New coalition calls on UN to recognise natural materials ahead of INC-3

A global coalition of packaging companies is calling on UN Treaty makers to recognise natural polymer materials as a key tool in the fight against plastic. Officially launched today, the Natural Polymers Group is a new industry voice committed to scaling natural polymer solutions to reduce plastic pollution globally. These innovative materials, created by companies Notpla, Loliware, Traceless, Xampla, MarinaText, Zerocircle and PlantSea, offer a regenerative, circular solution to tackle plastic waste and pollution.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 14, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — A global coalition of packaging companies is calling on UN Treaty makers to recognise natural polymer materials as a key tool in the fight against plastic.

Officially launched today, the Natural Polymers Group is a new industry voice committed to scaling natural polymer solutions to reduce plastic pollution globally.

The group, representing seven innovators (across the US, Europe and India), has been founded to establish nature-based materials, such as plants and seaweeds, as a viable and mainstream means of replacing plastic.

These innovative materials, created by companies Notpla, Loliware, Traceless, Xampla, MarinaText, Zerocircle and PlantSea, offer a regenerative, circular solution to tackle plastic waste and pollution.

The third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee will kick off in Nairobi next week, as representatives come together to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.

“We have come together to demonstrate the enormous potential for naturally sourced materials to transform industries reliant on conventional and single-use plastics,” said Pierre Paslier, cofounder of Notpla. “Our group will be the voice of this emerging industry and accelerate the adoption of natural polymers across many sectors and applications.”

Alexandra French, CEO of Xampla said: “We are proud to launch the Natural Polymers Group to speak with one voice about the potential of natural materials to eliminate plastic. Our Morro materials are a viable and market ready solution that can do things plastics never could. We urge those who are drafting the Treaty to recognise natural polymers as an essential part of a plastic free future.”

The group has set out three policy endorsements ahead of INC-3. This includes the call for a global and clear definition for plastic and non-plastic substitutes and an expanded criteria for circularity, that recognises natural polymer’s end of life benefits.

It also pushes for ambitious policies and incentives to phase out unnecessary plastics such as extended producer responsibility systems, taxes and levies.

These measures will help scale the production and use of safe, sustainable natural polymer solutions made from abundant renewable resources.

“The global treaty underway now is a pivotal chance to coordinate ambitious action to address the plastic crisis. We urge policymakers to leverage this opportunity to support natural solutions as the key solution to avoid plastic waste and pollution altogether, rather than relying solely on recycling or reuse of plastic,” added Pierre Paslier.

The Natural Polymers Group represents an important step in harnessing nature’s solutions to transition to a circular economy free of plastic pollution.

“It’s now more critical than ever that the natural polymers industry unites to solve the most pressing challenges of our time: plastic pollution and climate change. LOLIWARE’s fully commercialised seaweed resins platform ensures sustainability at scale, compliance with new legislation, new customer demands, and new waste requirements,” said Sea Briganti, CEO of LOLIWARE.

The coalition invites other innovators, businesses, researchers and NGOs to join its mission.

Newark, N.J.’s Affordable Connectivity Program Connects 31,000+ Households to High-Speed Internet, Saving Residents $1 Million Monthly

“The city of Newark is pursuing a series of initiatives to support broadband access and adoption – enabling residents to work from home, complete schoolwork and online courses, attend telehealth appointments and more,” said Marcus Randolph, president and CEO, Invest Newark. “Promoting the adoption of ACP is the first part of that work.”

About half of Newark’s 110,000 households are eligible for the ACP program. With outreach underway, nearly 30 percent of the city is enrolled, with 10,000 households added in 2023 alone.

“Invest Newark and the Newark Alliance are laser focused on closing the digital divide in Newark and ensuring that all residents have access to affordable high-speed Internet,” said Aaron Meyerson, Newark’s chief innovation economy officer and director of broadband. “Though the ACP program is the most immediate plan to connect residents, we will be rolling out additional programs soon, including connecting public housing buildings and rolling out free Wi-Fi downtown.”

“There is a huge information gap in Newark; many people here don’t have high-speed Internet access at home because of the cost,” said Andrea McLean, ACP outreach ambassador for Invest Newark. “When I tell people living in homeless shelters and those receiving NJ SNAP benefits that they qualify for free Internet service, they are really excited as it’s a huge opportunity to get connected.”

Earlier this year, Invest Newark received a grant of $400,000 from the Federal Communications Commission to promote participation in the ACP. One of just four recipients in the state, Invest Newark’s initial goal was to increase adoption from 36 percent of eligible households to over 50 percent. Households are eligible for the program based on their household income or if they qualify for federal programs such as Medicaid or food stamps.

“Our new goal is to have 70 percent of the eligible households sign up for the program by June 2024, and we are likely to surpass that,” continued McLean.

“A quality Internet connection is not a luxury; it’s a necessity that unlocks opportunities in jobs, schooling, healthcare, and more,” said U.S. Senator Cory Booker. “This milestone is testament to the hard work of Mayor Baraka’s administration, Invest Newark, Newark Alliance, and many others to increase access and expand opportunity in Newark. I’m committed to continue working with them as I fight in Congress to extend funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program, a vital investment in working families in Newark and across America.”

“For a long time, closing the digital divide focused on one part of the equation – the lack of physical infrastructure to get online. But we know that for many people, even when there was technically access, the cost to get online was too high. Thanks to investments from Congress, we have new tools to tackle both challenges, including the Affordable Connectivity Program that is helping struggling families to get or stay online to pay for this modern-day necessity,” said Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.

“A big part of our success in so many aspects of life in Newark is our commitment to connecting with each other – and the Internet is such an important way to do that,” said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “We’re grateful for the Affordable Connectivity Program that supports our citywide, multi-phase approach to promoting residents’ fast, affordable access to this critical resource for work, school, community engagement, telehealth and so many other activities that unite us as Newarkers.”

“The Newark Alliance has been working to advance equitable economic growth in Newark for 25 years,” said Evan Weiss, CEO of the Newark Alliance. “However, the pandemic laid bare what many of us already knew: access to high quality broadband is inseparable from meeting our broader mission. Our work advancing the ACP is a key part of that initiative and we look forward to doubling down on this effort in 2024.”

To learn more and sign up for the Affordable Connectivity Program, click here, visit any Newark Public Library on Mondays from 10am to 1pm or go to City Hall (Room 209 or 315) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (1-3 p.m.) or Friday (9-12 p.m.) To check if you qualify or identify which Internet providers offer the benefit near you, visit getinternet.gov.

CardioVascular Coalition Calls for Immediate Congressional Action to Prevent Further Clinical Labor Cuts

The CardioVascular Coalition (CVC) strongly supports the Providing Relief and Stability for Medicare Patients Act of 2023 (H.R. 3674), introduced by Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12), Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-CA-29), Rep. Greg Murphy, MD (R-NC-3), and Rep. Danny Davis (IL-D-7). This bipartisan legislation will prevent ongoing cuts to office-based specialists for the next two years. By doing so, it helps stop major disruptions for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and coronary artery disease (CAD).

Amidst a barrage of reductions in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) over recent years, with decreases surpassing 20% stemming from the 2022 Physician Fee Schedule and clinical labor policy, these ongoing cuts will exacerbate the financial strain on healthcare providers during a period of unparalleled economic instability.

If the cuts are left unaddressed, the end result will be providers closing their doors, therefore depriving peripheral artery disease patients of care in the outpatient settings they prefer. The CVC believes that the cuts will worsen health equity problems and accelerate the consolidation trend across the United States.

“The CVC is gravely concerned how these ongoing cuts would increase instability and further limit patient access to revascularization services that are critical for patients and reduce costs,” said vascular & interventional radiology specialist Jerry Niedzwiecki, MD. “We are asking for Congress to step in and stop these cuts from harming patients and forcing providers to close their doors. H.R. 3674 is a bipartisan solution that can pass before the end of the year, but Congress must make this a priority.”

Dr. Niedzwiecki continued, “To address the issues of patient access and systemic health inequity in our country, Congress must pass the Providing Relief and Stability for Medicare Patients Act of 2023 (H.R. 3674). Further, CMS must work closely with Congress to fundamentally reform the Physician Fee Schedule so that any future unjustified cuts to specialty provider services can be avoided.”

Inflatable Film receives first ever Fiscal Sponsorship for “Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool” from the Hawai’i International Film Festival (HIFF) to support local filmmakers

Inflatable Film, Maui-based impact film production company, signed the first Fiscal Sponsorship agreement offered by the Hawai’i International Film Festival, a Hawai’i based 501c3 non-profit organization. Fiscal sponsorships are a critical catalyst for filmmakers to secure funding to produce documentaries, like Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool, which was one of the Opening Night films at HIFF43 Fall festival.

MAUI, Hawaii, Nov. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Inflatable Film, Maui-based impact film production company, signed the first Fiscal Sponsorship agreement offered by the Hawai’i International Film Festival, a Hawai’i based 501c3 non-profit organization. Fiscal sponsorships are a critical catalyst for filmmakers to secure funding to produce documentaries, like Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool, which was one of the Opening Night films at HIFF43 Fall festival.

Fiscal sponsorships are an invaluable tool for filmmakers to be able to produce local stories and share impactful content with broad distribution. “Uncle Bully Surf Skool”, from Inflatable Film, about local surf instructor Bull Kotter and his mentorship of the underserved youth during the pandemic, is one of the last stories filmed in Lahaina before the August 8, 2023 fires. Leah Warshawski, Producer/Director and Todd Soliday, Director/Editor considered the film finished and ready to submit for festivals in early June. After the fires destroyed Bully’s home and business, left several of the film’s crew homeless, and threatened many of the encampments where the children in the film lived, Leah and Todd picked up their cameras once again.

“It is an honor to be HIFF’s first fiscal sponsorship partner, which enables donors and sponsors to make tax deductible contributions. It’s often the only way we can tell unique and life-changing stories about people making a difference in their communities. After the fires on Maui, HIFF was the first, and only, film festival to ask how they could help. Now we’ll be able to contribute to the local film economy for a long time to come.” Leah Warshawski, Inflatable Film Co-Owner, and Producer.

The demand for short films and documentaries is on the rise, increasing by 142% in 3 years, according to Axios and Parrot Analytics. HIFF sees the significant opportunities for the industry and is launching its fiscal sponsorship initiative in conjunction with the HIFF43 Fall festival to support the local filmmaking community across Hawai’i to help them build their businesses and craft at home, by helping them securing funding through donations versus having to take work off-island.

“HIFF’s Fiscal Sponsorship initiative is an important step for our organization to support our filmmaking community in Hawai’i, and a cornerstone of our purpose as a creative pipeline in the Pacific and further promoting the development of careers in the arts,” said Beckie Stocchetti, executive director of Hawai’i International Film Festival. “Inflatable Film and Uncle Bully’s Surf Skool were selected because of their reputation as award-winning filmmakers who are committed to showcasing the stories of the community in Maui and across the islands.

“Inflatable Film is currently seeking donors to help them cover the costs of filming new footage, paying their local Maui crew, and post-production / finishing costs. The newly completed film now includes never-before seen footage of the devastation of Lahaina after the fires and the ongoing recovery through surfing for local children and families in the weeks that have followed. Their initial goal is to raise $100,000.00 for these expenses and help them begin a nationwide impact screening tour to shed light on the continued plight of the Lahaina community and showcase the impact of mentors inspiring children to see their potential.

About Inflatable Film

Inflatable Film is an award-winning impact film and video production company with over 50 years of combined experience in the film and video industry, based in Maui and Sun Valley, Idaho. They specialize in unique and intimate storytelling around the globe, having filmed in 30+ countries for broadcasters, non-profits, corporations, and brand content. Their films have won numerous awards, screened at more than 75 festivals, including “Finding Hillywood” and “Big Sonia” which played at the White House and is currently streaming on a variety of networks including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and PBS.

BIVF Foundation Empowers Parenthood Aspirations with 2023 Family Building and Fertility Grants

Individuals and couples are encouraged to visit www.bivffoundation.org to learn more about the organization’s mission and the criteria for grant eligibility.

Applications for the initial round of grants are due by December 31, 2023

Driven by a highly qualified board of medical directors and fueled by generous contributions from individuals who share their vision, the BIVF Foundation has established three distinct grant programs to provide essential support to a wide spectrum of individuals and couples:

IVF Cycle Grants: These grants offer a lifeline to individuals without fertility insurance coverage, covering the entire cost of an IVF cycle at any SART-accredited center in MA, ME, NH, and RI.

Oncofertility Grants: Designed for individuals recently diagnosed with cancer, these grants cover the expenses related to an egg freezing cycle, enabling them to preserve their fertility before beginning cancer treatment.

Financial Assistance Grants: Providing cash support of up to $10,000, these grants can be used to cover out-of-pocket expenses associated with donor eggs or sperm, adoption, medications, and more, making family building more attainable for those in need.

David Stern, Chairman of the BIVF Foundation, stated, “For many individuals in New England, building a family through assisted reproductive technology, such as IVF, egg donation, and adoption, presents a significant financial challenge. The BIVF Foundation’s mission is to alleviate the financial burden associated with reproductive care for those who require it.”

Beyond its grants, the BIVF Foundation is unwavering in its commitment to fostering a compassionate community, supporting those facing challenges, and raising awareness about fertility issues. Rooted in New England, the BIVF Foundation is deeply dedicated to extending a helping hand to those confronting the emotional and financial obstacles of fertility treatment and family-building. It firmly believes that every individual and couple should have the opportunity to experience the joys of parenthood, irrespective of their financial circumstances.

The BIVF Foundation understands the myriad of situations in which individuals and couples may require assisted reproductive technology to fulfill their family-building dreams. Unfortunately, this crucial need often goes unmet due to insufficient insurance coverage, leaving families saddled with overwhelming financial burdens. The BIVF Foundation was established to bridge this gap, providing support to those traditionally excluded from family-building discussions due to a lack of insurance resources.

The foundation’s commitment is unwavering, recognizing the importance of assisting individuals and couples, including same-sex couples, single parents by choice, those diagnosed with infertility without fertility insurance benefits, and people with cancer who urgently need to preserve their future fertility.

In 2023 and beyond, the BIVF Foundation is poised to make an enduring impact on the lives of many, offering a message of hope and unity to those who have faced the heart-wrenching challenges of infertility. Through their Family Building Grants, they reaffirm the belief that parenthood is an achievable dream.

The Unwoke Market Can Now Quench Their Thirst While Also Enjoying Satire Courtesy of New Woke Tears™ Water

Woke Tears Water thinks everyone has the right to believe what they want, and they have the right to say why it is dumb. As a spin on the now commonly known company DEI statements – that recently became almost mandatory – Woke Tears Water has a “DIE” statement for its brand, which in brief states:

  • Diversity: We are committed to ridiculing a diverse range of opinions held by diverse groups of people. Diversity is our strength and their weakness.
  • Inclusivity: We are committed to providing our customers with the most inclusive beverage on the planet: people of all colors drink it, animals drink it, even plants drink it.
  • Equity: We are committed to promoting its true meaning – the money value of a property or of an interest in a property in excess of claims or liens against it.

“We aren’t the first anti-woke bottled water brand, we’re just the funnier one – it’s a Coke and Pepsi situation with room for all in the marketplace,” said Kyle Taran, CEO & Founder. “We live in a world where a new vindictive ideology, obsessed with victimhood and poisoned with narcissism and envy, has infected the minds of a whole generation and captured the boardrooms of national corporations, school districts, college campuses, and government offices. Even such mundane things as supporting one’s favorite sports team or buying running shoes, beer, or chocolate often can’t be done without inadvertently providing support to a cause that seeks to impose the only permissible, politically correct, viewpoint or vision of reality. This ideology seems to ban parody itself and rob people of their sense of humor. We’re changing that – let’s drink up, have fun, and make hydration great again!”

Woke Tears Water can be purchased only at https://woketearswater.com/collections/water. A single 16.9 oz bottle is $9.95, 24-count 12 oz is $36.99, 24-count 16.9 oz is $39.99 (available with blue or green label) and for these four options, shipping is included. The 36 cases of 24-count 16.9 oz is $699.00, and the macroaggression order of 72 cases of 24-count 16.9 oz is $999.00, note shipping is customized and billed separately for these two bulk orders.
