VFR Healthcare and Operation Art District Healthcare Partner to Enhance Service Offerings to Veterans

“I strongly believe that there is a relationship between creative expression and healing. OAD Healthcare is helping military Veterans discover the healing powers of the arts and we are proud to partner with VFR Healthcare.” – Mercedes Dericho, founder of OAD Healthcare

VFR Healthcare (Veteran & First Responder Healthcare) and the non-profit Operation Art District Healthcare (OAD Healthcare) today announced a new partnership to enhance Veterans’ access to Creative Arts Therapies.

OAD Healthcare offers a unique approach to helping active-duty military members and Veterans suffering from mental health issues through a holistic approach to the healing process. This unique approach, called Creative Arts Therapy, is offered in both group and individual sessions which includes techniques that can be used for self-expression and personal growth when the patient is unable to participate in traditional “talk therapy,” or when that approach has become ineffective. The goal is to provide a medium for expression that bypasses words, thus helping the individual connect with emotions injected into the core of various personal experiences.

VFR is a national veteran-owned and veteran-operated organization treating Veterans, first responders, and their families and caretakers, who are dealing with substance use and mental health issues. Since June of 2018, VFR and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) have partnered together to enhance Veterans’ access to mental health and substance abuse services to reduce suicide.

Mercedes Dericho, founder of OAD Healthcare, stated “I strongly believe that there is a relationship between creative expression and healing. OAD Healthcare is helping military Veterans discover the healing powers of the arts and we are proud to partner with VFR Healthcare.”

Eric Golnick, CEO of VFR (Veteran & First Responder) Healthcare, added “we are extremely excited to be working with Mercedes and the OAD Healthcare team. We believe OAD Healthcare will further enhance our service offerings and assist in improving the overall mental health of the Veterans we serve.”

About VFR Healthcare

VFR (Veteran & First Responder) Healthcare, the sister company of Strive Health, is a veteran-owned and operated organization that is committed to increasing the access to, and quality of, outpatient addiction and mental health treatment for Veterans, First Responders, and their families. All Strive centers proudly serve VFR Healthcare and offer a wide range of confidential, trauma-informed outpatient treatment programs and services for adults and adolescents suffering from Substance Use Disorder and/or co-occurring mental health conditions, including intensive outpatient programs, outpatient programs, and early intervention services.

About Operation Art District

Operation Art District Healthcare’s (OAD) mission is to improve the overall mental health of military Veterans by increasing the cognitive and social functions of military Veterans suffering from and/or diagnosed with a mental illness such as PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Bi-Polar disorder and/or sexual trauma, by providing a combination of tradition mental health treatment and creative arts therapy in the areas of photography, painting, creative writing/poetry, sculpting, yoga and much more. OAD’s mission is to improve and restore a sense of personal well-being. With art therapy being the center of our treatment, OAD’s creative arts therapy programs fosters self-awareness, social skills and increases the ability for patients to manage their symptoms. Artistic self-expression aids in self-discovery which many Veterans suffering from invisible disabilities such as PTSD, Depression and Anxiety have lost a sense of personal wellbeing.

Legacy Oaks of Sacramento Hosts Free Memory Care Workshops

Staff member and resident looking at photos and tools.

Legacy Oaks of Sacramento team member and resident engaging. Life engagement is one of the 5 directional paths of the Montessori Moments in Time program.

We understand the challenges you face and know that it is essential for you to have support, education, and an understanding of how important it is to take care of yourself.

Currently under the management of Meridian Senior Living (Meridian), Legacy Oaks of Sacramento Assisted Living and Memory Care (Legacy Oaks) is hosting Caregiver Café, a monthly workshop founded on principles from Meridian’s exclusive memory care program. These monthly workshops are vital as the global impact of dementia is staggering. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as of 2015 there were 9.9 million new cases world-wide with one diagnosed every 3 seconds. With that in mind, all of us will be affected by Alzheimer’s in one way or another. Understanding the disease has become increasingly important in helping afflicted family members and loved ones experience better outcomes.

Caregiver Café is based on Montessori Moments in Time (MMIT), Meridian’s distinctive memory care programming, to offer families and caregivers strategies to cope with challenging times. The goals of MMIT at Legacy Oaks are to enhance living for those with memory challenges by using the five directional paths. Each directional path has the resident and family in mind to encourage independence and helps deal with the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. These paths include Family Connections, Health and Wellness, Dining Experience, Life Engagement, and Team Promise. Family Connections focus on the well-being of our families through social gatherings, volunteer opportunities, support, and education. Health and Wellness is based on providing satisfying experiences, promoting independence, and encouraging positive behavior while maintaining respect and dignity. The Dining Experience leverages meals as a time to reminisce, create new memories, maximize independence, and promote socializing, all in an inviting environment. Life Engagement includes scheduled programs that support the whole person allowing residents to function at their highest potential, giving them a sense of purpose and overall well-being. Team Promise focuses on developing care partnerships through ongoing education and training.

“When someone in the family has dementia, it changes everything,” states Sue Johnston, VP Program Development. “We understand the challenges you face and know that it is essential for you to have support, education, and an understanding of how important it is to take care of yourself.”

The Caregiver Café program offers an opportunity for caregivers of loved ones who suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia to participate in a forum to ask questions while being surrounded by others going through their same situation. Legacy Oak’s onsite experts serve as a resource to provide support for the caregivers and to help them better understand their loved one’s condition. Caregiver Cafés are held on the last Wednesday of every month from 6pm-7pm at Legacy Oaks located at 1922 Morse Avenue in Sacramento, CA. Complimentary coffee and snacks are provided. Upcoming Caregiver Café topics include: Alive Inside featuring a Music and Memory Program on October 30th and Tips for the Holidays on November 27th.

Since workshop space is limited, interested participants should call (916) 822-7328 to R.S.V.P. at least one day before the event. For more information about Legacy Oaks, visit: legacyoaksofsacramento.com.

2020 iaedp™ Symposium Offers Self-Expression through Art Competition

“The art submissions are as unique as the art competition itself,” says Blanche Williams, MS and Director of International Development at the iaedp™ Foundation. “The artists’ allow outsiders to see inside their emotional selves.”

Studies involving eating disorders have revealed that emotional repression is linked to higher reports of medical challenges. Through a unique art competition sponsored annually by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™), artists are given the opportunity of self-expression by pushing the boundaries of form, structure and identity through visual, 3-dimensional and mixed media as well as poetry, spoken word and dance/performance.

The art competition is themed is “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” and held during the annual iaedp™ Symposium. At next year’s conference in Orlando at the Omni at ChampionsGate, March 26-29, the top five art finalists are showcased and the winner is revealed. Entries are currently being accepted through December 15, 2019.

“Imagine Me Beyond What You See” originally was designed to promote a healthy awareness and acceptance of body images. That focus has been nurtured over the 10-year span that the special art competition has been conducted. The art contest is open to everyone; however, iaedp™ asks treatment centers and private practices with art therapists to work with patients to provide entries.

“The art submissions are as unique as the art competition itself,” says Blanche Williams, MS and Director of International Development at the iaedp™ Foundation. “The artists’ allow outsiders to see inside their emotional selves. Each contest entry communicates powerful themes and reveals courageous individuals.”

Entries must include a 300-word description/inspiration along with a two to three sentence biography of the artist or group. A list of materials/content must be provided along with a submission of four photos of the art form in high (300+) resolution jpeg format that shows at least four different angles. Photos will be enlarged, so quality is important. Poetry and/or spoken word should be submitted in writing and/or one to two minute You Tube video link. Dance/performance must be submitted in one to two minute You Tube video link. All entries require signing an artist release.

The Lead Sponsorship for the 2020 “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” is still open for organizations which are interested in helping to support the competition. For more details contact blanche@iaedp.com.

The “Imagine Me Beyond What You See” awards ceremony, scheduled during the 2020 iaedp™ Symposium, will include the Professionals’ Choice Award, which is selected through voting by iaedp™ membership, 2020 Symposium attendees and the general public.

Past year Imagine Me contest entries and winners can be seen by visiting: http://www.iaedp.com/imagine-me/ and http://membershare.iaedp.com/category/members/memberimagineme/. For additional information about the Imagine Me art competition, including how to enter, contact Blanche@iaedp.com.

School Districts Partnering with Gaggle Saved More Than 700 Students from Suicide in 2018-19

News Image

“Gaggle triggered additional help for the students whom we may have otherwise missed,” said Dr. Melissa Williams-Scott, Executive Director of Information Systems at Dickinson ISD. “We’ve been very pleased with our investment in Gaggle.”

From self-harm to violence towards others to the sharing of nudity and sexual content, K-12 students are engaging in an alarming number of dangerous behaviors, and they are leaving evidence of this behavior in their online activity within Google’s G Suite, Microsoft Office 365 and the Canvas learning management system. According to a new national student safety report from Gaggle, The State of Student Safety Through the Gaggle Lens, from July 2018 through June 2019, Gaggle safety experts identified nearly 14,000 incidents revealing an imminent threat to a student’s life or well-being — and more than 40 percent of these happened outside of school hours.

“With over 100,000 safety issues observed among Gaggle’s nearly 5 million users in 2018-19 — including nearly 13,000 cases deemed serious enough to warrant immediate action — it’s clear that K-12 leaders have their work cut out for them in keeping students safe,” said Jeff Patterson, Gaggle CEO. “While students may appear to be fine at school, they often express their thoughts and feelings more freely online. School leaders might never know about students’ cries for help unless they have visibility into their use of school-issued digital tools.”

During the 2018-19 school year, Gaggle reported:

  • 52,000 references to suicide or self-harm in students’ online activity. Of these, more than 6,000 were serious enough to merit immediate attention by the district, which resulted in more than 700 lives saved.
  • 34,000 references of violence toward others. Of these, more than 1,600 warranted an immediate call to prevent a potential incident.
  • 15,000 examples of nudity or sexual content, of which 5,100 required immediate action.

These figures come from Gaggle’s safety management solution, which uses a combination of artificial intelligence and trained safety experts to help K-12 districts proactively ensure the safety and well-being of all students. During the 2018/19 academic school year, Gaggle analyzed and viewed over 3.9 billion items of which 70 million items were reviewed for suspicious content. Gaggle is committed to keeping students safe by scanning school accounts for harmful content. They then alert school officials when students show signs of self-harm, depression, thoughts of suicide, substance abuse, cyberbullying, credible threats of violence against others, or other harmful situations.

Before implementing Gaggle, Dickinson Independent School District (DISD) was struggling with encryption and content filter challenges related to its use of Google and G Suite for Education, the latter of which is used for both student and staff communication and collaboration. Drawn in by Gaggle’s 24/7/365 online guarantee and the way it could quickly identify, act on, and alert the district of potential problems, DISD implemented the platform in August of 2018. During the platform’s first year in use, the district caught numerous potential problems that ranged from seemingly innocent sentences to full-blown emergencies—and everything in between.

“Gaggle triggered additional help for the students whom we may have otherwise missed,” said Dr. Melissa Williams-Scott, Executive Director of Information Systems at Dickinson ISD. “We’ve been very pleased with our investment in Gaggle, which is basically like having your own personal ‘911’ system specifically for your district.”

The State of Student Safety Through the Gaggle Lens report is available at https://pages.gaggle.net/18-19-safetyreport/.

About Gaggle| http://www.gaggle.net

Since 1999, Gaggle has been the leader in helping K-12 districts manage student safety on school-provided technology. Using a robust combination of both artificial intelligence and trained safety experts, the safety solution proactively assists districts 24/7/365 in the prevention of student suicide, bullying, inappropriate behaviors, school violence, and other harmful situations. Most importantly, Gaggle continues to help hundreds of districts avoid tragedies and save lives, while also protecting their liability. In the 2018-19 academic year, Gaggle has helped districts save the lives of more than 700 students who were planning or actually attempting suicide.
