Northeast Delta HSA to unveil mural in Grambling with Black Creatives Circle

News Image

“We believe there is medicine in creative expression, and the arts can help a person come alive in ways traditional treatment options can’t,” Dr. Sizer said.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) is set to unveil a public art mural on the campus of Grambling State University on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the Grambling High Building, 278 Central Ave, Grambling, LA 71245. The latest public art mural continues NEDHSA’s partnership with the Black Creatives Circle of North Louisiana (BCCNL).

The agency began working on using various art forms as one of its integrated health care, evidence-based prevention, communications, and treatment strategies to help serve persons with mental health, addictive disorders, and developmental disabilities.

The mural on the Grambling State University campus is the second commissioned public art completed through the BCCNL partnership. It was strategically placed on the campus in the Grambling High Building to help the students overcome the traumatic experiences they have had in their lives on campus or away from campus.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer said, “while the murals we’re commissioning are generating much-needed regional economic development, diversity, and job creation, they are also helping our region’s vulnerable populations get the help they need.”

“We believe there is medicine in creative expression, and the arts can help a person come alive in ways traditional treatment options can’t,” Dr. Sizer said. “We intend to help create an environment where dreams are realized, families are strong, bodies are healthy, community institutions are thriving, and spirits are renewed.”

According to the Americans for the Arts, 69 percent of the United States population believe the Arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences,” 73 percent feel the Arts give them “pure pleasure to experience and participate in,” and 81 percent say the Arts are a “positive experience in a troubled world.”

Grambling State University President Rick Gallot said he is “inspired by the partnership between the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Black Creatives Circle of North Louisiana, and Northeast Delta Human Services Authority.”

“The importance of supporting the whole student cannot be overstated,” Gallot said. “I am thankful for their collective vision of finding ways to keep mental health at the forefront of daily conversation.”

Grambling State University Chairperson of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Rodrecas Davis, MFA, said after COVID-19, he and other faculty had many students dealing with issues and “needed a place where they could unburden themselves.”

“The physical space is representative of the focus to provide an avenue for students to discuss self-care with their peers and address the importance of attending to one’s mental health,” Davis said. “My hope is that this space will facilitate those conversations.”

BCCNL’s President Vitus Shell said murals are “direct and great ways to express a community’s concerns and needs, envisioning a new future and safer space for the people.”

“Kids and the rest of the community can see themselves in a new light,” Shell said. “Murals can enforce themes for the people and show that someone cares about their quality of life.”

Shell said BCCNL looks like the city’s majority, and “we use our voices and talent to speak up for the unheard.”

“Artists are the visionaries of our neighborhoods, so with NEDHSA, this partnership is perfect,” Shell said. “The history and mission of NEDHSA align with our goals of empowering creatives to create change in any way imaginable.”

The mural reveal is open to the public. To reserve a spot at the reveal, visit nedhsamural.eventbrite.com.

Lotus Rising International Announces New Volunteer Training Program to Benefit Sex-Trafficking Survivors

News Image

I see our training program strengthening the volunteer community with the knowledge needed to successfully work with survivors as well as providing other nonprofit organizations with the help they need to continue to thrive.

Lotus Rising International, a nonprofit that provides holistic recovery programs for child sex-trafficking survivors, has announced a new training program for its volunteers.

Lotus Rising’s current programs include a variety of all-natural therapies ranging from yoga to sound therapy and are administered by volunteers, mostly on a local scale. The new volunteer training program will dramatically expand Lotus Rising’s reach by providing online curriculum, training and certification to qualified instructors in yoga, meditation, dance, art, sound therapy and more to allow these instructors to serve child sex-trafficking survivors in their own local communities across the globe.

“I have seen survivors in various stages of recovery and volunteers who, even though they have great intentions, have not been trained on how to specifically work with those experiencing such emotional trauma,” said Maria Aparis, founder and CEO of Lotus Rising International. “I see our training program strengthening the volunteer community with the knowledge needed to successfully work with survivors as well as providing other nonprofit organizations with the help they need to continue to thrive.”

Unlike other human-trafficking intervention organizations, Lotus Rising International’s recovery programs focus not only on survivors’ physical needs but their mental, emotional and even spiritual needs as well. This holistic approach to recovery is specifically designed to provide participants with the necessary skills to restore their well-being and propel their recovery after trauma.

“It’s exciting to see what more of an impact we can have,” said Sara Bohmholdt, a board member of Lotus Rising International. “We have received so much positive feedback from program participants, case managers and our partner organizations, so we’re thrilled to be able to continue to share these programs with even more children who need them.”

The new volunteer training program is expected to launch in Q1 of 2023. For more information, visit lotusrisinginternational.org.

Miami-Based Clinical Trial Company First In U.S. To Run Trials For MM-120 (LSD D-TARTRATE)

News Image

Conducting the first trial of its kind in the nation puts our companies at the forefront of psychedelic pharmacological research.

Segal Trials, a privately held network of clinical research sites throughout South Florida, announced that its’ investigators and the site are the first in the United States to conduct a large, randomized clinical trial to investigate MM-120 (LSD D-tartrate), for the treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Segal Trials’ investigators administered the first dose of MM-120 to a study participant on August 24th at The Center for Psychedelic and Cannabis Research in Miami, FL.

Dr. Rishi Kakar, Medical Director and Chief Scientific Officer at Segal Trials, serves as a Principal Investigator for the MM-120 trial, which is a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group design study to evaluate the potential effectiveness of MM-120 in patients with GAD.

“MindMed’s compound has the potential to change the way clinicians treat GAD,” said Dr. Kakar. “Certainly, conducting the first trial of its kind in the nation puts our companies at the forefront of psychedelic pharmacological research.”

Dr. Kakar and his team will conduct the trial at Segal’s Center for Psychedelic and Cannabis Research, which was specifically built to create a structured inpatient environment that ensures patient safety and comfort.

About Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

GAD is a chronic, often debilitating mental health disorder that affects approximately 6% of U.S. adults in their lifetimes. Symptoms of GAD include excessive anxiety and worry that persists for over six months, which can lead to significant impairments in social, occupational and other functioning, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). While there is substantial diagnostic overlap between GAD, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and other major mental health disorders, there has been very little innovation focused on the treatment of GAD in the past several decades due to the shift in focus from anxiety disorders like GAD toward depressive disorders like MDD, driven by the marketing of serotonin reuptake inhibitors starting in the 1990s.

News Image

William Spindler, a proud family patriarch and Marine Corps veteran, has completed his new book “Batsh*t Crazy”: a compelling look into his own personal life suffering mental illness.

“Batsh*t Crazy is a peek into the mind of someone suffering from PTSD and bipolar disorder, authored by William Spindler, a sufferer of both conditions. Before writing this, William had read many books on his conditions, but few offered any real-world experience or offered a look at what he could expect realistically from his symptoms, or even what to look for. Hoping to offer some help to others who find themselves asking the questions, Batsh*t Crazy was born.

A peek behind the curtain of his mind, his struggles, and even a few nuggets of advice. A window into what you may expect if you’re suffering, and signs to look for to those with a loved one who suffers.”

Published by Page Publishing, William Spindler’s insightful tale discusses his own experiences in a way he never was able to find in literature with the hopes of providing a beacon for those suffering mental illness as he is and to allow their loved ones to help guide them through.

Author Richard Andrews’s new book “Welcome to Nam” is a personal account of the author’s yearlong tour serving in the Vietnam War told through a series of vignettes

News Image

Richard Andrews, a veteran, has completed his new book “Welcome to Nam”: a gripping and spellbinding memoir of the author’s time overseas during the Vietnam War, and how his experiences stayed with him long after he returned home.

“After returning from Vietnam, I had a lot of nightmares,” writes Andrews. “They started getting so bad that I went to the Veterans Affairs to get help. After a few months, my psychiatrist mentioned for me to start writing them down as soon as I woke up. He then asked if I was getting any compensation for my ears from the land mine? In order to do that I had to tell the Board why I thought I had PTSD. But, to do that, I pretty much had to describe my whole year in Nam! So, I started from the beginning, circling Cam Rahn Bay, and seeing Vietnam for the very first time. I was excited and scared at the same time! I mean. It’s not every day you get to war! I just couldn’t picture someone actually wanting to kill me! I found out in a hurry just how wrong I was!”

Published by Page Publishing, Richard Andrews’s potent tale will transport readers to the front lines of war, where every day could be someone’s last. Expertly paced and full of thrilling moments, “Welcome to Nam” will captivate readers right up until the very end as Andrews relives his experiences for those ready to follow along for the ride.

Readers who wish to experience this mesmerizing work can purchase “Welcome to Nam” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

PowerDMS Launches the First Law Enforcement Wellness App Featuring Complete Anonymity and a Nationwide Peer Network

Law enforcement is experiencing a mental health crisis, and for many agencies, it’s an issue they don’t know how to begin to address. With PowerLine, our goal is to help law enforcement officers protect themselves from the stresses of their job and declining mental well-being.

Today PowerDMS launches PowerLine, the public safety industry’s first wellness app to include complete anonymity and a nationwide network of peers. PowerLine improves mental wellness for law enforcement professionals at every level with confidential, 24/7 mobile access to support and resources designed by law enforcement for law enforcement. PowerLine has been beta tested with a network of more than 2,100 officers.

Last year, suicide claimed the lives of 150 officers across the nation. According to statistics by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, police officers report much higher rates of depression, burnout, PTSD, and anxiety than the general population. The scarcity of wellness resources for law enforcement, combined with the stigma and potential career consequences of using those resources, means officers aren’t getting the support they need.

PowerLine offers support with around-the-clock access to a network of peer volunteers, dynamic topic-specific group sessions, and customized professional resources that address the issues officers face daily. Once PowerLine is enabled, officers can access the app on their own terms while remaining completely anonymous.

“PowerLine has the ability to serve as a powerful resource for officers, in helping them realize that they are not alone in their struggles,” said Sergeant Erik Welling, who spearheads the Wellness Unit for the Toledo (OH) Police Department. “The app gives officers an anonymous avenue to read articles, listen to podcasts, and watch videos that relate to specific areas of need. The officer can then reach out through the app to national and local resources.”

“Law enforcement across the country is experiencing a mental health crisis, and for many agencies, it’s an issue they don’t know how to begin to address. For more than 20 years, PowerDMS has helped law enforcement agencies protect their departments and officers with effective policy, compliance, and accreditation management. Now, we’re proud to help law enforcement officers protect themselves from the stresses of their job and declining mental wellbeing with PowerLine,” said Shane Evangelist, CEO of PowerDMS’s parent company, NEOGOV.

In addition to supporting officers, PowerLine also empowers law enforcement agencies with insights into officers’ top struggles. Leadership gets anonymized data about how – and how often – the app is used to measure the program’s effectiveness. This enables them to add more comprehensive resources for officers, knowing where support is most needed.

PowerLine offers:

  • Nationwide network of volunteer peers: Users are anonymously matched with peer volunteers outside their own department based on rank, experience level, and their department’s volume of high-impact crime, opening the door for honest conversations with peers about similar experiences.
  • Virtual group sessions moderated by volunteer peers: Individuals can choose scheduled group sessions by topic within the app. Every session is moderated by a volunteer peer.
  • Completely anonymity: There is never a risk of public disclosure or activity being reported to superiors. Confidential screen names and video keep every user completely anonymous during peer conversations and group sessions.
  • No user-specific tracking: All searches, viewed content, messages, conversations, and group sessions are completely anonymous. Personal information is never reported back to the department. All activity and conversations are immediately deleted after access.
  • Full library of wellness content: Videos, articles, and audio content built exclusively around the issues facing law enforcement officers today, in both their professional and personal lives.
  • Direct access to all department wellness resources: Ability to include direct, in-app access to local peer support, clergy, vetted therapists, and other services your department has already established.
  • View resource effectiveness: Users can rate each resource in the app, and scores are presented transparently in the department dashboard.
  • Identify department needs: Leadership can access the wellness needs of their departments with data about the most-engaged areas in the app. The department dashboard anonymously tracks downloads, logins, feature usage, and engagement in the app.

Northeast Delta HSA releases Fiscal Year 2022 Annual Impact Report

“NEDHSA took on a ground-breaking initiative last year through its Rise Above Stigma work, and this report will show that lives have been changed,” Shipp said.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) announces its Annual Impact Report for the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 (FY22), a document highlighting the agency’s service in fulfilling its mission to Northeast Louisiana.

NEDHSA Board of Directors Chairman Michael K. Shipp said he expresses his support and gratitude for the “innovation, creation of partnerships, and development of evidence-based practices in fulfilling the agency’s mission.”

“NEDHSA took on a ground-breaking initiative last year through its Rise Above Stigma work, and this report will show that lives have been changed,” Shipp said. “The agency carefully and compassionately engaged the region’s vulnerable populations in non-traditional ways through psychodramas, hip-hop music, and its mobile app. We are proud to serve in the capacity we do in supporting the work of the executive director, the staff, contractors, and many others who work to make NEDHSA what it is.”

The report reveals NEDHSA’s work in its 12-parish service area, where it delivered outpatient behavioral health services to more than 1,400 outpatient clients, providing more than 25,500 billable and non-billable services. In working with its funded Network of Care partnerships, NEDHSA served 826 clients in inpatient facilities.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer said, “the agency found that it must continue to meet the needs of the region’s people consistently, respectfully, and where they are.”

“As we continue to provide prevention and clinical services to individuals diagnosed with mental illnesses, addictive and substance use disorders, and developmental disability challenges, we remain committed to working across societal issues such as race, class, poverty, geographic isolation, and health stigma.” Dr. Sizer said. “Our annual report shows the value of our integrated health model and how it works to improve population health outcomes in our region.”

The annual report reveals that NEDHSA reviewed 580 applications for developmental disability eligibility, provided oversight, including Statement of Approval, to 339 participants, and provided Act-378 Program Services to 625 individuals. NEDHSA also provided valuable prevention and wellness services and education in FY2022, including completing 1,000 SYNAR compliance checks, distributing 1,382 NARCAN kits, and disseminating substance abuse prevention and treatment information to more than 1,154,999 citizens.

NEDHSA’s Director of Behavioral and Primary Health Analytics, Dr. Dependra Bhatta, said, “the agency’s integrated health approach is providing greater access to critical services needed by the most vulnerable in the region.”

“Particularly in our behavioral health clinics: a higher number of Black clients and male clients were diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum & other psychotic disorders,” Dr. Bhatta said. “For White clients and female clients, depressive disorders were most common. Anxiety, bipolar and related disorders, schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, and depressive disorders were higher in the 36-50 years age group.”

The report also shows NEDHSA’s client satisfaction and outcomes for FY2022, indicating high client satisfaction rates, with 98% of clients stating they would continue NEDHSA services and would recommend our clinics and services to their family, friends, and others. More than 83% of surveyed existing adult clients seen in NEDHSA outpatient clinics reported improved functioning, and over 80% of adult clients reported positive treatment outcomes and positive social connectedness. More than 70% of adult clients in FY2022 reported reduced alcohol/drug use.

Dr. Sizer added, “We will continue to innovate, integrate, form committed partnerships, be a catalyst for, and inspire those we serve. We understand the importance of our work in the lives of so many individuals, families, and communities in Louisiana’s Delta.”

Warriors Heart is grateful to be featured on A&E ‘Intervention’ as Peer-to-Peer Healing Solution for Military, Veterans and First Responders

As a private addiction treatment center that exclusively serves military, veterans and first responders, Warriors Heart is grateful for being featured on A&E’s “Intervention” on 7/18/22 as a solution.

“He came in hot. A lot of guys do. They’re scared, they’re embarrassed, they’re ashamed. So it takes a lot of guts to walk through the front door here at Warriors Heart,” explains Josh Lannon, Warriors Heart CEO/Co-Founder on A&E’s “Intervention” show.

Warriors Heart is grateful for being featured on A&E’s “Intervention” show on July 18, 2022, as part of the solution for a U.S. Army veteran and ICU Nurse. During the intervention, the “Intervention” team recommends Warriors Heart ‘s peer-to-peer healing program to help save the life of a son, brother, and father, whose alcoholism is out-of-control. His inspiring recovery story aired again on Monday, July 25, 2022.

Intervention” describes this episode as; “34-year-old served in the Army, and then had a successful career as an ICU Nurse. But after 8 years, the pressure of caring for seriously ill patients became too much, and he turned to alcohol to cope. Two years ago, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and ICU deaths skyrocketed, he spiraled further into his addiction and eventually lost his job, his wife and his kids. Interventionist: Ken Seeley.”

This 1-hour show features his brave family and Interventionist Ken Seeley, who convince the veteran and nurse to seek professional help at Warriors Heart for his addiction to vodka to “get his life back.” While he thinks “he is fine” and tells Ken that he is “very self-sufficient” (denial), viewers get an insider’s view of the heartbreaking struggles his family goes through that are driving their determination to save him.

During the moving intervention with loved ones, family members read prepared letters that express deep concerns that he is “so close to death” and plead for him to get help.

When he pushes back, Ken explains, “We found a treatment center in Texas, Warriors Heart, for vets and first responders.” When he resists because “therapy doesn’t work for him” because he doesn’t have feelings, Ken replies; “there will be a lot of people that came in with the same mentality that ‘I don’t have feelings because I numb my feelings. I put my feelings aside to protect others’, that’s a first responder. That’s what you’ve been doing all these years, especially during COVID, all that trauma watching those people die when you’re trained to save their life and you can’t.”

When his sister directly asks if he will go “now” to Warriors Heart, and his mother explains that their team will help him get his daughters and career back, he finally agrees to accept help.

A nurse and Interventionist Ken Seeley then go with the veteran to the airport, and provide mental support during his journey to Warriors Heart’s healing facility outside of San Antonio in Bandera, Texas. Once there, the team reassures him that they’re there to help, and show him a sign posted with a heart that says; “Welcome Home.” Warriors Heart’s Executive Director, Christina Moreno, also explains to him that he’s in the Detox center, and that’s the first part of his training / recovery program.

Towards the end of the show, Warriors Heart CEO/Co-Founder Josh Lannon emphasizes the feelings many frontline protectors feel when asking for help, “He came in hot. A lot of guys do. They’re scared, they’re embarrassed, they’re ashamed. So it takes a lot of guts to walk through the front door here at Warriors Heart.”

After 45 days of treatment, the warrior is like a new person and expresses gratitude for his sobriety. He reflects, “It feels great to be sober now – physically, feeling great. Mentally, a lot of the clarity is coming back. So we have a lot of different coping strategies, group therapy sessions, process groups, then one-on-one sessions with your individual therapist. Doing different projects there, wood shop, they’ve got K-9 facility where you can train service dogs and bring them home – looking forward to getting back into the hospital and working as a nurse in the ICU, and being with my kids.”

Modulate raises $30 Million Series A funding round

“ToxMod is changing the way game developers attack toxic behavior in their communities and this funding is a real validation of our mission to make online communities safer.”

Modulate, a leader in the fight against online toxicity, today announced the completion of a $30 million Series A funding round led by Lakestar with participation from existing investors Everblue Esports, Hyperplane Management, and others. In addition, Mika Salmi, Managing Partner of Lakestar, will join Modulate’s Board of Directors. The company will use the funds to expand its team and continue scaling its groundbreaking proactive voice moderation platform, ToxMod™.

“ToxMod is changing the way game developers attack toxic behavior in their communities and this funding is a real validation of our mission to make online communities safer,” said Mike Pappas, CEO of Modulate. “We’re thrilled to welcome Mika and his vast store of experience to the Board as we grow our team and ramp-up the development and deployment of ToxMod.”

ToxMod uses sophisticated machine learning models to go beyond transcription and understand not just what each player is saying but how they are saying it – including their emotion, volume, prosody, and more. This is crucial, as what’s harmful in one context may be friendly trash talk or genuinely supportive in another. ToxMod uses its nuanced understanding of voice to differentiate between these types of situations, identifying the worst actors while leaving everyone else free to enjoy their own approach to each game. Thanks to this sophistication, ToxMod can detect offenses with greater than 98% accuracy (which further improves over time), and enable moderation teams to respond to incidents over 25 times faster.

“Modulate’s technology to identify toxic behavior is light years ahead of anything else in the market,” said Mika Salmi, Managing Partner at Lakestar. “We at Lakestar are excited to be a part of Modulate’s mission to stop toxicity in games and in other social applications.”

Modulate is a team of world-class audio experts, gamers, allies, and futurists who are eager to build a better online world. For additional perspective on today’s announcement and to learn more about the company, read today’s blog post or visit Modulate.ai.
