Health Connect America Expands its Electronic Recycling Solutions to Provide Employment for Adults with Autism and Other Disabilities

Health Connect America (HCA), a provider of mental and behavioral health services, today announced the expansion of Electronics Recycling Solutions (ERS). ERS is designed to provide employment for adults who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other disabilities through an ethical solution to electronics waste management.

The expansion has already created ten new jobs for adults with disabilities with plans to continue increasing the number of hires as they launch more locations across Tennessee in Franklin, Johnson City, and Chattanooga.

“We are really proud of our employees at ERS. Through this expansion and upcoming expansions, we are going to be able to employ many more adults with disabilities,” said Dave Krikac, vice president of operations at Health Connect America. “One in five Americans have a diagnosed disability and fewer than 20 percent are employed, so this is very exciting for the state of Tennessee.”

“We love to ensure our clients learn everyday life skills but more importantly live their best lives,” said Kristi Shain, chief executive officer at Health Connect America. “Our mission is to create greater independence for adults with disabilities and to provide them a safe space to achieve their highest level of potential. In addition to providing job opportunities, our team is working hard to keep electronics out of landfills. More than 50 million tons of electronics need recycling annually and our efforts are making an impact.”

Health Connect America has most recently partnered with Athens Distributing Company for the ERS program. Athens Distributing Company recently donated more than 60 iPads and has previously donated computer equipment from across Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville.

“We see the tremendous value of the ERS program for both the community and the environment through recycling computers responsibly and employing this underemployed population,” said Don White, partner and chief financial officer at Athens Distributing Company. “The fact that ERS offers certificates of destruction for sensitive data on hard drives is also a big business benefit to us.”

Electronics Recycling Solutions is accepting recycled computers, servers, laptops, cell phones, and more. Visit https://www.electronicsrecyclingsolutions.org/ for drop off locations and more information.

American Psychology Association PsycNet Confirms Huge Benefits for Patients in Integrated Healthcare Using Measurement Based Care

American Psychology Association PsycNet Confirms PCOMS patients dropped out 30% less, attended 22% more sessions, and 43% more PCOMS patients achieved clinically significant change.

Great news for patients receiving treatment in integrated healthcare, where behavioral health and medical providers work collaboratively to address patient needs. The first study of measurement base care (MBC), the monitoring of patient benefit using standardized measures to adjust treatment as needed, has demonstrated dramatically better results with patients reporting mental health concerns, as confirmed by American Psychology Association PsycNet.

Using the Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS), a widely researched MBC intervention and its web application, Better Outcomes Now, PCOMS was evaluated in three integrated Federally Qualified Health Care Centers in Colorado. The study conducted by Drs. Barry Duncan, Jeff Reese, and colleagues, published in Families, Systems, & Health reported:

  • Double overall outcomes with PCOMS patients.
  • PCOMS patients dropped out 30% less and attended 22% more sessions.
  • 43% more PCOMS patients achieved clinically significant change.

Because its measures are brief, PCOMS is well-suited for the workflow demands of integrated care and aligns with the Institute of Healthcare’s Triple Aim of improving outcomes, decreasing costs, and enhancing patient experience.

Invincible Entertainment Set to Release New Film “Hell or High Seas”

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, another epidemic is raging—the high suicide rates among veterans. But independent distributor Invincible Entertainment is attempting to raise awareness of this problem through an epic film, Hell or High Seas.

A new report by Boston University reveals that military suicides are four times higher than deaths in war operations. The report estimates that 30,177 active duty personnel and veterans of post 9/11 wars have died by suicide compared to the 7,057 service members killed in post 9/11 war operations. The report cites several factors that have influenced this high rate of suicide, such as difficulty reintegrating into civilian life, high exposure to trauma, and stress.

Hell or High Seas is a true story of a Navy Vet’s struggle with PTSD after re-entering civilian life, and his quest to sail around Cape Horn to calm the storms within. The film follows former Navy rescue swimmer Taylor Grieger and writer Stephen O’Shea on the adventure of a lifetime. As the two sail the world’s most treacherous ocean waters to raise awareness about veteran suicide, Grieger finds healing from his own painful journey with PTSD.

From director Glenn Holsten, producer Chayne Gregg and executive producer, TV Personality and Founder of the Robert Irvine Foundation, Robert Irvine, Hell or High Seas presents a gripping emotional and physical journey. Grieger and O’Shea were able to capture hundreds of hours of footage over months at sea, including the team’s battle with Hurricane Harvey. This footage was combined with other key footage and interviews shot by Holsten with director of photography John Pope. Working with a team of post-production professionals, Holsten and Gregg have crafted an adventure film with an important message that feels both organic and highly polished.

Commenting on the upcoming launch of the film, Irvine said: “Taylor Grieger’s story is an honorable one, and I hope eye opening for all who watch Hell or High Seas. Through the Robert Irvine Foundation, I’ve dedicated much of my life to raising awareness around the sacrifices that active and retired military members have made on behalf of this great country. To be a part of showcasing this incredible story is an absolute privilege. I am immensely grateful to Taylor for sharing his journey with us.”

Like so many other veterans, Grieger was diagnosed with complex PTSD after his discharge from the military. Sadly, he was given little-to-no guidance on how to cope with his condition, and suffered in silence. At his lowest point, he tried to take his life. Thankfully the universe had other plans and a failed suicide attempt sparked a life-changing mission: conquer Cape Horn to raise awareness about the veteran suicide epidemic, and help pave a smoother path for veterans returning to civilian life.

Hell or High Seas sheds light on a subject that is often considered taboo; however, Grieger is changing the tide through his bravery and honesty in sharing his struggles and charting a path to overcome them. When asked to share his motivation for documenting his experiences of living with PTSD, he explained: “Stephen and I decided to document this because too many of my buddies were leaving the military and killing themselves shortly after. We thought that maybe if we let as many veterans as we could know that they weren’t alone in this fight, that with time your mind can heal, we might be able to turn the tide in the veteran suicide epidemic. We also figured we couldn’t just film ourselves sitting in a room talking about these things, we’d have to do something big and bad enough to grab people’s attention. Hence using this planet’s deadliest waters as the backdrop for our mission, Cape Horn.”

Through this gruelling expedition, Grieger found healing in what could be described as an adventure of therapy. His dream is to get a boat big enough to start running expeditions for vets battling the same issue. He said: “If I could get those guys on the water and show them what it’s like to just be in glass water and a purple sunset, I think it’d give them a different perspective. It gave me a different perspective.”

Founder and CEO of Invincible Entertainment Thomas Ashley is excited about the upcoming launch of the film. Ashley states, “Hell or High Seas is Invincible’s first post COVID theatrical release and we could not think of a better cause to bring people together for. We are truly inspired by the message of hope this film portrays and we know that message will resonate with audiences everywhere.”

Through a series of pre-screenings, Hell or High Seas has already sparked a fresh debate on veteran suicides and what can be done to prevent them. One previewer who saw the film was inspired to contribute to the change. He said: “Most eye-opening documentary I’ve ever seen. Truly amazing what these guys have accomplished and are doing for our veterans. I will definitely join the fight and help raise awareness for this physical and mental struggle that nobody should have to go through alone. One team one fight!”

Set to premiere in theaters on October 8th, Hell or High Seas’ debut follows September’s Suicide Prevention and Awareness month. For further information or to watch a trailer of the film, visit: https://www.invincibleent.com/hell-or-high-seas.

Ideal Option Opens Addiction Medicine Clinic in Marysville, WA

Ideal Option, a national leader in evidence-based treatment for addiction to substances such as fentanyl, heroin, illicit opioids, alcohol, and methamphetamine has opened its newest clinic at 1617 Grove St., Marysville, WA 98270.

Snohomish County experienced 232 drug overdose deaths in 2020, the most recorded in history and a 46% increase from 2019, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner. According to a recent briefing, the Snohomish Health District believes fentanyl is to blame for the dramatic increase.

Fentanyl, a highly addictive and potent synthetic opioid that is plentiful and cheap compared to other opioids like heroin, is currently driving the overdose crisis. According to the CDC, while overdose deaths overall increased by 38% in WA state from 2019 – 2020, overdose deaths due to synthetic opioids increased by 101%.

The upward trend of fentanyl use in Washington State is continuing in 2021. According to the Washington State Department of Health, “preliminary data show 418 overdose deaths in the first three months of 2021 compared to 378 overdose deaths in the first three months of 2020. Of the 418 overdose deaths in 2021, 46% (191) of these deaths are linked to fentanyl.”

“Our lab data also shows a staggering increase in fentanyl use among enrolling patients this year,” said Dr. Brian Dawson, chief medical officer at Ideal Option. “Among our Washington State Medicaid patients, nearly 50% tested positive for fentanyl at enrollment in July 2021 – a 71% increase over July 2020.”

In response to this data, Ideal Option has implemented new treatment and support protocols to help patients through the difficult transition phase from fentanyl to buprenorphine. More information on these protocols was shared in a recent webinar presentation with Dr. Dawson, the recording of which can be found at http://www.idealoption.com/events.

The new Ideal Option clinic in Marysville is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is located at 1617 Grove St., Marysville, WA 98270.

Most forms of insurance are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid, and patients can typically get started on treatment for fentanyl, heroin, alcohol or other substances within 1-3 business days.
