Sara Colvin’s newly released “Breaking Free” is an inspiring account of how the author recovered from drug and alcohol addiction

News Image

“Breaking Free”: a heart-touching journal focusing on one young woman’s troubled early life involving the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. “Breaking Free” is the creation of published author Sara Colvin, a woman in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. She has experienced the underworld of addiction, as well as the beautiful life which recovery will bring.

Colvin writes, “After nine and a half years of recovery, Sara had built a successful life for herself and her daughter. A life they both found rewarding, exciting, and prosperous. Until the day she relapsed into an uncontrollable addiction.

“An eighteen-month drug run came crashing to an end in the back of a police car, with Sara in shackles and handcuffs. She was sent to the county jail where she had a million-dollar bail and was facing over a dozen serious felony charges. Not knowing if she would be spending the coming years of her life as an inmate in state prison, Sara was inspired to create this personal memoir.

“‘One evening early on, I heard a voice speaking to me, “Prepare your heart to receive my gift.” I cannot explain how I recognized the voice of God. I simply knew that I was to embark upon a journey illuminated by revelation and marked by agony and ecstasy. Alone and secluded in the darkness of confinement, I committed to embark upon the path ahead.’

“Sara’s real-life account affirms that addiction is deadly, progressive, and incurable. Her experience also proves that there is a solution called recovery. Sara details both in an intensely moving memoir.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Sara Colvin’s new book shares a remarkable message to the readers that addiction is deadly, progressive, and incurable, but the only solution for it is recovery—it is available and possible for everyone, for even the lifeless among the hopeless.

With this book, Colvin lays out all her experiences in the life of who she was until she recovered from addiction so the readers will know how drugs and alcohol ruin the life of a person if not prevented.

Sunshine Coast Health Centre Announces Property Purchase Due to Expansion into Women’s Drug Rehab, Alcohol Treatment, and Trauma / PTSD Therapy

new property purchase as part of its expansion

trauma treatment programs BC

Our current expansion from men-only to treatment options for women is going very well.

Sunshine Coast Health Centre (https://www.sunshinecoasthealthcentre.ca/), a best-in-class Centre in British Columbia for drug rehab, alcohol treatment, trauma and PTSD therapy and other issues, is proud to announce a property purchase as part of its 2020 expansion from treatment for men only to treatment for women as well. The Centre has purchased property next to its existing women’s residences for space to do group activities, recreation such as digital entertainment, and the enjoyment of the outdoors. The purchased building is currently being renovated and plans are for it to be ready for usage in early 2020.

“Our current expansion from men-only to treatment options for women is going very well,” explained Casey Jordan, Chief Marketing Officer. “Obviously, our non-12 step methodology for treating alcohol, drugs, and/or trauma is relevant regardless of one’s gender. By purchasing this additional property, we’re adding to what we can offer in our best-in-class addictions and mental health programs for women.”

Persons interested in the treatment program for women suffering from drugs, alcohol, and/or trauma or PTSD should visit the website at https://www.sunshinecoasthealthcentre.ca/ and then click on the “contact” button. Information can be requested at that point. Alternatively, persons interested in the treatment philosophy and methodology are urged to visit the information pages on Non 12 Step Methodology (https://www.sunshinecoasthealthcentre.ca/non-12-step/) and trauma therapy (https://www.sunshinecoasthealthcentre.ca/trauma-program/). These pages provide an overview to the perspective of the Centre and are a starting point for understanding the Centre’s treatment philosophy. Above all, however, each woman is urged to reach out to the Centre for a consultation as no two individuals, nor their situations are exactly alike.

EXPANDING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF CANADIAN WOMEN SUFFERING FROM DRUGS, ALCOHOL, AND/OR TRAUMA

Here is background on this release. Before now, Sunshine Coast Health Centre has established a reputation as a best-in-class treatment program for drugs, alcohol, and trauma / PTSD for men only. In 2019, however, the Centre began expanding its program offerings to include programming for women. The current announcement of a new property purchase shows the Centre’s commitment to offering best-in-class drug rehab and alcohol treatment program options for women in Canada. For these reasons, Sunshine Coast Health Centre is proud to announce further expansions of its rehab programs for women.

ABOUT SUNSHINE COAST HEALTH CENTRE

Sunshine Coast Health Centre is a 47-bed drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility for men, with 8 private residences for women, that officially opened on the 15th of March 2004. The Centre has a philosophy of care that goes beyond just addiction to include personal transformation based on three key therapeutic principles: interpersonal relatedness, self definition (autonomy & competence), and intrinsic motivation. The Centre offers both drug rehabilitation and alcohol treatment near Vancouver, BC, but serving patients across Canada, particularly British Columbia and Alberta and cities such as Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer. Sunshine Coast Health Centre uses a form of drug rehabilitation based on the research of Viktor Frankl and methodology of Paul T.P. Wong, namely ‘Meaning Centered Therapy’.

Expungement Initiative to Offer Citizens A Second Chance

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority has announced a new initiative that will provide a limited number of qualifying clients who reside in Lincoln Parish the opportunity to pursue expungement with the aid of a professional attorney.

Expungement is a key component to breaking the cycle of recidivism in our community. For many individuals, a criminal record presents significant barriers to housing, employment and public benefits, which ultimately prevents them from reaching their full human potential.

“This initiative is designed to serve as a demonstration of one way that we can reach out to those who are actively seeking treatment and recovery and offer them a second chance,” said Dr. Monteic A. Sizer, executive director of Northeast Delta HSA. “Our goal is to create an opportunity for Lincoln Parish citizens who may have committed a crime under the influence of an addictive or mental health disorder to be meaningfully reintegrated back into society.”

The eligibility requirements for the initiative are as follows:

1) Any client who is currently connected to services through NEDHSA or has gone through the screening process to set an appointment with a NEDHSA clinic, AND

2) Has a criminal conviction or arrest for a misdemeanor or felony in Lincoln Parish.

“Every life has meaning and purpose beyond their criminal background,” said Attorney Kia Baldwin Richardson, Ruston, who is partnering with Northeast Delta for this initiative. “They have goals and dreams they want to fulfill, but their background check prevents employers and landlords from seeing the person they are today.”

Baldwin Richardson will be hosting an event to provide initial consultations for those interested in participating in the expungement initiative. This event will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m., at New Living Word Ministries, 1900 W. Barnett Springs Ave., Ruston, Louisiana. All clients attending the event are asked to bring a driver’s license or state-issued identification and, if possible, a copy of the court minutes showing their conviction.

“We must continue to innovate and remove obstacles from those who are committed to self-sufficiency and pursuing the American Dream,” said Sizer.

This expungement event is part of a larger workforce initiative by Northeast Delta that includes the LA-Re prison re-entry program and the Second Opportunity Workforce Solutions (SOWS) program.

Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers Announces New Annapolis Addiction Treatment Center

Wayne Sensor, CEO at Kolmac

Wayne Sensor, CEO at Kolmac

The offerings at our new Annapolis location will allow men and women to get the comprehensive care they need to recover from addiction without having to leave their everyday lives to receive inpatient care.

Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers is proud to announce that its Annapolis addiction treatment center will be the latest addition to its growing network of intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment locations. As of December 9th, Kolmac will provide comprehensive addiction treatment services at this new location.

Since 1973, Kolmac has been providing a flexible and effective IOP program. This treatment was developed by industry expert and Kolmac Chief Innovation Officer George Kolodner MD. For the last four decades, our program has helped more than 30,000 men and women achieve sobriety.

A look at Kolmac’s new Annapolis location

Much like Kolmac’s new Frederick center, this clinic location will begin by offering an evening IOP program, which is the most popular offering at Kolmac. Over time, the Annapolis location will also offer a daytime IOP program for patients who are seeking treatment outside of evening hours.

In addition, the Annapolis addiction treatment site will launch a continuing care program. The location will also offer family support resources and develop continuing care groups to meet the needs of specific populations over time.

Licensed and experienced addiction treatment professionals will staff the new Annapolis location. The center will also give patients access to an onsite psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner who can treat coexisting mental health issues during addiction treatment.

According to Kolmac CEO Wayne Sensor, “Our goal has always been to provide highly effective addiction treatment that works with our patients’ busy schedules. The offerings at our new Annapolis location will allow men and women to get the comprehensive care they need to recover from addiction without having to leave their everyday lives to receive inpatient care.”

Helping even more patients with Kolmac’s new Annapolis addiction treatment center

Kolmac selected Annapolis as the newest center location because the team realized it could help the men and women in the area who are seeking treatment for addiction. “Opioid addiction is a growing concern in Annapolis and around the United States, but addiction to alcohol and other substances is also prevalent. Kolmac is expanding its reach to help even more people take their lives back from these substances,” Sensor explains.

Ketamine Healing Clinic of Los Angeles Announces Ketamine Treatment Program for Alcoholism

News Image

I have found that heavy drinkers experienced progress after just two infusions and long-term improvement with five infusions and the usage of the spray at home. This has resulted in better interpersonal relationships and increased productivity. The benefits have been remarkable, says Dr. Mahjoubi.

At the Ketamine Healing Clinic of Los Angeles, Dr. Mahjoubi has found great success with patients struggling to break the cycle of alcohol dependence with an effective ketamine treatment program. Over 90% of his patients have either stopped or significantly reduced their drinking after completing five IV infusions and micro-dosing with an at-home ketamine nasal spray. By following his specific protocol, Dr. Mahjoubi has helped many patients with alcohol dependence have their remission last well over a year.

“I have found that heavy drinkers experienced progress after just two infusions and long-term improvement with five infusions and the usage of the spray at home. This has resulted in better interpersonal relationships with their spouses and increased productivity at work. The benefits have truly been remarkable,” says Dr. David Mahjoubi.

New studies and research are showing how intravenous ketamine therapy can significantly benefit those trying to overcome alcoholism. The mechanism by which this works is the ketamine blocking the N Methyl D Aspartate Receptor (NMDAR), which is important for reorganizing memories, which in turn influences reward centers in the brain. Ketamine can significantly help those fighting to overcome alcohol addiction stay sober and make positive changes in their lives to become healthier individuals.

More About Dr. David Mahjoubi:

David Mahjoubi, MD, is a board-certified Anesthesiologist and diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. He earned his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School and completed his residencies at UCLA Medical Center and USC-L.A. Country Hospital. He then joined the Anesthesia Group at Northridge Hospital Medical Center and became the most active user of IV ketamine for both conscious sedation and general anesthesia cases. Dr. Mahjoubi carries over a decade of experience with intravenous ketamine, dating back to 2007. Ketamine Healing Clinic of Los Angeles was founded in 2014 and provides highly effective treatment plans for patients suffering from alcoholism, depression, anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain, including CRPS.

The Ketamine Healing Clinic of Los Angeles is located at 1762 Westwood Blvd, Suite 320 in Los Angeles, CA. Contact the clinic to schedule a consultation, and begin your journey to a life free from alcohol addiction with a safe, effective ketamine treatment program from Dr. David Mahjoubi.

Heroin’s Grip Documentary Changes Attitudes about Addiction

Shannon mourns the loss of her 17 year old daughter.

“The film is changing attitudes about addiction. It changed mine; I used to say ‘It’s not my problem.'”

ConjoStudios, LLC announced today that the powerful documentary film, Heroin’s Grip – Stories from the front lines of the opioid crisis, recently released on Prime Video, is changing attitudes about addiction. One viewer wrote: “This movie will change your life. You will never look at addiction the same. Everyone should see this!”

“It changed my attitude,” says Maryland filmmaker and director of Heroin’s Grip, Conrad Weaver, “I used to say ‘It’s not my problem.’ But after working on the film, that has changed, and my goal is now to help people understand that the opioid crisis is ‘our problem’ and we all have a responsibility to help solve it.”

Weaver hopes that releasing it on Prime Video will help reach a wider audience who may not completely understand the impact addiction has on individuals, families, and communities. “The film shows the complete story. People who have watched it say they now have a much better understanding of the problem and their responsibility to their friends and neighbors caught in addiction’s grip.”

The highly anticipated national release of the award-winning film caps a year of screenings in select theaters and at special events, including a recent screening on Capitol Hill for members of Congress hosted by Maryland Congressmen, Jamie Raskin and David Trone. “Heroin’s Grip presents the unvarnished truth, humanizing this epidemic through the real stories of our family, friends, and neighbors.” – Rep. David Trone.

A number of nationally-recognized leaders in the addiction and recovery community have endorsed the film, including John Shinholser, President of the McShinn Foundation who says the film is, “The best current film about opiate addiction and the family/community impact.”

Ryan Hampton, national advocate & author of “American Fix: Inside the Opioid Addiction Crisis—and How to End It” says, “Heroin’s Grip does a great job of helping the viewer better understand addiction and its consequences, and it shows that recovery is possible when a community comes together to reduce stigma and provide resources for those caught in addiction’s grip.”

Heroin’s Grip is available to rent or buy on Prime Video in the United States and in the United Kingdom and will soon be available world-wide on other platforms. Weaver plans on donating a portion of the profits the film generates to organizations helping people get into recovery programs.

Eolas Therapeutics Announce Initiation of a Phase I Clinical Trial for AZD4041, an Orexin-1 Receptor Antagonist for Smoking Cessation

Eolas Therapeutics Inc. today announced the initiation of a Phase I study of AZD4041 for treating tobacco use and dependence. The study will investigate safety and pharmacokinetics (PK) of AZD4041 in healthy volunteers. AZD4041 is a central nervous system (CNS) penetrant antagonist of orexin-1 (hypocretin-1) receptors that is being developed in collaboration with AstraZeneca.

“Smoking-related diseases are directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in the United States each year,” said Paul Kenny, PhD, co-founder of Eolas Therapeutics and Chair of the Nash Family Department of Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “We are committed to advancing AZD4041 through clinical development as rapidly as possible to help treat tobacco use and dependence.”

Approximately 80% of smokers relapse within the first month of quitting. The orexin-1 receptor is thought to play an important role in the addiction-related actions of nicotine and other drugs of abuse, and blockade of this receptor reduces nicotine-seeking behaviors in rodents and primates.

“Addictive behaviours relating to tobacco use and, more broadly, to disorders such as opioid use disorder affect not only individuals but also their families, and there is potential for new medicines to help address these behaviors. The Phase I trial for AZD4041 is an exciting opportunity to investigate the potential of this molecule,” said Iain Chessell, Head of Neuroscience, BioPharmaceuticals R&D, AstraZeneca.

AZD4041 is being developed in partnership with the Blueprint Neurotherapeutics (BPN) Network and with substantial support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under grant number U01NS083614. The BPN network is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative managed by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) that provides non-dilutive support for small molecule drug discovery and development. Healthy volunteers will be treated initially with a single dose of AZD4041. The study endpoints will be safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics.

“There are opportunities for new therapeutics for people with addiction to nicotine and other drugs. The orexin antagonists show promise and AZD4041 will move ahead on the clinical development pathway” said Charles L. Cywin, Ph.D., NINDS Program Director of BPN.

About tobacco use and dependence

Tobacco use and dependence is a chronic, relapsing disorder driven by addiction to nicotine. Though a majority of adults who smoke report wanting to quit, less than 10% report successful quitting in the last year. The burden of disease and negative economic impact of tobacco use on society is staggering. It is predicted that ~0.6 billion current smokers worldwide will die from smoking-related illnesses, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

About Eolas Therapeutics

Eolas Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company developing novel drug candidates for the treatment of substance use disorder and other psychiatric disorders. The company’s lead drug candidate, AZD4041, is a novel orexin-1 receptor antagonist that is being developed for the treatment of addiction to nicotine and other drugs of abuse. If shown to be safe and with a favorable PK profile, AZD4041 will be advanced to a Phase 2 pivotal study to determine its actions on core symptoms of tobacco use disorder. Orange County Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center Launch Naloxone Outreach Program for Harm Reduction

American Addiction Institute of Mind and Medicine

“We hope to expand our Naloxone distribution and play an increasingly large role in limiting overdose deaths in Orange County.” – Dr. Faried Banimahd MD, CEO

The Harm Reduction Institute (HRI) as a part of the American Addiction Institute of Mind and Medicine, an Orange County drug and alcohol rehab center and non-profit Intensive outpatient after care (IOP), has officially launched its Naloxone Outreach Program! Members of their team conducted street outreach, trained, and distributed Naloxone amongst members of the own community in Orange County, CA.

They hope to expand their Naloxone distribution and play an increasingly large role in limiting overdose deaths in Orange County. They intend to do this by promoting harm reduction concepts including but not limited to: Hepatitis C testing and referral to treatment, addiction service referrals, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and chronic disease care education and referrals.

In addition to equipping the local community members to be life savers, outreach allows their team to understand the needs and conditions of our community’s most marginalized members and thus better serve them.

American Addiction Institute of Mind and Medicine has recently formed its own harm reduction program to cast a wider and more effective net to improve the health of people suffering from addiction. HRI strives to meet the most marginalized and ostracized members of our community where they are at in life and provide judgement-free, empathetic, supportive, and needed medical outreach to mitigate the greater health and social consequences of addiction. They contend that providing harm reduction services amid the largest opiate epidemic in our nation’s history will: improve public health, build a supportive and loving community, and achieve superior health care outcomes with respect to addiction. HRI’s focus is keeping our patients as healthy as possible so they can enter addiction treatment when they are ready.

If you would like to be trained on or possess Naloxone, please contact Mahan Naeim, HRI’s Clinical Operations Director at mahan@caimm.org with any questions.
