As Second Major League Rugby Team Folds, Players Want Answers

The news is truly unfortunate, but we cannot overlook how the league allowed this to unfold so soon to the start of the new season. Many of the Toronto and New York players will be left without options as other MLR teams have already filled their rosters and reached their cap space under league rules. Additionally, many players have incurred out-of-pocket expenses for moving and housing, and some are still owed funds from last season.

The latest setbacks underscore the need for players to be involved as true stakeholders if the league is to succeed. “It’s time for the league to prioritize treating its players better and have more open and honest conversations. “We are more than pawns in a chess game and are tired of waking up to the news that we have just been removed from the board. We are human and have families that count on us and bills to pay.” Chris Mattina, who had recently signed with New York, is now going through this tragedy for a second time, having played for Austin in 2022. “This is a recurring nightmare; I went through this two years ago and watched guys’ lives get ruined and promising players forced into early retirement.” He continued. “It took months of fighting and lawsuits for some to get money owed to them. Let’s hope the league does better this time.”

The players of Major League Rugby are willing to work with the league through turbulent times but deserve an honest partnership, adequate notice, and real dialogue instead of waking up to the news that puts their family’s futures at risk. The Players continue to seek voluntary recognition of the USRPA before the upcoming NLRB election so they can commence essential discussions with the league about the path forward.

“This has never been about players wanting more money. Our campaign is solely focused on driving the league to sit down and have honest conversations with the players about how we can move the game forward in a way that prioritizes player welfare, contract security, and safety,” said Nick Civetta, player chair, US Rugby Players Association.

Civetta continued, “We want to work with the league to ensure a better future of the sport, transparency with the players and fans, and equitable treatment of all involved.”

About the United States Rugby Players Association (USRPA)

USRPA is an independent players union established by and operated for the benefit of professional rugby players in America. It is the recognized collective bargaining representative for the Players on the United States National Teams (both Men’s and Women’s 7s and 15s). USRPA has been organizing Major League Rugby in an effort for these players to gain a meaningful role in shaping the future of their sport and how it is played professionally.

New NPG Forum Paper Examines Uphill Battle to Counter Population Growth in the U.S.

Slowing Down Population Growth in the U.S. is Not Impossible

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — A new Forum paper from Negative Population Growth has revealed that ‘smart growth’ won’t be enough to solve the population crisis in the United States. The paper, titled Spoiler Alert: ‘Smart Growth’ Won’t Save the Day, by Mark Cromer, examines the challenges posed by the country’s rapidly increasing population and the need for meaningful dialogue to produce policy initiatives that can reverse the trend. Cromer begins his work by noting: “With more than 8 billion people now crowding a planet that continues to convulse with the conflict and corruption that drives mass migrations, the United States confronts its own steadily escalating population growth and the challenges it presents in both the short-term and over the long haul.”

This Forum paper highlights the visible symptoms of population growth, such as the abject chaos of mass migration, the fierce competition for employment and housing, and the escalating homeless crisis. It also examines the role of U.S. society in the population crisis, sharing that “throughout the past half-century, much of U.S. society has lived something of a double life; on the one hand, advocating for ever more environmental protections and often leading preservation efforts (here and abroad), but on the other hand, indulging a seemingly insatiable appetite for more and bigger things. From TVs-turned-Home Theaters to cars-turned-tanks and homes turned McMansions, a powerful and perpetual desire for ‘more’ and the instinctive sense that the party is about to end, one way or the other, has been evident for the better part of the past half-century.”

Additionally, Cromer does not shy away from accurately identifying immigration as the main driver of U.S. population growth, explaining: “In 1965, the foreign-born population of the U.S. was just five percent. Pew’s 2015 report noted that more than half of the 131 million people added to the U.S. population between 1965 and 2015 were the result of immigration and births to immigrants.” He also spotlights the ineffectiveness of politicians unwilling to go the distance, writing: “To have a meaningful dialogue that produces policy initiatives designed to reverse population growth simply appears beyond the reach of our present political leadership in the United States.”

Taking on the media, Cromer dissects comments on population growth made by various figures and points out inaccuracies along the way. Zeroing in on a piece written for Nat Geo, he writes: “…where one of his (journalist Robert Kunzig) demographic takeaways was that if we wanted to give the entire population of the planet a little more breathing room than the City of Angels, everyone would still fit rather comfortably into Texas.” Cromer then adds: “Such musings are a sly deception based on a journalistic sleight of hand that conflates empirical geographic space and the human physical footprint with ‘best case’ hypothetical projections surrounding resource availability and consumption rates among a bevy of other basic quality of life metrics.”

This paper is a call to action for U.S. citizens to take a stand and demand meaningful dialogue and policy initiatives that can reverse the population crisis. It is a reminder that smart growth alone won’t solve the problem. In his conclusion, Cromer tells readers: “More than energy, arable land and viable living space, reliable access to fresh water for nearly a half billion people here is going to be chief among the resources that should guide population sustainability decisions in the years ahead.”

Founded in 1972, NPG is a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to educating the American public and political leaders regarding the damaging effects of population growth. We believe that our nation is already vastly overpopulated in terms of the long-range carrying capacity of its resources and environment. NPG advocates the adoption of its Proposed National Population Policy, with the goal of eventually stabilizing U.S. population at a sustainable level – far lower than today’s. We do not simply identify the problems – we propose solutions. For more information, visit our website at NPG.org, follow us on Facebook @NegativePopulationGrowth or follow us on Twitter @npg_org.

Alley Cat Rescue Takes Stance Against US National Park Service Plan to Remove Cats from San Juan Historical Site, Call for Public to Become Involved via Petition

Alley Cat Rescue supports trap-neuter-return (TNR) of the cats, which would include sterilizing all the cats and vaccinating them against rabies, and removal of kittens young enough to be socialized from the park and into adoption programs. The NPS has said that the population of cats has actually increased over the years, despite local nonprofits and volunteers doing TNR. However, sources doing the TNR have explained to ACR that the cause for the increase is rampant pet abandonment that the NPS and local government have not taken steps to correct.

President and founder of ACR, Louise Holton, has been practicing and researching community cat management for 30 years. She explains that the NPS’ plan to rid the area of cats would be only a temporary solution: “Catch-and-kill simply does not work. New cats will arrive (or be dumped) and the cycle of breeding will continue—it’s been proven that TNR is the only way to control outdoor community cats.” As Holton further explains, cats who have been sterilized and then returned to their outdoor homes guard the territory, thereby keeping new, unsterilized cats from moving in and multiplying. Of course, as Holton pointed out, it defeats population control efforts when cats are continuously abandoned in an area.

ACR is asking the public to help persuade the NPS to cancel their removal plan and instead apply their resources to aiding in TNR and preventing callous cat abandonment at the historic site by signing their petition, available at https://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/361/081/110/.

Alley Cat Rescue is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of all cats: domestic, stray, abandoned, and feral. ACR advocates for humane nonlethal control of feral cats. For more information, visit their website https://www.saveacat.org.

Newsrooms were asked to define the most compelling gaps in their coverage. Based on feedback from the field:

  • More than half will cover diverse communities
  • Nearly half will report on the environment
  • Some 35% of the positions will focus on rural communities
  • A third will cover state politics

The selected newsrooms add 11 new positions as part of the Mississippi River Basin Ag and Water Desk. Seven beats involve statehouse coverage for The Associated Press. The positions also include a new partnership with the North Carolina Collaborative, led by Scalawag Magazine and The Assembly, which will bring a strong new local news cohort to North Carolina with reporters at five outlets: The Assembly, IndyWeek, CityView Today, Blue Ridge Public Radio, and WHQR.

The full list of new newsrooms and beats can be found here.

Now that the newsroom selections have been made, Report for America is seeking talented, service-minded journalists and photographers to join its reporting corps—a two-year program (with an option for three years) that delivers a wide range of benefits to its corps members.

  • Significant Beats: Report for America corps members cover a variety of beats, including healthcare, statehouse, climate, education, city hall, local business, communities of color, sports, religion, photography, and more.
  • Training and Mentorship: Report for America offers more than 70 training sessions per year, from experienced journalists and other experts, helping corps members sharpen their skills. We also pair you with a national mentor at the top of their game for additional skill-based/coverage gap-related support.
  • All-Around Support: In addition to a robust peer network of fellow corps members who are covering similar beats and living in nearby towns, Report for America’s regional managers—deeply experienced, award-winning journalists— are assigned to support every corps member and partner newsroom.
  • Community Service: Corps members volunteer their time on a student journalism or youth media project. The goal is to support the media literacy of young people by helping them produce stories about the world around them.
  • Springboard to Career Success: Report for America graduates get hired by their newsrooms or by other regional, national, and international outlets. Corps members win dozens of state, regional, and national awards.

“Report for America invites journalists from diverse backgrounds to weave their unique narratives into the fabric of local newsrooms. With a dedicated beat as their canvas, these storytellers ensure that every community’s voice is heard and critical issues are amplified,” said Earl Johnson, vice president of recruitment and alumni engagement at Report for America. “Through Report for America, journalists find not just a job but a calling—a perfect opportunity to make a profound difference where it matters most.”

Vinyl Institute Comments on Environmental Protection Agency Avian Test Order

The Biden EPA should be protecting birds, not running unnecessary tests on them.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 6, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Vinyl Institute (VI) presented its oral arguments regarding the U.S. EPA Avian Reproduction Test Order requirement for 1,1,2-Trichloroethane on Friday, December 1, 2023 (Vinyl Institute Inc. v. EPA, U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Case No. 22-1089). The statement below is attributed to Ned Monroe, President and CEO of the Vinyl Institute:

“The EPA did not adequately justify the need for this avian test order – and we object to this unnecessary animal testing. While we continue to comply with the EPA test order during this court challenge, we strongly object to the overreach, unjustified, and improper use of Agency resources on this particular testing. The EPA should be protecting birds, not running unnecessary tests on them.

“The vinyl industry is committed to protecting the safety of our workers, neighbors, and customers. Our industry’s OSHA safety record is outstanding. And we continue to be good faith partners with EPA on TSCA. We are trying to resolve differences and remain willing – active participants in providing the best possible data and technical information throughout these TSCA test order evaluations. We want to be part of the solution and ask the EPA to work collaboratively with industry experts as a resource much earlier in the test development process. This will help prevent the unnecessary animal testing and technical issues we identified through this TSCA test order.”

SandboxAQ Funds Two Full Scholarships for Trinity College Dublin’s Quantum Science and Technology Master’s Program

Ongoing collaboration helps train the future quantum workforce and bring greater diversity to the quantum ecosystem

DUBLIN, Dec. 6, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Continuing its mission to support quantum education and train a diverse future quantum workforce, SandboxAQ today announced it will be funding two full scholarships for Trinity College Dublin’s Master’s program in Quantum Science and Technology. The two “Trinity AQ Scholarships” will enable under-represented students to gain the advanced practical skills and knowledge needed to pursue future careers in AI and quantum (AQ) technologies.

Launched in 2021, Trinity College Dublin’s MSc Quantum Science and Technology degree comprises two semesters of intensive classes and a summer internship in a leading quantum hub such as the United States, Canada, France, and other countries. Starting in the Fall 2024 semester, the Trinity AQ Scholarship Program will cover tuition, living expenses, visa fees, and travel, providing a comprehensive support system for recipients throughout the one-year program. Students seeking information or to apply for the scholarship may visit https://www.tcd.ie/physics/quantumtech/scholarships/.

The scholarship program continues the collaboration between SandboxAQ and Trinity College Dublin to help grow a more diverse quantum workforce. In February, the two organizations co-hosted a two-day Diversity in Quantum event with DiviQ, providing participants from underrepresented groups with the information, communities, connections, and opportunities necessary to pursue quantum careers.

“As quantum science and technology is advancing around the globe, it is crucial to reduce entry barriers for students who are keen to become tomorrow’s experts in the field. SandboxAQ’s generous scholarships provide a wonderful opportunity for scholars from the Global South to embark on their journey into Quantum Science together with their peers from around the world. We look forward to welcoming them to Trinity”, says Prof. Felix Binder, Course Director of the MSc in Quantum Science and Technology and Assistant Professor in the School of Physics.

“Creating greater opportunities for women and under-represented communities in STEM and technology careers is incredibly important to Trinity, and for the growth and sustainability of the quantum ecosystem and technology sector overall,” said John Goold, Director of Trinity Quantum Alliance and Associate Professor in Trinity’s School of Physics, who delivered the scholarship program on the Trinity side, and who has worked closely with SandboxAQ over the past year. “We’re grateful to have visionary partners like SandboxAQ who understand the need for advanced STEM education and are investing in the future success of our students.”‥

“It’s an honor to support Trinity College Dublin in helping shape the future leaders of the AQ industry,” said Marianna Bonanome, Head of External Education Programs at SandboxAQ. “The Trinity AQ Scholarship Program is part of a larger initiative to help address the increasing global need for highly skilled AQ professionals. Through partners like Trinity College Dublin, we aim to foster greater diversity and innovation in quantum education, which will benefit the students and the entire quantum ecosystem.”

“To address the growing quantum and AI skills gap, we need to leverage all available human capital by reskilling and upskilling existing talent and extending education opportunities to traditionally underrepresented groups,” said Jack D. Hidary, CEO of SandboxAQ. “We hope this scholarship program with Trinity College Dublin will inspire others in the quantum industry to invest directly in increasing access and opportunity for more underrepresented groups to pursue a quantum education, which will help grow the quantum ecosystem.”

SandboxAQ’s education initiatives include relationships with dozens of universities and other organizations around the world. These institutions collaborate with SandboxAQ – either formally or informally – to expand their AI, quantum and STEM curricula; sponsor quantum labs and PhD candidates; host educational seminars; and provide students and postdoctoral researchers with grants, fellowships, mentorship, and hands-on experience working with cutting-edge AQ solutions. SandboxAQ has trained hundreds of graduate students and postdocs from 15 countries via its Residency Program, which embeds students directly into a SandboxAQ team using AQ technologies to solve real-world business and societal challenges.

Professor Lorraine Leeson, Associate Vice Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Trinity College Dublin, added: “I greatly welcome SandboxAQ’s commitment to fostering diversity in Quantum Science and Technology education through these two Trinity AQ Scholarships. This initiative aligns with Trinity’s mission to create inclusive opportunities that provide opportunities for students to flourish and excel, and, through the Trinity AQ Scholarships, work towards ensuring a quantum workforce that reflects the rich tapestry of global talent.”
