Study Reveals the Appeal of Feeling-Sharers

People who are emotionally expressive possess more positive and healthy traits than people who are reserved.

The “strong, expressive” types actually have more guts than the so-called “strong, silent” types.

When you open up to someone, you create an instant rapport, because you are connecting with the person on a much deeper level.

“Strong, silent” types with their “stiff upper lips” possess an undeniable allure. That’s why it’s the hallmark of much-loved, fictional British characters, like James Bond and Sherlock Holmes, and, let’s face it, pretty much every well-known Brit. After all, what’s not to admire about calm stoicism, even in the most perilous and dire of situations? It’s certainly more attractive than an adult temper tantrum. Nonetheless, recent research from Queendom.com indicates that people who are comfortable talking about their feelings are not just emotional. They possess other unique personality traits that can actually make them more affable than their more reserved counterparts.

Reviewing data from 1,162 people who took Queendom’s Big Five Personality Test, researchers compared the psychological profile of people who regularly talk about their feelings, and those who avoid it at all costs. Here’s how the two groups scored on different personality traits:

(Note: Scores range on a scale from 0 to 100. A high score indicates that the trait is a predominant aspect of the group’s collective personality. A moderate score suggests that the trait only manifests under certain circumstances, while a low score is reflective of a dormant or underdeveloped trait.).

COMFORT WITH SELF-DISCLOSURE:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 72

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 31

SOCIABILITY:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 56

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 37

EXTROVERSION:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 61

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 38

WILLINGNESS TO TRUST OTHERS:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 63

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 39

AUTHENTICITY:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 73

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 58

LIKEABILITY:

KINDNESS:

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 55

SELF-CONFIDENCE:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 73

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 57

ASSERTIVENESS:

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 48

OPTIMISM:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 65

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 48

LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 65

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 50

“We are often in awe of people who remain stoic in intense situations, but there is much to be admired about people who express their emotions,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests, the parent company of Queendom. “In order to share your feelings, you have to allow yourself to be emotionally ‘exposed’; you have to accept the potential for rejection and even mockery. That means it takes a lot of guts to share your feelings. That’s also the reason why so many people keep their feelings, as well as their problems, to themselves. They think it will make them appear weak. The irony, however, is that you have be strong in order to be vulnerable.”

“When you open up to someone, you create an instant rapport, because you are connecting with the person on a much deeper level. We all have feelings. We all go through difficult times. This is why, as our study revealed, emotionally expressive people are so likeable – because they are real. They are their true selves, in all their vulnerability, yet still amazingly confident. So while ‘strong, silent’ types do have a certain allure, emotionally expressive people have a certain warmth and charm that is more likely to endear them to others.”

Into the Summit for Mental Health and Wellness 2019 – A Caving Expedition to Raise Funds to Support Canadian Veterans and their Families

The Third Annual Into the Summit for Mental Health and Wellness fundraising initiative is coming up this weekend. Organized by the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Foundation in partnership with Canmore Cave Tours, this year a team of volunteers, members of the military and caving experts will descent into Rat’s Nest Cave – to heighten awareness and raise funds for veterans and their families suffering for the devastating consequences of PTSD and other forms of mental illness.

On Sunday November 10, 2019, campaign participants will venture into the Rat’s Nest Cave – a wild, undeveloped cave under Grotto Mountain near Canmore, Alberta. Formally recognized as one of Canada’s Historic Places in 1987, the cave was once home to a rich variety of animal species. At over 4km long, Rat’s Nest is one of the longest caves in Canada. Exploring this cave involves climbing, crawling, sliding, wiggling and squeezing through water-worn passages past ancient cave formations and bones.

All of the 32 participants are raising funds to join this adventure. Proceeds will be used to fund non-clinical therapies for military veterans and their families. Over $125,000 was raised from the 2016 and 2017 campaigns – during which participants climbed to the summits of Mount Buller and Mount Farquhar in Kananaskis County. One woman’s journey from severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to a life lived abundantly

“Kerry is a testament that if one dedicates themselves to treatment; one can overcome this dreadful disease in an overwhelming fashion. I am immensely proud of her progress along with her commitment to disseminate her knowledge for the benefit of others suffering from OCD.”

The books author, Kerry Osborn, is a mental health/OCD advocate, mental health blogger, public speaker, writer and founder of The Obsessive Outsiders digital ‘mentally misunderstood’ movement. Osborn is a long time sufferer of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which set in as a young adult with no genetic history of mental illness.

Kerry Alayne Osborn lived a completely normal life until the sudden onset of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) at the age of seventeen. Her charmed life turned upside down as her new diagnosis of OCD set in, leaving her life spinning out of control. While trying to live a normal life, as she battled through the maze of OCD, she found her OCD mind had different plans. Unlike the common stigma of OCD, Kerry found herself with a case of OCD that is the exact opposite of the known ‘perfectionism’, and ‘cleanliness’ oriented disorder.

Several dark years later, bound in the chains of OCD, the outsider found herself on a leather couch in a manic state, sitting across from the one therapist who would go on to mentor her to live an abundant life. Once confined to the isolation of her dorm room with no friends, a loss of identity, and betrayal of her own mind, Kerry pushed through to break the foundation of her dire belief system in OCD.

Passing through the waiting rooms of many untargeted therapists, Osborn finally found Jim Sterner, LMFT and enrolled in The Gateway Institute’s Intensive Therapy Program in 2010. It was during the program Kerry initially realized the disconnection of her magical thinking OCD. Osborn has worked for years to live a normal life credited to behavioral therapy and perseverance. Jim Sterner’s reflection on his work with Kerry over the years is profound, stating, “Coming from unimaginable depths of OCD, Kerry’s entire life was completely entangled in her intrusive thoughts, and almost every hour of every day was committed to neutralizing her fears and anxiety through hundreds of compulsions. After committing herself to intensive OCD treatment, Kerry has risen to improbable heights. Not only has she learned to live free of OCD, she has written a beautiful memoir about her personal journey, and is leading a website that has reached thousands of people that are continuously learning and benefiting from her experience. Kerry is a testament that if one dedicates themselves to treatment; one can overcome this dreadful disease in an overwhelming fashion. I am immensely proud of her progress along with her commitment to disseminate her knowledge for the benefit of others suffering from OCD.”

As Kerry slowly immersed back into living life again, she noticed the lack of patient-to-patient memoirs on the market demonstrating living a successful life after the worst of OCD. She decided to create the book of hope she wished she had found during her years of suffering. Osborn credits the book to being the friend she never had for other OCD sufferers to feel less alone and see first-hand that with the proper therapy, tools and perseverance, one can absolutely live an abundant life amidst Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, in a state of ongoing OCD Recovery.

Kerry’s infectious, unapologetic, and refreshing voice doesn’t hold back. In her book, The Obsessive Outsider, she shares her journey, giving sound advice on how to tangibly do something about OCD. Putting the good, bad and the ugly on display for the world, she chooses to be a face for the misunderstood disorder that almost cost her everything. Kerry is devoted to proving that a life in recovery from the worst of OCD is possible, given the right tools and perseverance.

The Obsessive Outsider is now available to be purchased on Amazon in both print & Kindle versions internationally, Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble, Nook, Kobo, Kobo Plus, Tolino, Baker & Taylor, Scribd, 24 Symbols, OverDrive, Bibliotheca, Hoopla, !ndigo, Angus & Robertson. The book is also available via ISBN on IngramSpark for library and bookstore purchases.

How Pet Therapy Changed One Man’s Life and Career — Navy Vet’s dog inspired the brand, Beast & Buckle

“I created Beast & Buckle products because I love my dog more than anything in the entire world,” he said. “I wanted him to have something that was safe and comfortable and high-quality but I also really wanted something that would reflect his personality because he’s such a fun little guy.”

There’s a special bond between dogs and their human caretakers that goes beyond companionship and loyalty. For one dog owner turned entrepreneur, the one-of-a-kind relationship was so heartfelt, it saved his life.

“Without Clark, I don’t know if I’d still be here. The pain of my father’s suicide and my own battle with depression took a huge toll on me, one with which I constantly and severely struggled. Clark gave me a new lease on life – I had a reason to wake up every day and smile. He is that important to me and that impactful on my life.”

Stew Anderson is the “human” co-founder of Beast & Buckle along with his “furry four-legged” co-founder, a French bulldog named Clark. For Anderson, this business venture wouldn’t be possible without Clark. Their unshakeable bond began before creating the dog accessory line.

In 2016, Anderson’s world turned upside-down when his father passed away. The next year plunged him into a deep depression. Looking for ways to help him lift his spirits, his mother and sister suggested he get a dog. Although Anderson was always a dog lover, he didn’t have many opportunities in the past to own one with his time in the Navy followed by jobs involving travel.

His sister first introduced him to Clark through his puppy photo, and Anderson knew right away that the little gray Frenchie was the best friend for whom he’d been searching. Meeting and bringing Clark home turned out to the best life decision that even changed his whole career trajectory to design Beast & Buckle’s flagship harness collection.

“I created Beast & Buckle products because I love my dog more than anything in the entire world,” he said. “I wanted him to have something that was safe and comfortable and high-quality but I also really wanted something that would reflect his personality because he’s such a fun little guy.”

While few dog owners will embark on a journey like Anderson’s, scientific studies are uncovering the multiple benefits animals have on humans. Evidence shows how pets can improve mental health and physical factors such as lower blood pressure.

Anderson is a shining example of how animal therapy has the power to transform. With his darkest days behind him, this co-founder is ready to empower others on two and four legs.

About: Beast & Buckle creates stylish and premium quality reversible dog harnesses, leashes and accessories for your four-legged friend. With designs to match the likes of any dog owner or occasion such as Donut, Mimosa, Baseball, Wine, Pizza and more, the core values of this brand are that dogs are on this planet to share love in the world with their human and vice versa. Beast & Buckle is committed to supporting the great organizations that help dogs and humans lead great lives through our “10% Promise.” Every year, Beast & Buckle donates 10% of profits to charities supporting animals.

Leading Community Organizations Join to Present “The Full Case for NY Surrogacy Reform”

Leading Community Organizations Join to Present “The Full Case for NY Surrogacy Reform”

“We put together a program to offer medical, legal, ethical and historical perspectives on the debate surrounding the NY surrogacy reform…”

On Friday, November 8th, 2019, leading community organizations are holding in New York City an unprecedented event where the core ethical issues associated with surrogacy legislation will be tackled in a frank and thorough way. The co-sponsors for this event include Men Having Babies, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, Family Equality Council, Equality NY, Stonewall Democrats of NYC, and The Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys.

The Child Parent Security Act (CPSA), which will reverse the ban on compensated surrogacy in New York State, was passed by the NY Senate earlier this year, and is likely to come up for a vote in the Assembly in the 2020 legislative session.

Several organizations that support the reform have assembled more than 30 speakers to help answer core questions such as: how do you justify the payment of compensation to gestational carriers, and what is this compensation for? What does academic research show about medical and psychological outcomes for the parties involved? What do medical, psychological, and legal experts recommend? How do surrogates and their families feel about the proposed bill? And what is the position of leading human rights organizations?

“While we think it is the most comprehensive and thoughtful surrogacy legislation ever drafted, the CPSA also faced criticism and claims that not enough discussion has taken place about ethical concerns,” said Ron Poole-Dayan, the Executive Director of Men Having Babies, an organization that offers education and financial assistance to thousands of prospective gay fathers. “Therefore, we put together a program to offer medical, legal, ethical and historical perspectives on this debate, a review of relevant research findings, and a thorough analysis of how we think the proposed surrogacy legislation addresses core ethical issues & essential best practices,” he said.

“We know firsthand how complicated gestational surrogacy can be when advocating for this family building option with lawmakers,” said Barbara Collura, the President and CEO of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. “This forum will be an excellent opportunity to take an in-depth look at the impact of current and proposed policy in New York.”

Among the speakers are several surrogates, their young adult children, children born through surrogacy, academic researchers, representatives of community organizations and international human rights organizations, and leading legal, mental health and medical experts.

Organizers are inviting lawmakers, community activists, professionals, academicians, students, parents and prospective parents to listen and offer feedback. More than 100 people already registered to attend.

Senator Brad Hoylman, who led the approval of the CPSA in the NY Senate, said: “The Trump Administration recently announced new rules to allow adoption agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ parents. For many in the LGBTQ community, gestational surrogacy could be the only option to start a family. Yet for decades, families like mine have had to travel out-of-state for gestational surrogacy. It’s long past time New York ends the antiquated ban on gestational surrogacy so LGBTQ couples and people experiencing infertility can build their families here at home. I’m grateful to Men Having Babies for hosting this important event, and I’m committed to passing my bill to legalize gestational surrogacy in this year’s legislative session.”

The program will take place Friday, November 8th 4:00 to 8:00pm, at the Stewart Hotel, 371 Seventh Ave, New York City, NY 10001.

Go to menhavingbabies.org/advocacy/forum/ny/ for registration and additional information.

Press inquiries: Contact Shelly Marsh, Marketing Director of Men Having Babies shelly(at)menhavingbabies.org / 714-515-9602. Interviews with community organization representatives, experts, surrogates, and parents can be arranged by request.

Connie A. Baker Licensed Professional Counselor offers Online Support Group to Help Wide Spectrum of Religious Abuse Survivors

This group is a resource for those who have experienced religious abuse, be it psychological, verbal, sexual or financial. With authenticity, openness, and careful consideration of many different faith traditions, Connie provides a safe place to process and build community with other survivors

Connie A. Baker, MA, LPC announces an online Facebook support group that centers on the healing and recovery of those who have been traumatized by religion and religious leaders. Through personal stories, interaction among its members, polls, memes, discussions, humor and Connie’s live broadcasts, this Facebook group – Overcoming Religious Abuse Community – provides support, community, education, hope and healing to spiritual abuse survivors.

She leads this group from the perspective of a professional therapist who teaches and counsels survivors, and from her own perspective from being a survivor of religious abuse. “When I went through horrible religious abuse back in 1990, I was completely confused and without resources to get clarity and healing. I never want anyone to go through what I did after abuse. This group and my book “Traumatized by Religious Abuse: Courage, Hope and Freedom for Survivors” are the resources I needed back then and didn’t have.”

“Traumatic wounds suffered in a place that should represent safety, security, and comfort can be some of the most confusing wounds of all,” Baker says.

This group is a resource for those who have experienced religious abuse, be it psychological, verbal, sexual or financial. With authenticity, openness, and careful consideration of many different faith traditions, Connie provides a safe place to process and build community with other survivors.

Discussions in Overcoming Religious Abuse Community revolve around the many questions survivors ask:

How did this happen to me?

How were power and control used to hurt and manipulate me?

What were the hallmark characteristics of the abusive leaders and abusive religious cultures that I experienced?

What were the implicit and subtle messages used by my abusers?

What were the emotional, mental and existential damages after abuse?

How can I recover and heal??

In this group, Connie A Baker discusses how religious ideas are often used to manipulate followers and how fear, shame, guilt and superstition can be leveraged for control. Bringing her experience and training to this group, her goal is to see survivors heal and thrive!

Sedation Dentistry of Charleston Provides Virtually Painless Dentistry to Charleston, SC with IV Sedation

Dr. Robert Carimi, Sedation Dentist in Charleston, SC

Dr. Robert Carimi Provides Virtually Painless Dentistry through IV Sedation in Charleston, SC

IV sedation offers complete relaxation, helping patients feel as though they slept through the entire visit.

Dr. Robert Carimi of Sedation Dentistry of Charleston helps ease patient dental anxiety and achieve nearly painless dentistry through IV sedation. Because administration requires additional training, many general dentists do not become certified to offer sedation dentistry. However, Dr. Carimi has undergone extensive hospital training to receive the certification needed to administer IV sedation at his Charleston, SC practice. Additionally, he and his team regularly attend continuing education courses to stay at the leading edge of sedation dentistry.

Dental anxiety causes millions of Americans to avoid visits to the dentist, often for years at a time. Dental anxiety can arise from a variety of concerns, including worries of pain or a negative previous dental experience. IV sedation provides significant relief for patients who experience dental anxiety.

Delivered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation works quickly. It leaves patients with little to no memory of the procedure, allowing patients to experience virtually painless dentistry. Because it is administered intravenously, Dr. Carimi can administer other medication through the IV as well when needed. IV sedation offers complete relaxation, helping patients feel as though they slept through the entire visit. After IV sedation, patients will require a ride home to ensure their complete safety.

Dr. Carimi works carefully with every patient to confirm that they are suitable for IV sedation before moving forward. If IV sedation is not the best option, he offers additional sedation dentistry options such as oral sedation and nitrous oxide.

Those looking to experience painless dentistry in Charleston, SC or surrounding areas are welcome to contact Sedation Dentistry of Charleston. To schedule an IV sedation appointment with Dr. Carimi, visit http://www.sedationdentistrycharleston.com or call the office at 843-471-1677.

Selecting Cognitive & Behavioral Endpoint Measures for Trials in Rare Epilepsy and MPS Disorders, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

https://www.prweb.com/

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

Several case examples of current trials will be shared, with a focus on differential outcome measures and rationale for their use.

Clinical trials in patients with rare forms of epilepsy and MPS disorders present considerable challenges, as patients with these conditions are heterogeneous and many are quite impaired. Further, comorbid sensory and motor deficits are common as are disruptive behaviors. Additionally, these diseases are often regressive, making the assessment of cognition and behavior even more complex.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 11am EST (4pm GMT/UK), join Dr. Pamela Ventola, Senior Science Director of Pediatrics and Rare Disease at Cogstate in a live webinar where she will describe the critical factors to consider when selecting cognitive and behavioral endpoints for these trials, including perspectives from regulatory agencies.

Dr. Ventola will describe common measures such as developmental assessments (e.g., Bayley-4 and Mullen), the Wechsler Scales, Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Third Edition. She will differentiate between the measures so attendees will be better positioned to select outcome assessments based on the specific indication and needs of the trial.

Several case examples of current trials will be shared, with a focus on differential outcome measures and rationale for their use.
