Healthy Roster Helps Parents Assess Mental Health of College Students this Season & Beyond

“The stress of college life can catch up with young adults, so it’s powerful for parents to connect with their children where they feel most supported – at home.”

One in four students have a diagnosable mental illness and 40 percent don’t seek help, according to research conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). With Thanksgiving upon us, Healthy Roster, a mobile-first platform for supporting the health and wellness of high school and college students, is helping parents maximize facetime with their college-aged kids this season and gain insight into their mental health. In partnership with top crisis counselors and licensed psychologists, Healthy Roster is revealing best practices for assessing how their children are feeling, along with tips for starting a productive dialogue when they’re home for the holidays.

“The stress of college life can catch up with young adults, so it’s powerful for parents to connect with their children where they feel most supported – at home,” said Dan Fronczak, co-founder and president of Healthy Roster. “Often times, it can be difficult to recognize the warning signs that your student is struggling, so our focus is on early detection through proactive mental health screening and alerts.”

Healthy Roster provides high school and collegiate athletic trainers with better visibility into the physical and mental health of their players with an innovative mobile documentation and communication platform. With the SAFE Roster platform, healthcare providers can now more easily conduct secure screenings for mental health as well – including receiving alerts for at-risk individuals, facilitating escalation to a certified mental health provider, and engaging more quickly to address the complete health of each young person.

According to experts, the first step is taking note of the physical symptoms that can alert you to a potential change of the mental health of your young adult:

1. Changes in sleep patterns (sleeping more or less than usual, insomnia, not being able to stay asleep, not sleeping for days at a time)

2. Changes in weight (loss or gain) or changes in eating patterns (overly anxious about what they are eating or used to be a fairly healthy eater and now do not care at all; do not eat, eat excessively)

3. Changes in physical activity: From excessive exercise (more than is typical or healthy) to dismissing physical health (does not exercise at all if they used to, personal hygiene problems)

4. Changes in social behavior: isolation from friends, peers, family (more than is usual for them)

5. Changes in personality: Apathetic approach to life (do not care for things they used to: grades, sports, hobbies)

“If you’re seeing physical signs and symptoms that make you think your child may be struggling, it’s important to prepare yourself before even starting the conversation,” said Maria Bucci, LPC. “It’s important to self-reflect and evaluate how to foster the conversation with your child effectively, which is why we’ve also developed our top strategies for starting that conversation with your child.”

1. Help Yourself First. Bucci recommends parents think about their own mental health, along with their current relationship with their child, before starting a conversation. She encourages parents to talk to their child’s doctor or college counseling center for guidance on starting the conversation.

2. Put Yourself in Their Shoes. Think to yourself: “When I was the same age my kid is now, what would I have wanted my parents to say to me?”

3. What You Feel Isn’t What They Feel. What your child is experiencing and feeling as a young adult is inevitably going to be different than what you went through as a young adult. What they’re feeling is not a reflection of you and your emotions – it’s solely your child’s.

4. You Can’t “Fix” Your Child. Bucci stresses the fact that parents can’t absorb their child’s emotions – they can only observe. Focus instead on creating a safe and supportive environment, provide mental health resources, and remind them that they aren’t alone.

5. Focus on listening and observing. Instead of immediately reacting, Bucci recommends waiting 20 seconds to respond.

“The biggest tool in a parent’s toolbox is to listen,” added Sarah Neuss, ATC, Crisis Counselor. “Listen to what your student is saying and do not judge. The parent can create an environment where the student feels safe sharing and then can take that and help the student find a professional to help them work through what is manifesting these thoughts and feelings.”

The Rooted Alumni Program Benefits Clients on Their Life-long Recovery Journey

News Image

We want to reinvigorate those good feelings that treatment creates and continue to generate hope in each of our clients’ lives.

Promises Behavioral Health, a leading provider of addiction and mental health treatment, has developed an alumni program to help clients stay on track with their recovery after initial care. The Rooted alumni program will be a part of all 10 of the Promises facilities at no extra cost to their clients.

The Rooted alumni program was created with the understanding that clients need continued support after treatment. This program gives clients that support by providing continued check-ins with facility alumni coordinators and essential resources for addiction and mental health recovery. Each facility also hosts weekly, on-site alumni meetings, sober group outings, community volunteer opportunities and homecoming events; all in an effort to boost social engagement and provide an outlet to share stories of success and struggle. By bridging the gap after treatment, clients can return to their recovery roots and find hope during difficult times.

“This program is so important for maintaining peer to peer connection,” says Patrick Custer, National Director of Alumni with Promises Behavioral Health. “We want to reinvigorate those good feelings that treatment creates and continue to generate hope in each of our clients’ lives.”

The Rooted alumni program will be offered to all clients who complete their treatment plan within the Promises Behavioral Health family of facilities. This program will benefit clients by giving them the tools to maintain long-term recovery results and will provide fellowship opportunities which are a proven factor in life-long sobriety. Research indicates that a mixture of behavioral health treatment, sober housing options, and “life-affirming” alumni services reduces relapse and psychiatric symptoms. In creating the Rooted alumni program, Promises Behavioral Health can deepen client to client relationships and provide hope for those struggling after treatment.

Residential Eating Disorder Treatment Center Opens In Claremont, CA

Many Inland Empire residents have had to travel a long way to find eating disorder care. We want to make it easier for our community to find the help they need.

Bright Road Recovery Eating Disorder Treatment Program has announced the opening of their residential treatment center in Claremont, California. As the first to bring residential eating disorder treatment to the Inland Empire, Bright Road Recovery is committed to increasing the local community’s access to excellent eating disorder care.

Bright Road Recovery’s residential treatment center is an intimate and intensive program for adult women who are experiencing an eating disorder and co-occurring conditions such as PTSD, Anxiety, Depression and other mental health disorders. The program utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to treat the whole person. Group sessions utilize evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT, and are enhanced by art therapy, mindfulness, yoga, and other creative and engaging modalities. Individual therapy sessions offer patients the opportunity to benefit from EMDR so they can begin to process trauma that may perpetuate eating disorder symptoms.

Nutrition stabilization, education and counseling are also a large component of Bright Road Recovery’s program. Registered dietitians and the dietetics team guide patients in supported meals and meal preparation. Patients also participate in exposure and response prevention sessions such as meal outings in the community and grocery shopping.

Bright Road Recovery’s new residential treatment program compliments their outpatient program, also located in Claremont. The outpatient program located at 428 Harrison Avenue in the Claremont Village offers outpatient psychotherapy, outpatient nutrition counseling, intensive outpatient program and partial hospitalization program services. Bright Road Recovery professionals treat anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and can work with adolescents and adults who have eating disorders complicated by other diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

“Many Inland Empire residents have had to travel a long way to find eating disorder care. We want to make it easier for our community to find the help they need. Adding residential treatment to the services we provide brings a much needed component of care to the adult women in our community who are experiencing an eating disorder,” stated Tamson Overholtzer, LMFT, CEDS, founder and CEO.

Bright Road Recovery is accepting referrals for admission at all levels of care. Those interested can contact the admissions department at 909-624-7070 to learn more.

Bright Road Recovery is the Inland Empire’s premier eating disorder treatment program and was founded in Claremont, California in 2014 by Tamson Overholtzer, licensed marriage and family therapist and certified eating disorder specialist. This small, private eating disorder program is focused on bringing eating disorder care to the community for adults and adolescents. Bright Road Recovery is accredited by the Joint Commission.

Additional attendees included Heidi Klum, Jesse Williams, Samira Wiley, Jane Lynch, Debby Ryan, Lance Bass, Jonathan Tucker, Madison Beer, drag personalities Raja & Nina West, Eugene Lee Yang, EJ Johnson, Gigi Gorgeous, Nats Getty, August Getty, Chris Daughtry, Terrell Carter, Alyson Stoner, Bruce Vilanch, Cassandra Cass, Charlie Barnett, Chester Lockhart, Daniel Franzese, Gregory Zarian, Ian Alexander, Jen Richards, John Flanagan, Lawrence Zarian, Mark Tennyson, Michael D. Highlights from the organization’s annual star-studded fundraiser included:

  • Jane Lynch presented the Champion Award to Cybill Shepherd: “Cybill is being honored tonight because, for many decades, she has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights and full equality… For years, Cybill Shepherd has been boldly, fearlessly and loudly making the case that everyone deserves acceptance, no matter who they love.”
  • In an emotional acceptance speech, Champion Award honoree Cybill Shepherd tearfully thanked her late sister, who was unable to live openly as a lesbian. “No, my sister did not have the support that these young people will be getting from this wonderful, wonderful organization; and so, I want to thank everyone here tonight, because we all have in our lives people that we would have liked to have saved.” Shepherd continued, “My sister lived the life she wanted to live, but she didn’t live it openly. Gladys Terry Shepherd, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for the honor of being here tonight.”

  • Hayley Kiyoko accepted the Youth Innovator Award, stating: “So many LGBTQ youth don’t have that same support in their own communities. It is our duty to share our strength to help guide the ones that get lost in the dark. I’m very proud to be standing here today, and I thank you all for continuing to inspire others by existing.”

That is why we need to build a global movement to end suicide among LGBTQ young people NOW. “
  • Eugene Lee Yang surprised seventeen-year-old high school senior Julia Lacher, who traveled all the way from Somerset, Wis., to share her story reaching out to The Trevor Project for support after watching a Try Guys video about Eugene volunteering at the organization.

The Pathfinder Network Launches Enhanced Visiting Pilot Program for Incarcerated Parents in Oregon

News Image

“In Oregon alone there are 70,000 children who have had a parent in prison or jail—it is important for these kids to know they are loved and that their parents want to spend time with them,” said TPN director of corrections programs Sheri Sandoval.

After a year of development, this month The Pathfinder Network (TPN) began piloting its new parenting program, Parenting Inside Out (PIO) Phase II: Enhanced Visiting. An advanced skills development and parent-child visiting program for incarcerated parents, PIO Phase II builds upon the evidence-based Parenting Inside Out® (PIO) curriculum and provides special focus on strengthening positive parenting practices through individual and group coaching on communication, connection and planning for life as a parent after release. With a strengths-based and holistic approach, the program supports incarcerated parents as well provides materials and resources for children and caregivers, all with the goal of enhancing the parent-child relationship, increasing positive family engagement and mitigating the impact of parental incarceration on children.

PIO Phase II is a pilot project made possible by a federal Second Chance Act grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and a partnership with the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC). Over the next two years, the pilot is projected to serve more than 140 incarcerated parents at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility and Santiam Correctional Institution, along with their children and caregivers of their children.

“We are committed to working together with the parents, caregivers, children and staff, as well as with our partners at DOC and the Department of Human Services, in order to provide opportunities for children to have healthy, structured and positive interactions with their parents,” shared Milo Dittrich, TPN corrections program manager over seeing PIO Phase II. “When people are dealing with difficult things, we can meet them where they are to provide tangible support and walk alongside with them.”

Once parents have completed PIO, they are eligible to apply for the PIO Phase II program, which provides advanced skill development of core PIO topics and includes lessons on communication with children, child centered parenting and nurturing children’s individuality. Over the course of three months, parents participate in 30 hours of advanced skills development and practice workshops with trained TPN coaches, one-on-one coaching, monthly enhanced coached visits with their children, post-visit debrief sessions, and peer support groups. Additionally, coaches partner with parents to develop individualized parenting re-entry plans that include identifying relevant community-based services for ongoing support after they release. All parents and families who participate in the program are also invited to an annual family engagement event. The first two cohorts of the program consist of 12 mothers and fathers, and around 20 children ranging in age from infant to 17 and living across the state of Oregon and parts of Washington.

Unlike many existing programs currently available for incarcerated parents, a key component of PIO Phase II provides ongoing support and resources for children and caregivers, addressing the barriers that often prevent positive visiting experiences and building protective factors that reduce the social and emotional impact of having an incarcerated parent. Before visits, TPN coaches offer outreach to the families to develop a relationship and prepare children and caregivers for what to expect from the program. Coaches also provide developmentally specific support materials to children that mirror what the incarcerated parents are learning along with referrals to community resources when needed.

A portion of the grant award will fund transportation and lodging costs for caregivers and children traveling from far away, and efforts to increase contact through video calls and technology are underway. Additionally, PIO Phase II includes a trauma informed emotional intelligence training for visiting security staff in order to promote the creation of safer institutions and visiting spaces that allow for empowerment, growth and healing for the families.

“In Oregon alone there are 70,000 children who have had a parent in prison or jail—it is important for these kids to know they are loved and that their parents want to spend time with them,” said TPN director of corrections programs Sheri Sandoval, citing a 2016 policy report by The Annie E. Casey Foundation. “PIO Phase II provides the opportunity to not only increase contact between children and their incarcerated parents, but to really support families throughout the process.”

Vaping Anxiety Away With Vīb’s CBD Disposable Vape Pens

Vīb

Vīb

Leading CBD company, Vīb, provides a variety of vape oil flavors, such as passionfruit and cool mint, that are provided with independent laboratory test reports for each batch produced.

Anxiety is sweeping the country in epidemic proportions. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) puts the current figures of adults who suffer at 40 million, yet only 36.9% of those receive any form of treatment. Such mental health issues manifest in many different ways, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Anyone can be affected, with factors such as life events, genetics, and brain chemistry playing a large part.

Not only can such conditions cause huge difficulties in everyday life, but those who’re afflicted are far more likely to seek support from a doctor or be hospitalized for a psychiatric disorder.

The Reality Of Living With Anxiety

While anxiety presents in a multi-faceted manner, some of the more common symptoms include disproportionate worrying over everyday situations, agitation, palpitations, sweaty palms, feeling restless, fatigue, difficulty in focusing and poor concentration, irritability, muscle tension, sleep issues, panic attacks, flashbacks to past traumatic events, irrational fears, and a withdrawal from social situations.

Mainstream treatments to combat anxiety disorders are often behavior-based, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or pharmaceutical, with drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft being amongst the most commonly prescribed medications. However, with the advent of CBD products that contain less than 0.3% THC becoming legal in more and more states, many are turning to the natural benefits of CBD oil as an effective alternative.

The Calming Effects Of CBD

The use of CBD is a subject of ongoing study, with one of the most positive aspects of the oil appearing to be that of reducing many of the common symptoms associated with anxiety. While many people relate the word “cannabis” to a substance that alters the state of consciousness, this is not the case with CBD oil. As long as the oil is derived from a hemp plant then it will contain less than 0.3% levels of THC – the substance that causes such euphoria. The oil works in conjunction with chemical receptors within the body, helping to regulate natural bodily functions that gently reduce many of the symptoms of anxiety but with none the intoxication effects brought about by THC.

Multiple studies into the use of CBD for mental health disorders suggest that it’s an effective method to help with relaxation, improve mood, and to combat sleep disorders. In addition, it’s apparent pain-relieving benefits are well documented, and with discomfort and pain often going hand-in-hand with increasing anxiety and depression this is a further advantage of the wholly natural alternative treatment.

Vaping CBD For Instant Effects

There are many different methods of using CBD, from gummies to tincture drops beneath the tongue. By far the most convenient method is to use a CBD oil vape pen. Not only is this the most practicable method by which to carry the substance around, it also delivers a virtually instant effect. This means that the unpredictable symptoms of anxiety can be treated as and when they occur.

While much has improved around the stigma of taking medication to address anxiety, for many the negative connotations remain. Using a cbd oil vape pen is beyond convenient and nobody can tell that the substance being vaped contains CBD, making it a completely invisible method of targeting symptoms of anxiety.

The key to effectively vaping CBD is to ensure that the oil used is of the greatest quality and guaranteed to contain less than .01% of THC. Leading CBD company, Vīb, provides a variety of vape oil flavors, such as passionfruit and cool mint, that are provided with independent laboratory test reports for each batch produced. This allows users to benefit from a consistent supply of top-quality, THC-free CBD oil, something that’s essential when utilizing the substance to target anxiety.

With the number of people living with anxiety only predicted to rise, the use of CBD as a natural remedy is a positive step forward to helping improve the mental health of the nation. Discover more about the guaranteed high quality of CBD oil and vape pens Vīb offers at https://feelthevib.com
