These new training courses help those in the transportation industry understand the process and appropriate circumstances for drug and alcohol testing.

Mastery Training Services released two new training courses related to drug and alcohol testing and reasonable suspicion in the transportation industry.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about 28 people in the United States die in drunk driving crashes every day. To help ensure drivers of commercial vehicles stay drug and alcohol-free behind the wheel, the Federal Transportation Employee Testing Act requires motor carriers to establish rigorous drug and alcohol testing programs. These new training courses help those in the transportation industry understand the process and appropriate circumstances for drug and alcohol testing.

The first course is “Reasonable Suspicion Drug And Alcohol Testing For Managers And Supervisors.” This course explores the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration guidelines to help supervisors decide whether they ought to refer an employee for immediate drug and alcohol testing using reasonable suspicion as the basis for the referral. The course demonstrates how to recognize signs and symptoms of substance abuse, and how to approach an employee suspected to be abusing drugs or alcohol.

The second course, “Drug And Alcohol Testing For CDL Drivers,” teaches CDL drivers about drug and alcohol testing and the role it plays in keeping everyone safe on the roadway. The course explores the federal regulations mandating drug and alcohol testing for all transportation employees, including when testing is conducted, removal of employees, return-to-duty rules, and getting help for substance abuse.

These new courses are presented in HD-video and include closed captioning. These courses are available for purchase on a single play, pay-per-view basis on mastery.com or as part of a licensed library at an employer rate.

These courses are also available in Mastery Training Services’ library of over 1,700 online training courses, which covers a range of topics from safety to business skills, leadership, and computer skills. About Phoenix Foundation of Maryland

In the Spring of 2018–inspired by the endless tragedies in their community and the film Anonymous People and Generation Found, a group of residents in Frederick, Maryland recognized the need for safe educational and social options for young people beginning their journey in recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders. Operating on the principles that schools offer safe harbor for the recovery lifestyle, while providing a quality education as a nonpublic school approved by Maryland State Department of Education, the founders investigated recovery high schools in other cities, and met with the National Association for Recovery Schools, to determine goals and strategy. Phoenix Recovery Academy is located at 117 East Church Street, in a building leased to them by the Ausherman Family Foundation. The school opened in the Fall of 2020.

Research Study Finds Three in Five Respondents Are Not Confident in the Effectiveness of Their Organization’s Drug Diversion Program

Invistics, the leading provider of cloud-based software solutions that improve inventory visibility and analytics across complex healthcare systems and global supply chains, has released a new study on the state of drug diversion in America. The term “drug diversion” refers to crimes that involve a prescription medication — including drug-seeking behaviors, corrupt prescribing practices and the theft of drugs by healthcare workers. The survey, conducted by Porter Research, focused on the theft of drugs by healthcare workers. Results show that nearly all healthcare professionals agree that drug diversion is occurring frequently in healthcare facilities across the country.

COVID-19 has made the problem worse. Nearly half (47%) of all survey respondents reported that staff turnover due to the pandemic made it more challenging to track drug diversion and 38% said that resources for drug diversion investigations were reallocated due to budget cuts. Additionally, more than half of those surveyed (59%) said that they plan to enhance or strengthen their organization’s existing drug diversion prevention efforts, due to COVID vaccine distribution concerns and the ongoing opioid crisis.

“Looking at this year’s survey data compared to past surveys, drug diversion is clearly still a concern across the healthcare industry — and the pandemic has only exacerbated that issue,” said Cynthia Porter, CEO of Porter Research. “With the effects of the pandemic appearing to wane, hospitals and health systems should consider reinvesting in their drug diversion programs to address this ongoing issue.”

Other key findings:

  • Nearly all respondents (96%) agreed that drug diversion is occurring in hospitals across the United States 73% agreed that most drug diversion goes undetected and 82% reported they know or have met someone who has diverted drugs.
  • More than one-third of respondents reported that drug diversion prevention and detection is a higher priority now than it was in 2019. One in three respondents said they are more concerned about drug diversion in 2021 as it relates to the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Of the healthcare professional surveyed, 94% agreed that drug diversion negatively impacts quality of care, 96% agree that it has an adverse impact on patient safety and 96% agree that drug diversion jeopardizes compliance and puts organizations at risk.
  • Three-quarters (73%) rated machine learning as an effective tool in identifying or preventing drug diversion — up from 65% in 2019. Additionally, those reporting that they use machine learning in their drug prevention program increased from 29% in 2019 to 44% in 2021.
  • Nearly half (48%) of those surveyed said 10% or less of drug diversion investigations resulted in a confirmed diversion — up from 37% in 2019. Only 13% said that more than half of drug diversion investigations resulted in a confirmed diversion — down from 23% in 2019.

“The past year and a half has been difficult on hospitals, health systems and other healthcare organizations across the industry — to say the least. Many healthcare facilities have had to reduce their focus on drug diversion prevention in order to prioritize treating patients with COVID-19 and administering COVID-19 vaccines,” said Tom Knight, CEO of Invistics. “With COVID-19 cases going down in the U.S., it’s encouraging to see that drug diversion is becoming a bigger priority for healthcare leaders and that more organizations are starting to utilize machine learning in their drug diversion programs.”

Survey Methodology

Two-hundred healthcare professionals were surveyed between February and April 2021, 190 of whom have a diversion program at their healthcare facility. Survey participants included directors of pharmacy, nursing executives, compliance executives and drug diversion specialists. Porter Research completed this study on behalf of Invistics.

Invistics’ solution, called Flowlytics®, tracks the movement of drugs across the complex supply chain — from the time they are shipped from the wholesaler to a healthcare facility, then each time drugs are moved throughout the hospital and administered to patients. Shining a Light on Workforce Addiction

Substance misuse has skyrocketed because of COVID-19 both at home and in the workplace. Today there are more than 21 million people with substance abuse disorders and of those 70% are employed, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSA).

The rise of substance misuse in the workplace costs the US economy over $740B annually in lost productivity and healthcare costs. As the world begins to emerge from the ravages of the pandemic, more people are returning to onsite work. ICARE’s certification programs offer a meaningful path back into the workforce for individuals recovering from substance use disorders.

The American Medical Association and other reputable organizations recognize addiction as a medical disease that is preventable and treatable. This diagnosis mandates employers provide employees with accommodations to deal with substance disorders.

Stigma plays an enormous role in keeping people addicted – ICARE’s programs are designed to reduce stigma and educate and empower those struggling with substance misuse. Consonant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, ICARE advocates that workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts acknowledge employees in recovery.

In response to COVID, ICARE has launched a vital initiative called Strategic Sobriety Workforce Solutions, which includes access to an online Addiction Risk Assessment for use by employers and benefit companies. In addition, ICARE has expanded its training and certification programs with two new offerings: Addiction Awareness Facilitator training and Designated Corporate Recovery Coaches to serve the business community. ICARE’s first cohort of Awareness Facilitators is currently working in the field delivering experiential addiction awareness presentations tailored to adult prevention and early intervention for community groups and regional businesses.

Ideal Option Approaches One Year Mark of Fighting a Worsening Opioid Epidemic in Sebastian County

Ideal Option, a national leader in outpatient medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioids, alcohol, methamphetamine and other substances, opened its first Arkansas clinic in Fort Smith in June of 2020, shortly after the start of the pandemic.

As the pandemic worsened last year and residents suffered personal hardships such as illness, isolation, and loss of income, the opioid epidemic was also worsening in Sebastian County. Opioid-related overdose deaths increased by 220% from 2019 to 2020 – one of the sharpest increases in the state according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

Now that the pandemic is winding down and demand for treatment is rising, low-barrier access to evidence-based addiction medicine services in Fort Smith and surrounding communities is urgently needed. According to the Arkansas Opioid Response Dashboard, only five addiction treatment facilities are located in Sebastian County with just two locations offering medication-assisted treatment.

“Fentanyl has just surpassed methamphetamine as the leading cause of overdose death in Arkansas. Our own lab data confirms a steady increase in the use of fentanyl beginning shortly after the pandemic disrupted the normal supply chain of illicit drugs,” stated Tim Kilgallon, CEO of Ideal Option. “Fentanyl use disorder is one of the most complicated to treat, requiring advanced clinical protocols and medical expertise. We are excited to provide such a specialized treatment program for fentanyl to the community of Fort Smith.”

Conveniently located less than a mile from Baptist Health Hospital, Ideal Option is one of the only MAT providers in the area to accept Medicaid and BCBS.

The clinic is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is located at 1100 Lexington Ave, Suite 400 Fort Smith, AR 72901. Patients can make an appointment by calling 1.877.522.1275 or visiting http://www.idealoption.com.

About Ideal Option

Headquartered in Kennewick, Washington, Ideal Option was founded in 2012 and has since helped nearly 45,000 patients through a network of over 65 office-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinics across 10 states. With a mission to serve under-served communities, Ideal Option accepts all forms of insurance including Medicaid and Medicare. Financial assistance and payment plans are also available.

Ideal Option’s team of medical providers carry certifications in Addiction and Emergency Medicine, Internal, OB/GYN, and Family Medicine, among other specialties. The company also employs social workers, caseworkers, counselors, and mental health practitioners. This holistic approach helps drive positive outcomes, including family stability, stable housing, improved overall health, and reduced rates of recidivism.

In all the communities it serves, Ideal Option collaborates with existing stakeholders and providers to improve the continuum of care. This approach includes partnerships with emergency rooms and county jail systems, where individuals with substance use disorder often appear, as well as collaborating with numerous support agencies and municipal programs addressing social needs such as housing, mental health, and nutrition support.

Workit Health Receives Grant Funding from OhioMHAS to Expand Innovative Telemedicine Addiction Treatment

With the fourth-highest drug overdose rate in the country, innovative digital programs are needed in Ohio more than ever.

Workit Health, the nation’s leading provider of telemedicine addiction care, announced that it has been awarded funding through the Ohio State Opioid Response (SOR) 2.0 program. The funding, made available by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) and Recovery Ohio, will be used to help communities continue to fight against opioid addiction and prevent overdose deaths.

Workit Health has been awarded the funds under the ‘Use of Innovation’ category. Grantees in this category will support technology development and advance innovation in Ohio’s behavioral health care delivery system. Workit’s digital addiction care program leverages technology to expand access to evidence-based treatment, and this funding will expand treatment services for commonly co-occurring physical and behavioral health conditions including Hepatitis C. Workit’s comprehensive treatment programs meet members where they are and deliver improved long-term health outcomes.

“This federal funding will expand our ability to work with local community partners and use innovative means of technology to support Ohioans in need and on their recovery journeys, especially as we work through the impact of the pandemic on the mental health and substance use treatment needs,” said Governor Mike DeWine.

“With the fourth-highest drug overdose rate in the country, innovative digital programs are needed in Ohio more than ever,” said Robin McIntosh, Workit Health’s Co-Founder and Co-CEO. “We are grateful to have the support of OhioMHAS and Recovery Ohio to support our rapid expansion within the state.”

“A year into the pandemic, we’re still seeing its effects in increased overdose rates and reduced capacity in traditional systems of care,” said Paul Leonard, Workit Health’s Chief Medical Officer. “This funding will ensure we’re meeting Ohio’s demand for telemedicine addiction care.”

“We’re seeing a real need for our services from our local communities in Ohio, and are proud to partner with local hospitals, traditional treatment centers, and practitioners to ensure quick access to Workit Health’s evidence-based care,” said Thasia Award, Workit Health’s Clinical Site Director in Ohio.

“While the pandemic has rightfully been front and center in everyone’s minds, the opioid epidemic hasn’t gone away – it persists as a threat to our citizens and our communities,” said OhioMHAS Director Lori Criss. “This funding will help local partners like Workit Health connect even more Ohioans to treatment and recovery services and support their use of new technology and innovation to stem the tide of addiction and overdose deaths.”

Workit Health joins 20 other county mental health and addiction services boards and local providers in leveraging technology to combat the opioid crisis in Ohio. The funding comes at a time when many communities are experiencing increased demand for behavioral health services amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since Workit expanded its services to Ohio in January, it’s coverage has grown to more than 5.6 million Ohioans across all lines of business. Through Workit Health’s web and phone apps, individuals can meet with licensed clinicians and counselors, join online recovery groups, and receive FDA-approved medication for opioid use disorder prescribed through their local pharmacy.
