Sing to Say uses Music to Teach Language to Children with Autism

Children with autism can often sing what they cannot say. We are building a vocabulary and music is the teacher!

Today Sing to Say launched its brand new app, Sing to Say Foundations on Android and Amazon. Building on the success of the original Sing to Say for iOS, this new version was created specifically for android tablet users.

By using short, simple songs and entertaining animations, Sing to Say Foundations teaches the meaning of words in a playful, easy-to-understand manner. We use music to build vocabulary and provide a path for expressive language for children with autism.

The app includes a wide variety of themed word “packs” such as the Personal Care Pack or the Family Pack, each containing songs related to that theme. Foundations also offers the opportunity to check for retention and learning.

Through our research with the Berklee College of Music and consultation with parents, educators and therapists, we learned that music activates parts of the brain different from the spoken language centers, which is very helpful in teaching language and fostering communication.

“We know that children with autism can often sing what they cannot say,” says co-founder Neil Smolar. “We created specialized songs to bridge to the language centers.”

If you’re interested in learning more about Sing to Say Foundations, please visit singtosayfoundations.com, We’re also on Instagram and Facebook. We’d love to hear from you!

The Sing to Say Foundations app is available on Android and Amazon.

Pandemic-Fueled Mental Health Crisis Continues Burdening Couples, Marriages & Families

Maryland divorce attorney Brandon Bernstein

The pandemic has unfortunately further complicated many divorce proceedings, with residences now serving as online learning centers for children and home offices, all wrapped into one.

One of the many lasting consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic will be the way it’s impacted the mental health and well being of individuals and families. A survey of 1,320 therapists released by The New York Times labeled this a burgeoning mental health crisis, and it’s one that Maryland family law attorney Brandon Bernstein of The Law Offices of Brandon Bernstein has seen firsthand as it relates to negative impacts on marriages.

“The most common stresses on otherwise normal marriages, such as family planning and the parenting of children, monetary concerns, and overall effective communication have all been severely increased for the majority of Americans due to Covid-19, and it’s something I see on an everyday basis in my office,” says Maryland divorce attorney Brandon Bernstein, a member of Super Lawyers since 2014.

“The past two years haven’t been ‘normal’ or easy for most people, and what we’re seeing is an increase in both separations and divorces,” Bernstein continues. “The pandemic has unfortunately also further complicated many divorce proceedings, with residences now serving as online learning centers for children and home offices, all wrapped into one.”

According to published survey, nine in ten therapists say more clients are seeking care, across both blue and red states, and six in ten said patients are seeking more medication, including antidepressants or anti-anxiety pills. When individuals are challenged in this way, the same challenges become shared burdens for couples and families, and problems often begin compounding.

Couples end up arguing more due to isolation, financial concerns, and employment stress, while juggling the added responsibilities of online learning while working from home. These issues create added communication difficulties, as well as challenges in the division of household chores, not to mention the use of household space, time, and technology. Children are burdened by the difficulties of online learning and the other stress factors of homeschooling, as well as the reduced opportunity to socialize with friends and participate in extracurricular activities.

If there is a silver lining, more individuals are seeking out therapy and other forms of assistance, and there is less stigma involved with doing so. The increased availability of tele-medicine has offered increased access to certain segments of the population. The individuals seeking help for themselves may also be interested in pursuing a less aggressive course of action when it comes to their marriage via Maryland divorce mediation as well.

The Law Offices of Brandon Bernstein handles all aspects of family law cases in the state of Maryland, and is well acquainted with the ongoing landscape of divorce during the pandemic, along with the new challenges and wrinkles it presents. The office is currently meeting with clients virtually for their safety and convenience. More information is available at BrandonBernsteinLaw.com or by calling 240.395.1418.

How Becoming a Corporate Sponsor Can Help a Hero in Need

Photo courtesy of Paws of War

We work with numerous corporate partners as they help give back to those who have given so much, explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. We are grateful for every corporate sponsor we have because they help to make our programs possible.

Many military members who come home from deployment are in need of support. Whether it’s needing a service pet, obtaining food for themselves or their pets, or needing help putting up a fence on their property, many need support from the community. Companies that want to give back can do so by partnering with Paws of War, which helps veterans meet a variety of their needs. The challenges of the last two years both home and abroad have hit deployed troops, veterans and first responders particularly hard. Troops returning home are facing significant challenges finding housing, buying cars and adjusting to mask mandates and lockdowns. The frontline first responders have faced a never ending onslaught of patients and crises. Paws of War continues to make a significant impact on our hero’s lives by providing them with the support they so desperately need by offering a wide range of services aimed to help make their lives better!

“We work with numerous corporate partners as they help give back to those who have given so much,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “We are grateful for every corporate sponsor we have because they help to make our programs possible.”

Increasingly, consumers are looking beyond just logos to decide who to do business with. According to the Harvard Business School, corporate social responsibility has become a more important issue. They report that 70% of Americans believe it’s important for companies to make the world a better place, and 77% of people are motivated to buy from a company that does help make the world a better place.

By partnering with Paws of War, corporations can take pride in knowing that they are helping to keep the country stronger and that they are caring for those who have served. The partnership helps cover the cost of such programs as rescuing soldiers’ dogs from overseas, providing mobile veterinary care for veterans’ pets, providing free trained service dogs, and providing dog obedience and care support for veterans’ pets.

While charities gain financial assistance from corporate sponsors, it’s really a win-win relationship. Here are some of the things that companies gain in return:

  • The satisfaction of knowing they are helping an organization with its mission. Those who partner with Paws of War feel a sense of pride in helping the country’s veterans.
  • Their image is strengthened by showing people they care about the issues they are putting their partnership behind.
  • Increased visibility for their company, because the partnership is shared through the organizations marketing and public relations efforts.
  • They can widen their audience and potentially reach new customers. Sponsorships give the company a way to introduce themselves to people, doing so through an organization they already trust.
  • A place where the company’s employees can get involved, giving back to the community.

Paws of War has successful partnerships with numerous companies, including Express Scripts, Subaru, D’Arrigo New York, Mac Abstract, and the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. It has also partnered with sports teams, such as the Buffalo Bills, New York Yankees, New York Giants, and New York Red Bulls.

Corporate sponsors can take pride in helping to give back to veterans, but they will also get cross-promotional marketing opportunities. They can provide sponsorship of the organization, one program within it, a specific event, etc. They can also opt for employee engagement.

“Our corporate sponsors are able to help support our mission in a variety of ways,” added Misseri. “We are happy to work with them. Their partnership enriches the community. We help at both ends of the leash.”

Paws of War has helped veterans with numerous issues, including suicide, service and support dogs, companion cats and dogs, food insecurity, veterinary care, and animal rescue for deployed military. As the demand for Paws of War’s services was growing, traditional fundraisers like galas and golf outings were sidelined, putting a crimp in the needed funding to keep these services going. Paws of War has a large loyal following of supporters, and looks forward to working with new corporate sponsors to keep these life saving programs running, and to get our family to show its support to our corporate donors.

Paws of War is currently seeking additional corporate sponsors. To get more information about the organization or to become a sponsor, visit the site at: https://pawsofwar.org/.

About Paws of War

HMP Global Launches Digital Mental Health Education Initiative

News Image

HMP Global, the leading healthcare event and education company, today announced the launch of a sweeping education initiative for mental health clinicians. The Digital Mental Health 360 (DMH360) Education Initiative marks an important step in advancing the field of mental healthcare and improving efficiencies in the treatment of mental health disorders.

Components of the initiative include educational programming, as well as a dedicated online microsite that features an array of educational tools and content – news, expert interviews, presentations, podcasts, and interactive exchange.

The emerging field of Digital Mental Health incorporates both software and hardware – sometimes with drugs or devices – to prevent, manage, or treat mental health disorders. Clinician and stakeholder awareness of these tools is low and often confused with digital therapeutics, digital medicine, telehealth, or wellness applications.

Digital Mental Health promises myriad benefits to clinicians and patients alike, including improved access to and quality of mental healthcare, improved efficiencies and cost savings in care delivery, and improved patient outcomes through more personalized treatment approaches.

“Digital medicine and digital therapeutics are just about ready for primetime in the field of psychiatry and mental health, but now psychiatry needs to be ready for it,” said Rakesh Jain, MD, MPH, Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech Health Sciences School of Medicine and DMH360 Curriculum Advisor. “Psychiatry is stretched thin and our clinical outcomes are far less than optimum. Digital medicine and therapeutics can act as powerful augmenters to other interventions, and clinicians and patients are both in need of much education on this topic. This is where DMH360 will fill the gap – delivering highly practical, unbiased education, proven strategies, and clinically validated tools with the global mental healthcare community.”

Curriculum advisors include:

  • Steven Chan, MD, MBA, Stanford University School of Medicine
  • Rakesh Jain, MD, MPH, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine
  • Saundra Jain, PsyD, Adjunct Clinical Affiliate, University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing
  • Edward Kaftarian, MD, CEO, Orbit Health Telepsychiatry
  • Arwen Podesta, MD, Clinical Adjunct Faculty, Tulane University Psychiatry Department; Louisiana State University Department of Psychiatry

The DMH360 Initiative is proudly supported by Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc.

New study looks into the advantages of having a confidant

Opening up to someone requires trust, but it’s well worth the risk.

Confidants can have an immense impact on our psychological health we well as happiness.

Social support is powerful – it can diminish the negative impact of stress and trauma and helps us recover more quickly.

The benefits of having a confidant are incontestable. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson became close friends during the Revolutionary War, but their very contrasting political views eventually ended their friendship. They finally buried the hatchet and exchanged numerous warm letters, with Adams once telling his friend that “intimate correspondence with you…is one of the most agreeable events in my life.” Adams and Jefferson even died within hours of each other. Having someone to confide in not only provides social support during stressful times, research from PsychTests.com reveals that confidants can significantly enhance well-being.

Analyzing data collected from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, PsychTests’ researchers compared people who have a confidant to people who don’t. The Confidant group outscored the Non-Confidant group on a number of traits and skills, including the following:

(Note: Scores range from a scale from 0 to 100)

COMFORT WITH EMOTIONAL SITUATIONS & PEOPLE

> Score for Confidant group: 71

> Score for Non-Confidant group: 40

EMOTIONAL CONTROL

“Social support is powerful – it can diminish the negative impact of stress and trauma and helps us recover more quickly,” explains Dr. Ilona Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “This is because having someone to talk to not only lifts some of the emotional burden off our shoulders, it also makes us feel less alone. Moreover, confidants create a safe space for us to be vulnerable, which builds trust. The feeling of connection with someone releases oxytocin, the bonding/love hormone, which contributes to regulation of levels of dopamine, the happy/well-being hormone. The problem is that many people are reluctant to reveal personal things about themselves and show vulnerability. They fear mockery, rejection, or being taken advantage of, and so they suffer in silence. This is why a number of psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder go untreated – because therapy requires self-disclosure, vulnerability and the courage to look inside.”

“The restrictions and lockdowns during the pandemic resulted in physical isolation and had a major impact on mental health. Those with a strong support network were affected as well, but the gap between them and those who did not have close friendships before the pandemic widened even more. The good news is that there is a way to circumvent the challenges of finding a new friend in the midst of a pandemic, and enjoy the benefits of having a confidant. Joining an online support group or talking to a life coach or therapist can do wonders for your emotional and psychological health.”

Harvard Senior Fredericka Lucas First African American to Lead Prestigious Consulting Club

HCCG Director Fredericka Lucas

In future jobs and career paths that I am considering, it’s important for me to be able to see the direct impact of my work in organizations and communities. Policy Pathways definitely played a role in catalyzing that desire.

Fredericka Lucas, 2020 graduate of Policy Pathways’ inaugural session of the Summer Academy for Policy Leadership and Public Service Online (SAO), found a passion in policy, and is seeing it through. Fredericka, from Richmond, Virginia, is entering her final semester at Harvard as the first African American elected as Director of the prestigious Harvard College Consulting Group (HCCG). Fredericka has a senior thesis in the works and a full-time job at Bain and Company awaiting her in the fall. Strategy, operations, policy and related matters have favorably directed the past four years of Fredericka’s life.

Through several experiences since high school at Phillips Academy Andover (Class of 2018), Fredericka took a liking to health care policy. The first was an internship the summer before college with the Brain Injury Association of Virginia. She was looking into opioid use among prisoners as a risk factor for brain injury and mental health concerns. The team, she said, “tried to come up with policy interventions to stop substance abuse pipelines for key populations that are at high risk for brain injury as a result of opioid use. [The internship] was related to policy, so I kind of had that initial interest, but Policy Pathways really allowed me to take a more in-depth look into policy, which further sparked a desire to continue learning about it.”

Fredericka, pursuing a neuroscience major and economics minor, next applied to Harvard College Consulting Group (HCCG) in the fall of her sophomore year without much knowledge of consulting at all. “Consulting is a popular career path at Harvard,” she said, so she gave it a try. Once she recognized the applicability of both her medical and economic backgrounds to the work of the club, she realized she had found the perfect organization through which to pursue her career and leadership development aspirations.

By means of HCCG, she was able to work on three different health care cases with pharmaceutical and biotech companies. “That experience made clear to me that I liked consulting a lot. I thought it was really interesting to be able to get an inside look at the way that pharma and biotech work, and that solidified for me that consulting is a profession that I want to pursue in the longer term.”

This last term at Harvard marks Fredericka’s sixth semester with HCCG, which culminated in her election and elevation to Director. In HCCG, seniority matters. She worked on cases her first three semesters, and rose to Associate Director of External Initiatives for one term before serving as Vice Director of Operations. The 14-member board of executives is up for election every semester and is in charge of six-person case teams working with 18 clients.

As Director, Fredericka’s goals center around overall member experience and improving efficiency of operations. Her priorities include “increasing training and collaboration, centering culture, bonding, and knowledge sharing, and a continued focus on improving diversity retention, experience, and recruitment.”

Last summer, Fredericka interned at Bain & Company, one of the most prestigious consulting firms in the world. Assigned to the Washington, D.C. office, she worked with a health insurance company on a merger and acquisition case, which, as you would expect, was very intriguing. “It was really cool to be able to sit in on the client’s meetings and see our recommendations come to life and the materials we put together be implemented by the clients. I definitely got to see the impact while I was there.”

Fredericka so impressed her team and Bain & Company, she was offered a full-time position after graduation as an Associate Consultant! “Policy Pathways really showed me the importance of policy and the impact it has on organizations and communities and, on a larger scale, our country and other nations. I’m really excited to continue learning more about policy and get more involved, especially since I am moving back to DC after college.”

Fredericka certainly has much to keep her occupied in the meantime. She was on the Harvard varsity track team her first three years in college, and is now in the throes of thesis research. Since last spring, she has been working in a lab, focusing on early life stress in mice and how it affects their behavior and brain structures. By subjecting the mice to stress in the first nine days of life and testing sociability and reward learning on days 30 or 100, she will be able to identify differences in developmental stages in relation to a critical period, that closes around day 60, and into maturity.

“The thought,” she said, “is that the early-life stress paradigm can be compared to when humans are abused or neglected as children: if you experienced abandonment or serious trauma as a child, or if you didn’t have access to adequate support systems, such as affection, shelter, safety, and nutrition. Early-life stress can alter brain development and serve as a predictor of behavioral abnormalities and disorders later in life for humans. Through my studies, I look for the clinical and behavioral implications of my research and connection to policy initiatives: How can we best help babies and children who have suffered abuse, neglect, and abandonment?”

Fredericka recognizes a number of places in her life in which she has applied what she learned in Policy Pathways’ Summer Academy. Her experience lends an analytic hand in her coursework, first, especially in health policy and psychopharmacology where she deliberated the implications of different policies for drugs and mental illness. HCCG is also at the forefront of her mind and how the club can tie policy into its mission.

Fredericka has undoubtedly found her calling in healthcare consulting, a happening we are joyous to report. “My life experiences have honed my thinking about the future,” Fredericka shared. “I am more impact-oriented. How can what I do positively impact the lives of others? In future jobs and career paths that I am considering, it’s important for me to be able to see the direct impact of my work in organizations and on communities. Policy Pathways definitely played a role in catalyzing that desire.”

  • “We handed out Profilers to all 7,000 employees at NASA. It was a big hit.” – Helen Shoemaker
  • “The Profiler is the best stress test on the market today. Our employees love it.” – Dr. Eric Gustafson
  • “An effective and easy to use tool. It helps people understand their stress levels without a lot of psychobabble.” – Dr. Robert Lynn
  • “Have you ever watched a child skipping down the street and wondered: How did I go from feeling like that to feeling tired, achy and tense much of the time? You probably just chalked it up to aging or adulthood. But more often than not the real culprit here is stress.” – Dr. Dan Kirsch

Validation findings: The temporal stability (test-retest reliability) and the internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) of the overall scores on stress are excellent (r12=0.92 and a=1.95). Further, the temporal stability of the ten subscales ranges from very good to excellent (90.78 to 0.93), and the internal consistency of those subscales ranges from good to very good (0.69 to 0.84).

Early pioneers in the field of hypnosis were well aware of this and their insights serve as guideposts for hypnosis practitioners to this day. Reciting affirmations before drifting off to sleep and first thing in the morning just after waking up was the advice of Emile Coue, a French pharmacist and self hypnosis pioneer in the early 20th century.

Coue also devised a simple means to keep track of how many times an affirmation has been repeated that involves little more than a piece of string. This was a simple yet incredibly useful innovation, as it ensures that an affirmation has been repeated the required number of times without the need to count each one.

The “Affirmations for weight loss” blog post on Dietandexerciseguides.com draws much inspiration from Coue and outlines how his methodology can be adapted by those looking to lose weight.

Not only does this blog post provide a list of ready made affirmations, it also provides a comprehensive guide on the best practices for crafting and reciting positive affirmations for weight loss or, indeed, for any goal the reader may have in mind.
