and Rep. Danny Davis (IL-D-7). This bipartisan legislation will prevent ongoing cuts to office-based specialists for the next two years. By doing so, it will help stop major disruptions for dialysis patients.

Dr. Dean Preddie, DVAC’s policy chair, said, “Should the final rule remain in place, it will significantly curtail patient access to life-saving care. These cuts are unsustainable and are putting providers out of business and exposing patients to greater risk of serious illness and even death. Congress must pass H.R. 3674, the “Providing Relief and Stability for Medicare Patients Act of 2023,” which would stop the ongoing cuts to office-based specialists. This is important legislation that will address insufficient Medicare physician payments and ensure the continuity of vital office-based specialty care, preventing specialists from closing their doors and leaving patients in the cold.”

Rimidi Partners with Brighter Day Health Foundation, Bringing Remote Patient Monitoring Capabilities to Atlanta Church Communities

The first two Atlanta churches implementing the RPM program are Impact Church and Word of Faith Family Worship. Currently, 350 patients are enrolled in the program, of which 80% are African American, 35% are male, 65% are female and average around the age of 55. The patients have access to a nurse practitioner and registered dietitian on the weekend to aid in managing their chronic condition, while also providing ongoing patient education around nutrition. Within the program, the clinical staff at the church also develop benchmarks for each patient and provide blood pressure cuffs that connect back to the Rimidi platform, where the clinical team can remotely track blood pressure, receive notifications about concerning readings, and monitor trends. Patients are then able to work with their clinical team on a regular basis to monitor levels and nutrition, adjusting treatment plans appropriately.

“Chronic diseases are some of the most prevalent, yet challenging conditions to manage, especially when social determinants of health can create barriers to care. Therefore, it’s our responsibility as a clinical management platform to reduce those barriers through innovative technology, such as RPM,” said Lucienne Ide, MD, PhD, Founder and CEO of Rimidi. “Our partnership with Brighter Day Health Foundation is aiming to meet patients where they are–literally–in their communities. Together, we will seek to provide individuals who currently may have limited access to healthcare within the Atlanta community with new tools and services to better manage their chronic conditions and improve their health overall.”

“Our goal at Brighter Day Health Foundation is not to take the place of the primary care provider, but to provide timely secondary interventions that help preclude ‘rising risk patients from becoming high risk patients.’ Our faith-based model brings people into the healthcare system by creating new care access points and removing the non-clinical barriers to care that have historically plagued minority and underserved communities,” said Eric Nixon, MPH, President and CEO of Brighter Day Health Foundation. “I’m excited to collaborate with Rimidi to provide these communities with the patient education, clinical staff, RPM tools and long-term support they need to improve or better manage their chronic conditions, all within a trusted environment.”
One patient enrolled in the program reported that, “with the support of the clinic and my primary care doctor, I have been able to lose 50 pounds this year and my A1C is out of the prediabetic range and my blood pressure has normalized.”

Kimberley R. Alexander Named Executive Director Of Moms Of Black Boys United, Inc. (MOBB United) And M.O.B.B. United For Social Change, Inc. (MUSC)

With a remarkable 30-year career in healthcare, Alexander steps into her role as Executive Director with a multifaceted understanding of operations, management, and communications. Her experience as an Assistant Director of Nursing at East View Healthcare and Zion Healthcare, her tenure as an Assisted Living Manager at Brazos Towers Assisted Living, and serving in significant roles of increasing responsibility at Texas Children’s Health Plan exemplifies her capacity to lead with compassion and efficiency.

In addition to her extensive healthcare background, Kimberley has made significant contributions to M.O.B.B. United as a national leader and board member, demonstrating her dedication to empowering and advocating for Black boys and young men. She created vital mental health and autism awareness programs, offering invaluable support to families facing the unique challenges presented by having children with special needs. Kimberley has counseled families navigating the challenges of loss, and played a key role in advocating for initiatives such as criminal justice reform in Louisiana; ‘Raise The Age’ Legislation in New York; and Bail Reform in California. She also spearheaded a successful internship program, promoting opportunities and nurturing the growth of 13 interns since its inception.

Kimberley’s dedication to advocacy is deeply rooted in her role as a mom of four, especially as the parent of children with special needs. This personal experience informs and fuels her unwavering commitment to the mission of M.O.B.B. United, as she intimately understands the unique challenges and injustices faced by Black boys and men. It’s this empathy and firsthand understanding that propels her to strive for a more inclusive and just society for all.

“I am honored to take on the role of Executive Director at Moms of Black Boys United. Our mission is close to my heart, and I am committed to empowering Black boys and young men to navigate a world that often misunderstands them. Together, we will make a difference,” said Alexander.

Kimberley’s relationship with M.O.B.B. United began when her then 9-year-old son faced the unwarranted threat of arrest, prompting her to channel her outrage into action. This pivotal moment inspired Alexander – whose path to motherhood began as an unwed teen – to join the organization and advocate not just for her son, but for all children facing systemic racism and a lack of voice.

Now, as the new Executive Director of M.O.B.B. United, Kimberley is steering the organization toward a future defined by inclusivity, justice, and empowerment. Her vision includes strategic initiatives such as a new podcast titled “The New Talk: For Moms Of Black Boys,” which will launch on November 28, focused on empowering moms to change how they talk to, about, and for their Black sons to navigate our world. The podcast will be available on LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube and Spotify.

In line with M.O.B.B. United’s organizational pillars, Kimberley will advance critical mission directives rooted in these core principles:

  • Change Perceptions: continuing efforts to challenge and transform prevailing societal perceptions of Black boys and young men, fostering a world where they are seen through a lens of humanity and equity.
  • Influence Policy: advocating for policy reforms that address systemic issues affecting Black boys and young men.
  • Demonstrate Our Power: mobilizing the M.O.B.B. United community to collectively assert its influence and advocate for meaningful change.
  • Partner Strategically: seeking alliances and partnerships that amplify M.O.B.B. United’s impact and reach.
  • Promote Self-Care: developing programs that support the well-being and resilience of the M.O.B.B. United community.

With Kimberley R. Alexander at the helm, M.O.B.B. United is destined for an even greater impact as she galvanizes moms in their work to foster a society that sees their Black sons through the lens of humanity, dignity, and respect that they undeniably deserve.
