ServiconCares Committed to Supporting and Advocating for Mental Health Awareness

We know providing personal hygiene-related products isn’t the answer to the homelessness and mental health crises. But it is a small way to reach out to people struggling in the communities where we work and live to let them know we are here and care, not only in May but year-round.

To highlight Mental Health Awareness Month, ServiconCares, the philanthropic arm of Servicon, Southern California’s leading hospital environmental services (EVS) provider and commercial cleaning services company, filled and donated 200 bags of personal products. The bags were donated through nonprofits to help people in the community who are homeless or otherwise struggling through a transitional phase of life.

Hygiene for Improved Mental Health

35 Servicon staff volunteered on May 15, filling bags with products donated by Servicon. The bags included items nonprofits cited as most useful for people who are homeless and others in need, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, feminine hygiene products, hydration pads, socks, and even some long-lasting, allergen-free snacks. Servicon volunteers stuffed and delivered 200 bags. The donations were split between Maple Counseling Center and the LGBTQ Center in South Los Angeles, two nonprofits that serve the local communities.

“Mental health is essential to overall well-being and can be negatively impacted by a person’s physical circumstances,” says Servicon President and CEO Laurie Sewell. “We know providing personal hygiene-related products isn’t the answer to the homelessness and mental health crises. But it is a small way to reach out to people struggling in the communities where we work and live to let them know we are here and care, not only in May but year-round.”

The company has implemented several programs recently aimed at safeguarding the mental health of its employees, including providing an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that goes beyond mental health insurance benefits, free access to trained therapists, childcare and eldercare assistance, and time management and financial literacy courses.

Help Throughout the Year

ServiconCares acts on its purpose, “to elevate the industry and create healthy environments for people to thrive,” by giving back to the community in May and throughout the years. In recent months, the company has partnered with local nonprofits, sponsoring several events in the last few months, including the Food Finders’ annual Stomp Out Hunger, a tree planting event with the TreePeople, the Walk for Kids to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and a women’s networking brunch held at Servicon’s headquarters in honor of Women’s History Month—to name but a few.

Downward Trend in Workers’ Mental Health Takes Toll, With Nearly Half of Employees Spending Between $500 and $6,000 Annually on Mental Health Services

News Image

New York, June 13, 2023 – Over the past 12 months, roughly half (45%) of American workers reported spending between $500 and $6,000 on mental health services, with nearly one-third (32%) saying they spent more than $1,501. This comes at a time when 95% of workers report they are concerned about the economic situation in the US, and financial worries are adding to their stress and burnout.

Despite rising employee stress, fewer than 6% of employers say they spend more than $500 on mental health per employee, and 72% do not plan to add additional mental health support in the year ahead.

These are among the findings from leading benefits consultant NFP’s 2023 US Benefits Trend Report.

“Today’s employees are looking for more than pay and traditional benefits,” said Doug Hammond, NFP’s chairman and CEO. “Compensation still reigns supreme in how employees measure value. But with many employers falling short in delivering mental health and well-being solutions, employees are having to invest their own money to address their needs. There is an opportunity for forward-thinking employers to step up and invest in the well-being of their employees, and our team is focused on guiding employers as they take these actions.”

While employees of all ages view mental health benefits as imperative, 55% of those aged 18-34 view them as critical, tantamount to their ranking of training/skill development programs. Across generations, more than six in ten (61%) workers think it is their employer’s responsibility to help them “achieve their best quality of life.”

The Upside for Employers

During a year of economic uncertainty and intense pressure to reduce costs amid ongoing turmoil in the labor market, employers face their own financial anxieties.

Despite this, employees feel employers could better align benefits spending with the services or protections that matter most to employees’ personal and professional lives. NFP research shows that while 32% of employers believe they take employee feedback into consideration regarding benefits offerings, only 18% of employees agree.

“Employers can evolve their benefits from ‘standard’ to ‘stand out,’” notes Kim Bell, head of Health and Benefits, NFP. “By offering more personalized benefits, employers can foster a culture of care that helps improve productivity, retention, healthcare costs and absenteeism — all while building a more connected and compassionate workplace.”

To this end, some employers are exploring offerings that support their diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) policy objectives through investments that can improve access to care and limited-scope healthcare reimbursement accounts.

More Personal vs. Professional Benefits Wanted

Over the past few years, the line between employees’ personal and professional lives has blurred further. Nearly three in four (71%) employees report they experienced personal life changes over the past 12 months and an additional 59% experienced professional changes. However, over six in ten (61%) say their benefits packages haven’t kept pace. In fact, only 31% of workers believe their employer offers benefits packages for “people like them.”

Perhaps as a result, fewer than three in ten (28%) workers say they make maximum use of their benefits. To address this disconnect, employers can explore voluntary benefits solutions that allow employees to customize the forms of protection they value most at minimal cost to employers.

While core voluntary benefits are already widely available, NFP has seen a sharp uptick in the range of options and expects innovative offerings to grow even more in the year ahead.

“Making the right benefits available to the right population of employees is more important than ever,” remarks Bell. “Despite economic conditions and recent mass layoffs, employees are still leaving jobs that don’t align with what they value. They have more agency, and they’re not afraid to make a change.”

Research Methodology

NFP’s US Employee and Employer Benefits Survey was administered online in January 2023 and includes 505 employee benefits decision-makers working in a human resources role, as well as 519 employees working in full-time or part-time roles across industries throughout the US. The NFP 2022 US Workforce Survey was administered online in November of 2022 and included 1,003 full-time and part-time workers spanning diverse industries across the US. In addition, NFP’s annual US Benefits Trend Report supports employers with data generated from the company’s proprietary benchmarking database of more than 4,000 employers of all sizes.

Here is NFP’s 2023 US Benefits Trend Report.

Viewing the world through jerk-colored glasses

Assuming there are potential enemies everywhere can compel us to become a villain ourselves.

Mistrusting everyone and assuming the worst of others might offer some protection, but cynicism is a doubled-edged sword.

As long as you think the world is filled with evil and take up your proverbial sword, all you’ll really be doing is feeding your own inner demon.

Author Lemony Snicket aptly described the fallacy of using cruelty to deal with cruelty when he said, “if everyone fought fire with fire, the whole world would go up in smoke.” When researchers at PsychTests.com looked into the personal and social consequences of assuming the worst of people, they discovered that cynics who think the world is a cruel place may use it as a reason to mistreat others.

Analyzing data collected from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, PsychTests’ researchers compared the attitudes, beliefs, and personality of people who assume the worst of others (“Cynics”) and those who don’t (“Non-Cynics”). Here’s what the results revealed:

AS EXPECTED, CYNICS TEND TO BE RATHER CLOSED-MINDED.

  • 52% of Cynics believe they are better off distrusting everyone (vs. 5% of Non-Cynics).
  • 41% assume that most non-profit organizations use their donations dishonestly (vs. 6% of Non-Cynics).
  • 35% refuse to accept opinions that differ from their own (vs. 3% of Non-Cynics).
  • Paradoxically, 44% of Cynics tend to blindly adopt their family’s or friends’ beliefs (vs. 19% of Non-Cynics).

PREDICTABLY, CYNICS ARE NOT ALWAYS ALTRUISTIC AND CAN BE EGO-CENTRIC.

  • 15% of Cynics have never donated to charity (vs. 5% of Non-Cynics).
  • 18% have never given food or money to a homeless person (vs. 11% of Non-Cynics).
  • 15% said that they would rather have powerful, inauthentic friends than real, uninfluential friends (vs. 2% of Non-Cynics).
  • 22% would rather be feared than loved (vs. 3% of Non-Cynics).
  • 43% have dated or befriended someone strictly to gain something (vs. 23% of Non-Cynics).

CYNICS MAY SOMETIMES OFFER UNSOLICITED AND POTENTIALLY HARSH ADVICE.

  • 14% of Cynics think it’s okay to tell an obese stranger how to lose weight (vs. 3% of Non-Cynics).
  • 18% would have no problem telling a homeless person to get a job (vs. 5% of Non-Cynics).
  • 29% believe it’s a good idea to encourage a depressed person to “toughen up” (vs. 10% of Non-Cynics).
  • 16% consider it acceptable to tell a mother that her son will turn out gay if she continues to allow him to play with dolls (vs. 2% of Non-Cynics).

CYNICS ARE MORE LIKELY TO STRUGGLE WITH A NUMBER OF PERSONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES.

  • 63% of Cynics find it hard to express their feelings (vs. 18% of Non-Cynics).
  • 59% are unwilling and/or unable to accept compliments (vs. 25% of Non-Cynics).
  • 51% admitted that they change their attitude, behavior, or appearance in order to please others (vs. 12% of Non-Cynics).
  • Deep down, 55% of Cynics desperately want to be liked by others and have a strong need for approval (vs. 40% of Non-Cynics).
  • 26% are unhappy with their lives (vs. 5% of Non-Cynics).

“When you come into contact with someone who is staunchly cynical, there’s a good chance that it stems from an unresolved issue or hang-up,” explains Dr. Ilona Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “For example, in our study, 63% of the Cynics said that they frequently put other people’s needs ahead of their own even when they don’t want to, and 62% feel they have been taken advantage of one too many times. This is telling: more than half have been seriously mistreated, and when emotional injuries remain unhealed and unresolved, we carry them with us. This is what leads Cynics to see the world as cruel and to feel that the only logical response is to be cruel themselves…or to strike first by biting the snake before it can bite them, even if the snake is only imagined. Unfortunately, this approach to life offers little in terms of creating a sense of security or happiness. Granted, there are circumstances when you’ve got to be tough and assertive to deal with an unscrupulous person, but fighting cruelty with cruelty is not a path to resolution. And the reality is, as long as you think the world is filled with evil and take up your proverbial sword, all you’ll really be doing is feeding your own inner demon.”

Practicing AMI’s Conference Curriculum Transformed My Burnout Crisis into a Renewed Love of Medicine and Greater Creativity

Anthony Santilli MD speaking with Conference Director Leonard Perlmutter

“Ten years ago I was ready to leave medicine, but by practicing what I learned at the AMI Physicians Conference, I was again able to say it’s the best job in the world.” — Anthony Santilli MD

Anthony Santilli, MD will share “My Burnout Story” with medical colleagues at the American Meditation Institute’s 12th annual Heart and Science of Yoga CME Conference October 17-21, 2023 at the Equinox Resort and Spa in Manchester, Vermont. This proprietary, comprehensive training in Yoga Science as Holistic Mind/Body Medicine, which was recently found in a peer-reviewed clinical study to reduce Burnout and Stress, is accredited by the American Medical Association for 34 CME credit hours, and will be offered simultaneously in-person and virtually on Zoom.

During his conference presentation, Dr. Santilli will recount the conditions that led to his burnout, and the specific Yoga Science tools he learned and employed that enabled him to transform the debilitating consequences of burnout into an increase in energy, creativity and a renewed love for his medical practice. According to Dr. Santilli, “From this conference I’ve gained knowledge to help myself, which in turn, has helped my patients dramatically. Each year I attend the AMI conference, I feel a renewed sense of empowerment, and feeling empowered is important in the practice of my entire life––personal and professional.”

Speaking directly to the challenges facing today’s healthcare professionals, curriculum developer and faculty director Leonard Perlmutter says, “You became a doctor because you care about people. You work hard and truly want to serve your patients and profession. But as a physician you are subject to many stressors: overwork, cumbersome regulations, EMR and coding requirements, medical liability, on-call issues, lack of sleep, hospital politics, and frustrations with the reimbursement structure. But regardless of how challenging your circumstances might feel today, the 12th annual Heart and Science of Yoga® CME Conference will provide you a set of practical tools that can enable you to improve your job satisfaction and work-life balance, while reducing burnout and feelings of anger, depression, stress and exhaustion.”

Dr. Santilli is a Board Certified Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician. He graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine, and attended Brown University where he completed his training in Internal Medicine. After practicing as a hospitalist at Albany Medical Center, he completed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. Currently, Dr. Santilli practices with Schenectady Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates, where he serves as Vice President. He joined the Ellis Hospital Medical Staff in July 2014, and has recently served as its Chief of Staff. Anthony is a board member of the Innovative Health Alliance of New York (IHANY), and serves as co-chair of AMI’s Department of Medical Education.

The dedication, enthusiasm, and teaching methodology of the entire AMI faculty create a dynamic and interactive course for attending medical providers. All faculty members are graduates of previous AMI medical conferences. In addition to Dr. Santilli, other presenters will include AMI founder Leonard Perlmutter; Mark Pettus MD, board certified internist and nephrologist and Director of Medical Education and Population Health of Berkshire Health Systems; Kristin Kaelber MD, PhD, board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics; Renee Rodriguez-Goodemote, MD, Medical Director of the Saratoga Hospital Community Health Center; Jesse Ritvo MD, Assistant Medical Director, Inpatient Psychiatry, University of Vermont Health Center; Joshua Zamer, MD, Medical Director for Addiction Medicine at Saratoga Hospital Community Health Center and Chairman of the Department of Family Practice; Jenness Cortez Perlmutter, co-founder and faculty member of The American Meditation Institute; Anita Burock-Stotts, MD, board certified in Internal Medicine; Janine Pardo MD, board certified in Internal Medicine, and Gustavo Grodnitzky PhD, Chair of the AMI Psychological Education Committee.

The conference core curriculum has been endorsed by medical pioneers Dean Ornish MD, Larry Dossey MD, and Bernie Siegel MD. According to Psychiatry physician and past participant Pamela Shervanick MD, “This conference is life changing! Everyone in every facet of life should experience this teaching. I’m so grateful to AMI for bringing truth to doctors with love and compassion. This is a light the world needs to see.”

Cannacore Group Expands Services to Psychedelic Markets in Oregon and Colorado

With a Team that has over 19+ years of combined knowledge and experience in regulated industries, Cannacore Group brings a unique and innovative perspective to each application as we have worked in various states from vertically integrated systems to individual licensing.

The Magic Mushroom’s Continuous Legalization Across the United States

In 2020, Oregon became to first state to legalize psilocybin for therapeutic purposes through [Measure 109, which was approved by a 55.75% majority vote. Due to the passage of the Psilocybin Program Initiative, licensed service providers are allowed to prescribe psilocybin products to patients 21 or older. Under the Oregon Health Authority’s framework, there are four (4) types of available licenses: (1) Service Center; (2) Manufacturer; (3) Facilitator; and (4) Psilocybin Testing Laboratory. Per the Oregon Psilocybin Services’ spring newsletter, there have been 11 applications submitted for Service Center licenses, 16 applications submitted for Manufacturer license, 27 applications submitted for Facilitator licenses, and 2 applications submitted for Laboratory licenses. Presently, only 2 licenses have been awarded thus far.

Two years after the City of Denver decriminalized the use of psilocybin for adults 21 and older, the state of Colorado passed Proposition 122 in 2022 to legalize psychedelics, specifically psilocybin for therapeutic uses in mental healthcare. The appointed Natural Medicine Advisory Board will make its first recommendations by September 30th for regulatory oversight, so clinics can begin offering psilocybin by late 2024. Due to its more expansive legislation, Proposition 122 further allows officials to develop similar programs by 2026 for other psychedelic substances like DMT, ibogaine, and mescaline (excluding peyote).

Although Oregon and Colorado are the only “legalized” markets presently, several other states and cities are beginning to not only decriminalize the use of psilocybin, but also expanding their research initiatives. Washington DC has decriminalized its use, as well as several cities within Michigan, Massachusetts, and Washington. Further, numerous states have either passed or initiated bills to promote research into the medical and potential of psilocybin for a variety of conditions. Such states include: Arizona, Hawaii, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Utah, and more!

New CMI Media Group Research Highlights Opportunity for Health Brands to Better Support Healthcare Parity for Women

“It is imperative that we focus health priorities on women, a need that is overdue and truly impacts women’s health outcomes,” said Julie Hurvitz Aliaga, EVP, Innovation, Content and Partnerships at CMI Media Group.

Healthcare communications specialist CMI Media Group, a WPP company (NYSE: WPP), has released new research findings that indicate an opportunity for healthcare advertisers to better serve the needs of women. Women are more open to receiving healthcare information and more likely to visit pharmaceutical brand sites than men, but they are much more receptive to that information when it is customized to them. This is particularly true among LGBTQ+ and BIPOC audiences. The findings illustrate the healthcare gap that exists when brands position their offerings only to a general audience based on straight white men.

The study also reinforces the inequality of healthcare services, particularly in mental health, where women tend to endure an excessive “mental load” that impacts their health as well as all other aspects of their daily lives. As well, the report dives into lack of parity in oncology, cardiovascular, and other areas of health that are impacting women’s health outcomes.

“It is imperative that we focus health priorities on women, a need that is overdue and truly impacts women’s health outcomes,” said Julie Hurvitz Aliaga, EVP, Innovation, Content and Partnerships at CMI Media Group. “As with previous generations, we are calling on a movement to leverage this research to shed light on issues that have not been at the forefront or seen as critical. Women of every age, race, and sexual orientation are experiencing inequality in healthcare. As an industry it is our time to show up in powerful ways to advocate for each other and make a pact to do better.”

Recent research from CMI Media Group parent company WPP, “Health on Her Terms,” highlights that health outcomes are improved when women’s health is prioritized in advertising. While there has been progress in making advertising more equitable, the healthcare industry lags behind.

CMI Media Group will be joining Grey Health & Wellness onstage at WPP Beach at The Cannes Lions Festival in June to further amplify the research findings from the CMI Media Group report and Health on Her Terms.

In addition, CMI Media Group is collaborating with Health@WPP on an initiative supported by SHE Media that will survey women about their healthcare communications needs to further the understanding, conversation and evolution in healthcare parity. This includes a promise letter signed by CEOs across WPP’s healthcare agencies that vows to prioritize equity in healthcare advertising.

CMI Media Group’s Audience Intelligence practice holistically connects audience strategy, marketing/ad research, social intelligence, and data insights further enabling always on-intelligence that drives dynamic content, media-mix optimization and deeper engagements. With a focus on driving clients towards where innovation and data intersect, this forward-thinking mentality will continue to position the company as the leader in precisely human insight and activation.

This research was created in collaboration with CMI Media Group and Compas’ Employee Resource Group (HER)Story. The (HER)story ERG creates a forum for bringing awareness to societal and workplace inequities uniquely affecting women, while also celebrating progress made by the trailblazers.

Kinslow, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Georgetown University, who will be speaking at the conference next month. “It is also important to re-establish in-person organizational norms such as service awards or bring your child to work day to rebuild a sense of community. Work is not only a place to accomplish tasks but is also a place where friendships are built and colleagues collaborate on important initiatives that instill pride and belonging,” continued Kinslow.

“I think that everybody is well aware of the challenges the pandemic brought forth when it comes to mental and behavioral health,” said Vekonda Luangaphay, Content Manager at Validation Institute. “If there is one positive outcome we can point to though, it is that this topic is openly discussed like never before. We are proud to present several discussions which tackle mental and behavioral health head-on while spotlighting healthcare industry’s tremendous efforts to address the crisis.”

Featured organizations delivering these sessions include: Citi, Holmes Murphy and Associates, Community Behavioral Health, Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness (ABHW), Prudential Financial, Hendry Marine Industries, Health Transformation Alliance, ARC Fertility, Xerox, and the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions.

Benefit Design Strategies for Employers is co-located with The Healthcare Innovation Congress, thINc360. Registrants can attend sessions at both events at no additional cost.

“Getting outdoors and being active is so important for children’s mental and physical wellbeing,” said American Academy of Pediatrics President Sandy Chung, MD, FAAP. “The scientific evidence tells us outdoor play is good for children’s health. Plus, most children love it!”

Thirteen years ago, National Park Trust launched Kids to Parks Day. Held annually on the third Saturday in May, this year’s national day of outdoor park play and recreation will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023. For 2023, National Park Trust is teaming up with the American Academy of Pediatrics and Mental Health Awareness Month to promote the many physical and mental health benefits of getting outdoors and enjoying nature and parks.

Families are encouraged to explore new parks, public lands, or waters or revisit a favorite and plan a day of outdoor activity, which Park Trust hopes will inspire families to plan park trips and outdoor fun throughout the summer months.

“Getting outdoors and being active is so important for children’s mental and physical wellbeing,” said American Academy of Pediatrics President Sandy Chung, MD, FAAP. “The scientific evidence tells us outdoor play is good for children’s health. Plus, most children love it! On Kids to Parks Day, take your children to a park for summer fun, exercise and better mental health.”

“Whether or not your local park is planning a special Kids to Parks Day event, we hope families will get outdoors, be active and plan a fun outing to launch the summer park season,” said Grace Lee, executive director of National Park Trust. “As we like to say, kids need parks, and parks need kids.”

National Park Trust has a robust website, http://www.parktrust.org, to help families find outdoor events around the country and activity guides that help to plan a fun adventure. Additionally, families can download National Park Trust’s free ParkPassport mobile app to access park-specific information.Founded by National Park Trust, the mission of Kids to Parks Day is to foster the next generation of park stewards.

“By engaging kids in memorable outdoor experiences while discovering and exploring parks, kids learn about park stewardship, outdoor recreation, STEM, and the history of our country and its amazing national treasures,” added Grace Lee.

ABOUT NATIONAL PARK TRUST

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2023, National Park Trust’s mission is to preserve parks today and create park stewards for tomorrow.
