Crushing The 2021 Recovery Month With Help From The Experts In Addiction Treatments

Crushing The 2021 Recovery Month With Help From The Experts In Addiction Treatments

Crushing The 2021 Recovery Month With Help From The Experts In Addiction Treatments

everyone plays a major role in increasing awareness and encouraging the importance of understanding substance abuse and mental disorders

Understanding Recovery Month

Millions of Americans have successfully transformed their lives through drug recovery. These successful cases go unnoticed by the majority of the population most of the time, however. Recovery Month provides the perfect vehicle for everyone to celebrate these achievements. Thousands of prevention, treatment, and recovery facilities around the nation promote and celebrate Recovery Month each September by sharing the accomplishments made by those in recovery with the community. This way, everyone plays a major role in increasing awareness and encouraging the importance of understanding substance abuse and mental disorders.

Overdose Statistics In The United States

Overdose deaths increased significantly in almost every state during 2020. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 28 states had more than a 30 percent increase in overdose deaths in 2020 compared to 2019, including 10 states that increased by more than 40 percent. Pandemic lockdowns made getting treatment difficult and unfortunately contributed to the number of Americans who died of drug overdoses last year, as many recovering addicts have relapsed during these events. Data shows that opioids were involved in 74.7 percent of overdose deaths, rising to 69,710 in 2020 from 50,963 in 2019. Preliminary data shows that 418 overdose deaths occurred during the first three months of 2021 compared to 378 overdose deaths in the first three months of 2020. 46 percent of these deaths are linked to fentanyl.

Alcohol & Drug Abuse Trends In Arizona

One of the most devastating drug and alcohol abuse trends in Arizona is the rapid rise in deaths caused by opioid overdose. Over 3 Arizonans a day have perished from opioid overdose in the last two years. From all types of opioids that we find to have contributed to this alarming rise in deaths, Fentanyl was the most commonly used painkillers in 2019-2020. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, and has greatly contributed to the majority of deaths caused by overdose. Arizona is also seeing a rise in the use of methamphetamines, and tranquilizer drugs such as Xanax. COVID-19-related stress has also played a significant role in the number of substance abuse deaths that have occurred in Arizona this year.

Tombo’s newly released “Wings of Love and Support” is an encouraging collection of reflections and devotions intended to assist those in recovery from addiction

News Image

“Wings of Love and Support”: an encouraging and inspiring arrangement of writings. “Wings of Love and Support” is the creation of published author Tombo, a native of Wisconsin who retired to Arizona after working in education for thirty years.

Tombo shares, “Smokers who quit cannot undo all the damage done to their lungs. But they can reduce the problems in the future. Knowing there will be future benefits from not smoking should inspire them to quit the habit. The future can be changed, but the past has to be accepted. When the habit is kicked, so should guilt and regret for past actions be kicked from our memory. Concentration should be on the future and not what has happened in the past.

“Our Higher Power and the group allow do-overs just like kids do in a game. The people in the meeting will love and support the new us with open arms. Their strength and guidance is available many hours a day. Neither night nor day, summer nor winter, nor past practices will be obstacles from receiving help from our fellow recovering addicts. They have an inexhaustible supply of love ready to be given as needed. All we need to do is ask.

“Once we ask for help, change can occur. That change will affect the outcome of our life. Our past will no longer be relevant to our future. Only our present effort will be counted.

“Start today by forgetting the past. Focus on your recovery and change your future. Seek help and active support to make that vital change. Pray, read the Combo Book and other uplifting materials, seek assistance from friends, and begin the task of changing your old habits. Replace those old negative habits with fresh new vibrant and positive habits. It’s never too late!”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Tombo’s new book is presented in hopes of reaching those who need help focusing on the future and forgiving the past.

Tombo’s personal experiences with addiction and the gentle guidance received through twelve-step programs has culminated in this helpful and hopeful tome.

How COVID Reshaped Returning to Work for DOT Modes

COVID has reshaped the transportation industry landscape of drug and alcohol violations as its workers’ return to duty. During the height of the pandemic in 2020, American Substance Abuse Professionals (ASAP) analyzed data from all their incoming violations. They saw a 22% increase in drug and alcohol testing violations for Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), while other modes showed a significant average decrease of 34%. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) showed a decline of 22% in 2020 with a trend upward of 17% in 2021. Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is steadily inclining after hiring back thousands of employees that were terminated in 2020. As 2021 is settling in, the overall DOT cases are up by 16%.

Self-referrals and Management Referrals Decline

Another significant decline was in self-referrals or self-disclosing of drug and/or alcohol use. This mostly occurs under company policies, i.e., non-DOT cases. This area declined by 17% and management referrals decreased by 4% in 2020. With the spotlight on increased mental health issues throughout the world, this statistic would be anticipated to increase. However, with employers being overwhelmed with workloads and less staff and employees fearing the loss of their employment if they step forward, there has been a decline in those seeking help. As transportation slowly moves toward a new normal, there has been a significant increase in these areas for 2021 with self-referrals up 26% and management referrals increasing 18%.

Follow-up Testing

When an employee fails a DOT drug or alcohol test, they are required to go through the DOT Return to Duty (RTD) process. The employee is immediately removed from safety-sensitive duty and is required to meet with a qualified DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for an evaluation, successfully comply with the recommendations from the SAP, and then return for a final evaluation with the same SAP. Once the process is completed, the employee is still required to pass an observed RTD DOT drug test before returning to safety-sensitive duty and the employer follows the SAPs follow-up testing schedule for continued testing thereafter. In 2020, only 5% of follow-up testing was completed as employers struggled to get testing completed due to lay-offs, COVID effects on collection sites and concern about sending employees for testing. As employers attempt to catch up on the SAPs recommended testing schedules, there has been a 91% increase in 2021 for follow-up testing. This is a good sign that employees are getting back to work. However, there was still a 26% increase in positivity for 2020 and trending toward 14% for 2021, noting that there is still a need to continue to protect public and workplace safety while promoting treatment and recovery.

American Substance Abuse Professionals, Inc. (ASAP) offers SAP and substance abuse evaluation services to all employers with drug use employment policies and specializing in companies regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). ASAP’s mission is to protect public safety and help employers maintain a drug-free workplace while promoting a safe work environment. Our success rate in returning employees back to work drug-free is 86%. Visit American Substance Abuse Professionals for more information. Work safely.

Ideal Option’s own lab data showed a 104% increase in fentanyl use among enrolling patients nationwide from January 2020 to June 2021.

Innovative Medical Detox Treatment for Fentanyl Clinically Shown to Reduce Opioid Withdrawal Symptoms, Treatment Duration

News Image

The results of this new fentanyl detox program are ground breaking, as it addresses many of the concerns patients have in starting their journey to lifelong recovery.

Gallus Medical Detox Centers (Gallus), a national leading inpatient drug and alcohol medical detox services provider, announces today the launch of a new inpatient medical detoxification protocol for fentanyl that has been clinically shown to reduce withdrawal symptoms, shorten treatment time and help patients successfully detox in order to transition to treatment and long-term recovery.

Patients using the new accelerated micro induction (AMI) protocol for opioid use disorder (OUD) with fentanyl reported a significantly lower Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale score (COWS), an 11-item scale designed to help clinicians determine the severity of opiate withdrawal (1). Gallus found that the new treatment process lowered COWS scores an average of 4.4 points, or 42% a day, over the three days prior to full induction. Patient treatment time was also reduced by 15%.

“The results of this new fentanyl detox program are ground breaking, as it addresses many of the concerns patients have in starting their journey to lifelong recovery,” says Shannon Weir, RN, Director of Clinical Education and Quality Assurance at Gallus. “Continuous improvement of our evidence-based medical detox protocols, combined with an ongoing commitment to prepare patients for aftercare treatment, provides a solid foundation for recovery.”

In addition to the Gallus Method achieving dramatic improvement in managing withdrawal symptoms, new patient research is showing a clinically and statistically significant decrease in depression, an average drop of 5.88 points, during inpatient medical detox treatment as measured using the PHQ-9.

Currently, Gallus’ rate of patient transition to aftercare is 85%, as compared to estimates of 15% when detox services are provided in a hospital setting. This new AMI protocol is expected to increase the number of patients who enter OUD treatment as well as aftercare.

“Gallus’ decade of medical experience and front-line exposure to evolving SUD trends affords us the unique ability to focus on continually improving treatment outcomes,” said Doug Weiss, President & CEO of Gallus. “By using our expertise and knowledge of how substances impact our patients, we can fulfill our commitment to excellence in providing patients with safe, comfortable and effective medical detox treatment as the first step in their recovery journey.”

Gallus Medical Detox Centers’ evidence-based medical detox services for substance use disorders include alcohol, opioid, benzodiazepines, stimulants, polysubstance and others. It also has the expertise to treat patients with acute substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health or chronic physical conditions.

The Gallus AMI treatment protocol is being offered at its locations in Scottsdale, Arizona and Littleton, Colorado. For those who are seeking professional help to treat a substance use disorder, please visit gallusdetox.com or call 888-306-3122 for Admissions. Workit Health Expands Digital Addiction and Mental Health Care to Oregon

Hands holding phone with Workit Health app onboarding screen on green background

The Workit app makes recovery accessible.

Today, Workit Health, the nation’s leading provider of virtual addiction care, announced the expansion of its program to provide care for opioid and alcohol use disorders, along with co-occurring conditions, to the state of Oregon. Through Workit’s mobile and web apps, people struggling with addiction in Oregon will be able to receive insurance-covered clinical and counseling services.

“Oregon saw a nearly 40% increase in overdose death rates in 2020, one of the largest increases in the nation,” said Robin McIntosh, Workit Health’s Co-CEO. “Last year was the deadliest in America’s history for overdose deaths. Enough is enough. Simple, effective solutions like Workit Health save lives.”

Medication like buprenorphine is the gold standard of care for opioid use disorder, but several counties in Oregon lack a single buprenorphine provider. Workit Health allows anyone in the state who is ready for help to connect with a licensed clinician via video visit, allowing people to quickly access care from the privacy of home. Workit Health also provides medication for alcohol use disorder, as well as many co-occurring disorders like anxiety, depression, Hepatitis C, and HIV prevention (PrEP). The Workit program is harm reduction-based, meaning that individuals define their own recovery.

“The passing of Measure 110 in Oregon last fall was a major win for harm reduction and drug policy,” said Lisa McLaughlin, Workit Health’s Co-CEO. “But successfully moving away from criminalization requires treatment options that are readily available and affordable, like Workit Health.”

Workit Health was founded in 2015 by Robin McIntosh and Lisa McLaughlin, two women in long-term recovery from addiction themselves. Robin and Lisa experienced America’s broken addiction treatment system firsthand, and this spurred them to leave successful Silicon Valley careers to build a better type of recovery experience, Workit Health. Since its founding, the company has expanded its clinical program into six states, has a team of over 150+ recovery experts, and is set to continue its rapid expansion to meet demand for digital care.

About Workit Health:

Workit Health is an addiction healthcare B-corporation offering online, on-demand evidence-based addiction treatment including telehealth medication for opioid use disorder. Workit Health partners with healthcare organizations to deliver an innovative digital health solution that blends the best of human-centered design, technology, and science. Through mobile and web apps, members meet with clinicians and Master’s level coaches and complete self-set recovery goals. Workit Health offers 24/7 recovery that fits into daily life, designed by experts. Learn more at workithealth.com.

Dr. Jackson currently serves as the Region VIII Director on the national ASAM Board of Directors.

“At Lakeside Milam, I have found a place where I can provide low barrier, compassionate care for patients with substances use disorders and to educate families and the community to remove stigma. We must love and support patients with substance use disorders. Punishment and shame do not heal,” said Dr. Jackson. “I’m excited to begin working with the staff at Lakeside Milam to achieve these goals.”
