New App Targets Student Mental Health Crisis in Pandemic

This is a new extension to Ajivar - a safe and non-judgmental forum for all college students to support and connect with each other through school and in life.

Ajivar Real YOU community

Real YOU is a safe space to be who you are.

Know a university student who is struggling because of COVID-19? You’re not alone. More than eight out of 10 college students are experiencing significant levels of anxiety because of COVID-19, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. And not just students, but staff and faculty also increasingly feel isolated, anxious, and depressed as a result of the pandemic.

On February 12, 2021, the Ajivar platform will launch a new functionality—the Real YOU community—specifically designed to help university students, faculty, and staff connect and support each other in this time of crisis.

Real YOU is a free service available to any member of a higher education institution no matter where they are located in the world. As a safe and supportive virtual meeting place, Real YOU uses emotional intelligence-based prompts and tools to encourage members to talk about their life and academic struggles, and to respond to each other using compassionate and caring language.

“Real YOU is a safe space to be who you are,” says Trine Schmidt, co-founder and chief therapist of Ajivar, who created and manages the Real YOU community. “Although you are anonymous, there’s no hiding behind a profile picture, name, geography, or status. Instead, you truly connect with others by revealing your own vulnerabilities and responding to peers with empathy and compassion.”

The Real You community is part of Ajivar’s mission to help college students, faculty and staff improve emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and resiliency through mindfulness techniques and emotional intelligence curriculum-based training. It is a component of the Ajivar app, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered life coach specifically designed for the higher education market. With every interaction, Ajivar learns more about each user as well as the institution, and is able to make increasingly personalized recommendations.

Ajivar is available for colleges and universities to license for their communities. The app can be customized to act as a centralized platform for students to access all the wellness services that institutions offer, such as counseling, hotlines, mindfulness or yoga classes, or peer counseling groups.

In addition to psychological wellness aid, Ajivar helps improve individuals’ self-awareness, productivity, self-efficacy, and leadership skills. Ajivar is deployed at a growing number of colleges in the United States.

Real YOU was conceived out of a sense of urgency during the Covid crisis, says Raj Goyal, co-founder and CEO of Ajivar. “We heard from our users how they were suffering from not being able to connect with friends and family, and from being denied typical college social activities,” he says. “And once we created the Real YOU functionality, we knew we had to help all higher-education institutions—even those not yet on the Ajivar platform.”

Real YOU is an opportunity for college students to support and empower each other, to decrease the separation and isolations that many have felt over the past year. “By helping all students in this way, we can effect true global cultural change, which is our mission,” says Goyal.

Like the Ajivar app, the Real YOU community component is simple to use. Anyone with a “.edu” email address can sign up. Members can send hugs and words of affirmation to others with just the click of a button. A “Question of the Week” engages everyone in in-depth conversations about relatable life situations. Ajivar also offers volunteer training so that students can achieve an official “Real YOU supporter” certification status, a way to grow their emotional intelligence skills and to be of even more help to their peers.

Join the Real YOU community by going to https://ajivar.com/real-you-community.

Four Key Ways to Get your Relationship out of Lockdown

Master Life and Relationship Coaches Stefanos Sifandos and Christine Hassler also happen to be a married couple, and they’ve uncovered the four essential areas to increase intimacy and connection.

As coaches and spouses, we’ve seen firsthand what it really takes to have a thriving and passionate relationship.

This past year brought on countless unexpected changes and put a strain on many relationships. According to the National Law Review, 2020 saw at least a 20% increase in divorce rates from the previous year.

How can couples change the course of their relationship for the better in 2021?

Master Life and Relationship Coaches Stefanos Sifandos and Christine Hassler (as heard on The Joe Rogan, Aubrey Marcus, Ben Greenfield and Mark Groves podcasts) may have found the answer. Along with having over 30 years of combined experience, coaching thousands of individuals and couples, they also happen to be a married couple.

“As coaches and spouses, we’ve seen firsthand what it really takes to have a thriving and passionate relationship,” said Sifandos. “We know that what makes a relationship last is relatively simple: healthy communication, fast and effective repair of conflict, emotional intimacy, and connected sex,” said Hassler.

Here are four key ways to get your relationship out of lockdown.

Heat Up Your Sex Life

Sex usually takes a backseat to the bills, kids, responsibilities, family dynamics, stress, and balancing work with life. We’ve seen it happen with countless couples. So what’s the secret to better sex? The two key things to heating up your sex life is to never stop “dating” your partner and never stop “learning” about sex. Dating your partner means staying curious about your partner and who they are becoming, rather than holding them in the past and who they have been. Learning about sex means not being stuck in a rut! Continue to explore, research, and try new techniques so sex doesn’t become boring and routine. Remember sex education in high school? Then all of a sudden, sex education just sort of stopped. Be the perpetual student. Share your fantasies openly and safely, learn new techniques, incorporate breath practices, and get comfortably uncomfortable with exploring unknown dimensions of yours and your partner’s sexuality. Sex becomes stagnant through monotony and that equates to a rupture in intimacy and connection.

Communicate Like A “Love Boss”

Expressing yourself and communicating effectively aren’t always the same thing. No matter how long you and your partner have been together, you most likely have fallen into some communication patterns that are keeping you from actually seeing and loving each other the way you could be. One way to optimize your relationship is by communicating like a Love Boss. That means asking for what you need with compassion, respect and confidence. (Pro tip: this means doing your inner work, moving beyond old fears and learning to love yourself – more on that later). Communicating in extremes, such as suffocating your voice in order to make others feel better, or being aggressive in order to get your way, are both not healthy. When we don’t speak our needs into the container of the relationship we build resentment (stale anger) and that leaks out into how you treat each other. How you express matters!

Create Argument Agreements

Arguing is not really a thing to avoid in a relationship. The problem actually resides in couples building distance and resentment in the relationship by attempting to avoid conflict in hopes that it will be “swept under the rug”. The difference between happy, healthy couples and unhappy couples is not found in the amount they argue, but rather how quickly they can recover from arguments. Healthy couples are able to quickly recover from arguments and navigate conflict because they’ve formed agreements in a calm state about how they are going to argue (when they are not in an argument). For example: agree to not storm out of the room, agree to not name call, agree to take space to calm down, agree not to argue in front of others, agree to talk about what was learned from the argument, agree to let go of being right and seek to understand the other’s POV, etc. By talking (not yelling), and forming “fighting rules,” couples will be able to navigate conflict more smoothly.

Upgrade your Coping Strategies

When we are young, we form coping strategies or mechanisms to deal with difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, these become the habitual way we respond and are usually unhealthy. As adults, these “habits” or strategies continue to play out, irrespective of whether they are applicable to the present moment or your current partner. Especially during challenging times! Some common habits observed in couples are things like: shutting down, getting angry, or even pleasing people, which leads to resentment and creates distance. What a couple can do to get their relationship out of lockdown is create a “pattern break action”. This is an action that will shift the pattern of how things normally go. Couples have chosen a dance move, a song verse to sing, or anything that interrupts the bad habit when it begins to emerge.

Therapist-led groups serve as a sounding board and provide support. They ease a sense of isolation and promote social skills development. Lifestyle Medicine coaching leverages a healthy diet, physical activity, sleep, and strategies to avoid risky substances. It helps clients manage emotions, confront negative thinking, improve relationship skills, and reduce stress and anxiety, all of which bolsters mental health. Reviving Mind’s unique approach of having dual-trained therapists that double as lifestyle medicine coaches is a game-changer in addressing mental health and lifestyle challenges. It provides the continuum of care to clients needed to improve outcomes that are traditionally very difficult to achieve.

Reviving Mind’s therapist-coaches prepare personalized healthy food, physical activity, and sleep programs. In addition, they teach mindfulness techniques to help patients with their overall mood and reduce tobacco and alcohol dependencies.

More than that, we’re looking to support patients in their drive to improve their overall health. We’re excited to formally announce our program today and to bring it to more people.”

“The group has helped me greatly with my stress and anxiety. The group members helped me through the tough times, and the therapist could not be better. I am grateful for Reviving Mind,” said a Reviving Mind Client.

ACHA Releases New White Paper on Addressing E-cigarette Use and Vaping on College and University Campuses

The American College Health Association (ACHA) announces the release of its newest white paper, Addressing E-cigarette Use and Vaping on College and University Campuses. Written by members of the ACHA Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Coalition, this white paper examines current data on e-cigarette use among adolescents and undergraduate students, which include the risk for dependence and health consequences, the ramifications of targeted e-cigarette marketing to youth, and the importance of tobacco cessation.

The new white paper also outlines multiple strategies on how college and university campuses can play a role in ending the trend of e-cigarette use in campus communities.

These strategies include:

  • Implementing evidence-based prevention and education.
  • Promoting awareness with student health providers and student affairs personnel.
  • Making tobacco treatment accessible and relevant.
  • Promoting tobacco-free campus policies that include e-cigarettes.

“The e-cigarette and vaping epidemic facing our young people is a public health crisis that demands immediate and deliberate action across many levels,” says Michael Huey, MD, Interim Chief Executive Officer of ACHA. “College and university campuses have a unique opportunity to prevent initiation, provide support for treatment and empower this generation of young people to take action to protect their individual and collective health.”

“We do not want to see millions of more adolescents become dependent on e-cigarettes or other tobacco products, especially as they transition to college campuses,” says Delynne Wilcox, PhD, MPH, CHES, chair of the ACHA Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Coalition. “As leaders in college health and wellness, we have both the opportunity and responsibility to protect and support our students through building awareness, providing tobacco cessation resources, and advocating for stronger regulation and comprehensive tobacco-free campus policies.”

The new white paper, Addressing E-cigarette Use and Vaping on College and University Campuses can be downloaded at https://www.acha.org/documents/resources/guidelines/ACHA_Addressing_E-cigarette_Use_and_Vaping_on_Campuses_January2021.pdf.

The Power of Vulnerability – New Study Looks At The Advantages of Showing One’s Weaknesses

Hiding vulnerabilities can be self-protective, but also self-limiting.

People who recognize their weaknesses use this self-awareness as an incentive and fuel for growth and self-improvement.

You can’t help but respect someone who has the courage to admit a flaw and the stamina to keep trying, moving forward, and striving for self-improvement.”

What draws people to superheroes? Certainly their enviable, superhuman capabilities, but also the fact that their formidableness was bred from their vulnerabilities. Batman, Green Arrow, The Crow, and even Harry Potter, used their personal tragedies as motivation to make the world a better place. Most people’s natural instinct is to hide their weaknesses, so as not to fall prey to mockery, rejection, or unscrupulous villains. While this is certainly sensible, a recent study conducted by PsychTests.com indicates that people who are open about their flaws reap many more benefits than those who don’t.

Analyzing data from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, researchers at PsychTests examined the attitude, personality, and behaviors of people who are willing to show their vulnerabilities (“Wielders”), and those who don’t (“Shielders”). Here is what the study revealed:

WIELDERS HAVE HIGHER EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

> They are more comfortable expressing their feelings (score of 64 vs. 39 for Shielders – a 25-point difference, on a scale from 0 to 100)

> They are better at identifying what they are feeling (score of 75 vs. 57 – an 18-point difference).

> They are more skilled at regulating their emotions (score of 65 vs. 49 – a 16-point difference)

> They are more self-aware (score of 73 vs. 59 – a 14-point difference).

WIELDERS ARE HAPPIER

> They are more satisfied with their life (score of 70 vs. 54 – a 16-point difference).

> They are more optimistic (score of 73 vs. 57 – a 16-point difference).

> They have higher self-esteem (score of 74 vs. 59 – a 15-point difference).

> They are better at motivating themselves (score of 71 vs. 58 – a 13-point difference).

WIELDERS ARE MORE INTERPERSONALLY SKILLED

> They are better at dealing with emotional situations or people (score of 68 vs. 47 – a 21-point difference).

> They are more assertive (score of 63 vs. 47 – a 16-point difference).

> They have better conflict-resolution skills (score of 78 vs. 64 – a 14-point difference).

> They have a more flexible mindset (score of 77 vs. 65 – a 12-point difference).

WIELDERS ARE MENTALLY TOUGHER

> They have better coping skills (score of 76 vs. 65 – an 11-point difference).

> They are more resilient (score of 77 vs. 67 – a 10-point difference).

> They are more adaptable (score of 63 vs. 53 – a 10-point difference).

> They are less likely to engage in excessive rumination (score of 39 vs. 57 – a 19-point difference).

> They have a lower need for approval from others (score of 28 vs. 40 – a 12-point difference).

“That instinct to hide our weaknesses was a valuable survival skill when humans first walked the Earth. This inclination still serves us to some degree, like when a boxer hides an injury during a fight, or a negotiator disguises his or her desperation when trying to make a deal, but there is much to be gained from acknowledging our flaws in most settings,” explains Dr. Ilona Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “It helps us connect with people on a personal level, and gives us the motivation we need to improve ourselves. This is why people who are vulnerable are also so resilient. They have the self-awareness and the courage to admit to themselves and others that they are not perfect – that they made a mistake, have a skill gap, don’t know something, or that their brain is simply not wired for a specific task. With that awareness, they can take concrete steps to remedy the situation, and by doing that, they make it clear that they refuse to let their perceived weakness hold them back. That’s not only empowering, it also makes vulnerable people endearing. You can’t help but respect someone who has the courage to admit a flaw and the stamina to keep trying, moving forward, and striving for self-improvement.”

“The irony is, if you cover up your weaknesses and refuse to work on them, you’ll always feel vulnerable, and therefore, will always feel the need to hide the truth,” according to Dr. Jerabek. “You also make it more likely that at some point, someone will call you out on the issue, and that’s exactly what the Shielders in our study fear the most. The best approach is to simply own your flaws, and then take concrete steps towards self-improvement.”

InSight + Regroup, the Leading Telepsychiatry Provider, Announces Rebrand, Changes Name to Array Behavioral Care

News Image

“The name Array represents our ability to offer services across the continuum of care and the breadth of opportunities we offer to clinicians.”

InSight + Regroup, a recognized leader in telepsychiatry and telebehavioral health has unveiled a new name, new logo and new website as part of an extensive rebranding initiative. The organization will now be known as Array Behavioral Care, a name that highlights their unique ability to deliver modern, quality behavioral health care to settings ranging from hospitals to homes.

“The time was right to modernize, streamline and simplify our brand identity,” said Geoffrey Boyce, Chief Executive Officer.

“The name Array represents our ability to offer services across the continuum of care and the breadth of opportunities we offer to clinicians,” said David Cohn, Chief Growth Officer, who led the rebranding efforts.

“We also wanted something that expresses our focus on innovation within the behavioral space while conveying a positive, hopeful tone. Our new brand symbolizes continuous growth while representing who we are, what we do, where we’ve been and where we want to go as an organization.”

The Array clinical team started practicing telepsychiatry in 1999 when its Chief Medical Officer, Jim Varrell, MD provided the nation’s first commitment via telepsychiatry.

In December 2019, InSight Telepsychiatry and Regroup Telehealth joined forces to form the largest telepsychiatry service organization in the country under the name InSight + Regroup.

In 2020, the organization positioned itself for significant growth by conducting hundreds of thousands of telepsychiatry sessions and hiring 325 new clinicians. The team made rapid expansions to its Array AtHome service line, formerly known as Inpathy, as consumers and clinicians alike shifted to totally remote options. Array also developed creative partnerships that integrated behavioral health services into primary care practices and launched programs that allowed for hospitals and health -systems to leverage teams of telebehavioral health clinicians in order to efficiently meet COVID-related spikes in mental health demand.

For 2021, the Array team forecasts significant enhancements and scaled-growth within their three service lines as well as a major investment in the organization’s growing ‘people’ function.

“We are prioritizing programs that cement Array as the employer of choice for forward-thinking behavioral health clinicians and administrators,” says Kelly Lewis, Array’s recently appointed Chief People Officer. “The Array brand perfectly encompasses the myriad of opportunities, the supportive, mission-driven team and the commitment to inclusion that this organization values.”

This rebranding, which was supported by branding firm Addison Whitney, solidifies Array’s value proposition and positions the organization as the industry-leader in modern behavioral care.

About Array Behavioral Care

Array Behavioral Care (formerly InSight + Regroup) is the leading and largest telepsychiatry service provider in the country with a mission to transform access to quality, timely behavioral health care. Array offers telepsychiatry solutions and services across the continuum of care from hospital to home with its OnDemand Care, Scheduled Care and AtHome Care divisions. For more than 20 years, Array has partnered with hundreds of hospitals and health systems, community healthcare organizations and payers of all sizes to expand access to care and improve outcomes for underserved individuals, facilities and communities. As an industry pioneer and established thought leader, Array has helped shape the field, define the standard of care and advocate for improved telepsychiatry-friendly regulations.
