Sphere to Partner with PCI Security Standards Council to Help Secure Payment Data Worldwide

Sphere

We are excited to demonstrate Sphere’s commitment to security and compliance through our participation in the PCI SSC. Through our participation, we hope to be able to work towards a safer, more secure payments ecosystem, which serves to benefit us all,” said Steve Rizzuto, Chief Executive Officer.

Sphere, the leading provider of end-to-end integrated payments and security software, announced today that it has joined the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) as a new Participating Organization. Sphere will work with the PCI SSC to help secure payment data worldwide through the ongoing development and adoption of the PCI Security Standards.

The PCI SSC leads a global, cross-industry effort to increase payment security by providing flexible, industry-driven and effective data security standards and programs. The keystone is the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which provides an actionable framework for developing a robust payment card data security process and preventing, detecting and mitigating criminal attacks and breaches.

“We have tremendous respect for the work of the PCI SSC, and for the organizations that have worked to continuously evolve the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) to meet the changing threat landscape encountered within the payments system,” said Dr. Heather Mark, Ph.D., Director of Compliance and Security at Sphere. “I’m excited that Sphere is joining their effort to further the protection of payment account data.”

As a Participating Organization, Sphere adds its voice to the standards development process and will collaborate with a growing community of more than 800 Participating Organizations to improve payment security worldwide. Sphere will also have the opportunity to recommend new initiatives for consideration to the PCI Security Standards Council and share cross-sector experiences and best practices at the annual PCI Community Meetings.

“In an era of increasingly sophisticated attacks on systems, PCI Security Standards and resources help organizations secure payment data and prevent, detect and mitigate attacks that can lead to costly data breaches,” said Mauro Lance, Chief Operating Officer of the PCI Security Standards Council. “By joining as a Participating Organization, Sphere demonstrates they are playing an active part in improving payment security globally by helping drive awareness and adoption of PCI Security Standards.”

“We are excited to demonstrate Sphere’s commitment to security and compliance through our participation in the PCI SSC. Through our participation, we hope to be able to work towards a safer, more secure payments ecosystem, which serves to benefit us all,” said Steve Rizzuto, Chief Executive Officer of Sphere.

Dylan Walker, New Existence Recovery Center Founder (and father) Shares The Family Inspiration For His Continued Sobriety From Opiates As The Holidays Approach

News Image

“As a new father, still very close to my own parents, I’m even more thankful for my recovery and want to help other families reconnect.” – Dylan Walker, Founder of New Existence Recovery Center

It’s easy to have a “not in my backyard” mentality when it comes to those suffering from drug and alcohol dependency. However, it is closer than anyone imagines.

As the holidays approach, it is hard to overlook the effect of addiction on the family, especially in light of the growing opiate and vape crisis. An estimated 1.9 million people in the US have some type of opioid addiction, with both the numbers for opiate overdose and vape related deaths on the increase.

Dylan Walker, the founder of the New Existence Recovery Center, is one such case. Walker grew up on a dairy farm near Seattle, “My Mom and Dad very much instilled in me the value of hard work,” he recalls. “Dad taught me how to build barns and x the farm machinery.” Since he was a young boy growing up on the farm, Dylan has always enjoyed helping people.

When he was 14-years-old, Dylan started drinking and smoking marijuana, “I was experiencing a lot of social anxiety and social pressure.” Then he started drinking until he blacked out. He graduated to harder drugs in college, much to his parents’ despair. “I experimented with opiates in college and was immediately hooked,” he says. “I used every day.”

Dylan, like many people, suffers from an addictive personality disorder and keeping clean and sober is a daily effort. As a new father, still very close to his own parents, Dylan is even more thankful for his recovery and wants to help others become clean and sober, “God did for me what I couldn’t do for myself”.

The mission of New Existence Recovery center is to provide the highest level of affordable personalized care to those struggling with substance and alcohol abuse through compassion, commitment, and industry-proven educational techniques. A critical aspect of this care includes addressing the well being of each individual.

Perhaps it is Dylan’s farm-grown ethics that can be seen in the way he runs the center, “Since Day One, all of our clients have had my cell number – not a dollar sign and a piece of paper”. According to clinical director John, who has been with Dylan since the center’s inception, “Dylan is an extremely supportive, compassionate, and morally- sound individual. He isn’t greedy or egotistical. He just listens and supports.” Dylan has an open-door policy, which makes things a little hectic sometimes. “I need the chaos to keep me out of my head,” he admits.

If long-term recovery is of importance to you, continued support should be a critical decision factor when choosing your recovery center, especially when choosing one out of state. The right recovery center not only offers a family-like environment but also offers mentorship and continual support from those who have achieved recovery themselves and won their families back. New Existence wishes you and yours a renewed sense of family connection this holiday season.

Mayer LLP Launches Healthcare and Appellate Practices with Four New Attorneys

News Image

This is a powerhouse team of healthcare professionals and we are proud they chose to join our firm. These lawyers have some of the most impressive credentials and trial experience, and I know they will thrive at our firm.

Less than one year after launching Mayer LLP, the firm has grown to nearly 40 attorneys. The most recent additions are four well-known healthcare attorneys with extensive trial and appellate experience in medical malpractice and professional liability, as well as two paralegals and a finance administration professional.

“This is a powerhouse team of healthcare professionals and we are proud they chose to join our firm. These lawyers have some of the most impressive credentials and trial experience, and I know they will thrive at our firm,” said Zach Mayer, founding partner of Mayer LLP. “We’ve experienced terrific growth and success since launching in January which proves our philosophy and approach to serving our clients is exactly what the market needed.”

The lawyers joining the firm include William D. “Dick” Wiles, a medical malpractice attorney who has tried more than 100 cases, and M. Kenneth (Ken) Patterson, a trial lawyer for nearly 40 years with a remarkable track record of success, having achieved a favorable verdict for his clients in over 96 percent of cases tried. Both Wiles and Patterson are members of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates, an invitation-only organization of experienced trial lawyers and judges.

“This firm is exactly the right place for us to bring our healthcare and appellate practices. Mayer LLP is a growing firm with a unique model that we know will serve our clients’ interests very well,” said Dick Wiles. “They have achieved something remarkable in a short time, and we’re delighted to join this high energy team.”

Also joining the healthcare practice is Heather A. Kanny, a litigator who has successfully defended physicians and hospitals across Texas in cases with multi-million-dollar damage exposure. Kevin J. Keith, who is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1987, will be heading the appellate section at Mayer LLP. Keith has handled over 100 appeals in state and federal courts throughout Texas, as well as practiced in the U.S. Supreme Court and Texas Supreme Court.

All four of the new attorneys joining Mayer LLP are leaving Hiersche Hayward Drakeley Urbach, an Addison-based law firm that will cease operations at the end of 2019. In addition to the lawyers, two paralegals and one finance administrator are also leaving HHDU to join Mayer LLP.

Mayer LLP is a law firm with nearly 40 lawyers and offices in Dallas, Houston and Albuquerque. The firm was launched in January 2019 with a group of experienced, like-minded attorneys who saw an opportunity to combine their energy, skill, and entrepreneurial spirit to create a place where the client’s interests are always the top priority. Practice areas include litigation, labor and employment, real estate, tax, corporate transactions and healthcare. Clients of the firm run the gamut from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies and include many well-known retailers, transportation companies, hospitals and real estate developers. ATX Therapeutics Releases First Evidence-Based App for Adults Ready to Quit Smoking and Vaping

Aeris by ATX Therapeutics

Aeris by ATX Therapeutics

The Aeris app supports adults who are ready to quit smoking and vaping by providing evidence-based interventions, including medication tracking and access to free quitline counseling.

ATX Therapeutics announced today the release of Aeris, a new evidence-based tobacco cessation app for U.S. adults who are ready to quit smoking and vaping. Aeris is the first and only smartphone app also designed to address “dual use”, or the widespread behavior of vaping e-cigarettes in addition to smoking combustible cigarettes. The Aeris app is available as a free download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Aeris works by providing evidence-based protocols to guide tobacco users through setting up a personalized quit plan, which includes choosing a quit date, and identifying quit reasons, tobacco triggers and coping strategies. Users can track and see patterns and visual correlations between tobacco-related behaviors such as cravings, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and quit aids. Aeris is the only HIPAA-compliant app that also keeps track of all FDA-approved tobacco cessation medications, including over-the-counter NRT products (e.g. nicotine gum and patches) and prescription products (e.g. Chantix, Zyban). Studies show using FDA-approved medications can double a user’s chances of quitting successfully. Additionally, Aeris informs users of their financial savings and health recovery milestones, such as when nicotine leaves the bloodstream after smoking, and delivers motivational tips and educational content throughout each stage of their quit journey. The app also provides one-tap access to live quitline counseling services provided by the National Cancer Institute at no charge.

“Smoking, shockingly, remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S., killing half a million Americans every year and adding billions of dollars in annual healthcare costs. Most adult cigarette smokers want to quit, but struggle with nicotine addiction, access to care and knowing where to begin,” said ATX Therapeutics CEO Adam Falat. “Aeris provides an easy-to-use tobacco cessation program that delivers evidence-based interventions directly through the smartphones already in most people’s pockets. The app also supports clinical practice guidelines by making it easier to use FDA-approved medications and free quitline counseling services, which have been shown to double a person’s chances of quitting successfully.”

About 13.7% of U.S. adults, or 34.2 million people, smoked cigarettes in 2018, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S., causing more than 480,000 deaths per year. Smoking causes serious chronic health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While cigarette use has been declining among American adults, e-cigarette use is increasing: 3.2% of adults used e-cigarettes in 2018, up from 2.8% in 2017. Current numbers are even more troubling among American youth. In 2019, 27.5% of high school students and 10.5% of middle school students currently use e-cigarettes, up from 1.5% and 0.6% in 2011, respectively. While some evidence supports the use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, the most common usage pattern across all age groups is “dual use”, i.e. current use of both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes. This suggests some e-cigarette use may be supplementing smoking, instead of replacing it. Like traditional cigarettes, most e-cigarette products contain nicotine, a chemical that is reportedly as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Even without nicotine, research suggests that flavorings and other ingredients in e-liquids used for vaping could be linked to serious health problems. As of October 2019, the CDC has confirmed 1,888 cases of probable lung injury and 37 deaths associated with the use of e-cigarette products.

“There is no such thing as a safe tobacco product. The most important thing tobacco users can do to improve their health and reduce their risks for chronic diseases is to quit,” Falat said. “At ATX Therapeutics, we designed Aeris to put the needs of tobacco users at the center of the program and make it easier for them to change behaviors and follow clinical guidance. Everyone’s journey to becoming tobacco-free is unique, and Aeris reflects that by providing a highly personalized user experience designed to produce positive outcomes.”

Flip the Script Campaign Launches to Start the Conversation About Pain Among Older Adults

Flip the Script on Pain logo

Flip the Script is an education initiative aimed at reducing opioid prescription misuse in older adults by building a greater understanding of pain, options for managing pain and safely using opioid pain medicine.

The Florida State University College of Medicine, Department of Geriatrics (FSU Department of Geriatrics) and the University of South Florida School of Aging Studies & Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging (USF School of Aging Studies) announce the launch of a public information campaign to ‘flip the script’ on how Florida’s older adults think about and talk about pain.

Flip the Script is a multi-channel education initiative aimed at reducing opioid prescription misuse in older adults by building a greater understanding of pain, options for managing pain and safely using opioid pain medicine, when it is determined that opioids are the best treatment option for an individual patient.

“Chronic pain conditions are more prevalent for individuals 65 years old and older, with more than half of older adults indicating they’ve experienced some type of pain within the past 30 days,” said Dr. Lisa J. Granville, Professor of Geriatrics and Associate Chair of the Department of Geriatrics, Florida State University College of Medicine. “Pain isn’t just a part of growing older and shouldn’t hinder someone from doing the activities they enjoy the most. The heart of Flip the Script is helping people continue to do the things they love by understanding the individuality of their pain and the options for managing pain based on what matters most to them.”

Flip the Script was developed to help people:

  • Learn More about the types of pain and the impact of pain
  • Be Prepared to describe and track the pain they feel
  • Take Action to find relief and better manage pain by initiating conversations with a health care provider about their pain and ultimately share in the decision-making about how to treat pain

The campaign provides older adults and their care partners with resources, checklists and questions to help start conversations with a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or other health care professional about pain.

“Everyone reacts to pain differently,” said Kathryn Hyer, Ph.D. MPP, Professor and Director, Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging at the University of South Florida. “Flip the Script is one of the first education campaigns that encourages people to take a whole-body approach to reduce the physical and emotional symptoms of pain. By understanding pain, the emotions that are associated with feeling pain and the variety of options available to treat pain, patients can feel empowered to start conversations with a health care provider and work toward an individualized approach to pain management.”

The opioid epidemic in the United States is a far-reaching and life-threatening problem that affects persons of all ages. For older adults, there are several factors that can contribute to opioid-related problems including conditions that may cause chronic pain, taking multiple medications, lack of understanding about medication interaction and serious side effects, including overdose, and the shame of substance misuse or addiction.

To educate Floridians about these topics, Flip the Script also includes information about pain medicine misuse among older adults, safe storage and disposal.

The FSU Department of Geriatrics and USF School of Aging Studies recognize that creating a broader awareness among older adults of the complexities of pain cannot be accomplished in a silo. The teams are grateful for the collaboration of state agencies, health care providers, community organizations and older adults themselves to ensure Flip the Script is an educational and useful resource for Florida’s older adults, their families, friends and health care providers.

Learn more about Flip the Script by visiting http://www.FlipTheScriptOnPain.org.

About Flip the Script

Flip the Script provides resources to help people learn more about the types of pain and the impact of pain; be prepared to describe and track the pain they feel; and take action to find relief and better manage pain by initiating conversations with a health care provider about their pain and ultimately share in the decision-making about how to treat pain.

This project is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Both universities were eligible to receive a competitive, supplemental award to enhance current Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program activities. The supplemental award required funded organizations to focus on opioid abuse education and training that addresses prevention, assessment, management and treatment in older adults.

The Idea Guy® Partners with IdeaScale, Adding Creativity Training to Innovation Management

Our partnership with The Idea Guy will help expand our current offerings, and help our client organizations build the systemic creativity that is proven to make an impact in their performance, increasing an already significant return on investment.

The Idea Guy®, an expert in creating new ideas that solve problems, has partnered with IdeaScale, the world’s largest cloud-based innovation software platform, to collaborate on best-in-class training programs with worldwide reach.

“Every business leader has a problem, and every one of them can be solved with a good idea,” explains Kevin Popović, Founder of The Idea Guy®. “All types of organizations are looking for ways to reduce costs, create new products or generate new lines of revenue, and the people within their organization are the most likely to solve these problems. They need someone to help get those people organized, engaged and into action – that’s my expertise. With IdeaScale, I can now engage more people from across the globe, measure their performance towards a goal, and report on the return on investment that CXOs expect.”

“IdeaScale’s mission is to empower organizations to engage their most valuable resource – passionate people – in making impactful decisions,” says Jessica Day, Co-Founder of IdeaScale. “Our data shows that the average person has about $1,200 in untapped ideas in their head, but ideas that stay there don’t add value to anyone. Organizations need a path for those innovators to contribute, and for their ideas to grow: IdeaScale facilitates that connection. We see our partnership with the Idea Guy as a way to empower those average people to be more creative, more engaged and more productive.”

For most organizations, ideation and ongoing innovation is the new normal. Companies are using proven creative processes as management tools to become “design lead,” making improvements to products, services and experiences. Brands that apply these processes, like Apple, Nike, Procter & Gamble, Walt Disney and Starbucks, report performance increases of more than 200% over their competitors, according to a Design Value Index study of S&P companies over a ten-year period.

But not every company or public sector department has the skills, tools and processes necessary to share that mission across an entire organization. Companies require interaction between people, collaboration across traditional silos, and the ability to act on ideas with greater speed and efficacy in order to make substantive change. IdeaScale and The Idea Guy aim to close that gap so that organizations can train their employees in creative thinking, empower teams for success, and champion good ideas when they arise.

According to Harvard Business Review, “higher ideation rates are correlated with growth and net income, because companies with an innovation culture not only generate better ideas, but are organized and managed to act on them.”

Sean Miller, VP of Innovation Advisory at IdeaScale is responsible for helping organizations develop innovation strategies that deliver positive outcomes. “We are very excited about exploring how we can include creativity resources, best practices and training throughout our platform. Our goal has always been to help our clients create more ideas, and improving the creativity for our end users is a priority. Opioid-Related Claims Data Underscore Significance & Impact of Epidemic

Coverys, a leading provider of medical professional liability insurance, today released its latest Red Signal Report on opioids. The report analyzes five years of closed opioid-related malpractice claims to identify the major risk factors, warning signs, and safety vulnerabilities within the pain management process. Additionally, it addresses evidence-based risk recommendations and practice changes offered to improve patient safety and reduce malpractice exposure to opioid-prescribing clinicians.

A dramatic increase in opioid use over the past several decades has led to an epidemic of addiction and high-severity injuries. This growing tragedy is taking thousands of lives each year and is impacting patients, family members, and clinicians. This latest report focuses on the specific steps that relate to active pain management and associated risks that can contribute to opioid dependence and persistent use.

Key findings and recommendations from the Opioid Red Signal Report include:

  • 51% of events involved a high-severity patient injury and accounted for 85% of indemnity paid.
  • 43% of events had root-cause factors related to medication screening and prescribing.
  • 25% of events had root-cause factors related to monitoring and management.
  • 23% of events had root-cause factors related to dispensing and administering.

Strategies are included in the report, which is available to view on the Coverys website here.

This is the third report in Coverys’ ongoing Red Signal Report series. The series is designed to identify the major risk factors, claims warning signals, and safety vulnerabilities within specific specialties and clinical areas where education and practice change initiatives can improve patient safety, reduce malpractice exposures, and increase reimbursements for providers.

The report is co-authored by Ann Burke, senior director, risk management; Sharon Gilmore, senior risk specialist; Ann Lambrecht, senior risk specialist; Maryann Small, director of data governance & business analytics; and Anthony Zheng, data analyst.
