Spectrum.Life’s platform is now facilitating over 7,500 mental health and physical health consultations monthly, along with digital health and wellbeing livestreams which have attracted over 150,000 attendees since March 2020. “Measuring the clinical effectiveness of our interventions is critical to us in proving value to our clients and assessing the quality of our services,” says Dr. Sarah O’Neill, Chief Clinical Officer, Co-Founder and Chartered Psychologist at Spectrum.Life. She adds, “As an example we can see after using our mental health services, those experiencing severe psychological distress falls by 90% and those reporting as healthy rises by 20x. We’re now seeing record levels of utilisation of all of our services as service users seek support.”

We are looking forward to working with Stephen, Stuart, Sarah and the whole team to support their mission of improving mental health and wellbeing,” commented Debbie Rennick, General Partner with Act Venture Capital.

Youth Mental Health, An Echo Pandemic, Escalates Demand for Supportive Adults

While COVID-19 physically impacts some, it has impacted mental health on a much broader scale. A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study reported a 31% increase in the proportion of mental health–related emergency department visits for youth aged 12–17 years during 2020 as compared to 2019.

Stress-induced cognitive and physical impairments and toxic stress related to the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic has been prolonged and exaggerated. Another recent survey found that 64% of teens believe “the experience of COVID-19 will have a lasting impact on their generation’s mental health,” and 6 in 10 teens say their sources of support are harder to reach than normal.

Youth mental health issues have caused an echo pandemic of increased incidences of depression, anxiety, and suicide, escalating the demand for both therapists and other supportive adults who are mentally healthy themselves.

The science of early adversity proves that in the absence of protective relationships, toxic stress in childhood can change the architecture of the developing brain. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact everything–classroom behaviors, learning and comprehension, the ability to self-regulate–and can dramatically heighten the risk for future mental and physical health concerns.

Center for Child Counseling (CFCC) recently launched “A Way of Being with Children: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Building Resilience.” This online training for parents, teachers, childcare workers, or anyone who regularly interacts with children and families, along with a public health campaign, aim to build a more trauma-informed community so that children can grow up with adults who understand the impact of trauma and adversity and do not risk re-traumatizing children through their words or actions.

Being trauma-informed involves understanding, sensitivity, and a deep knowledge of how trauma can affect a child’s growing brain and potentially result in lifelong physical and mental health implications.

The 5.5 hour online course, accompanied by a spiral-bound manual with over 80 pages of practical advice and technique-building exercises, introduces a new way for adults to simply “be” around children–a better way that can help bring families closer together and make the time spent with children happier and more fulfilling. Based on decades of research into childhood brain development and the expertise of countless childcare workers and professional therapists, “A Way of Being” aims to create family and school relationships where children feel accepted and parents and teachers feel empowered.

Center for Child Counseling was founded in 1999 with the vision that every child will grow up feeling safe and nurtured in communities where they can thrive. CFFC’s work started in Palm Beach County, Florida, childcare centers, providing therapeutic support for young children experiencing adversity and trauma, while equipping their caregivers with effective practices for building social-emotional well-being and resilience.

The Center’s work has expanded beyond childcare centers to now working with children birth to age 18 in schools, the community, and the child welfare system. A primary goal is to help providers, educators, caregivers, and child-serving systems to shift their everyday ‘way of being’ with children, families, and communities who have experienced adversity and trauma from a “What’s wrong with you?” to a “What happened to you?” approach. Using a prevention and healing-centered lens, CFCC focuses on changing the systems and practices that keep adversity and trauma firmly in place.

For over two decades, CFCC has worked in partnership with families and communities, interacting with children in their most natural state of being: when they are at play. “A Way of Being” was developed based on this work and research over the last twenty years–grounded in science, guided by the voices of the families helped, and founded on best-practice principles using a trauma-informed, racial-equity lens.

In conjunction with the online training, the Center has also launched a public health campaign on social media–including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube–promoting this new way of being. The campaign aims to build awareness and education of the positive ways that adults can interact with the children in their lives to build lifelong resilience.

“The goal is for all community members to understand and own the idea that we each have a stake and role in child and family wellbeing. The need for adults to provide positive mental health support has significantly increased during COVID-19. Children have tremendous potential–which our society needs–and which we have a shared obligation to foster and protect,” said Reneé Layman, chief executive officer of Center for Child Counseling.

“A Way of Being with Children” online training and public health campaign has been made possible through the partnership and support of Florida Blue Foundation, Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County, and Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County. Grants from these funding partners make the training (live and online) available to childcare centers and public schools in Palm Beach County at no cost.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority’s Faith Partnership Initiative combats mental illness, addiction

Faith Partnership Initiative

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority’s Faith Partnership Initiative combats mental illness, addiction

“We understand the role faith-based organizations play in health promotion and disease prevention efforts. When we combine evidence-based treatment with faith, our region’s people gain a greater sense of purpose, belonging, and hope,” Dr. Sizer said.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority’s (NEDHSA) Faith Partnership Initiative engages faith-based communities to combat mental illness and addiction in northeast Louisiana. NEDHSA created partnerships with faith leaders and their congregations because they are uniquely positioned in society to help further NEDHSA’s efforts to stabilize traditional mental health services. Additionally, NEDHSA wants to educate, equip and provide resources to faith leaders to address substance abuse, prevention, support, and recovery needs in their congregations.

The Faith Partnership Initiative provides opportunities for faith leaders to learn how to address mental illness and substance abuse issues within their own families, congregations, and communities. NEDHSA launched a series of training sessions, conferences, and workshops to help faith leaders develop and sustain congregational ministry teams and provide them the tools to make it easy.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer said one single organization could not address the multitude of services needed when helping individuals affected by mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders.

“Government cannot solve complex societal problems alone,” Dr. Sizer said.” However, we understand the role faith-based organizations play in health promotion and disease prevention efforts. When we combine evidence-based treatment with faith, our region’s people gain a greater sense of purpose, belonging, and hope.”

Since its inception, NEDHSA has had a faith-based focus in its delivery of services through outreach and promotion. Through a partnership with Balance, Empowerment, Accountability, and Multiculturalism (BEAM, LLC), NEDHSA recruits houses of worship and conducts pre-health assessments, blood pressure, and wellness screenings, along with the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q).

In addition to the health and wellness initiatives, each participant is also pre-screened using the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for Substance Abuse Annual Questionnaire and the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Questionnaire for adults. These questionnaires are used to appropriately refer and offer assistance to the nearest NEDHSA health clinic.

Dr. Sizer said this is another extension of “our overall integrated care model.”

“We’re using these evidence-based practices as a way to strengthen our efforts toward reducing negative social determinants of health,” Dr. Sizer said.

NEDHSA also partnered with New Living Word Ministries (NLW) as an outreach hub to reduce and prevent HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, and C for out-of-treatment drug users. Through NLW, NEDHSA can provide harm reduction services to high-risk individuals in the community through education, hands-on referrals, linkages, and personal advocacy to access services and resources.

“Collaborating with local houses of worship allows us to connect these individuals with the resources and tools available to help them,” Dr. Sizer said. “It’s a natural longstanding social support system.”

Additionally, NEDHSA has partnered with the Louisiana Department of Health Office of Behavior Health to further execute its reach through Tonja Myles, a certified peer support specialist.

Myles said it takes a faith-based approach to substance abuse recovery, and she will assist NEDHSA with technical assistance and training to the faith community in northeast Louisiana.

Myles added that she’s been watching the work of NEDHSA for several years and is excited to partner with an agency that “wants to help all people.”

“I’m grateful to be a part of what Northeast Delta HSA is doing to serve this region,” Myles said. “I know first-hand how important faith is in any recovery, and this will allow us to take it to the next level.”

Taylor Reach Group to ensure compliance for statewide youth crisis line

“Of course, being a crisis line means the operation needs to be functioning optimally.” C. Taylor

The Taylor Reach Group, Inc. (TRG) has been enlisted to ensure compliance for a statewide youth crisis line.

The 24-hour crisis line caters to children that are a risk to themselves or others, having a mental health crisis.

“Of course, being a crisis line means the operation needs to be functioning optimally,” says Colin Taylor, CEO and Chief Chaos Officer at TRG. “Unfortunately, NGOs are often working within limited budgets and experience, and as a result may take steps that are suboptimal.”

The crisis center in question has faced such challenges. As a result, the operation has fallen short of state compliance requirements.

“TRG is a major advocate for youth and mental health,” Taylor says, “and it’s vitally important that these services be available without hesitation for those who need them most. That’s why this has been a top-priority project for us.”

TRG, an award-winning call and contact center consulting and managed services firm, will be performing a deep dive into all of the center’s processes, staffing, and technology in order to determine the precise gaps between current operations and state compliance. With this analysis in hand, the firm will be able to strategize and implement changes that will streamline and optimize the contact process, ensuring callers are able to get the help they need right away.

“Once the assessment process is complete,” Taylor says, “we’ll be able to quickly identify gaps between current operations and best practices, pinpoint ineffective technologies, and determine the most effective staffing for caller support. The organization already has a robust strategy for working with youth in crisis. Our role will be to ensure the call-in stage of the contact process is not an added hurdle for already vulnerable persons.”

Taylor Reach has helped major retail, publishing, education, and financial brands, as well as not-for-profits, and government agencies at all levels, provide world-class consumer support and customer experience through its holistic approach involving the moving parts of the customer experience journey: people, processes, technology, and methodology.
