News Image

Oak Street Health, a network of primary care centers that delivers value-based care to adults on Medicare, announced the launch of its Fellowship for Value-Based Care Leadership, in partnership with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

The fellowship is designed to integrate medical training with advanced principles of value-based care and concepts to become an effective leader. Successful completion of the 24-month program results in a sponsored Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and consideration for a clinical leadership role with Oak Street Health.

The program begins in July 2020 and is based in Chicago. The selected fellows will have the unique opportunity to both provide patient care and rotate through three of Oak Street Health’s core business units: Clinical Quality, where they will collaborate with clinical leaders to ensure consistency in operation and create a high-quality patient experience; Care Navigation, where they will foster external relationships and partnerships to support care teams and patients across the entire patient lifecycle; and Population Health, where they will build interventions that contribute to a higher-quality and more cost-effective care delivery organization.

Fellows will spend six months in each business unit, three months in an elective rotation, and a final three months at an Oak Street Health center as interim Medical Director for hands-on training and experience. Throughout the entire program, fellows will be mentored by an Oak Street Health Senior Medical Director. Fellows will also complete the requirements to earn an MBA at the Kellogg School of Management, including core coursework and electives focused on the intricacies of the public-private nature of healthcare.

“Oak Street Health’s mission is to rebuild healthcare as it should be, and our providers are deeply committed to achieving that goal,” said Dr. Griffin Myers, Oak Street Health co-founder and Chief Medical Officer. “We’re thrilled to launch our Fellowship for Value-Based Care Leadership in partnership with the Kellogg School of Management. The program offers unprecedented access and experience for physicians to learn how to be an effective leader, through both clinical and business training, in a value-based care environment. We look forward to meeting and training future clinical leaders.”

“At Kellogg, we are always searching for ways to enable our students to have an impact on the business of healthcare,” said Professor Craig Garthwaite, faculty director of Healthcare at Kellogg. “Oak Street Health was a natural partner as an organization that is creating a sustainable business model to serve a vital need for an underserved community. We are excited to help train the next generation of leaders in this effort.”

Oak Street Health is currently seeking applications for its fellowship. A New Approach for People Who Have Experienced Trauma

https://www.prweb.com/

Over 50 Worksheets for the Treatment of PTSD

Practical tools for hard to treat problems like impulsivity, sexual dysfunction, hallucinations, and memory issues.

According to psychologist Tijana Mandic, trauma has become the “new normal” for people in every society. She explains, “The world is being defined by uncertainties, contradictions, complexities, and chaos,” and where trauma was once considered a rare human experience, modern psychology has now expanded the concept of trauma to include a wide variety of life-changing events. Dr. Mandic notes that “nearly every one of us will experience at least a mild trauma at some time during our lives.” Yet, most of us are not taught the tools to recover from trauma.

Dr. Mandic brings decades of experience to her thoughtful work. Her background has included treating trauma victims ranging from refugees of war to victims of natural disasters and political turmoil. While alleviating symptoms is important, Dr. Mandic believes that this is just the first step in helping people with trauma. Her workbook takes people on a journey from overcoming their symptoms to developing resiliency skills that will help them deal with additional life problems, enabling them to open themselves to daily experiences of happiness and fulfillment.

The workbook has been hailed as a “master-class” for therapists treating clients with PTSD, but also as a toolbox of highly practical techniques. The workbook provides over 50 practical worksheets and exercises to treat a wide variety of problems that are often overlooked or deemed too complex for treatment, including: handling impulsive behaviors, understanding the effect of trauma on memory, dealing with hallucinations, rebuilding trust, and much more. The book provides tools to help clients pursue happiness in their lives, develop closer relationships with their loved ones, and discover joy and balance.

The workbook is being sold at major online retailers as well as CounselingStore.com, where along with their paperback copy, readers can get immediate access to a digital version of the book to print out the exercises.

Dr. Mandic also gives workshops around the world on treating people with trauma as well as overcoming creative blocks.

“Overcoming PTSD” is published by Between Sessions Resources, a leader in providing practical tools for clinicians to use with their clients.

In her new role, Ornstein will oversee comprehensive medical and psychiatric care provided to adolescent patients at all levels of care. She will also provide leadership and guidance to clinical staff and work cross-functionally with a variety of teams throughout the organization to ensure positive outcomes and eliminate barriers to best-practice care. As a researcher with more than 25 published works, Ornstein hopes to carry on that work as priorities allow.

“Dr. Ornstein’s expertise in eating disorder research and treatment, alongside her unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality care to all patients, regardless of age, gender or socioeconomic status, made her a natural fit to lead our Durham adolescent medical team,” said Stacie McEntyre, founder and CEO of Veritas Collaborative.

With a passion for the healthcare needs of teenagers, Ornstein completed her residency in pediatrics and began a fellowship in adolescent medicine at what is now Cohen Children’s Medical Center – Northwell Health. Following her fellowship, Ornstein stayed on the team as an attending physician for six years. Her multifaceted career equips her well for the road ahead.

“Dr. Ornstein is an extraordinary addition to our team of expert physicians, a clinician-scholar who brings with her knowledge and skills earned over two decades of scholarly publications and subspecialty clinical experience in the field of eating disorders. Ornstein began her role as medical director at Veritas Collaborative’s Child & Adolescent Hospital in Durham, N.C. in September 2019 and already has plans for building upon the Veritas mission to drive the standard of care in eating disorder treatment.

“Working as part of the Veritas Collaborative team is more than a job shift for me. It’s a merging of my multiple passions for adolescent medical care, eating disorder recovery, and forward-thinking leadership,” said Ornstein. “It is extremely gratifying to help create a recovery journey using the skills I’ve honed throughout my professional career, and I’m looking forward to making a positive impact.”

PMB Positively Impacts Healthcare in the Underserved Heart of California’s Imperial Valley

News Image

PMB’s ambulatory care strategy expertise, partnership culture and agility in navigating through a highly-complex New Markets Tax Credit financing structure allows Clinicas to continue our mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve…

PMB, one of the nation’s leading real estate developers and owners across the continuum of care, is pleased to announce the completion of their newest project, Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo’s El Centro Health Center (ECHC), in the heart of California’s Imperial Valley.

Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), needed more than a typical medical office building – it has a special purpose and story for how it came to be. It’s important to understand the dynamics of the environment surrounding this new healthcare facility located in El Centro, Calif., halfway between San Diego and Arizona, just 12 miles north of the Mexico border. The fabric of the community is based on the long-standing agricultural landscape throughout the area and the workers that support it, half of the community to be exact. El Centro is situated within Imperial County, a geographically isolated region in California’s vast southeastern desert. It has a constant flow of bi-national agricultural workers, tourists and residents crossing the nearby U.S./Mexico border daily. Imperial County ranks 57th out of 57 California counties for health factors overall, with a severe shortage of medical, dental, and mental health providers. Its social and economic demographics contribute to many barriers when trying to access health care services. Given its population of migrant and seasonal labor, Imperial County continually has the highest unemployment rate in California. As of June 2019, Imperial County’s unemployment rate was 18.6 percent vs. 3.7 percent in the United States overall. (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Labor Force http://www.bls.gov/lau/data.htm accessed 8/2019) There is also a deficit in facilities for local students to complete their medical training and internship programs, further adding to the medical provider shortage.

Through the partnership with Clinicas, PMB secured an off-market site located within a larger retail setting with tremendous access and visibility. PMB led the development of the new two-story, 45,000 square foot outpatient care center which is the new face of health and wellness in the Imperial Valley. The Project advanced Clinicas’ mission to expand healthcare access, enhance preventative and clinical services and bolster training and education to the population of the Imperial Valley.

Yvonne Bell, CEO of Clinicas de Salud de Pueblo noted that, “Clinicas partnered with PMB to expand services, improve access and redefine the patient experience in the Imperial Valley. PMB’s ambulatory care strategy expertise, partnership culture and agility in navigating through a highly-complex New Markets Tax Credit financing structure allows Clinicas to continue our mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve through providing access to excellent care, available to all.”

The ultimate financing structure was as unique as the project itself, as traditional equity and debt financing was limited due to the non-traditional market, demographics and Clinicas unique FQHC reimbursement structure and financial profile. As a result, PMB analyzed many different financing structures and identified the Federal New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) program as the most beneficial financing construct for Clinicas. PMB received a $24,500,000 Qualified Equity Investment allocation from three Community Development Entities through the Federal New Markets Tax Credit program. One hundred percent of the New Markets Tax Credit benefit, which netted $4.3 million, was allocated to Clinicas which was used to fund fixtures, furniture and equipment in the facility.

“The larger, new healthcare center has enabled Clinicas to increase patient capacity by 85 percent, create 152 new permanent jobs, and expand its healthcare services and specialties,” says Ben Ryan, PMB Partner and CFO. “Most importantly, the new facility is helping Clinicas deliver on their mission and improving local residents’ access to the highest quality healthcare.”

With the increased capacity the new clinic is accepting patients for adult medicine, behavioral health, dentistry, pediatrics, podiatry, neurology, radiology, women’s health, 3D-4D OBGYN ultrasounds, and has expanded the medical department as well as adding a new pharmacy, and optometry services. These new services have increased patient access to specialty services and enhances the integrated care system that addresses multiple, diverse needs at a single facility and will lead to a much more efficient, effective, comprehensive, patient‐centered model of care. The new facility will also house the El Centro Clinic in addition to Clinicas’ administrative staff.

The new clinic is designed to complement and embrace the local geography and environment. The concrete, tilt-wall building reacts to the natural geography and climate of the area and includes specially designed solar shading at the east, west and southern exposures. The site also utilizes a local, drought tolerant plant palette that is harmonious with the contemporary building design. Nadel Architects, ranked amongst the top architectural firms in the United States, provided building architectural services. Javier Diaz Architects, who provides architectural services to the Imperial Valley and San Diego County, provided tenant architectural services and San Diego-based Pacific Building Group, one of the region’s leading general contracting firms, served as the General Contractor.

Partnership for Children’s Mental Health, a Center Focused on Improving the Youth Mental Health System in Colorado

The Quad Innovation Partnership (QIP), the only higher education partnership of its kind in the United States, is pleased to announce new work with Partners for Children’s Mental Health (PCMH), a center supported by Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado Department of Psychiatry.

PCMH operates as across-system resource, training, and implementation hub in order to ultimately increase capacity, access, and quality of youth mental health services in Colorado. It works with partners across the state to identify, scale, and sustain best practices to help connect youth and families to effective mental health treatment and, ultimately, save lives.

One of PCMH’s key action items is school-based mental health care and suicide prevention. Students from QIP will conduct and deliver interdisciplinary research to assess best practice suicide prevention programs that address key risk factors among elementary and middle school students in Colorado. PCMH currently offers support to high schools; the project will help PCMH expand support to elementary and middle school students statewide.

“The Quad works on many important initiatives that impact our communities and this initiative with Partners for Children’s Mental Health is one of the most critical items our organization has been a part of,” said Jake Eichengreen, Executive Director of the Quad Innovation Partnership. “As noted by PCMH, suicide is the #1 cause of death among Colorado youth ages 10-24. This is a massive problem and we have assembled a dedicated team to produce outcomes for PCMH that address real need and will strengthen their essential work.”

QIP is comprised of students, staff and faculty from Colorado College, Pikes Peak Community College, University of Colorado Colorado Springs and the US Air Force Academy. This diverse group delivers professional-grade recommendations, tactics and solutions for a varied array of clients, covering a wide range of initiatives and issues that impact the lives of people in southern Colorado and the nation.

“The Quad’s recommendations will be critical to our efforts to provide a scalable, low-cost suicide prevention package to schools across Colorado,” said Shannon Van Deman, Executive Director of Partners for Children’s Mental Health and Vice President of the Pediatric Mental Health Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado. “The Quad is recognized as a leader tackling some of the biggest challenges facing our state. We’re excited to partner with them to create real impact for youth and families.”

The project was made possible through the generosity of Mark and Shannon Breuer and their family, who are dedicated to supporting the most effective initiatives in expanding behavioral health access, reducing youth suicide, and positively impacting our community’s children and families.

About the Quad Innovation Partnership: A collaborative initiative of Colorado College, Pikes Peak Community College, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the United States Air Force Academy[1], the Quad deepens the ability of graduates to innovate within professional settings in the Pikes Peak Region. As the only initiative combining the capacities, students and faculty of a private liberal arts college, a regional community college, a state research university and a US service academy in the United States, the Quad’s value is built on the diversity of institutions it represents. All projects the Quad facilitates leverage the combined capacities of these four institutions in order to work together to discover, validate and initiate solutions for public, private and philanthropic clients
