Rocky Mountain Institute Report Shows Massive Investment in Battery Technology is Accelerating the Energy Transition, Driving Exponential Market Growth

We can now say with confidence that the age of affordable battery technology is coming, and it’s happening faster than anyone expected.

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) today announced the release of its Breakthrough Battery Technologies report, which shows that exploding investment in battery technologies is revolutionizing the sector much faster than expected and setting in motion a seismic shift in how we will power our lives and organize energy systems as early as 2030.

With funding pouring into battery technology companies—over $1.4 billion in the first half of 2019 alone—RMI found that the reality of a future energy system rich in renewables and electric vehicles (EVs) is closer than ever. The report also highlights the growing threat of stranded assets in natural gas and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle markets, and an opportunity for the United States to become a global leader in the battery industry by constructively aligning efforts from the public and private sectors to support technology growth.

Throughout the report, RMI investigates new markets and applications and the potential for commercialization of battery chemistries beyond Lithium-ion. This diversification of battery technology has been made possible by robust private investment; governmental support of research and development; national-, city- and state-level electric mobility and renewable energy targets and growing adoption of EVs.

“We can now say with confidence that the age of affordable battery technology is coming, and it’s happening faster than anyone expected,” said Madeline Tyson, senior associate at RMI and lead author of the report. “We’re incredibly excited about what this accelerating pace of change means as we fight the climate crisis. Advanced battery technologies have the power to outcompete many fossil-fueled energy systems in the near term and can help us meet ambitious carbon reduction goals on or ahead of schedule.”

Key takeaways include:

● Battery cost and performance improvements are quickly outpacing forecasts: Increasing demand for EVs, grid-tied storage, and other emerging applications are further fueling the cycle of investment and cost declines in batteries and setting the stage for mass adoption. Total manufacturing investment, both previous and planned until 2023, represents around $150 billion dollars, and analysts expect the capital cost for new planned battery-manufacturing capacity to drop by more than half from 2018 to 2023.

● These improvements spell trouble for natural gas and internal combustion engine vehicle markets: As batteries become cheaper and make renewables-plus-storage more competitive, legacy energy infrastructure will struggle to keep up. RMI finds that new—and soon, existing—natural gas plants are likely to be out-competed by clean energy portfolios as early as 2021, leading to a much greater risk of stranded assets. This mirrors a similar risk for traditional ICE vehicles.

● Lithium-ion, while still the leading battery technology, is likely not the universal solution of future energy storage technologies: Other technologies that are better suited for applications like long-duration energy storage, heavy trucking, aviation and EV fast-charging infrastructure will increasingly drive these emerging battery markets. Savvy companies, governments and investors should explore and support these alternative battery technologies—not just Lithium-ion—to accelerate and scale climate-critical solutions.

RMI’s Breakthrough Battery Technologies report makes evident that the United States, in particular, has an opportunity to either become a leader in battery technologies beyond Lithium-ion, or risk ceding ground to China and other major players globally. In order to avoid replaying the evolution of the solar photovoltaic market—in which China made significant investment early in the game in order to become a dominant world superpower—the United States must prioritize investment and policies conducive to success now, or risk being pushed out of the market.

“It’s crucial that the investor, policymaker and regulatory ecosystem stay ahead of the curve on battery cost and technology developments in order to fully capture the enormous environmental and economic opportunities to be had,” said Charlie Bloch, principal at RMI and coauthor of the report. “Climate progress can be supercharged if these groups stay aligned with each decision they make.”

The RMI report outlines several key opportunities for a wide range of industry stakeholders to support a holistic approach to the battery-driven energy transformation. For example, national governments should find ways to incentivize component manufacturing, continued research and development, and battery deployment; manufacturers should work to improve the technology in ways that can reduce cost and reveal new use cases; and investors should consider diversifying their portfolios across promising near-term technologies as well as precommercial battery technologies, even if risks and investment timelines don’t perfectly align with typical venture capital criteria.

By working in alignment to support breakthrough battery technology success, energy industry stakeholders have an opportunity to hasten, not hamper, the rapid and economic transition to resilient, clean and affordable energy systems.

How Fast Guard Service Is Saving Companies Millions Of Dollars

Fast Guard Service

Fast Guard Service

Fast Guard Service is a fully regulated, insured, and licensed company who deal with all aspects of commercial security.

Businesses have an obligation to ensure customer safety is adequately serviced whilst on their premises. Should a crime occur and the company is proven to have been negligent in their responsibility, legal payouts often stretch into millions of dollars. Many companies fall foul of such litigation because of the use of outdated security processes that haven’t been updated to take into account increased levels of crime in their area.

Fast Guard Service is helping enterprises re-assess their obligations and put in place robust security measures, such as security guards and CCTV camera installation, to provide a safe client environment. This dramatically reduces the odds of judicial proceedings and also has other positive repercussions, including increased marketability and lower insurance rates.

Liability For Damages

Judges often rule in favor of victims seeking reparations against companies failing to provide elevated security measures when there has been a known increase in crime in the area and for not having 24/7 on-site security. Apartment complexes, shopping malls, clubs, sports stadiums, parking garages, and many other companies can all be held liable if an incident occurs on their premises and no proper security measures were in place to protect visitors from harm. This is why every company located in moderate-high crime areas should take the proper measures to secure their property and prevent incidents that could result in the payout of millions of dollars, should they occur.

Security Services Save Money And Lives

Many business owners are blissfully unaware of their accountability should a crime occur on their premises. Far too often there’s no security present, or in the case of security cameras, they either don’t work or aren’t adequately monitored. Very importantly, if crime statistics are on the rise, or if the police have increased their presence as a crime deterrent yet a company has failed to raise their security to match, this can lead to increased fiduciary responsibility.

Therefore it’s essential that business owners and managers engage a professional service to carry out an effective security assessment and put in place the security necessary. Savvy companies take advantage of a business security service that will assist with putting proactive measures in place, therefore effectively decreasing the likelihood of such incidents occurring. Deterrents such as on-site security guards, 24/7 monitored CCTV, security gates and the like provide a safe environment for clients and actively deter criminals.

Fast Guard Service is a global leader in such security. Entrusted by some of the biggest business names in the US and worldwide, their experienced team works with companies to assess their situation and put in place the most effective security solutions.

Security in the 21st century isn’t solely about preventing crime, it’s also about ensuring clients trust their safety is well looked after and the positive repercussions this brings, such as lower insurance premiums and increased marketability. In addition, should the worst happen, lawsuit verdicts are far more likely to be found in a company’s favor if it can be shown that staunch security measures are in place. Fast Guard Service is a fully regulated, insured, and licensed company who deal with all aspects of commercial security. More information can be found at https://fastguardservice.com

Yamaha Sonogenic SHS-300 Keytar Lets Everyone Jam Regardless of Musical Knowledge

Yamaha SHS-300 Sonogenic

Yamaha SHS-300 Sonogenic

“Everyone who loves to listen to music imagines being in the band. With the Sonogenic SHS-300, they truly can,” says Ben Harrison, marketing manager, Digital Piano and Portable Keyboard, Yamaha Corporation of America.

Yamaha today introduced the Sonogenic SHS-300, a wearable “keytar” that empowers anyone to sound great playing along with their favorite songs, even if they’ve never picked up a musical instrument.

The instrument is the little brother to the SHS-500, first introduced at the NAMM music products convention in January 2019, where it earned a “Best in Show” award. Sonogenic ushered in an entirely new category of musical instrument, which brought a new level of spontaneity to the process of creating music for everyone who loves to listen to it, smashing the barrier to entry and turning passive enjoyment into active creativity.

Like the SHS-500, the SHS-300 can be played in the usual way as well, but its groundbreaking Jam function enables free-flowing performance without fear of ever hitting a wrong note. Musicians and non-musicians alike can enjoy a new level of interaction with the music they love — a level not achieved by any “rock hero” video game.

The Jam function works together with a free iOS or Android app called Chord Tracker, which analyzes the songs already stored in the music library of the connected mobile device and creates chord charts for them. Then, via a USB or wireless Bluetooth connection, it remaps the keys on the Sonogenic’s keyboard as a song plays, so that whatever keys are pressed are always in harmony with the chord of the moment. Even laying a forearm across the 37-note keyboard cannot cause a dissonant sound.

Further enhancing the Jam function are three musical modes in which it can operate. A mode called 1Finger is best for backing or “comping” parts with just one finger as it adds harmonies to whatever note is struck, Backing mode lets the player do the same with more fingers, and Melody mode is ideal for letting loose ripping solos.

The SHS-300 has 12 instrument Voices including synth leads, bass, and brass, piano, electric piano, organ, electric and acoustic guitars, strings, and even a dance kit that assigns different drum sounds across the keyboard. Because the Sonogenic doesn’t shift the timing of when notes are played, it offers a major benefit to those who sincerely want to learn to play keyboards but feel intimidated: They can begin by working on rhythm without having to think about pitch. As this increases their confidence, they can eventually turn Jam mode off if desired.

Audio output of the SHS-300 can be enjoyed through the built-in speaker or 1/8-inch stereo headphone jack. A pitch-bend wheel on the neck of the instrument allows for realistic synth-like expression while buttons next to it add vibrato and sustain, select Voices, and engage and disengage the Jam mode. Settings such as key transposition, tuning, touch response, and more are adjusted by pressing the Function button and then a keyboard key; functions are clearly labeled on the casing beneath the keyboard.

The SHS-300’s USB port may also be used to connect to a computer for MIDI communication with virtual instruments and recording software. And because the SHS-300 can be powered by four AA batteries or over USB, there’s neither place nor time where a spontaneous Jam session can’t happen.

“Everyone who loves to listen to music imagines being in the band,” says Ben Harrison, marketing manager, Digital Piano and Portable Keyboard, Yamaha Corporation of America. “With the Sonogenic SHS-300 — which brings most of the features of the SHS-500 in at a lower price — they truly can.”

Pricing and Availability

The Yamaha Sonogenic SHS-300 (MSRP $299.00) will be available exclusively at Amazon through the end of 2019. For more information, visit the Yamaha Booth at the 2020 NAMM Show in the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, Marquis Ballroom, January 16-19, 2020, or https://yamaha.io/2JBrUQD

Omron releases E3AS Series TOF Photoelectric Sensors with compact size and 1,500 mm sensing distance

https://www.prweb.com/

E3AS photoelectric sensors employ time-of-flight (TOF) detection and an antifouling coating to provide exceptional performance in the toughest environments.

Omron Automation Americas, a global leader in end-to-end industrial automation solutions, launched its new E3AS Series Reflective-Type Photoelectric Sensors that combine accurate detection for diverse targets, exceptional sensing distance, environmental robustness, and compact size. These sensors are designed to help manufacturers manage varied and flexible production needs more effectively.

Manufacturers are producing a broader range of products with shorter life cycles, making part detection a dynamic challenge. By maintaining stable detection without being influenced by varying sensing distances, colors, materials, or surfaces, the E3AS sensors make selection, adjustment, and maintenance tasks easier than ever, improving commissioning and operation rates.

The E3AS family’s sensing distance of 1,500mm is five times longer than that of previous models, and the full sensing range of 50mm to 1,500mm eliminates the need for manufacturers to select different sensors for each application. The time-of-flight (TOF) detection method ensures high detection stability regardless of the characteristics of target objects, making sensor selection and adjustment easier than ever.

In addition, the use an antifouling coating on the sensing surface reduces false detection and minimizes maintenance needs in environments with oil, dust, or steam. Dirty sensing surfaces can result in false detections when conventional photoelectric sensors are used, causing unexpected recovery work after line stoppages and periodic cleanings to prevent future stoppages.
