Reliance On Extrinsic Incentives – New Study Finds That A Need For Praise Can Make People Apathetic

Incentives such as praise can be very effective, but should not be a person’s only source of motivation.

People who rely too much on rewards to keep them motivated will lose momentum as soon as that incentive is taken away.

External incentives such as praise, bonuses or perks can be powerful motivators for many people, but their positive effects are likely to be short-term.

A sincere “thank you,” pat on the back, or hearty thumbs up can do wonders for a person’s motivation – and doesn’t cost a dime, making it a win-win for employees and management alike. However, as with other external incentives, praise can be a doubled-edged sword, especially for people who desperately depend on it to keep them going or to boost their self-image. Research conducted by PsychTests indicates that when praise-addicted people don’t get their “fix,” they are more likely to become apathetic and easily discouraged.

Analyzing data collected from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, PsychTests’ researchers compared individuals who thrive on praise (“Praise-Cravers”) to those who don’t (“Praise-Abstainers”).

HERE’S WHERE THEY DIFFERED:

  • 52% of Praise-Cravers purposely set low expectations for themselves so that they are not disappointed when they fail, compared to 6% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • 43% said that they are fine with having “average” skills in any area, compared to 28% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • 28% would rather accept their weaknesses than put in the effort to work on them, compared to 12% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • If they are not good at something right away, 50% of Praise-Cravers would rather quit than waste time trying to improve, compared to 5% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • 71% of Praise-Cravers procrastinate when they need to do a task that is difficult or unpleasant, compared to 28% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • 57% struggle to work amidst distraction, compared to 15% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • 57% start projects or goals that they don’t finish, compared to 10% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • 59% are unable to motivate themselves and need a push from someone to get them going, compared to 7% of Praise-Abstainers.
  • 52% said that they often feel discouraged, compared to 7% of Praise-Abstainers.

IN CONTRAST:

  • 84% of Praise-Abstainers received a job performance rating of ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’, compared to 52% of Praise-Cravers.
  • Upon setting a goal or objective, 76% of Praise-Abstainers immediately take steps towards achieving it, compared to 59% of Praise-Cravers.
  • 62% of Praise-Abstainers have a five-year plan, compared to 51% of Praise-Cravers.
  • 88% of Praise-Abstainers aspire to become a better person, compared to 74% of Praise-Cravers.
  • 96% of Praise-Abstainers enjoy learning new things, compared to 83% of Praise-Cravers.
  • 90% of Praise-Abstainers make it a point to look for ways to improve their performance at school or work, compared to 68% of Praise-Cravers.
  • 51% of Praise-Abstainers take active steps to change any aspect of their lives that they are not satisfied with, compared to 13% of Praise-Cravers.

“Extrinsic motivators such as praise, bonuses or perks can be powerful incentives for many people, but their positive effects are likely to be short-term,” explains Dr. Ilona Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “This is particularly true if your job is stressful, your work environment is unpleasant, or you don’t enjoy what you do – in which case there is no amount of money or fringe benefits that will make your work day fun. Moreover, if external incentives are your only sources of motivation, then you’re in big trouble. Without intrinsic rewards such as a feeling of accomplishment, pride in a job well done, a sense of belonging, or the opportunity to grow personally and professionally, your motivation will lag. And as we have seen in our study, people who depend too much on outside incentives to keep them going almost always lose momentum and inspiration to work hard. Try to find a sense of meaning in your job. How are you making people’s lives better? What do you like about your colleagues, your work environment, or your work in general? What puts a smile on your face? How do you feel after a productive day? If you struggle to answer these questions or none of your responses make you happy, then it might be time to either work on your mindset or perhaps even consider seeking employment elsewhere.”

James Hendrickson’s new book “Addiction What It Was Like Conviction What Happened Redemption What It Is Like Now (A True Story)” is a raw look at addiction and recovery.

News Image

James Hendrickson, a devoted family man and retired counselor, has completed his new book “Addiction What It Was Like Conviction What Happened Redemption What It Is Like Now (A True Story)”: a potent tale of self-discovery and growth.

Dear reader: In this riveting true story, you will be amazed at the devastation, dysfunction, addiction, and finally, success in the life of the author! He has reinvented himself several times in his seventy-five years on this earth. Living his first four years in a city near Trenton, New Jersey, he moved to a small tenant house on a farm in New Egypt, New Jersey, where the dysfunction began. He lived there with his parents and siblings—always feeling poor, hungry, and abandoned! When he was ten years old, he began doing anything he wanted to do and became a juvenile delinquent.

His father passed away when he was twelve, and his mother moved the family to Bordentown, New Jersey, where he felt lost and alone. To ease the pain, he began drinking and hanging out with older teenagers because it made him feel older. He was restless most of the time and began to look for adventure in the wrong ways. Drinking was not an adventure anymore, but stealing cars was! Three court appearances later, he had to reinvent himself for the first time.

Now fifteen years old, it was time for another reinvention. He thought he would settle down and change his ways if he had a girlfriend. The first girlfriend didn’t work, and girlfriends became another addiction over a period of three years. Alcohol and women weren’t working either. The early dysfunction was still there!

The chaos went on for nine more years before the redemption started; all those in recovery know what the chaos is, but the author lets you know how it works after redemption.

Forty-eight years sober, with twenty-five as a licensed addiction counselor, his story will amaze you with hope and inspiration.

Published by Page Publishing, James Hendrickson’s autobiographical tale is one of ugly truths, loving forgiveness, and the drive to help others overcome their own struggles.

With a lifetime of experience on both sides of the process, Hendrickson offers an authentic voice to a painful topic.

Readers who wish to experience this inspiring work can purchase “Addiction What It Was Like Conviction What Happened Redemption What It Is Like Now (A True Story)” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

Confessions of a Bipolar Patient” is a deeply personal memoir of his challenging life

News Image

R.B. Le’Deach, a US military veteran, Harley Davidson enthusiast, and owner of three cats who has been happily married since 2003, has completed his new book “Personality Disorder Not Otherwise Specified: Confessions of a Bipolar Patient”: an eye-opening autobiographical reflection on his journey with a daunting diagnosis.

R. B. Le`Deach was born a Motown baby. He grew up in the Deep South in a large family of twelve. Some of them needed medication also. R. B. self-medicated with alcohol starting at the ripe young age of about twelve. R. B. had several issues at times but lived through them while he was at home with his parents. He left home at seventeen and joined the service for the next twenty-two years where his hyperactivity was a plus, but the drinking got worse and worse. Over the next forty years, he would become a professional drunk driver, able to fool anyone while moving from point A to point B. Home life, school life, love life, professional life, and married life all got covered, coming from the twisted mind of a bipolar individual. It wasn’t until five years after his exit from the service that he got on and stayed on his meds.

Published by Page Publishing, R.B. Le’Deach’s engrossing book is a thought-provoking reflection on his life, career, and family through the lens of his belated bipolar disorder diagnosis.

Readers who wish to experience this engaging work can purchase “Personality Disorder Not Otherwise Specified: Confessions of a Bipolar Patient” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

Prem Rawat Addresses Peace Education Meeting in Mexico as Partnerships Grow

Prem Rawat speaks at the Peace Education meeting in Mexico,

Prem Rawat met with supporters of the Peace Education Program in Mexico, where the wellbeing course is being embraced by diverse groups to reduce violence and cultivate hope.

A training should impart to you the potential that you already have. The Peace Education Program is about fulfilling your potential—knowing and understanding what it means to be alive.

Prem Rawat recently met with supporters of the Peace Education Program in Mexico, where the wellbeing course is being embraced by diverse people in family development organizations, correctional facilities, law enforcement and more.

The nonprofit that he started, The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF), makes the workshop series available across the world to help people discover their own inherent resources such as inner strength and personal peace. As in other countries, a growing number of institutions in Mexico are poised to integrate the program into their efforts to reduce violence and cultivate hope.

Total program participation rose in the last year to over 44,000 people in 50 countries, with many of the workshops offered on virtual platforms so that people could safely benefit despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The popularity of the program in Mexico has been growing exponentially and it recently garnered positive attention from several press outlets. The La Jornada Maya newspaper reported that “In the context of the pandemic, it has been a ‘balm’ to alleviate a little of the pain and uncertainty that we human beings suffer.”

About 40 attendees joined Prem Rawat to learn more about the Peace Education Program at the March 15 meeting in Cancun, Mexico, including representatives from the National System for Integral Family Development (DIF), the Quintana Roo Governor’s Office, the State Education System, the State Public Safety System, Technological University of Cancun, and other organizations. Many have expressed a keen interest in expanding the program to their constituencies.

The Peace Education Program workshops feature videos of Rawat’s addresses, as well as reflection time, participant discussions, workbook activities and reading materials, making them varied, fun and adaptable.

At the Peace Education meeting in Mexico, Prem Rawat explored some of the same themes that he does in the program workshops, delivering an empowering message about how to live a life of joy and appreciation even in the face of difficult circumstances.

“You judge your life by what you don’t have. You need to start judging your life by what you do have. And what you do have is the peace, the tranquility, the joy, the kindness that is all inside of you. There is a lit candle inside of each human being. And we suffer in darkness because we are not allowing that light to express itself in our lives,” he said. “A training should impart to you the potential that you already have. The Peace Education Program is about fulfilling your potential—knowing and understanding what it means to be alive.”

The event followed the release of recent studies that show remarkable benefits for Peace Education Program participants including enhanced anger management, tolerance and contentment.

The enthusiasm for the course in Mexico is mirrored across a range of countries in Latin America. For example, last year over 13,000 students participated in Colombian and Peruvian schools, buoyed by educators who want to prepare youth for positive life paths.

“During these challenging times, the collaboration and enthusiasm shown by representatives of groups and organizations in the Quintana Roo State of Mexico is particularly encouraging. We look forward to working together to respond to their requests to make this transformative course widely available,” says Peace Education Program Director Willow Baker.

Any individual or organization can apply to TPRF for a free license to offer the course to interested groups.

The Peace Education Program is just one of the ways that TPRF advances dignity, peace and prosperity by addressing fundamental human needs.

TPRF has provided more than $300,000 in funds for international COVID-19 relief projects in the last year. This winter TPRF also partnered with the World Central Kitchen to help people recover from devastating hurricanes in Central America.

Non-Profit Serving Those Serving Expands Access to Mental Health Resources to the Service Industry with New Relief Fund

Serving Those Serving

“We feel it is critical and even more important during COVID-19 to continue offering Serving Those Serving’s EAP services to our employees and to make sure they have the resources they need in order to get help.” – Luke Derheim, Creative Visionary at Craft & Crew Hospitality

Serving Those Serving (STS), a non-profit dedicated to the service industry, has announced the launch of a new relief fund to expand the availability of mental health resources to the hospitality workforce in response to COVID-19. As the service industry braces for continuing uncertainty, the new In the Weeds Foundation (ITWF) will grant immediate mental wellness resources to service industry applicants whose employers do not offer such benefits, who are displaced from employment, or are entering or exiting rehabilitation and/or incarceration. The goal of the fund is to increase access to wellness during an especially challenging time and reintroduce mentally healthy employees back into the workforce.

Through public funds and private donations, $10 will allow STS to sponsor short term, solution-based mental wellness services through their Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which has typically been only available through employers. Each grantee will have access to no-cost, high quality, bilingual, licensed professionals to forge a path towards wellness goals, including mental illness, alcohol/chemical dependency, work related stress, immigration and legal resources, amongst other issues. This program is a first-step response towards increasing access to wellness for the grantee, their domestic partners, and dependents.

“COVID-19 and social unrest have devastated the service industry — not only resulting in lost jobs, unpredictable working conditions, and fluctuating wages, but also an increase in anxiety, depression, workplace stress, and alcohol and substance abuse,” said Sarah Norton, STS Founder and Executive Director. “The In the Weeds Foundation aims to address these issues by expanding Serving Those Serving’s quality access to public and private mental and workplace wellness resources, which are more critical now than ever, to the broader service industry community. As the only independent provider of EAP services to the service industry nationwide, we’re dissolving the stigma and barriers around addressing mental health by providing much needed resources to an underserved workforce.”

STS is the only independent (non-union) organization providing in-house solutions to small restaurants and restaurant groups while also providing education, training, and continued leadership support. The organization has already saved lives and proven to be a valuable asset to both workers and restaurant owners. Even throughout the pandemic, STS retained 88 percent of its clients during COVID-19, including restaurants like Smack Shack, Black Sheep Pizza and Sweeney’s, and surpassed pre-COVID numbers by 25 percent. STS has nearly tripled the national average utilization rate of EAP services (~4.5% (Natl avg) ->~12% (STS) and has tripled the average utilization of males.

“At Craft & Crew, we’re 100 percent committed to the health and safety of our employees,” said Luke Derheim, Creative Visionary at Craft & Crew Hospitality. “That’s why we feel it is critical and even more important during COVID-19 to continue offering Serving Those Serving’s EAP services to our employees and to make sure they have the resources they need in order to get help.”

Applications are now being accepted for sponsorship from ITWF. For more information about Serving Those Serving and the In the Weeds Foundation, visit http://www.servingthoseserving.org.

Revolutionary Documentary Series “Mismatched” Explores Stress in Our Society and What We Can Do About It

Mismatched Documentary Series on Stress

Revolutionary Documentary Series “Mismatched” Explores Stress in Our Society and What We Can Do About It

Our brains can evolve, but not as fast as our world is changing. This creates a mismatch with our environment. To combat this we need to know how our brains can get hijacked, what tools we can use to become better aligned with the way stress affects our body and mind.

Stress is literally the spice of life. It has been said If you don’t experience stress you’re not alive. Stressors are everywhere. They come at you from the environment you live, work and play in, from other people and mostly, from inside your own mind. Stress is defined as our reactions to change. Like everything else, you can learn how to master your stress to live a more peaceful, productive and happy life. Mismatched: Your Brain Under Stress will tell you how.

The number of people feeling miserable has increased with increasing political and economic uncertainty, and the fear of new viral diseases. Global trends consistently show an increase in the number of people reporting negative emotions. Our minds and bodies are well adapted to short-term intense stress – the kind of stress that was in our environment for more than 200,000 years, and gave us a fighting chance when we were being chased by a saber toothed tiger. Stress turns on our fight or flight response to keep us safe from imminent threats. However rapid technological growth and other factors of modern life have changed our world beyond recognition without giving us an outlet to vent our stress. You can’t just fight the guy in the next cubicle because he is being a jerk. And so stress builds up to where it becomes chronic, and the primary forerunner of psychological disorders. Chronic stress is worse than ever. And chronic stress can destroy us.

Our brains can evolve, but not as fast as our world is changing. This creates a mismatch with our environment. To combat this we need to know how our brains can get hijacked, what tools we can use to become better aligned with the way stress affects our body and mind, and an understanding of how to recognize and move beyond kneejerk reactions to achieve our full potential.

Produced by The American Institute of Stress, Mismatched: Your Brain Under Stress is a 6 part documentary by Justin Smith featuring some of the world’s leading experts on stress. Their collective experience stretches from the first experiments done on the mind/body connection to the latest research into unravelling the unconscious mind. As entertaining as it is informative, Mismatched teaches us about what stress is and how to master it.
