Macy Gray Releases “Buddha” Video, Advocates for Mental Health

https://www.prweb.com/

Cover art contest winner by Jonathan Caustrita

“To everybody struggling with something, it’ll be okay, just don’t let it beat you. Buddha says ‘concentrate the mind in the present’ – and that’s where it’s at all the time.”

Legendary R&B/soul singer Macy Gray has released the official music video for “Buddha” (featuring blues-rock guitarist Gary Clark Jr.) from her latest album, RUBY, following an exclusive premiere via Rolling Stone. The video was directed by the multi-talented Teyana “Spike Tee” Taylor.

“Buddha” finds Macy reflecting on her 20+ years in the music business, the disorienting nature of fame, and her quest to find her center and stay grounded.

As Macy told Rolling Stone,

“Underneath the Gary Clark solo, the incredible production by Johan Carlsson, and the Teyana Taylor-directed video is a little story about my battles with mental health. Though it has held me up and set me back many times, I was able to write this song because I am winning my war with it. And I’m able to celebrate my present and look forward to my future because of it. To everybody struggling with something, it’ll be okay, just don’t let it beat you. Buddha says ‘concentrate the mind in the present’ – and that’s where it’s at all the time.”

Leading up to the video release, Macy hosted a cover art contest on Instagram and received over 300 submissions from artists hoping to win the $500 prize and have their art featured as the official “Buddha” single artwork. The winnerwas created by Jonathan Caustrita (@jonathancaustrita), an illustrator from Dallas, TX.

“Macy Gray’s RUBY is named for more than just a jewel: it describes her polish, passion and the rich, regal countenance she’s absorbed since reclaiming her focus and artistry.” – Soul Tracks

“With stunning production and Gray at her most charismatic, [RUBY] is a showcase of an artist in her prime.” – Atwood Magazine

MORE ABOUT MACY GRAY:

“I love the gem ruby,” Macy explains. “It’s so regal. I really wanted a title that would stick. The stone is also red of course, which is my favorite color. It’s rich and has history. It’s classic — and so is this album.”

That unmistakable rasp, unshakable grasp on soul, and funky spirit ensured her status as a 21st century icon since her arrival with the triple-platinum album On How Life Is in 1999. Selling over 25 million albums globally, winning a GRAMMY® Award and two BRIT Awards, collaborating with everyone from Ariana Grande to Galactic, and selling out venues in nearly every corner of the globe two decades into her storied career. Macy’s talents resound beyond music as well. She starred in Tyler Perry’s Black Reel Award-winning For Colored Girls and would grace the screen everywhere from Brotherly Love and Cardboard Boxer to NETFLIX’s hit Fuller House. Moreover, she made a now legendary appearance in Training Day alongside Academy® Award winner Denzel Washington one of many on-screen hallmarks.

Now, her tenth full-length album, RUBY [Artistry Music/Mack Avenue], reaffirms and reasserts that signature rarity millions continue to treasure.

Channeling the spirit of the “grimy” R&B and smoky jazz closest to her heart, Macy made a leap forward by looking back to formative inspirations. However, she updated those elements with enriched, entrancing, and enigmatic soundscapes brought to life by producers Johan Carlsson [Michael Bublé, Maroon 5], Tommy Brown [Jennifer Lopez, Fifth Harmony, Travis Scott], and Tommy Parker Lumpkins [Janet Jackson, Justin Bieber].

“They’re all stellar producers, and they helped me craft an incredibly rich project,” she goes on. “They were brilliant in integrating horns and strings. There are so many complex layers. I wanted something that never got boring in terms of the music.”

RUBY canvases a wide spectrum for the songstress. Raucous horns that feel ripped from a classic seventies flick augment the grit on “Cold World” as “Jealousy” spins a covetous narrative that soars as it seduces. Gary Clark Jr. adds six-string firepower to “Buddha.” Everything culminates on the reggae-inspired “Witness,” which shuffles between mainland soul and island grooves as she croons, “I wish I was Jesus. I would make sure to fix it. Can I get a witness?”

“I think my sound reflects where I am,” she exclaims. “I’m a little older…just a little [laughs]. I’ve had more experiences and influences. I want my sound to feel fresh and relevant. I feel that I was able to achieve that, and I’m extremely proud of this album.” Audiences will feel that, too as she brings the record to life nightly in North America, the UK, and Europe on her 2018 tour.

In the end, RUBY represents Macy Gray at her most passionate, poetic, and powerful. “I hope audiences can feel connected to the record,” she leaves off. “I hope that I can make them smile and make them reflect. I love when fans reach out with stories of how I’ve inspired, influenced them, or helped them get through a moment in their life. I want them to take away sincerity, honesty and authenticity. I’m hopeful that I am providing them with something that is meaningful and thoughtful. I’m still looking at how I can contribute more artistically and as a human. This is one way.”

AltaPointe’s Mental Health Professionals Want to Help You Cope with Disaster

We are in the peak of the 2019 Hurricane season. Living along the Gulf Coast, we are no stranger to natural disasters. We are all well-rehearsed in what it takes to prepare for say a hurricane. What we might struggle with is how to handle life following a disaster or traumatic event, which can pose tremendous psychological risks to our mental health.

Following a natural disaster, it is natural to experience an array of emotions, such as shock, frustration, and sadness. You may experience nightmares and reoccurring thoughts about the events, or you may not be able to sleep at all. A loss of appetite is normal, and so is overeating. These reactions can have an impact on our physical and mental well-being.

Thankfully, there are steps we can take to better cope with disaster or trauma lessening the psychosomatic impacts.

  • Talk about what happened. By talking with others about the event, you can relieve stress and realize that others may share your feelings.
  • Avoid overexposure to images of the event. Watching or reading news about the event over and over again will only increase your stress.
  • Find time for activities you enjoy. Read a book, go for a walk, or do something else you find enjoyable. These healthy activities can help you get your mind off the disaster and keep the stress in check.
  • Take one thing at a time. Pick one urgent task and work on it. Once you accomplish that task, choose the next one. “Checking off” tasks will give you a sense of accomplishment and make things feel less overwhelming.
  • Ask for help. If your feelings do not go away or are so intense that they interfere with your ability to function in daily life, make an appointment with a mental health professional. Do not try to cope alone. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

If you find you need help coping following a natural disaster or another traumatic event AltaPointe Health wants to help. AltaPointe has 17 outpatient locations across seven-counties in Alabama. For more information, call (251) 450-2211 or (888) 335-3044.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy for Psychiatric Disorders Position Statement Issued by American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and American Psychiatric Nurses Association

CRNAs and PMH Nurses complement each other’s unique expertise in the delivery of ketamine infusion therapy with a shared focus on improving patient safety and outcomes.

Ketamine infusion therapy is increasingly being used to treat illnesses such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, treatment resistant depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are educated and trained to provide ketamine infusion therapy services to individuals with chronic and medication resistant mental health disorders, collaborating with professionals such as Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (PMH nurses) who specialize in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric-mental health disorders.

To support implementing this therapy with a focus on patient safety, positive outcomes, and general well-being, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) have issued a joint position statement. This statement outlines the important roles of PMH nurses and CRNAs in providing ketamine infusion therapy for psychiatric disorders and provides crucial resources to support each provider. By leveraging the scope and standards of practice of both PMH nurses and CRNAs, these professionals collaborate to provide ketamine infusion therapy in a manner that promotes safe and effective treatment for patients.

“Psychiatric-mental health nurses play a vital role in the assessment, referral to treatment, and ongoing monitoring of patients receiving ketamine infusion therapy for psychiatric disorders. Through their nursing expertise in psychiatric-mental health, they ensure that patients who receive ketamine infusion therapy achieve the best possible mental health outcomes in a safe and therapeutic manner that promotes their long-term recovery,” says APNA President Gail Stern, RN, MSN, PMHCNS-BC. “We are fortunate to be able to collaborate with our CRNA colleagues in providing this emerging treatment which holds promise for so many individuals with psychiatric disorders.”

“The use of ketamine infusion therapy to help treat psychiatric disorders is a godsend for many patients, particularly for those patients where standard treatment has not worked,” says AANA President Kate Jansky, “CRNAs and PMH Nurses complement each other’s unique expertise in the delivery of ketamine infusion therapy with a shared focus on improving patient safety and outcomes. We are grateful for the opportunity to work closely with our psychiatric-mental health nursing colleagues to bring comfort and quality of life to patients in need of this new therapeutic treatment.”

“APNA is proud to partner with AANA to provide a joint statement that will help guide nursing professionals as they provide this therapy,” say APNA Executive Director Nicholas Croce Jr., MS. “Providing evidence-based resources and promoting collaboration amongst professionals will only serve to enrich the safe and effective care patients receive.”

“It has been an honor and privilege to work in partnership with the APNA to develop this important position statement defining the roles and responsibilities of these exceptional nursing professionals in the administration of this new and effective therapeutic treatment,” says AANA CEO Randall Moore, DNP, MBA, CRNA.

Founded in 1931 and located in Park Ridge, Ill., and Washington, D.C., the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) is the professional organization representing nearly 54,000 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and student registered nurse anesthetists across the United States. As advanced practice registered nurses, CRNAs are anesthesia experts who administer more than 49 million anesthetics to patients in the United States each year and are the primary providers of anesthesia care in rural America. For more information, visit http://www.aana.com and http://www.future-of-anesthesia-care-today.com.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a national professional membership organization committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders. APNA’s membership is inclusive of all psychiatric-mental health registered nurses including associate degree, baccalaureate, advanced practice (comprised of clinical nurse specialists and psychiatric nurse practitioners), and nurse scientists and academicians (PhD). APNA serves as a resource for psychiatric-mental health nurses to engage in networking, education, and the dissemination of research. For more information visit http://www.apna.org.

All Button INC. Announces the Launch Date of Its Second Kickstarter Project, Fidget Ball

News Image

Users can rotate both spheres in perpetual motion while also enjoying the soft clicking of the gears. The combination of the action and ASMR sounds of the Fidget Ball have been discovered to help reduce stress and anxiety levels.

After 642 Kickstarter backers helped All Button INC. raise over $30,000 for the Airless Pen, the company has announced the launch of its second Kickstarter Project, Fidget Ball. The project is set to go live on Monday, September 2nd, 2019, at 9:00 pm PST.

Research and design development for the Fidget Ball began back in 2017, but was put on hold while the company shifted its focus and energy to the Airless Pen. After all of the Kickstarter rewards were delivered, All Button INC. resumed development for the Fidget Ball and created a fully functioning prototype earlier this year.

The concept for Fidget Ball has been finalized and is now undergoing a series of quality control tests. All Button INC. has also stated that manufacturing for the Fidget Ball will take place in South Korea.

After deciding to reinvent the form factor of traditional fidget spinners, All Button INC. was able to create the Fidget Ball, which utilizes two spheres that are connected through gears. Users can rotate both spheres in perpetual motion while also enjoying the soft clicking of the gears. The combination of the action and ASMR sounds of the Fidget Ball have been discovered to help reduce stress and anxiety levels.

The Fidget Ball also includes massage beads on the outer shell which can be used to target pressure points and massage different parts of the body. The massage effects from Fidget Ball are best for the hands, shoulder, and feet.

Due to its compact size, The Fidget Ball can be taken virtually anywhere. It is best enjoyed at the office, home, and in public transportation.

The Fidget Ball will be available in two colors, silver, and charcoal grey. Early Bird price slots have been capped at 50, so backers are encouraged to take advantage of the heavily discounted prices while they are still available. Any journalists or influencers interested in receiving a sample of Fidget Ball for review can reach out to All Button INC.’s media contact or through its Kickstarter page.

Pow! Wow! Long Beach Adds a Splash of Art to the Regency Palms Long Beach Building

Artist Luise Ono's mural on the Regency Palms Long Beach building

Artist Luise Ono’s mural on the Regency Palms Long Beach building

Through POW! WOW! I wanted to express how I felt about the mural, so I had chosen these flowers for this mural.

In a celebration and support of the arts, the fifth annual Pow! Wow! Long Beach Street Art Festival approved Meridian Senior Living’s Regency Palms Long Beach Assisted Living and Memory Care (RPLB) located at 117 E. 8th Street to don one of the 21 beautiful large-scale murals installed by internationally renowned artists. Originating from Los Angeles to other parts of the world, artists enhanced the urban landscape of Long Beach in painting their amazing murals during the Pow! Wow! celebration.

Based in Tokyo, artist Luise Ono enhanced the side of the RPLB’s building with “greater than life” Hawaiian-like flowers and greenery. It was quite a spectacle to see Ms. Ono transform a dull wall over seven very hot days into a striking garden creating a splash and wow! for visitors walking by.

Growing up in a single-parent, low income household, Ms. Ono loved to draw at a young age. At 21, Luise was motivated after the death of her mother to live her life as she wanted; consequently, she became an artist. In 2010, she started live painting and was self-taught building up her career to accomplish a painting project for a television commercial in 2013. Luise participated in the first POW! WOW! in Japan in 2015 which was a turning point in her career that inspired her desire to paint globally. While the majority of her murals are located in Japan, she is always seeking for a chance to paint abroad and actively looking for international opportunities.

In describing the RPLB mural, Ms. Ono elaborates, “This mural consists of motifs of alstroemeria, lilium auratum, crocus, and the blanket flower. Each flower has a flower word and it is continuation, fun, life, memories, unity, and admiration for the future. Through POW! WOW! I wanted to express how I felt about the mural, so I had chosen these flowers for this mural.”

The public is welcome to visit Luise’s beautiful mural at RPLB’s building located at 117 E. 8th Street, Long Beach, CA. For more information about RPLB and their upcoming events, visit the community website at: https://msl.life/RPLB or call (562) 205-8110.

Active Minds Releases New Educational Resources to Help People Support a Friend

Active Minds, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization supporting mental health awareness and education for young adults, released new educational resources today designed to help people support a friend or loved one who may be struggling.

“Stigma surrounding mental health has dropped dramatically in recent years among young adults,” says Laura Horne, Active Minds’ Chief Program Officer. “However, we hear from many that they don’t always know what to say when a friend says they are stressed, having a difficult day, are in pain, or have a mental health need.”

50% of us will experience a mental health issue in our lifetime, and 1 in 5 adults has a diagnosable mental illness. The need for peer support in tough moments is underlined by research showing 67% of young adults first tell a friend they are feeling suicidal before telling anyone else.

In honor of September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Active Minds launched new V-A-R resources including conversation tips, tools and guides to help.

V-A-R is a simple approach to everyday conversations, and includes three easy steps: Validate, Appreciate, and Refer. A conversation using V-A-R is one that openly and actively listens to a friend, and offers means to help them feel heard and supported. The newly released V-A-R guides were developed knowing a conversation could make all the difference for someone suffering, and prevent a crisis from developing later.

“With V-A-R, we hope to make clear that someone doesn’t need to be in a crisis to seek help, you don’t have to be an expert to provide help, and help can come in many different forms,” says Alison Malmon, Executive Director and Founder of Active Minds. “Being there for someone in a moment of need is what it’s all about.”

The new V-A-R skill-building tools can be found at activeminds.org/VAR.

About Active Minds:

Active Minds is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization supporting mental health awareness and education for young adults. Powered by a network on more than 800 high school and college campuses, in workplaces and communities, and through a vast public audience, Active Minds is creating communities of support and saving lives.

Active Minds’ signature programs include a college and high school chapter program, the acclaimed Send Silence Packing® exhibit, its compelling Active Minds Speakers, and the newly launched Active Minds @ Work initiative. A recent landmark study by the RAND Corporation confirms that Active Minds has a significant, positive impact on student health and well-being by creating a supportive climate for mental health on college campuses.
