Workit Health’s Digital Addiction Care Joins the Aetna Network

Health plans play a vital role in improving access to quality addiction care via telehealth, and we’re proud Aetna is giving their members more options at their moment of readiness to get help.

Workit Health, the nation’s leading provider of digital addiction care, including telemedicine for opioid use disorder, is now an in-network provider with Aetna Behavioral Health. Workit Health’s online addiction care program offers therapy and medication management from licensed clinicians in California and Michigan.

On a pilot basis, fully insured Aetna members in California and Michigan can now receive treatment from Workit Health’s web and phone apps, including therapy from licensed counselors and a personalized curriculum of evidence-based interactive courses, without a referral. For example, Aetna members who are struggling with addiction such as opioid use disorder can sign up by phone or the app, subject to standard cost sharing, to have access to Workit Health’s Clinic program, which offers low-barrier buprenorphine via telemedicine after a single in-person visit to a Workit clinic or a clinic recommended by Workit. Recovery groups, video clinician visits and drug testing are all completed in Workit Health’s apps.

”The Workit Health team looks forward to delivering results for Aetna members,” says Workit Health’s Co-CEO, Lisa McLaughlin. “We’re proud that Aetna has recognized our commitment to providing better outcomes at lower costs for its members.”

“More than 130 people die of opioid overdose per day, so time is of the essence in expanding access to clinically-proven digital addiction care like Workit Health,” says Robin McIntosh, Workit Health’s Co-CEO. “Health plans play a vital role in improving access to quality addiction care via telehealth, and we’re proud Aetna is giving their members more options at their moment of readiness to get help.”

“We are committed to easy access to evidence-based care for our members suffering from addiction,” said Cara McNulty, DPA, President, Aetna Behavioral Health. “Workit Health allows us to continue to expand the digital solutions we provide to our members, which remove barriers to care and help members receive high-quality care more conveniently. We look forward to working with Workit Health on this pilot.”

Overdose is a leading cause of accidental death in the United States, but many high-cost treatment programs don’t use evidence-based therapy or medication to treat addiction. Workit Health has been the industry leader in expanding access to quality addiction care via telemedicine since 2015. The company was founded by two experienced founders in long-term recovery, and has been working with national clinical experts and organizations since its foundation, including Itai Danovitch, MD, the Commissioner of California’s Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. Both the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse have awarded Workit Health grants.

Workit Health’s Clinic program launched as a direct response to the opioid crisis, and offers two of the three FDA-approved medications to treat opioid addiction via telehealth. After a single in-person visit, members continue buprenorphine care via video visits with a clinician and a licensed care team. After success in Michigan and Northern California, Workit Health launched an additional clinic in Bakersfield, California. Workit Health partners with a diverse group of large self-insured employers, providers, and payers to bring quality addiction care to those who need it most.

Ad Hoc Committee for babies born opioid-dependent now represented in Purdue bankruptcy proceedings

Attorneys representing an Ad Hoc Committee for Neo-Natal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) babies and children filed a statement before U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Drain in White Plains, NY notifying the Purdue debtors that the needs of the most innocent victims in America’s prescription opioid epidemic cannot be forgotten as a $12 billion settlement is considered.

Tartar Krinsky & Drogin’s Scott Markowitz will act as legal counsel to the Ad Hoc NAS Committee composed of Attorneys Scott Bickford, Kent Harrison Robbins and Donald Creadore.

“The NAS Baby Ad Hoc Committee, which will work cooperatively with the Debtor and the Unsecured Creditors Committee, will represent the guardians who are responsible for the babies diagnosed at birth with Neo-Natal Abstinence Syndrome due solely to their birth mother’s use during pregnancy of opioids manufactured by Purdue among other entities,” Counsel informed the Court.

The NAS Ad Hoc Committee will serve several objectives, according to Mr. Bickford, most notably being:

  • To recover damages for the personal injuries suffered by children suffering from opioid use by their mother’s during pregnancy; and
  • To seek establishment of a nationwide medical monitoring program to be overseen by a trust administrator that will improve the health and outcomes for hundreds of thousands of NAS infants and children as they age.

The members of the NAS Ad Hoc Committee are attorneys who have committed thousands of hours of their time to zealously represent the interests of this unique group of NAS claimants, filing class actions covering 34 individual states and establishing direct medical links between in-vitro opioid exposure and birth defects such as Spina Bifida, Cleft Palate, heart, head and gastro-intestinal deformities, and long-term development issues such as speech, motor skill and learning disabilities, said Mr. Bickford.

“The members of this Ad Hoc Committee are the de facto experts representing the legal interests of NAS babies,” Mr. Bickford said.

“Prescription opioids were thrust onto the American public in the mid-1990s, and the epidemic these drugs have spawned has many aspects but the most overlooked is the incidence of NAS in newborns,” said Mr. Bickford.

The Ad Hoc Committee said the NAS claims, in the aggregate, exceed the claims of all other known creditors in the Purdue bankruptcy proceedings. “These claimants are voiceless as well as faultless,” said Mr. Bickford.

Dr. Jeremy Friese of Verata Health Invited to Discuss the State of Prior Authorizations with Minnesota Hospital Association and North Memorial Health Leadership

Dr Jeremy Friese

“I’m proud that our proven artificial intelligence platform is helping patients across the country and providing immediate financial value for providers,” said Dr. Friese.

Faced with growing prior authorization burden across the state of Minnesota the Minnesota Hospital Association announced a webinar with Dr. Jeremy Friese, CEO of Verata Health, Matt Anderson, Interim CEO of Minnesota Hospital Association, and Nate Dell, VP of Revenue Cycle Management at North Memorial Health to understand the current challenges faced by Minnesota providers and potential solutions. Joe Schindler, VP of Finance of Minnesota Hospital Association, will moderate the webinar to be held on Wednesday, November 6 at noon CST.

Hosted by the Minnesota Hospital Association, the webinar will provide an update on Prior Authorization (PA) advocacy efforts in Minnesota as well as highlight the ways in which Minnesota hospitals and health systems are working to reduce patient delays and billing denials related to PA challenges. Best practices and transformational improvements to PA processes using artificial intelligence will also be discussed.

Manual, time-consuming prior authorizations are a major bottleneck for medical care, leading to delays in obtaining necessary tests and procedures for patients. According to the American Medical Association, 92 percent of physicians report patient care delays due to PA. For clinics and hospitals, the impact is also financial. In recent years, errors in prior authorizations have grown to account for 30% of all provider write-offs. Industry experts quote a cost of $20-50 per prior authorization and tens of thousands more per physician annually due to expensive write-offs. By leveraging powerful artificial intelligence, Verata Health’s provider and hospital customers across the country are automating both simple and complex prior authorizations, dramatically reducing staff burden, increasing patient throughput and reducing costly write-offs.

“After spending nearly two decades practicing medicine and helping lead the most profitable department at Mayo Clinic, I launched Verata Health to help patients get the care they deserve by solving the national PA problem. I’m proud that our proven artificial intelligence platform is helping patients across the country and providing immediate financial value for providers,” said Dr. Friese.

About Verata Health:

Verata Health is a Minnesota-based, physician-led company changing the way medical practices and hospitals tackle the challenges presented by obtaining prior authorization (PA). By leveraging powerful artificial intelligence, Verata Health automates both simple and complex prior authorizations thereby delivering immediate financial value and most importantly helping patients get the care they deserve. The Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit is the only educational event providing clinical, law enforcement, and public safety professionals with practical strategies and solutions to address the country’s stimulant crisis, an often underrecognized emergency compounding the opioid epidemic.

The 2019 summit features a clinical track as well as a law enforcement and public safety track. Attendees can earn up to 16 CE/CMEs, plus an additional 3 ethics credits.

What: Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit

When: November 8-10, 2019

Following an introduction from Jorge Colina, Chief of Police at the Miami Police Department, the Summit will kick off with a keynote address from John L. Eadie, MPA, a coordinator with the National Emerging Threats Initiative, administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy on November 8, 2019 at 9:00 AM EST. With 44 years’ experience within the public health field, Eadie has served in management, executive, and consulting capacities, directing the New York State Department of Health’s pharmaceutical diversion program from 1985 to 1995. Eadie will present the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Initiative’s (HIDTA) latest findings to be used by clinicians, law enforcement, and public safety personnel to design appropriate interdiction, prevention, and treatment programs.

Sheriff Mark Lamb, Pinal County, Arizona will speak on November 9, 2019 at 4:00 PM EST. Elected in 2017, Sheriff Lamb leads initiatives to address the stimulant crisis by developing relationships with mental and behavioral health providers throughout the county. In addition to its specialized narcotics and anti-smuggling teams, the Sheriff’s office works with federal partners to combat human and drug trafficking in Pinal County. Sheriff Lamb has appeared on A&E Network’s Live PD and 60 Days In.

Where: Hyatt Regency Miami, 400 South East Second Ave, Miami, FL 33131

Why:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 14,000 cocaine users and 10,000 meth users died in the United States in 2017, an increase of more than a third compared with 2016 and triple the number of deaths in 2012. That puts stimulant deaths on par with the opioid depressant heroin, which was involved in 15,000 overdose deaths in 2017. The Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit brings together law enforcement and treatment providers to discuss strategies and find solutions.

Wayne Sensor, CEO at Kolmac

Wayne Sensor, CEO at Kolmac

Our team is excited to expand our reach into Frederick and Western Maryland. We believe that the people in this community can benefit from highly effective outpatient addiction treatment that allows them to continue living at home and going to work.

Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers continues to expand its network of addiction treatment locations with a new center in Frederick, Maryland. The new Frederick addiction treatment center opened on October 23rd and provides comprehensive treatment services, including an intensive outpatient (IOP) program.

Founder and Chief Innovation Officer George Kolodner MD developed IOP and established Kolmac in 1973. Since then, the team has provided flexible and effective treatment that has helped more than 30,000 men and women recover from addiction.

Exploring Kolmac’s new location in Frederick

This new clinic location will first offer an evening IOP program. Due to the program’s flexibility, it is the most popular offering for patients. The Frederick addiction treatment center will also later offer a daytime IOP program for patients who would prefer to attend treatment during the day.

The public can also expect the Frederick location to soon launch a continuing care program to serve the first group of patients completing the eight-week IOP program. In keeping with its roots, Kolmac will provide family support resources and develop specific continuing care groups to meet the needs of the patient populations in the area.

Kolmac will staff this new location with licensed and experienced addiction treatment professionals. To meet the needs of patients with coexisting mental health issues, the Frederick addiction treatment center will have a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner onsite.

According to Kolmac CEO Wayne Sensor, “Our team is excited to expand our reach into Frederick and Western Maryland to help even more patients recover from addiction. We believe that the people in this community can benefit from highly effective outpatient addiction treatment that allows them to continue living at home and going to work.”

Kolmac expands to meet a growing need

Frederick is a growing community, and like all areas of the country, has addiction treatment needs. Kolmac selected this location because it saw an opportunity to make a difference for the residents. “Addiction continues to be a problem across the United States. Our goal is to expand into growing and vibrant communities like Frederick. This will allow us to reach even more men and women as they fight to take their lives back from addiction,” Sensor explains.
