Spencer Krull Joins Side as Managing Broker of Southern California, Brings Decades of Expertise in Growing Elite Boutique Brands

Spencer Krull, Managing Broker of Southern California

Side, the only real estate brokerage that exclusively partners with high-performing agents, teams and independent brokerages to transform them into boutique brands and businesses, today announced that Spencer Krull has joined the company as Managing Broker of Southern California.

Most recently the General Manager of ultra-luxury brokerage Westside Estate Agency, Krull worked on deals from $89,000 to $89 million as a manager and broker for several offices, partnering collaboratively with agents to learn the nuances of each market.

In this role, Krull leverages his 17 years of experience as a licensed real estate agent, broker, trainer and coach to resolve the complex issues accompanying transactions in which market-leading boutique brands are involved.

“The brokerage business is at a crossroads,” said Krull. “Traditional companies aren’t providing agents with a clear value proposition, while some new-model brokerages are unsustainably buying agents to bring them over. Side is the first company I’ve seen where the technology is leveraged to allow agents to get in front of their clients — where business happens. Side actually delivers on what other brokerages promise.”

Krull’s appointment follows Side’s growth and momentum in Southern California’s most prominent cities and counties. Today, Side’s Southern California partners include, but are not limited to, Amalfi Estates, The Stroyke Properties Group, The Hobin Company, Edge Real Estate, Major League Properties, Revel Real Estate, and Power of 2 in Riverside, as well as Trillion Real Estate in Temecula. Side has also established a strategic engagement with visionary home designer Scott Gillen, founder of Unvarnished, which offers prospective homebuyers a concierge homebuying experience — from curation and construction to closing.

“We’re thrilled to have Spencer join our Brokerage team as Managing Broker of Southern California,” said Hilary Saunders, Chief Broker Officer for Side. “He brings unparalleled local expertise that will help grow and support the expanding number of elite brands and agents partnering with us in Southern California. Additionally, his experience in the luxury market provides a wonderful resource to our agents throughout the state.”

Side is led by experienced industry professionals who handle marketing and compliance and with world-class engineers who develop technology designed to improve agent productivity and enhance client experience. The company believes that homeownership is a fundamental human right, and Side is on a mission to improve the public good by empowering local, boutique real estate businesses with everything they need to deliver premium service, experience, and results to consumers.

Since its launch in 2017, Side has saved agents an average of 62 days per year, and Side partners have seen an average 45% year-over-year (“YoY”) growth rate, with some experiencing greater than 120% YoY growth. Side now powers over 500 real estate agents from the industry’s top 100 producing teams and is on track to represent over $8 billion in annual home sales by 2020.

About Side

Side transforms high-performing agents, teams and independent brokerages into successful businesses and boutique brands that are 100% agent-owned. Side exclusively partners with the best agents, empowering them with proprietary technology and a premier support team so they can be more productive, grow their business and focus on serving their clients. AI Drives Patent Applications from U.S. Companies at the European Patent Office to New Record High

News Image

Europe remains a highly relevant technology market for U.S. companies, knowing they can rely on a quality patent system that helps them build strong IP portfolios.

The European Patent Office (EPO) today announced that U.S. companies and inventors filed over 46,200 European patent applications in 2019, 5.5% more than in the previous year, according to its Patent Index 2019 (Graph: Growth of patent applications at the EPO from the U.S.). With a share of 25% of all patent applications, the U.S. remained the most active country of origin for patent applications filed with the EPO (Graph: Origin of applications).

The growth in patent applications from the U.S. was largely driven by the rise of 5G and artificial intelligence (AI): there were strong increases in computer technology, where many of the patent applications in AI are filed (+13.6%, following a decrease of 2.2% in the previous year), and in digital communication, which includes the technologies that are central to implementing 5G networks (+14.6%, following a decrease of 7.5% in the previous year).

“Patent applications from the U.S. grew strongly at the EPO in 2019, with the U.S. being one of the main drivers in making digital communication and computer technology the fastest rising technology fields,” said EPO President António Campinos. “This shows that Europe remains a highly relevant technology market for U.S. companies, knowing they can rely on a quality patent system that helps them build strong IP portfolios.”

Overall, the European Patent Office received 181,000 patent applications in 2019, an increase of 4% compared to 2018 (Graph: Growth of European patent applications). The growth was mainly fueled by significantly more applications coming from China (+29.2% over 2018), the U.S. and South Korea (+14.1%). (Graph: Top 50 countries for applications). In the past decade, patent filings from China with the EPO have increased nearly six-fold (12,247 applications in 2019 vs. 2,061 in 2010.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES ON THE RISE

Digital communication and computer technology were the dominant fields of technology at the EPO overall. These sectors posted the highest growth of all technology fields, with digital communication overtaking medical technology, which had been the most patent-active segment since 2006. With an increase of 65%, Chinese companies contributed most to the growth in digital communication patent applications, with U.S. (+15%) and South Korean firms (+36%) following suit. In terms of share, China, the U.S. and Europe each accounted for roughly a quarter of all patent applications filed with the EPO in 2019 in this field, with China pulling slightly ahead of the U.S. and Europe for the first time. The top applicants in the field in 2019 were Huawei, Ericsson and Qualcomm (Graph: Leading applicants, digital communication).

In computer technology, U.S. companies accounted for 38% of all patent application in that field and saw 14% growth over 2018. Applications from China (+19%) made up nearly 11%. The leading applicants in 2019 were Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Samsung, Huawei and Intel (Graph: Leading applicants, computer technology).

U.S. COMPANIES STRONGEST IN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY, PHARMACEUTICALS, COMPUTING

U.S. companies were particularly strong in medical technology, which remained the largest field for patent applications at the EPO from U.S. companies with a growth of 6.3%. U.S. firms accounted for 40% of all patent applications in this sector at the EPO in 2019. Other U.S. strongholds included pharmaceuticals with a 39% share, computer technology with a 38% share, and biotechnology with 32% of all patent applications at the EPO in that field.

The strongest growth among the 15 most important U.S. technology fields was recorded in transport, which includes the automotive and aeronautics sectors, where patent applications from U.S. companies at the EPO grew by 17%.

UNITED TECHNOLOGIES NO. 1 U.S. PATENT APPLICANT

For the second year in a row, United Technologies was the most active U.S. patent applicant at the EPO with 2,813 patent applications, again followed by Qualcomm (1,668 applications) and General Electric (1,247). Rounding out the top five were Alphabet (1,196) and Microsoft (1,112), which moved up to fourth and fifth position (Graph: Top U.S. applicants at the EPO in 2019).

HUAWEI HEADS THE LIST OF APPLICANTS

Huawei topped the table of patent applicants at the EPO in 2019 with 3,524 applications, almost two thirds of which were filed in digital communication. Samsung moved up to second place and LG gained a position to take third. The two South Korean firms were followed by United Technologies and the top applicant of 2018, Siemens, which dropped to fifth place. Qualcomm ranked as the sixth-largest patent applicant (Graph: Top ten applicants at the EPO in 2019).

For detailed statistics, see the EPO Patent Index 2019 at http://www.epo.org/patent-index2019

James Scott Farrin Attorney Rosa Antunez Boatwright Elected to Diamante Board of Directors

NC Personal Injury Attorney Rosa Antunez Boatwright Elected to Diamante Board of Directors

“The Center’s cultural outreach helps bring people together, educates the community about the varying Latin cultures, and keeps our heritage alive for future generations. I’m eager to contribute my efforts and skills to that goal,” said NC Personal Injury Attorney Rosa Antunez Boatwright.

Rosa Antunez Boatwright, personal injury attorney at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors at the Diamante Arts & Cultural Center – the oldest Latino/Hispanic Arts and Culture organization in North Carolina. The Center is dedicated to the preservation, development, and promotion of the culture, heritage, and artistic expressions of the diverse Latino/Hispanic community.

Her inclusion to the Board will position her to continue to help the Latino/Hispanic community, which is one of her passions, and enable her to affect even more positive change. She will help oversee community engagement activities that help develop understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic/Latino community with all of its diversity, cultural norms, and contributions. Her first meeting as a member of the board is in April.

“I am truly honored to be accepted into the Diamante Arts & Cultural Center Board of Directors,” said Boatwright. “The Center’s cultural outreach helps bring people together, educates the community about the varying Latin cultures, and keeps our heritage alive for future generations. I’m eager to contribute my efforts and skills to that goal.”

The Diamante Arts & Cultural Center offers programs that advance Hispanic/Latino culture, arts, and creativity. It designs and implements initiatives to enable cross-community collaboration, networking, and action. The Center is also responsible for creative opportunities that engage people from all cultural backgrounds to engage in arts education, leadership, community service, and economic development.

Mrs. Boatwright’s appointment did not surprise her peers at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, who recognize her as a passionate advocate, something that serves her well in her practice as a personal injury attorney representing those who have been injured through no fault of their own. Her community and cultural involvement are well-known around the office.

“We’re very fortunate to have Rosa on our team,” said James S. Farrin, founder and President. “She’s a powerful advocate for clients. Her appointment to the board is a result of her passion to help people, particularly those in the Latino community.”

As a child, Mrs. Boatwright immigrated with her family after Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras and destroyed their home. She grew up with a strong work ethic, and worked her way through both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she obtained her degree in Psychology, and the North Carolina Central School of Law in Durham, where she obtained her J.D.

More Than One-Third of Quality Assurance Spending Devoted to ‘Next-Generation Role’ in Digital Transformation—Everest Group

Everest Group

With next-generation applications becoming the fulcrum of enterprises’ competitive edge, quality assurance needs to take center stage.

In 2019 more than one-third of enterprise spending on quality assurance (QA) was devoted to next-generation technologies rather than traditional QA activities, representing a 23% jump in next-generation QA spending since 2017, according to Everest Group. Everest Group predicts the QA market will witness radical transformation in the next three to five years as enterprises address the challenges brought by the increasing industrialization of next-generation technology applications, such as Internet of Things (IoT), big data, cloud native, augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and distributed ledger.

Recently, QA standards have been strained by enterprises’ adoption of Agile/DevOps methodology. For example, QA too often has been pursued as an afterthought rather than a strategic activity, and a focus on faster time-to-market has pushed QA to the back burner or made it a severely time-constrained activity.

“With next-generation applications becoming the fulcrum of enterprises’ competitive edge, quality assurance needs to take center stage,” said Yugal Joshi, vice president at Everest Group. “In the recent past, we’ve witnessed how even technology leaders like Google, Facebook, Amazon and GitLab have experienced QA shortfalls, underscoring the need for enterprises to transform the QA role and function.

“Gone are the days when QA is relegated to gathering quality metrics at the end of a process; QA must evolve to play a critical role as a process innovation engine. Next-generation QA teams not only need a knowledge of emerging technologies but also the skills and adaptability to contribute and innovate within more agile, inclusive and automation-led delivery models. This means organizations must redefine QA talent requirements, organizational structure, methodology and use of technology.”

Everest Group explores these findings in its recently published Application Services State of the Market Report, “Next-Generation QA Services – From Mundane Existence to Innovation Engine.” The report presents a comprehensive analysis of the next-generation QA services market.

Selected Highlights:

  • QA is increasingly getting embedded in development processes, exhibiting convergence of QA spend with development spend.
  • Within next-generation QA, cloud native, big data and IoT are the leading investment themes with more than a 60% share.
  • End consumer-centric industries—such as banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and healthcare—are leading the charge of adopting next-generation QA services to stand differentiated amongst peers and attract users.
  • North America and Europe lead in adoption of next generation QA services, largely because these regions also lead in increased next-generation technology adoption and policies geared toward consumer protection.
  • Enterprises recognize the evolving talent needs but are still exploring different means to achieve the desired level of talent readiness. Eighty-five percent of QA leaders believe up-skilling the existing talent base is an urgent requirement.
  • Service providers are currently not measuring up to emerging enterprise expectations for QA services; only 31% of enterprises are open to working with new QA providers.

Leader in transportation safety joins MAGTEC

We know Gary’s unrelenting pursuit of safety, excellence and saving lives will go such a long way toward helping our customers reach their goals of reducing risks and helping drivers and passengers get home safely each day.

One of North America’s most respected transportation safety specialists, Gary Catapano, has joined MAGTEC to help promote SafeSpeed®—the intelligent vehicle management system that limits the maximum speed to posted speed limits and allows customers to remotely disable moving vehicles safely in emergencies.

“Gary’s unique and long-standing perspective on safety and safer travel will be an enormous benefit to our company and all of our stakeholders, especially passengers,” Bob Morisset, president and CEO, MAGTEC Products Inc. “We know Gary’s unrelenting pursuit of safety, excellence and saving lives will go such a long way toward helping our customers reach their goals of reducing risks and helping drivers and passengers get home safely each day.”

Catapano has been named MAGTEC’s Chief Strategy & Safety Advisor, a new position for the Calgary-based company. During Catapano’s 25-year career as a transportation safety professional, he has held senior executive safety positions at large passenger transportation companies, including his most recent post as First Student’s Senior Vice President of Safety, a position he held for 14 years. At First Student, he led safety decisions for school bus operations that impacted more than 55,000 school buses transporting students across North America every day. Catapano also served as the Senior Safety Advisor and Chair of the First Group America’s Safety Council, which provided safety guidance and review of First Transit as well as First Student, Greyhound, and First Vehicle Services—companies operating more than 70,000 school bus, motor coach and transit buses.

Catapano says he joined MAGTEC because he believes in the higher purpose of SafeSpeed®, the company’s speed-limiting technology.

“Speeding is one of the major causes of serious crashes and fatalities on our highways. In all of my years of work as a highway safety professional, I searched for a product like this,” says Catapano. “It is truly the Holy Grail of safety technology for preventing speeding, and it helps companies to operate safely and demonstrate care for the lives of their employees, passengers and everyone else on the road.”

Catapano also brings to MAGTEC a passion for sharing his safety expertise beyond the corporate world. He served as chair of the National Safety Councils Transportation Safety Division and on its board of safety delegates. He also served the National School Transportation Association for five consecutive terms as chair of the Safety and Security Committee. In addition, he has shared his safety and security experience and expertise with, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Agency, Transportation Security Agency, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration helping to guide decision-making for transportation safety policy.

MAGTEC began developing and manufacturing commercial intelligent vehicle control systems to help prevent Jeep theft during Operation Desert Storm, and has since designed systems used to prevent vehicle and cargo theft, speeding and more for fleets that transport everything from high-value pharmaceuticals to oil and gas. The company is now focusing on promoting the use of its speed-limiting technology on school and transit buses, motorcoach, and commercial trucking.

“Protecting passengers, drivers and other highway users is what our products are all about, so we’re excited to have Gary build awareness about how SafeSpeed® can help make transportation safer,” says Morisset.

SafeSpeed® harnesses advanced proprietary technology to automatically and proactively limit bus and truck speeds according to posted speed limits in real time, and it’s the only device of its kind. The technology also helps mitigate the risks of speeding-related crashes when drivers suffer from medical issues, and also allows fleet managers to remotely disable moving vehicles in the event of hijackings.

ABOUT MAGTEC

MAGTEC specializes in developing and manufacturing commercial intelligent vehicle control systems that help prevent theft, reduce speeding and enhance safety compliance for all classes of vehicles, including heavy equipment industries. One of its newest intelligent speed-limiting technology products, SafeSpeed®, is a patented solution that automatically limits vehicle speeds to posted speed limits in real time. MAGTEC’S headquarters are in Calgary, Alberta, and the company operates two wholly owned subsidiaries, MAGTEC Products (USA), Inc. and MAGTEC Asia, Inc. https://magtec.com/

Wholesale Screening Solutions Launches Industry-First Continuous Court Activity Monitoring for the Background Screening Industry

Continuous Court Activity Monitoring

The industry was asking for a real solution to monitoring, and we rethought the problem and created something radically different.

Leading public records research provider, Wholesale Screening Solutions, announces the launch of its continuous court activity monitoring solution. The solution uses intelligent automation to deliver authoritative court records data to consumer reporting agencies (CRAs) in the background screening industry. While it is common for continuous monitoring solutions to report arrest data, Wholesale Screening Solutions says its solution is a disruptive innovation that enables CRAs to deliver a more complete, more actionable set of data to end users.

In a recent Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA) article, Wholesale Screening Solutions highlighted continuous monitoring as a top trend in the background screening industry for 2020. For several years, the company has seen an increasing demand among CRAs for solutions that can help their clients better mitigate ongoing risks inherent in the workforce. Recognizing that employee circumstances and backgrounds change over time, continuous monitoring can help keep a pulse on employee backgrounds beyond the point of hire and alert employers of changes that may impact workplace safety, productivity, policy compliance and contractual and regulatory requirements.

“When we started to look at building a continuous monitoring solution here at Wholesale Screening, there was a strong level of cynicism within the CRA industry about the viability of existing solutions,” remarked Matthew Lowers, President of Wholesale Screening Solutions. “It was obvious that many people didn’t think a real solution was possible and this challenge became our motivation to make it happen,” he continued.

“Arrest data is simply not enough to meet the needs of most end users for complete and actionable information,” explains Lowers. “The industry was asking for a real solution to monitoring, and we rethought the problem and created something radically different,” he continues.

Wholesale Screening Solution’s continuous monitoring solution promises to deliver complete, customizable, and actionable court records data via a secure web interface that can be white labeled for CRAs. The data is more complete than other solutions because it provides both arrest data and the resulting court level activity for arrests that enter the court system. The data sets and sources can be customized to meet the unique risk tolerance for each end user. With this more holistic view of an employee’s current background, end users can make better-informed decisions.
