“Our longstanding relationship with ULM and the timing of this great work make this a perfect opportunity for two of the region’s leading organizations to help our most vulnerable populations,” Dr. Sizer said.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) has sponsored the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) Art Program’s mental health mural as part of its Rise Above Stigma initiative the agency launched in July 2021.

The ULM Honors Art Class and the Art & Entrepreneurship Class designed and created a public art project to inspire ULM students to seek help, destigmatize seeking help, and provide solutions to help overcome mental health issues. The message within the mural supports NEDHSA’s Rise Above Stigma initiative, which aims to help increase access to behavioral health support services, provide mental health awareness, and other culturally and linguistically appropriate stigma reduction messaging and training for the twelve parish communities in northeast Louisiana.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer said the sponsorship of the mural further pushes the work NEDHSA has already started and will be continuing.

“Our longstanding relationship with ULM and the timing of this great work make this a perfect opportunity for two of the region’s leading organizations to help our most vulnerable populations,” Dr. Sizer said.

“The messaging found in the mural helps us further identify and break individual, family, and community stigma operating in our region.”

Dr. Sizer said that as NEDHSA works to identify the origins of stigma, “we will begin to find the solutions to what is causing it, such as structural inequalities, housing, transportation, education, and others.”

“There are many contributing factors as to why individuals carry various stigmas,” Dr. Sizer said. We are committed to identifying the internal and external issues and then working with communities to help mitigate them.”

The Mental Health Mural will be located at the intersection of University Avenue and Northeast Drive on ULM’s campus and will span 50 feet with a height of five feet. ULM’s art students designed the mural to interpret mental health by identifying loneliness, stress, academic pressure, body image, depression, and more.

ULM Art Professor Brooke Foy said this project has been the “most beautiful collaboration between two very different groups of students.”

“Our mission is to speak to the students, our community and to encourage more discussion around mental health,” Foy said. “These students did an amazing job telling so many stories on one mural.”

ULM Senior Ruby Taylor, an art major, said the mural project was an “opportunity for strangers to team up and tackle an important subject that we know too well, regardless of our studies or majors.”

“This artwork creates a space that allows anyone to engage and discuss in the conversation about mental health awareness,” Taylor said.

NEDHSA’s Rise Above Stigma initiative includes targeted training and use of community engagement practices with grassroots community-based organizations, area churches, businesses, and stakeholders within all twelve parishes of northeast Louisiana.

NEDHSA will take the art mural beyond the campus and collaborate with the region’s museums, schools, and others to share the art as a touring anti-stigma exhibit.

Women Shift Focus to Self-Care, Family, and Nurturing Relationships in New 2022 Predictions Survey

SheSpeaks, one of the largest online communities of female consumers and influencers with over 250,000 members, has released the results of its newest female-focused predictions for 2022. The forecasts on health, career, economic outlook, and stance on the pandemic were formulated with data findings from the trusted online community platform.

“I am so passionate about this female insight data, as it represents 51% of purchasing decisions in the United States. Brands need to really think about this information as they finalize both their 2021 end of year sales strategies, while also looking ahead to 2022 first quarter sales. These insights are critical to their success,” says Aliza Freud, CEO and Founder of She Speaks.

The Growing Desire for Connection

Strengthening relationships with family and friends seems to be the most sought-after accomplishment for women in the upcoming year. Up 8% from last year, 61% of women hope to spend more time with family & friends. In relation, 43% of women will be working on their current relationship with their significant others in 2022. In addition to building with current partners, women’s desire to expand their families by pregnancy or adoption has grown 11% since 2020. For singles, the desire for connection in the form of a new love interest has also increased by 9% from 2020.

The Pandemic Has Caused Trauma and Ongoing Anxiety

In 2019, 60% of the SheSpeaks New Year survey respondents felt excited and optimistic entering 2020. After a year plus of economic hardship, job loss, and pandemic trauma, the optimism seems to have faded with a consecutive 16% drop in anticipation for the new year in 2020 and 2021. Continuing with the pandemic outlook, most women (51%) express uncertainty in how much longer the COVID-19 pandemic will last. The feeling of uncertainty involving the pandemic is up a staggering 31% the past year. With no clear end in sight, 52% of respondents have reported receiving the COVID-19 booster shot or are planning to receive the booster vaccination.

Self Care and Progression will be the Theme of 2022

With improving fitness, optimizing organization, and doing more for well-being, self-care will remain a common goal amongst women. In 2022, 61% of women will be placing their energy into building strength and improving fitness. Organization of the home and increasing travel have the most significant year-over-year difference in this category with both up 5% (Organizing home 60%, traveling more 52%). Many women (51%) have also reported the desire to learn a new skill either through reading, listening to podcasts, or joining a class.

New Study to Investigate Impact of Pet Ownership in Relationships with Intimate Partner Violence

News Image

“Quantifying the link between intimate partner violence and animal cruelty will help identify ways to protect people and pets and lower the barriers to seeking help.”

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) announced today a new research grant to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) School of Public Health to investigate how pet ownership and cruelty to animals impact the decisions and mental health outcomes of survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV).

“Pet abuse has been identified as a predictor of IPV, but there is a lack of data to fully understand the role of pet ownership in relationships where IPV is occurring,” said Alaina Beauchamp, MPH, Principal Investigator. “Quantifying the link between intimate partner violence and animal cruelty will help identify ways to protect people and pets and lower the barriers to seeking help.”

One in 4 women and 1 in 9 men reported IPV in 2019 alone. 41 percent of men arrested for IPV reported committing acts of animal cruelty, compared to a nationally representative sample of adult men who reported a 2 percent incidence of animal cruelty. Up to 48 percent of domestic violence victims remain in abusive situations out of fear for their pet’s safety, and only 15 percent of U.S. domestic violence shelters are pet friendly.

This new research study led by Alaina Beauchamp, a doctoral student, and Katelyn Jetelina, PhD, assistant professor at UTHealth School of Public Health, will collect data from women residing in emergency and transitional housing at a domestic violence shelter in the southern United States to examine their experiences of animal cruelty and the barriers it created when seeking help. Data will be used to capture the burden of animal cruelty in this population, assess the role emotional manipulation by an abuser plays in choices made for an IPV survivor and their pet, and evaluate the impact of the human-animal bond on the resiliency and mental health of these IPV survivors.

“HABRI is proud to be funding this important research, which will bring data to a critical issue facing survivors of IPV and their pets,” said Steven Feldman, President, HABRI. “HABRI is committed to supporting efforts that help pets and people stay healthy and safe together.”

Research scientist and best selling author offers simple strategies to avoid mental health crisis

Grow Your Mind Grow Your Life

“You can heal your pains and unlock your best life one moment of pause at a time, one word of wisdom at a time, and one drop of focus at a time,” says Dr. Narjes.

“Dr Narjes Gorjizadeh is one of LivingNow Magazine’s favourite authors. Her articles for us offer valuable insights; and, likewise, this helpful book delivers useful tools for readers to upgrade their lives!”

—Emma Stephens, LivingNow Magazine Editor

PhD research scientist, life coach, and author, Dr. Narjes Gorjizadeh, bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science in this recently published book to provide a unique new model for a happy and fulfilling life.

In GROW YOUR MIND, GROW YOUR LIFE: 7 Simple Strategies to Increase Focus, Heal Your Pain, and Unlock Your Best Life (Marble Book Publishers; paperback), Dr. Narjes provides the practical wisdom to expand our minds and simple, quick, science-based tools to live a happy, stress-free, and fulfilled lives.

Having explored both modern science and ancient wisdom for the past three decades, Dr. Narjes used this knowledge to find the easy way out during her own turbulent times. In doing so, she learned a life changing truth: our mind is the root of our life experiences.

By integrating modern science and ancient wisdom, she developed her brilliant ‘hybrid’ approach to effectively alleviate stress and anxiety, improving productivity, happiness and inner peace.

How we perceive situations in our life and how we respond to them depends on how our mind works, she says. Whether it is the stress of navigating our way through the routine stresses and overstimulation of modern daily life or unexpected crises and challenges, we can cope better if we know how to manage our mind.

This is especially relevant today as the COVID 19 pandemic exacerbates psychological distress. Mental health is predicted by American Psychological Association (APA) to be “a second pandemic – one that would persist even after the physical threat of the virus has been addressed.”

In GROW YOUR MIND, GROW YOUR LIFE, Dr. Narjes explains how by increasing the focus of the mind the reader can change their brain to become happier, more productive, and more creative, regardless of life’s outcomes and events.

In Part One, Dr. Narjes explores the three pillars – Pause, Wisdom, Focus – that empower the readers to become more in control of their mind, thoughts, and emotions, to help them remain stable and strong in all life situations. “You can heal your pains and unlock your best life one moment of pause at a time, one word of wisdom at a time, and one drop of focus at a time,” says Dr. Narjes.

Part Two of GROW YOUR MIND, GROW YOUR LIFE offers seven easy, quick, and practical tools to increase your focus, manage your mind, enjoy the gift of the present moment, and unleash your potential to unlock your best life. Techniques include:

  • How to refine your limiting beliefs
  • How to use the distractions of modern life to your advantage
  • How to use your power of choice
  • How to strengthen your mind to become more positive
  • How to design your best future

This easy to read book provides step-by-step instructions and examples of its strategies in action, enabling techniques to be easily integrated into daily life to transition from stress to peace, and from tension to relaxation.

GROW YOUR MIND, GROW YOUR LIFE is available in online bookstores both in print and ebook editions. For more information about this book, please visit http://www.drnarjes.com

As High School Seniors Finalize College Applications, the National Conscience Month Essay Contest Offers a $2,000 Scholarship

Scholarship for High School Seniors

“Teenagers have the capacity to tap into their unlimited wisdom and creativity through their Conscience–building self-confidence and response-ability as they prepare to leave home for the first time and share their light with the world.” — Leonard Perlmutter, educator, author, yoga scientist

As many high school seniors complete their college application essays, the American Meditation Institute invites them to think more deeply and submit an essay to the 3rd annual National Conscience Month Essay Contest. This year one high school senior will receive a $2,000 scholarship toward higher education for the best essay that clearly explains how they experimented with using (or ignoring) the wisdom of their brilliant conscience in their decision-making process.

When faced with the prospect of leaving home to go to college, learning a trade, taking a gap year, or going straight to work, high school graduates need confidence and skills to enter young adulthood. The capacity for self-reliance is not found in the relentless onslaught of information from mobile devices, cable outlets, emails, and social media feeds. Today’s students, and the rest of society, have not been taught how to manage their thoughts in this frenetic environment.

According to Leonard Perlmutter, originator of National Conscience Month and author of the new book, YOUR CONSCIENCE, “At present there is no educational curriculum focused on teaching students exactly how the mind makes a decision, every time, and how to use the Conscience as a practical resource in this process. This national essay contest for teenagers at a critical moment in their personal development, will establish an awareness of the positive value of regularly using their Conscience as a trusted guide to knowing what’s to be done and what’s not to be done.”

Perlmutter’s book, YOUR CONSCIENCE, provides a clear and accessible explanation of how the mind works and offers practical tools for readers to experiment with this knowledge. The Conscience is one of four functions of the mind, and the key is learning how to coordinate them as a group in order to make choices that lead to lasting happiness and fulfillment, rather than instant gratification. The book can easily be adapted into educational curricula at the middle and high school levels, and beyond.

High school seniors can enter the scholarship contest now, and submissions are accepted through January 28, 2022. The contest winner will be announced the first week in February, 2022.

The mission of National Conscience Month is to foster a national conversation that inspires individuals of all ages and political affiliations, governments, school systems, faith leaders, non-profits, community organizations, corporations, believers, atheists and agnostics across the United States and the world community to experiment with using their Conscience in choosing their thoughts, words and deeds. This month-long observance is the perfect time to clarify our individual and collective vision by using the Conscience as an inspired and trustworthy guide to making better decisions that can resolve the seemingly unresolvable.
