Linc Housing and National CORE Join Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and Inglewood Mayor James Butts Jr. to Break Ground on 101 New Affordable and Supportive Homes

Inglewood Mayor James Butts and LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas (both center), with Rebecca Clark, President & CEO, Linc Housing and Mike Ruane, Executive Vice President, National CORE.

This is the kind of transit-oriented development that our region needs, and we simply can’t build it fast enough.

Co-developers National Community Renaissance (National CORE) and Linc Housing, both California-based nonprofits, today joined Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Inglewood Mayor James Butts, Jr., and other partners to celebrate the start of construction at the site of Fairview Heights Apartments. The all-new affordable housing apartment complex will bring 101 one-, two- and three-bedroom homes to Inglewood, including 50 units for people who have experienced homelessness, 50 units for households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income, and one manager’s unit.

“When this is built, we’ll have 100 affordable apartments – half for people transitioning off the streets, and the other half for people struggling to get by,” said Supervisor Ridley-Thomas. “This is the kind of transit-oriented development that our region needs, and we simply can’t build it fast enough.” The 1.44-acre site, located at 923 East Redondo Blvd in Inglewood, is owned by the County of Los Angeles.

“This apartment community fulfills our continuing commitment to provide opportunity and housing for those of low income and allows the homeless to become housed,” said Mayor Butts. “I thank Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Linc Housing and National CORE for partnering with Inglewood to produce such a magnificent project.”

Fairview Heights Apartments will include two four-story Spanish-style buildings with open spaces to promote resident interaction. The community will have on-site parking, bike storage, community room with computer lab, offices for case management, tot lot, and an outdoor courtyard with a picnic area. The new complex will incorporate a variety of energy efficiency, water conservation and sustainable building features that promote healthy living and help residents reduce their utility expenses.

“Homelessness ends when we have enough supportive and affordable housing for everyone,” said Michael Ruane, executive vice president of National CORE. “We’re proud to partner with Linc Housing to be part of the solution by bringing these much needed new homes to Inglewood.”

Partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and The People Concern will allow Linc and National CORE to serve the 50 formerly homeless households with intensive case management services, while all future residents will have access to life-enhancing services through Linc’s resident services program.

“We know that providing an affordable home is the first step to ending homelessness and creating housing stability for low-income families,” said Rebecca Clark, Linc Housing president and CEO. “We also know it takes supportive services to ensure our residents thrive, which is why we’re committed to working with our partners long term so this new community succeeds for decades to come.”

Intensive case management services include mental health and physical health services, employment counseling and job placement, education, substance abuse counseling, money management, assistance in obtaining and maintaining benefits, and referrals to community-based services and resources. Linc resident services will support all residents with a variety of programs to promote community, health and wellness.

In addition to the new homes, the ground level will also have 7,394 square feet of commercial retail and community-serving retail space to create opportunities for local businesses and community organizations. The location is in walking distance to surrounding community amenities, including the nearby Edward Vincent Junior Park and the Fairview Heights Metro Station due to open later this year.

Funding for the development comes from a variety of sources including $11.5 million from the Los Angeles County Development Authority (Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Mental Health Housing Program Funds, Measure H Funds, and Proposition A – L.A. County District Two), as well as a conventional loan and tax credit equity from Bank of America.

The new community was designed by KFA Architecture and will be built by National CORE’s construction division. The development is due to be completed in late 2021.

Tom and Dave’s talent, their personal experiences with cancer and their passion for helping cancer patients and the people who love them are a terrific addition to the Cancer Hope Network community.

Bongiorno is Partner and VP for Wireless Innovations LLC and holds his MBA in Marketing from Pace Graduate School of Business. He has been a staunch supporter of the organization for many years. “I first learned of Cancer Hope Network’s impressive work when my wife Diane, a cancer survivor, was trained as a Support Volunteer,” he recalls. “Ever since that experience, I’ve been committed to the mission of providing hope for patients and caregivers facing cancer. Serving as a Trustee is an opportunity to create new connections and to help ensure that the CHN mission is fulfilled.”

Tom and Diane received CHN’s Spirit of Hope award in 2018, recognizing them as an “extraordinary source of support to Cancer Hope Network.”

“Tom has been a part of the Cancer Hope Network family for many years,” says Executive Director Cynthia Gutierrez Bernstein. “He brings business acumen and creative insights to the organization, combined with a personal passion for our mission. We are honored that he has agreed to serve as a trustee.”

Ondrejcak is Partner at C2R Ventures, a national Consulting and Search firm based in NYC. He has an MBA from Seton Hall University and is a licensed CPA in New Jersey, as well as a member of both the AICPA and NJSCPA. He is a recognized leader in accounting and finance transformation, completing projects for several S&P 100 and Global 500 companies throughout his consulting career.

“My wife Heather is a cancer survivor, which makes Cancer Hope Network’s mission personal,” Dave says. “I am proud to volunteer with this organization as I can personally attest to the positive benefits CHN’s support brings to the personal, work and family life of individuals. This is a truly stressful time of their lives and serving as Treasurer for Cancer Hope Network is a way to leverage my expertise to help ensure no one faces cancer alone.”

“Robust systems and oversight provide a foundation to ensure Cancer Hope Network is able to serve clients efficiently and effectively,” said Gutierrez Bernstein. “Dave’s experience in accounting, internal controls and systems are a valuable addition to the organization. We’re pleased that he is sharing that expertise with our community and are excited that Dave and Tom are joining us as we grow.”

About Cancer Hope Network

Cancer Hope Network provides free one-on-one emotional peer support to adult cancer patients and their loved ones. Each of CHN’s 400+ volunteers is at least one year post-treatment or successfully undergoing maintenance therapies. Their care is individual, but there’s power in numbers. Together, they’ve faced more than 80 types and sub types of cancer. Which means that they’re prepared to help more than 98% of the 1.7M patients who will be diagnosed this year. They speak 15 languages. Cancer Hope Network volunteers offer support from diagnosis, through treatment and into recovery.

Cerebral Launches in Seven States, Aiming to Fill a Gap in Mental Health Care

Cerebral is offering an alternative to a mental health system that many see as broken.

Cerebral has launched publicly in California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

The startup is reimagining the process by which people are treated for anxiety and depression. Clients sign up for a comprehensive subscription, which allows them to schedule an initial visit to be held within days of signing up. If they are prescribed medication during their visit, they are then assigned to a care manager who works closely with them and can respond to any questions or concerns within a day.

All of this happens online, and medication is delivered directly to the person’s home for no extra charge. Dosage and medication adjustments are common in psychiatric care, so clients have regular check-ins to figure out when changes to a treatment regimen are needed.

The founders include Dr. Ho Anh, the former Medical Director at Hims and former Medical Group President at Lemonaid Health, as well as Kyle Robertson, who has deep family and personal connections to mental health.

Cerebral is currently offering a discount for the first month to make care for Seasonal Affective Disorder more accessible, with the price at just $5 for the first month of treatment for those who start before February 1st.

The startup is a new alternative to a broken traditional mental health care system. 18.1% of American adults are suffering from an anxiety disorder at any given time. What’s scary is that only 1 in 5 of them receive treatment consistent with current practice guidelines, and 35% receive no treatment at all. 3 month wait times are average to see a psychiatrist. And they’re often waiting for a consultation that they’ll have to pay $500 for.

For $92 per month, comprehensive care at Cerebral includes:

  • Video visits with a prescribing provider
  • Medication & medication delivery
  • Assigned care manager

For the past 3 months, Cerebral ran a private beta in California & Ohio. Early indicators of clinical efficacy are promising, and the team is excited to continue tracking this over the course of the months and years to come.

This promising new line of treatment is getting interest around the country. Bloomberg ran an exclusive look on what this launch means to the industry.

Clients looking for treatment as well as mental health professionals looking for options for their own clients should learn more about Cerebral on the company’s website.

Free Event for 100 Moms of Children with Autism by Therapy and Beyond

Mom's Mingles

Therapy and Beyond Mom’s Mingles

The Mom’s Mingles aim to share resources, connect mothers with their local communities, and give moms a night off for themselves.

Therapy and Beyond, one of the largest applied behavior analysis providers across Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado is partnering with FEAT-NT to bring Fort Worth’s 3rd Annual Mom’s Mingle for moms of children with autism! This free event for 100+ mothers of children with autism will be held on Sunday, February 9th at The Hurst Conference Center located at 1601 Campus Drive, Hurst, TX. Each year, Therapy and Beyond partners with local organizations to throw annual Mom’s Mingles in multiple cities, where 100+ moms of children on the autism spectrum join together to enjoy a night off from their busy lives. Registration for this popular event is now open and available HERE.

About Therapy and Beyond’s Mom’s Mingles

For this year’s Fort Worth Mingle, Therapy and Beyond has partnered with the nonprofit group FEAT-NT to present the moms with a suave 007 Casino Night! 100+ moms will enjoy free dinner, drinks, and play casino-themed games. Afterward, they can turn in their ‘winnings’ for some amazing prizes from our generous sponsors! Most importantly, they will immerse themselves in their local community and be surrounded by women on the same autism journey as themselves.

According to the CDC, about 1 in 59 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). At times, caregivers may find themselves feeling isolated and lost. The Mom’s Mingles aim to share resources, connect mothers with their local communities, and give moms a night off for themselves.

Details about this mingle and other free upcoming events are available at http://www.therapyandbeyond.com/events

The mingles first began in Dallas in 2013, when Dr. Regina Crone, founder of Therapy and Beyond, had the idea to create a community giveback that didn’t focus on learning a new skill or a workshop, but would simply give moms the opportunity to bond and have a fun night out. The event was so successful that Therapy and Beyond began to establish annual Mom’s Mingles in other cities, such as Denver, Oklahoma City and Houston.

About Therapy and Beyond

Therapy and Beyond was founded in 2006 on the principal that there is hope for every child. Today, they provide 1:1 individualized ABA therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum in Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the most commonly prescribed treatment for children on the spectrum, and focuses on expanding functional communication skills, executive functioning skills, and advancing each child’s independence. In addition to helping individuals on the spectrum through ABA, one of Therapy and Beyond’s goals is to find ways to give back to the autism community as a whole, through free events like the Mom’s Mingles.

Meridian at Bella Mar is Awarded with a 100% Deficiency-Free Survey

Bella Mar front of building

Meridian at Bella Mar

Receiving deficiency-free survey results reflects our extraordinary team and their dedication to our mission of enriching the life of every person we serve.

Meridian at Bella Mar, a Meridian Senior Living memory care community in Santa Monica, has achieved a deficiency-free survey in March 2019 as administered by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

“Receiving deficiency-free survey results reflects our extraordinary team and their dedication to our mission of enriching the life of every person we serve,” stated Glen Cummins Regional Director of Operations of Meridian Senior Living. “We are proud of their hard work and commitment to excellence in all that they do.”

Achieving a 100% deficiency-free survey is exceptional especially considering California’s rigorous inspection. In order for a senior living community to achieve this status, all services provided at the facility must meet or exceed all state and federal standards. A deficiency-free survey is a key indicator of excellence for a senior living community. According to CDPH’s 2016-17 data report (most recent available) over 17,000 deficiencies were recorded among senior living communities.

Senior living communities are inspected periodically to evaluate services and systems in place and oversee compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. In a multi-day process, inspectors arrive unannounced to assess the facility. Surveyors determine compliance with regulations governing areas including policies and procedures, resident care, quality of care and quality of life, medication administration, medical records, kitchen sanitation, staff competencies, dietary needs, equipment, safety, and overall wellness of the community. The senior living community is awarded a “deficiency-free” survey when all of these regulations are met.

At Meridian at Bella Mar, seniors can expect the highest level of care as supported in receiving a deficiency-free state survey, which is a key consideration when selecting a senior living community. For more information about Meridian at Bella Mar, visit meridianatbellamar.com or call (310) 660-7699.

New Spiritual Self-Help Book Invites Readers to Restore Their Lives After Trauma

“I AM: Your Guide to Mind and Body Union for Total Awareness” by Maggie Moor

We can connect to the natural sources of energy in our bodies by focusing on our mind, body and spirit,” said Moor. “When you focus on self-love by connecting to these resources, you will find that you can live a richer, fuller life.

Author, healer and psychoanalyst Maggie Moor has developed a spiritual self-help book that outlines her somatic healing method to help those who have been through trauma. “I AM: Your Guide to Mind and Body Union for Total Awareness” is designed to help readers who have endured trauma to become self-aware and create a mind, body and soul connection within themselves.

As a woman who faced childhood sexual abuse, drug and alcohol addiction and various other dangerous situations, Moor was motivated to develop her book to connect with others who have endured similar experiences in their lives. In “I AM,” Moor emphasizes the importance of unifying the mind and body to achieve total awareness within oneself while here on Earth. She details concepts such as energetic awareness, healing the inner child and cultivating somatic experiences as tools readers can use to heal their past trauma.

“We can connect to the natural sources of energy in our bodies by focusing on our mind, body and spirit,” said Moor. “When you focus on self-love by connecting to these resources, you will find that you can live a richer, fuller life.”

Moor encourages readers to implement the healing tools in “I AM” by including various journaling prompts and meditation techniques within the book. When readers follow this informative self-help guide, they can begin to bring these tools to fruition in their lives and find complete awareness within themselves.

Moor also delves into the personal reality that humans create in their life experiences. Moor advocates for readers to be open to both what they consider to be “good” and “bad” experiences and reassures that all life events reflect one’s own perception. She concludes that we are all on Earth to simply experience life.
