“At SHRM, our goal is to show that workplace environments with belonging and mental health support are good for employees and organizations. It’s never been more important to build inclusive, empathetic and supportive workplace cultures given the current mental health crisis,” said Taylor.

The Greater Orlando Society for Human Resource Management (GOSHRM) will host its first Mental Health Forum on Tuesday, January 24 at the Wyndham Orlando Resort and Conference Center in Kissimmee, FL. The Forum is “A Well-being Gut Check” for HR and medical professionals seeking best practices to tackle mental health challenges in today’s stressful, post-pandemic workplace.

GOSHRM’s goal in presenting the Mental Health Forum is to provide increased awareness and support for mental health concerns plaguing the current workforce. This highly anticipated event has limited capacity of 250 attendees and is expected to sell out. Attendees receive 4.5 SHRM and HRCI recertification credits. Register here.

The theme was carefully chosen by GOSHRM’s Board of Directors because of increased concerns and stigma associated with mental health issues on the job. “There is a real hesitancy among the HR community to talk openly about these issues,” said GOSHRM President, Pamela J. McGee, SHRM-SCP, PHR, MBA. “Our Mental Health Forum is designed to help break the silence and create a workplace culture that supports those who struggle.”

The January 24th event features a celebrity keynote, an intimate fireside chat and power-packed panel sessions from a diverse group of distinguished subject matter experts. During his Keynote address, SHRM President and CEO, Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, will talk about “Workplace Culture: Caring About the Whole Self.”

“At SHRM, our goal is to show that workplace environments with belonging and mental health support are good for both employees and organizations. It’s never been more important to build inclusive, empathetic and supportive workplace cultures given the current mental health crisis happening right now,” said Taylor. “Since we began this conversation last year, I am proud that SHRM and the SHRM foundation have taken this commitment forward. We aim to move the conversation into action—working toward solutions for a better tomorrow for all. Success and the ability to thrive demands that workplaces support and take seriously belonging and mental health.”

The program will be emceed by motivational humorist Jon Petz who will also host a fireside chat on mental health. Other highlights of the day include a session on “The Opioid Crisis & the Workforce: How You Can Help” presented by Andre Bailey, Dr. Kendall Cortelyou and Amber Addario of Project Opioid. GOSHRM Past President, Cheryl Brown Merriwether, and Executive Director of the International Center for Addiction and Recovery Education (ICARE), will moderate a panel on “Creating a Community of Care: Mental & Behavioral Health Trends for the Post-Pandemic Workforce”. Panelists include Tony Jenkins (Florida Blue), Dr. Nick Dewan (Guidewell) and Ashley Grimes (NAMI).

Visit GOSHRM’s website here for the complete speaker schedule.

GOSHRM Celebrates Award-Winning 2022 with Focus on Opioid Addiction in the Workplace

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports over 107,000 Americans died of an overdose in the 12 months ending December 2021. 70% of illicit drug users are employed, and 67% of HR managers admit that substance misuse is a serious problem in the workplace.

Motivated by these startling statistics, GOSHRM submitted for and won both SHRM’s 2022 Pinnacle Award and the HR Florida Chapter Excellence Award. These unprecedented accomplishments recognized GOSHRM at both the national and state level. The winning program was a collaborative effort between GOSHRM, ICARE, Project Opioid and CareerSource Central Florida to raise awareness and mitigate opioid addiction in the workforce.

Project Opioid partnered with CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF), a local workforce board, to provide training to local businesses in Central Florida. In March of 2021, CSCF launched “Fostering Opioid Recovery through Training & Employment” (FORTE). CSCF contracted with ICARE to design, develop and deliver the Certified Facilitator in Addiction Awareness for Human Resources (CFAA-HR) program. To ensure the success of this critical project, ICARE reached out to GOSHRM for assistance.

Covid was hugely challenging for GOSHRM, according to GOSHRM Past President Merriwether, “Being able to partner with other community-based organizations to impact individual lives, (and by extension families, workplaces and our community at large) helped us pull together, commit to, promote, participate in and celebrate our collaborative accomplishments,” she said. “Together we created something of significance that had a positive impact, that was recognized at both the state level by the HR Florida Chapter Excellence award and nationally by SHRM through the Pinnacle Award.”

The FORTE initiative continues into 2023, and as a result of the community collaboration, and has expanded beyond Central Florida to an international level.

GOSHRM President’s Vision for 2023

“My goal for GOSHRM is to guide the organization to be the leading HR point of contact for Central Florida to bring HR professionals and business leaders together to elevate the HR profession,” said GOSHRM President, McGee. “An example of this was our Pinnacle Award winning collaboration with Project Opioid, CareerSource Central Florida and ICARE. We will continue to look for other opportunities to collaborate and impact our community in 2023.”

NEDHSA seeks to inspire region through “Sour Grapes” stageplay

NEDHSA seeks to inspire region through “Sour Grapes” stageplay

NEDHSA seeks to inspire region through “Sour Grapes” stageplay

“We believe there is medicine in creative expression, and the arts can help a person come alive in ways traditional treatment options can’t,” Dr. Sizer said.

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) and Christal Wheeler Productions are partnering to produce two showings of “Sour Grapes,” a show made up of three short stories all based on the same theme, “Generational Curses: How we deal with them and God’s grace for us.” The theatrical production is set for Saturday, January 28, with the performances starting at 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., at the Jack Howard Theatre in Monroe. Both shows are free.

The production is part of NEDHSA’s Faith-Based initiative, which provides in-depth training in four key areas: Awareness, Readiness, Development and Sustainability. NEDHSA’s Faith-Based initiative works collectively and one-on-one with faith leaders and congregations to help develop and expand ministerial capacity so that addictive and mental health disorders can be comprehensively addressed regionally.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A Sizer said the agency, “intends to help make Northeast Louisiana a regional creative hub, a preferred destination that will generate much-needed regional economic development, diversity, job creation, and more.”

“We must do different things to educate, engage and inspire the public,” Dr. Sizer said. “We’re helping people in our region to understand addiction and mental health issues with this innovative prevention approach. We want them to understand that all people have value and potential. This production is designed to challenge us, sadden us, and motivate us towards collective action.”

“We believe there is medicine in creative expression, and the arts can help a person come alive in ways traditional treatment options can’t,” Dr. Sizer said. “We intend to help create an environment where dreams are realized, families are strong, bodies are healthy, community institutions are thriving, and spirits are renewed.”

NEDHSA chose Christal Wheeler’s “Sour Grapes” script because of the impact of generational curses can have on mental health and addiction disorders. Additionally, Wheeler is engaging at-risk youth and young adults in the production, allowing them to learn and develop vocational and life skills by producing a feature-length play.

She said her production studio likes to make its audiences think, “why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

“This show is an original, heartfelt, raw body of work inspired by Jeremiah 31:30,” Wheeler said. “It takes a creative spin on traditional theatre and unapologetically introduces the topic of generational curses and how we deal with them.”

Wheeler said that attendees will be “uplifted and encouraged through the three Acts as we explore the highs and lows of life.”

“Each Act shares a different story with different characters and perspectives,” Wheeler said. “Having multiple storylines increases the chances of audience members identifying with the theme and ultimately seeing themselves in some way.”

Wheeler added, “We promise a unique and uplifting experience for all who attend.”

The additional employees are part of Soul Surgery’s ongoing efforts to expand staffing to help as many people become recovered as possible. Faces & Voices of Recovery Issues Urgent Call to Action

“If its recommendations are heeded, this seminal report could well be a milestone in the future of recovery community organizations and peer recovery support services.” – William L. White

“Unlocking the Potential of Recovery Community Organizations and Peer Recovery Support Services is an important call to action on the future of addiction recovery in the United States”, says William L. White, Recovery Historian, and author of Slaying the Dragon: The History of Addiction Treatment and Recovery in America. “If its recommendations are heeded, this seminal report could well be a milestone in the future of recovery community organizations and peer recovery support services.”

The white paper, soon to be released publicly by Faces & Voices of Recovery, demonstrates how the current financing models for peer recovery support services present significant barriers to maximizing the role of the peer workforce in addressing the addiction crisis in the United States. The peer-to-peer relationship impacts health at multiple levels of the socioecological model (i.e., at individual, family, community, and societal levels) and has potential not currently actualized. The inclusion of peer workers has become a best practice and a number of interventions utilizing them demonstrate compelling outcomes. In this report, the authors lay out the key issues underlying the need for action to bring about broad systems change.

“While we recognize the complexity of policy and financing issues, the peer workforce and recovery community organizations that employ them need a paradigm shift now to sustain their invaluable work in communities across America. This report is a must-read for everyone interested in the future of recovery community organizations and peer recovery support services”, says Patty McCarthy, CEO of Faces & Voices of Recovery.

Authors of the white paper are Kenneth D. Smith, PhD, Assistant Professor of Public Health at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, Robin Peyson, MHSA, Owner & Lead Consultant of RLP Consulting, and Sierra Castedo de Martell, MPH, Doctoral Candidate, UTHealth School of Public Health, Austin Regional Campus.

Join Faces & Voices of Recovery at 3-4:30 pm ET on December 1, 2022, for a webinar with the authors, as well as other nationally recognized leaders in the recovery movement. To learn more or register https://facesandvoicesofrecovery.org/event/a-seat-at-the-table-leadership-to-unlock-the-potential-of-recovery-community/

Unlocking the Potential of Recovery Community Organizations and Peer Recovery Support Services will be made available on the Faces & Voices of Recovery website at https://facesandvoicesofrecovery.org/ prior to the event.

In a panel discussion on September 18, leaders from the American Psychiatric Association, Mental Health America, One Mind, Peg’s Foundation, public broadcasting station WETA, and the Treatment Advocacy Center will share seven key pillars in their vision for transforming mental healthcare. Each of these major organizations will share the practical steps they are taking to achieve this shared vision.

The panel discussion will be led by Saundra Jain, MA, PsyD, LPC, an adjunct clinical affiliate at the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing, and private practitioner in Austin, Texas. Panel participants are part of the CEO Alliance for Mental Health, and include:

  • Saul Levin, MD, CEO & Medical Director, American Psychiatric Association

“We can effect change when we work together, and it is exciting to see six of the nation’s leading organizations in mental healthcare coming together to build and implement a shared vision,” Jain said. “We are all working to improve patient outcomes. This is a powerful moment, and an opportunity to transform our strategies for patient care.”

Educational Agenda and Partnerships

In addition to the panel discussion, the Psych Congress agenda features more than 50 CME sessions over the course of four days, led by internationally renowned faculty presenters. Featured sessions include presentations from Ronald Braunstein and Caroline Whiddon, co-founders of Me2/; and Tom Insel, psychiatrist, neurologist, co-founder, and president of Mindstrong Health.

Attendees will have the freedom to choose their schedule and attend sessions that will have the greatest impact for their patients and practice, said Doug Edwards, Senior Vice President at HMP Global and Director of the Psychiatry & Behavioral Health Learning Network

“Our featured sessions are a series of noteworthy lectures designed to educate and inspire,” Edwards said. “In addition to the special panel presentation featuring top executives in the field of mental health, all of our educational sessions are led by some of the nation’s most prolific mental health clinicians and educators. No other conference offers the same breadth and level of comprehensive psychopharmacology education combined with state-of-the-art treatment approaches and emerging research findings.”

Each year, Psych Congress partners with a national or local charity that is shaping positive and meaningful change in the field of mental healthcare. This year, the event supports the New Orleans Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI New Orleans), a local organization that offers hope, help, and healing to people with mental illness and those who share their lives. Rescue Agency and Three Seas embark on a mission to reach those struggling with an opioid use disorder to help break the vicious cycle

A New Game Plan — Opioid Use Disorder

Too many people struggling with an opioid use disorder find themselves alone in a losing game. Certain stories are best portrayed beyond the confines of our physical world.

The visual experts at Three Seas, together with Rescue: The Behavior Change Agency, personify the struggle against opioid use disorder in “A New Game Plan.” This public service announcement is part of Rethink Recovery—a public education campaign in partnership between the Illinois Department of Human Services and Prevention First and Rescue Agency.

“Too many people struggling with an opioid use disorder find themselves alone in a losing game,” laments the narrator in this 30-second PSA. “A New Game Plan” depicts this struggle as a lopsided, 4-on-1 basketball game with monsters representing the symptoms of the disorder that make the disease difficult to overcome. It features an actor who portrays a person with an opioid use disorder playing a skewed game of hoops against a team of 2-dimensional animated monsters.

In-house Director/Senior Editor Owen Lang and Senior Designer/Motion Graphics Artist Carmen Cothern collaborated with Rescue Agency to create this stark mash-up of real and imaginary worlds that reflects the reality that overcoming opioid use disorder is not a fair fight. View the case study here.

“Certain stories are best portrayed beyond the confines of our physical world. This spring, we embarked on telling such a story when San Diego-based Rescue Agency approached us with a mission to reach those struggling with an opioid use disorder to help them break the vicious cycle,” says Owen Lang.

“The result highlights what we do best – collaborative, creative thinking resulting in successful narrative outcomes, and what we appreciate most – the chance to make a difference. We are extremely pleased with how the spot turned out. We invite you to check it out here,” says Lee Konen, CEO of Three Seas.
