Navy Nurse Creates Community Online and Care App Addressing Overcoming Depression, Suicidal Thoughts, and Resolving Conflicts

Mentally STRONG Founder

Dr. Bundukamara and her team of mental health professionals has created a scientifically proven method for overcoming some of life’s toughest challenges.

Our method helps people resolve conflicts, become empowered to take action, break through barriers, strengthen relationships, control emotions, overcome depression and overwhelm, and strengthen their mental stamina so that they may become less reliant on their therapist.

Psychiatric nurse practitioner, Dr. Cristi Bundukamara, is changing the landscape for mental health care by launching her own proprietary mobile app and online course programs featuring a unique care model, The Mentally STRONG Method, as the foundation. With May being Mental Health Awareness Month and June being PTSD Awareness Month, the launch of the Mentally STRONG online courses comes during a relevant time. Currently available for download on iOS and Android devices, the premium features of the mobile application are set to launch in June of 2021 which will include robust digital resources using The Mentally STRONG Method, a cognitive behavioral formula that can be used as a self-empowering program with the guidance of a professional.

“This is my passion. I truly believe we can all be Mentally STRONG and change the way we talk, educate and think about mental health,” said Dr. Bundukamara. “Our mobile app currently offers a community platform where people can enjoy free resources and connect with our online community right from their phone. Our June launch will feature added resources and serve as a virtual community where subscribers can go for help that will pair with our online courses, ‘Raising Mentally STRONG Kids’ and ‘STRONGer Together’. This will give people direct connections with professionals while providing a framework using The Mentally STRONG Method to help get control of mental wellness and become Mentally STRONG from the comfort of their home.”

With a rising increase in virtual wellness care, a vast majority of visits were for mental health reasons in the past year requiring a need for more virtual care solutions. With extensive experience treating mental health patients; including inpatient, outpatient, substance abuse and post trauma treatment throughout the lifespan, Dr. Bundukamara created The Mentally STRONG Method using a scientifically based Cognitive Behavioral Approach and Cognitive Restructuring Technique to help identify thoughts, feelings, actions, choices, and behaviors, and understand the impact they have on a person’s life. The Mentally STRONG Method helps people learn how to map their thoughts in relation to their story and past, resulting in a person having a more meaningful vision of themself.

“Our method helps people resolve conflicts, become empowered to take action, break through barriers, strengthen relationships, control emotions, overcome depression and overwhelm, and strengthen their mental stamina so that they may become less reliant on their therapist through strategic, formulated mental strengthening tactics,” said Dr. Bundukamara. Renowned Psychologist Releases NEW edition of her acclaimed book “WARRIOR” for Mental Health Awareness Month

Dr. Shauna Springer’s NEW Edition Release

“Doc Springer’s wisdom, both penetrating and insightful, has the power to save a life.” —Bill Edmonds, Special Forces officer and author of God Is Not Here

Due to the combined effects of a global pandemic, economic crisis, significant social justice issues, history-making wildfires, and a recent surge in mass violence events, people across America are now facing a level of emotional trauma that is familiar to many of our nation’s warfighters. During this mental health awareness month, at a pivotal point in our nation’s history, a new edition of the book WARRIOR by renowned psychologist Dr. Shauna Springer urges us to challenge our core assumptions about trauma and healing.

Hard Truths:

  • Many who die by suicide do not have (and have not ever had) a mental health diagnosis
  • Developing awareness by sharing sobering statistics about suicide may increase suicide risk
  • Lack of trust between treatment providers and many who suffer is a serious barrier to care

Mental Health Battles Are Not a “Veterans’ Issue” But an American Issue.

People across the nation are suffering in silence without the insights and support they need to stay in the fight. For too long, we have felt collectively helpless in the face of mental warfare and the loss of irreplaceable people due to suicide — within both our military and civilian circles. Dr. Shauna Springer’s WARRIOR is a seminal work that offers new insights and actionable solutions.

From a Trusted Doc to Our Nation’s Military Warfighters and First Responders Comes a Book That Touches, Changes, and Even Saves Lives.

Shauna ‘Doc’ Springer is a licensed psychologist, bestselling author, and keynote speaker, and is one of the world’s leading experts on psychological trauma, military transition, suicide prevention, and close relationships. She is a Harvard graduate and a senior advisor to several prominent organizations.

Since the start of the global pandemic, Doc Springer has participated in over 150 media engagements to share insights from her book WARRIOR. Her work has been featured in CNN, VICE, NPR, CBS Radio, Forbes, Business Insider, Military Times, Military.com, Gun Talk Radio, Coffee or Die Magazine, Hazard Ground, The HILL, HAVOK Journal, THRIVE GLOBAL, Police1, Anxiety.org, and Psychology Today. The WARRIOR EBOOK debuted on April 27, 2021, as the top new release in 9 Amazon categories, including “Clinical Psychology,” “Psychology of Suicide” “Military Families,” “Physician and patient healing,” and “War and Peace.”

WARRIOR can help us develop insights about how to heal from trauma and overcome universal human challenges. We have all been collectively traumatized. COVID-19 will have a long-term psychological impact. In addition, we’ve suffered political division, racially driven violence, wildfires, and surges in mass violence. Doc Springer, through the insights she offers in this remarkable book, equips us to get up and fight. WARRIOR is a book that calls to the warrior spirit in all of us, as we emerge from decades of war and a year of continual trauma.

The NEW paperback edition of Dr. Shauna Springer’s WARRIOR: How to Support Those Who Protect Us is now available at this link: https://lnkd.in/gK3Q8zg.

Short documentary Dear Georgina spotlighting life of Passamaquoddy elder streaming launch May 7

News Image

She was witness to a lot of things in her youth. So from that moment when the film premiered was good healing. To see herself on that screen was good medicine. Even though she isn’t with us today, it still means the world to know Dear Georgina is being shared and that she is still being heard.

Dear Georgina, a short documentary about Passamaquoddy elder Georgina Sappier-Richardson who was removed from her home and community in downeast Maine by child protection services at the age of 2, had streaming launch today in honor of Mental Health Awareness month. The film follows Georgina as she attempts to re-integrate herself into the community she barely knew. It can be streamed for free on Upstander Project at: upstanderproject.org/georgina.

Directed by award-winning filmmakers Adam Mazo and Ben Pender-Cudlip and produced by Upstander Project and producers N. Bruce Duthu and Tracy Rector, Dear Georgina is a follow-up to the Emmy® award-winning documentary, Dawnland (2018), in which Georgina told a portion of her harrowing story of surviving foster care.

“Mom had a special quality to her. She talked to and listened to anybody. Storytelling was always part of her healing,” said Dwight Parrett, Georgina’s son. “She was witness to a lot of things in her youth. So from that moment when the film first premiered at Camden [International Film Festival] was good healing. For her to see herself on that screen was good medicine. Even though she isn’t with us today, it still means the world to know that Dear Georgina is being shared widely and that she is still being heard.”

A series of community-focused preview screenings and panel discussions will lead up to the wide release of Dear Georgina including a special screening on April 28th with Portland Press Herald and the Abbe Museum. The screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Penobscot Nation Tribal Ambassador Maulian Dana and filmmaker and Upstander Project director Adam Mazo, moderated by Portland Press Herald Arts Reporter Bob Keyes.

“Georgina’s experiences and way of storytelling resonated so deeply with us. Our hope is that viewers will be inspired by Georgina to explore their own family history’s and hear stories from their elders. We have witnessed how Georgina’s healing process has encouraged others to share their stories and there is medicine and power in that experience for the storyteller and those listening. Our highest aspiration is that watching Dear Georgina prompts deep reflection and societal change to address the ongoing crisis of Indigenous child removal,” said film co-director and producer Adam Mazo.

A companion viewer’s guide to Dear Georgina was developed by Dr. Mishy Lesser to help educators and viewers understand how historical and intergenerational trauma impacts the emotional lives of children and young people. It also links Georgina’s story to the more recent separation of children from their families at international borders. “Some teachers recognize they don’t have the lived experiences of their students and need to understand what students and their families have survived. The film helps them do that,” says Lesser. According to Judi Freeman a high school history teacher in Boston, “What’s great about this film for educators is that it digs deep into … one woman’s story particularly when she is the age of many of my students. Everything about the film is centered on Georgina’s testimony and perspective. We hear her pain, we consider the ‘what ifs’ and we feel her humanity as she tries to reconcile her life experience and her identity.”

Dear Georgina had its world premiere in 2019 at the Camden International Film Festival with Georgina in attendance. Since then, the film has screened at over 20 film festivals around the globe.

Upstander Project films have won numerous awards including the 2019 National News & Documentary Emmy® Award for Outstanding Research for Dawnland. The films have been seen by millions on PBS’s Independent Lens, at international film festivals, conferences, and museums and the standards-aligned teaching guides are used in thousands of classrooms.

ABOUT DEAR GEORGINA — SYNOPSIS

In 1941 at age two Georgina Sappier-Richardson was removed from her home and Passamaquoddy community in downeast Maine by child protection services. She spent the next 16 years in 4 different foster homes. Terror and abuse followed, and she never saw her parents again. Georgina is just one of countless thousands of Indigenous children with similar stories.

DEAR GEORGINA follows this Passamaquoddy elder from Motahkomikuk as she tries to fill in the blurry outlines of her identity. Now a grandmother and summer visitor to her home community, Georgina attempts to re-integrate.

She remembers, “When I was 30 years old and I went back to the reservation this Indian lady told me, ‘You look exactly like your mother as a young person.’ So that made me feel special, made me feel real.”

But despite her gregarious personality and infectious laugh, she remains an outsider straddling two different worlds. This propels Georgina’s lifelong mission to find herself. At the end, Georgina travels to her foster community in northern Maine. Determined to reclaim some fragment of her lost childhood she makes an incredible discovery, but will it help heal decades old wounds?

Funding to Support Pet-Friendly Domestic Violence Shelters

PAWS Act Coalition

With the opening of the 2021 grant applications, we encourage domestic violence shelters around the country to apply for funding to become pet-friendly facilities.

The PAWS Act Coalition, a group of nonprofit and for-profit organizations committed to better protecting survivors of domestic violence by establishing, validating and promoting the criticality of protecting their pets, too, is informing the domestic violence shelter community of the recent announcement of the Fiscal Year 2021 U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Victims of Crime (OVC) Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelter and Housing Assistance Grant Program.

“With the opening of the 2021 grant applications, we encourage domestic violence shelters around the country to apply for funding to become pet-friendly facilities,” said Steven Feldman, President of HABRI.

FY 2021 grants will provide emergency and transitional shelter and housing assistance or short-term shelter and housing assistance for domestic violence victims with pets, service animals, emotional support animals, or horses. Grants awarded may also be used for programs that provide support services designed to enable someone fleeing an abuser to locate and secure safe housing with their pet, safe accommodations for their pet, or related services such as transportation and other assistance.

The $2.5 million appropriated for 2021 represents a $500,000 increase in funding following the success of the FY 2020 Emergency Transitional Pet Shelter Housing and Assistance Grant Program. The program awarded approximately $2 million to six organizations in six states to support transitional housing services for survivors of domestic violence and their companion animals. Grants have enabled shelters to expand housing and supportive service resources for domestic violence survivors, provide assistance including rent, pet deposits, and pet supplies to those seeking transitional housing with their pet, and more.

“The first round of the PAWS Act Grant Program funding in 2020 came at a critical time to aid survivors of domestic violence seeking safe shelter and healing with their pets across the nation,” said Nina Leigh Krueger, CEO and President of Nestlé Purina PetCare. “Purina is heartened to see the expansion of the PAWS Act Grant Program this year, which will further increase access to transitional and permanent housing for people and pets looking to heal together from domestic violence.”

The OVC anticipates making up to five awards of up to $500,000 each for a 36-month period of performance, to begin on October 1, 2021. The objectives are to increase the number of shelter beds and transitional housing options to meet the needs of victims of domestic violence who need shelter or housing for them and their companion animals. Grants awarded may also be used for programs that provide training on the link between domestic violence and the abuse and neglect of companion animals; the needs of victims of domestic violence; best practices for providing or referring support systems to such victims; and best practices in designing and delivering services that protect victims’ confidentiality.

The U.S. Department of Justice, through the Office of Justice Programs, Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), will accept applications for this grant program through June 29, 2021. The PAWS Act Coalition is working to share this funding opportunity as widely as possible so that organizations who are qualified are informed and can apply.

  • A pre-application webinar will be conducted on Thursday, May 20, 2021, from 1:00 to 2:00pm ET. Participation in the webinar is optional. OVC staff will review the solicitation requirements and conduct a question and answer session with interested potential applicants. To register for the webinar, please visit: https://ojp.webex.com/ojp/onstage/g.php?MTID=ef356e076a7daaf6bbad2710092f02594
  • In FY 2021, applications will be submitted to DOJ in a NEW two-step process.

For more information on how to apply, please visit: https://ovc.ojp.gov/funding/current-funding-opportunities/how-to-apply-for-funding

“The need for additional pet-friendly options for domestic violence survivors remains an under-addressed, critical issue facing our country. The continuation of the PAWS Act Grant Program funding is an important step to meet this need,” said Steven Feldman, President of the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). “HABRI is proud to be a member of the PAWS Act Coalition and to work alongside the greater pet care community in raising awareness for the PAWS Act Grant Program and its impact in helping protect human-animal bonds across the nation.”

Organizations in the PAWS Act coalition include:

  •     Purina (Nestlé Purina PetCare)
  •     Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI)
  •     Noah’s Animal House
  •     Pet Partners
  •     RedRover
  •     Urban Resource Institute (URI)

Two of these organizations, Noah’s Animal House and Urban Resource Institute, are part of the only 20% of domestic violence shelters across the country that actively offer co-shelter services to keep both pets and their owners away from the dangers of domestic abuse. Together these two incredible organizations have saved more than 2,300 pets from abusive conditions, so that no domestic violence survivor is forced to choose between staying in an abusive relationship and leaving their pet with their abuser.

“The Urban Resource Institute PALS Program (People and Animals Living Safely) has since 2013 been committed to client-centered services that allow survivors of domestic violence to find safe shelter and healing together with their companion animals,” said Nathaniel Fields, President and CEO of Urban Resource Institute. “The critical funding made available in the FY 2021 Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelter and Housing Assistance Grant Program will connect more facilities with resources to make it possible for individuals and their pets to heal together after the trauma of domestic violence.”

“Since 2007, Noah’s Animal House has cared for over 1,800 pets of domestic violence victims from 33 states across the U.S, in addition to our home state of Nevada. We know firsthand that domestic violence survivors will drive thousands of miles across state lines to be able to seek shelter with their beloved pets,” stated Staci Alonso, founder of Noah’s Animal House and Top Ten CNN Hero 2019. “With the second round of PAWS Act funding now available, survivors and their pets will have better access to more viable options to stay safe and thrive together.”

“Pet Partners is grateful to so many advocates around the country who made their voices heard during every step of the legislative process, emphasizing the importance of this legislation not only during the original passage of the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act as part of the 2018 Farm Bill, but for funding for this important grant program to continue,” said Annie Peters, CEO of Pet Partners. “Thanks to their actions, survivors of domestic violence will be able to stay together with their animal companions in a time when they need each other the most.”

“The RedRover + Purina Purple Leash Project has awarded 21 grants and additional funds totaling more than $375,000 to help equip domestic violence shelters to care for and shelter the animal victims of domestic violence. Our partnership has saved lives, and we know many shelters still do not have the means to house companion animals or provide veterinary care,” said Nicole Forsyth, RedRover President and CEO. “The continuation of the PAWS Act Grant Program made available by the Department of Justice will help meet this critical need and build on our efforts and expand the options available for domestic violence survivors with pets.”

Ace Industrial Supply Supports Local Community with PPE Donation to Homeboy Industries

News Image

We are grateful to Ace Industrial Supplies for this donation as it allows us to continue helping the most vulnerable communities

Ace Industrial Supply, a leader in industrial tool wholesale and distribution, has donated 400 medical gowns and 300 KN95 masks to the non-profit organization, Homeboy Industries. The donation will help serve the Homeboy Industries communities and reflects the mission of Ace Industrial Supply, supporting Los Angeles programs that help individuals back on their feet.

Ace Industrial Supply believes that as Los Angeles County adapts into the new normal, workers and institutions helping vulnerable populations must receive an abundance of the necessary PPE to provide superior care.

The high-quality gowns feature a closed-back, necktie closure, elastic cuffs, and knitted sleeve cuffs for optimal protection from dirt, grime, dust, minor splashes, and particulates. The KN95 masks offer 4-layers of defense by utilizing a non-woven inner layer, melt blown filters, hot air cotton air filters, and a non-woven outer shell. KN95 masks are designed to reduce skin irritation and ensure comfort even during hours of usage. Their lightweight profile makes them easy to store and carry. Most importantly, KN95 masks deliver greater protection than standard disposable 3-Ply masks.

“We hope that our donation will provide vital equipment to Homeboy Industries of Los Angeles and aid in the recovery process of the entire county,” says Ace Industrial Supply CEO, Holden Stearns. “Helping our local organizations who are proactively aiding those in need during these times is very important to us.”

Homeboy Industries is committed to rehabilitating former gang members by providing re-entry programs and therapeutic support. Every patient undergoes a strategically planned 18-month program which helps them recover from trauma and prepares them with the skills to be readily employed. Homeboy Industries is located in the City of Los Angeles making it convenient for the communities of Downtown Los Angeles, Glendale, Pasadena, Atwater, Eagle Rock and North Hollywood to receive assistance. In its last 35 years in business, Ace Industrial Supply has donated and supported the West Los Angeles area through various charitable contributions.

More Access Needed to Address the Teen Mental Health Crisis

Premier short term residential treatment for teen girls

Embark at the Poconos Gourmet Kitchen

“Our country needs more awareness, less stigma, and more access to high quality teen and young adult mental health services,” said Alex Stavros, CEO of Embark Behavioral Health.

Teen mental health is at peak crisis levels, with anxiety, depression, and suicide at all-time highs. The COVID pandemic and the subsequent isolation, lack of support systems, derailed routines, and stress have only made it worse. According to the CDC, mental health-related emergency department visits among children and teens under 18 increased 31% in 2020, compared with 2019. Teen suicide is now the second cause of death for teens in our country.

And the crisis in the Keystone State is no different. According to the latest Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS), 38% of teens indicated they felt anxious, depressed, or sad most days in the past 12 months.

“Our country needs more awareness, less stigma, and more access to high quality teen and young adult mental health services,” said Alex Stavros, CEO of Embark Behavioral Health. “When your teen’s emotions are running high, we encourage parents to be curious, practice active listening, paraphrase what they hear, avoid solving, and focus on connection before correction. Also, when it gets serious, please seek professional help,” Rob Gent, Embark Chief Clinical Officer, said.

Embark BH, a national network of therapy centers for adolescents and young adults, is on a mission to lead the way in reversing these negative mental health trends. With a 25-year legacy of treating teens, Embark recently announced the opening of its newest premier treatment program in White Haven, Pennsylvania. Located along the Lehigh River near the Pocono Mountains, Embark at the Poconos will offer short-term residential care for teen girls, ages 12-17, who may be struggling with anxiety or depression. The treatment program is insurance reimbursed and will serve Pennsylvania, the New York metropolitan area, and the broader East Coast region.

Short-term residential treatment at Embark provides a nurturing environment for stabilization, assessment, and healing. Clinicians implement a course of care and provide specialized treatment to prevent further problems from developing as the teen girls grow into young women. Treatment typically lasts between 45 and 90 days.

Helene Creasy, LCSW, Embark’s Regional Vice President, said this of the new location, “We are honored to give families additional access to the affordable, high-quality mental health services we’ve provided since Embark began treating teen girls and their families 25 years ago.”

The Embark at the Poconos residential program complements Embark at Main Line, a premier teen outpatient therapy center located in Berwyn, Pennsylvania.
