Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago Names Diane Glass CEO

Diane Glass, CEO, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago

Diane stands out as an insightful, compassionate and decisive leader.

Chicago Real Estate Brokerage Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago announced that Diane Glass was promoted to Chief Executive Officer. As the head of the firm’s Strategic Leadership Team of President Mark Pasquesi and Senior VP and General Manager Joe Stacy, she will be responsible for the company’s 1,500 real estate professionals in 24 offices serving the Chicago metro area, southwest Michigan, northwest Indiana and southeast Wisconsin, as well as the company’s affiliated lending, title and insurance businesses.

In the last twelve months, Glass and the team have navigated the brokerage through a name change, expanded the new Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago brand to Downers Grove and River Forest, and celebrated the company’s naming as the #1 Top Workplace in Chicago in 2019 by the Chicago Tribune.

“Diane stands out as an insightful, compassionate and decisive leader. Her creative ideas have elevated the operational excellence of the company and her open communication style has fostered deep connections with agents, managers and employees,” said Gino Blefari, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and CEO of HomeServices of America, the parent company of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago. “Her leadership during these extraordinary times has well-positioned the company for future growth and its ability to capitalize on the quick recovery of the Chicago metro real estate market.”

Even before Illinois and the surrounding states enacted Stay at Home Orders this spring, Glass acted swiftly, transforming the offices to remote work within days, in the midst of a very strong spring real estate market. The affiliated lending and title companies, Prosperity Home Mortgage and Fort Dearborn Title were the first to offer zero touch video closings. And Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago agents were the first to establish Virtual Open Houses on social media when traditional open houses weren’t allowed.

“Diane exemplifies the leadership attributes of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and the Forever Brand ideals,” said Chris Stuart, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “We are excited about the company’s new energy and ideas, and how they are using the Forever Agent platform and the global reach of the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices brand as a springboard for growth.”

“Last year, we implemented a new model for real estate leadership by bringing together three experts in areas that are key to agent success,” said Blefari. “This talented, agile team has exceeded our expectations with the commitment to all-inclusive real estate service and creating exceptional customer experiences.”

Glass has been the company’s Chief Operating Officer since 2016, after being the VP of Sales Development and managing branch offices.

Cybersecurity Startup Spyderbat Raises $4.2M To Usher in New Era of Security Operations

“We realized an entirely new approach was needed to revolutionize security operations to radically improve its efficiency,” Marc Willebeek-LeMair, CEO, Spyderbat

Spyderbat, Inc. announced today that it has raised $4.2M in seed funding led by LiveOak Venture Partners and Benhamou Global Ventures with participation from cybersecurity veteran, John McHale. The company will use the capital to accelerate development of its product launch later this year.

The Spyderbat founding team includes cybersecurity pioneers Marc Willebeek-LeMair and Brian Smith, former founders and executives of Click Security and TippingPoint. Venu Shamapant from LiveOak Venture Partners and Venkat Raghavan from Benhamou Global Ventures have joined the company’s board of directors.

“Security operations today lack clear information to identify and resolve early indications of a threat,” states Spyderbat’s CEO Marc Willebeek-LeMair. “Shifts to cloud-native environments exacerbate this challenge. Today, triage and investigation are painfully complex, time-consuming, and often lead to erroneous or inconclusive results. We realized an entirely new approach was needed to revolutionize security operations to radically improve its efficiency.”

“Marc and Brian are addressing one of the biggest challenges in security operations,” says Venu Shamapant, Founding Partner at LiveOak Venture Partners. “We recognize the experience of the founders to deliver market-changing innovations and are excited to accelerate their efforts.”

Long-time cybersecurity veteran John McHale adds, “I have known Marc and Brian for a long time and am continually impressed with their ingenuity, passion, and inventiveness they bring to each of their companies. With TippingPoint, they realized an entirely new solution was needed for recognizing network-borne threats and invented the IPS. Similarly, they have wiped the board clean and invented entirely new capabilities with Spyderbat.”

“Security analysts are forced into bad tradeoffs from lack of time, inexorable alert volumes and ambiguous context, which lead to missed early warning signals from ignored alerts and inconclusive investigations. Marc and Brian are pioneering a new approach to reimagine security operations in the Cloud Native world,” says Venkat Raghavan from Benhamou Global Ventures.

“We are grateful to have the backing of LiveOak Venture Partners, BGV, and John McHale,” adds Marc Willebeek-LeMair. “Their wisdom and support strengthens our ability to continue innovating and delivering high-value solutions to enterprise customers.”

Has the Lockdown Forever Changed the Art, Vintage and Antiques Industry?

Stacey Tiveron, Founder and CEO Ronati

Stacey Tiveron, Founder and CEO Ronati

There is no longer a worry that buyers do not have the confidence to purchase high-value pieces online.

In 2019, close to two billion people purchased items online — but most of the sellers of art, vintage, and antiques lost out. Why? Because the vast majority of the art and antiques industry are not online. Worse, as a result of recent events, their stock is now locked in warehouses, galleries, and closed shops.

This industry, like many others, was awestruck in the first weeks of the global lockdown talking about its fate, worried about their near- and long-term future. Leading auction houses and fairs quickly moved to replace in-person events with virtual ones, auctions, and showcases with great results—proving that buyers are not only interested but are now purchasing online.

One recent example was Sotheby’s game-changing $300 million-plus online auction launched on June 29th. Another is Artsy’s significant increases in both gallery adoption and in-platform transactions.

If there IS a silver lining to the temporary closing of art and antiques fairs and markets this year, it is the industry realization that the online sales channel not only works, but must be employed as one of the methods to connect with potential buyers.

Dealers are now grappling with the question of how to get the attention of the right buyers online. One could argue they should immediately invest thousands to create a sophisticated website and hire an online marketing firm to get the process in motion. There is nothing wrong with that approach, except it takes weeks, months, or longer to see results where it matters—on the bottom line.

The fastest way for any dealer to connect with buyers most likely interested in purchasing their unique items is to make them visible where the buyers are already shopping: online marketplaces. More than twenty of these destinations exist for art, antiques, and vintage items.

Marketplaces focused on art, vintage and antique items have built-in communities of consumers, interior designers, and retail purchasers. Dealers can list their pieces on those that most speak to their period, style, and price point. Just a few of these include 1stdibs, Decorative Collective, eBay, Artsy, InCollect, LoveAntiques, Chairish, and Sotheby’s Home.

The more appropriate marketplaces a dealer lists on, the more exposure they have to potential buyers. Studies show that sellers who list on multiple marketplaces see exponentially higher sales. Marketplaces are not the only online destinations to reach these buyers, however. Now, we’re seeing more traditional auction houses adding “buy it now” sections, essentially creating their own marketplaces with more traditional online auctions running in tandem.

A once resistive-to-change industry is finally starting to modernize, and there is no turning back.

There is no longer a worry that buyers do not have the confidence to purchase high-value pieces online. For dealers, this is excellent news. It is time to take the leap.

“There is no one in the industry more deserving of this honor than Paul,” said Hernan Olivas, president and chief executive officer for ONEIL.

Paul Haslam, Principal S1000D & S-Series IPS Specifications Expert for O’Neil & Associates (ONEIL), earned international recognition as a recipient of the Aerospace Industries Association’s (AIA) prestigious Leonard Ross Memorial Award for Achievement. The award is given to an individual who has exhibited individual excellence, outstanding performance, and long-term achievement in product support on behalf of the aerospace and defense industry.

Haslam, involved in the production and continuance of the S1000D specification since 1999, has worked to improve the entire suite of S-Series ILS specifications for U.S. and international adoption. This award recognizes his commitment, extensive knowledge, and focused strategy to bring aerospace specifications into alignment.

“There is no one in the industry more deserving of this honor than Paul,” said Hernan Olivas, president and chief executive officer for ONEIL. “He has worked tirelessly for nearly 16 years to coordinate, educate and liaison with senior staff of the U.S. armed services for the widespread adoption of specifications, and his work has created countless positive economic, technical and engineering outcomes. We are proud to call him one of our own and celebrate this significant achievement alongside him.”

Due to COVID-19, AIA was unable to present the award in person. But Haslam received a personalized plaque and his name was inscribed on the Len Ross trophy alongside names of other recipients who came before him.

“Paul puts his whole heart into his work, demonstrating the ideals Len Ross celebrated when he envisioned this award,” said Joe Spruill, CAPT, SC, USN (Ret.), of Lockheed Martin, and Chair of the Aerospace Industries Association Product Support Committee. “His shepherding of the Integrated Product Support Standards has truly resulted in improved and more affordable sustainment for the warfighter.”

In 1989, Leonard Ross, former vice chairman of the AIA Product Support Committee, established the exceptional service award as a peer recognition of long-term achievements for past and present members of the committee. Upon his passing, the award was renamed to honor him.

SIUE Student Affairs Names Boddie Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion

SIUE Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion and Director of Counseling Services Courtney Boddie, PhD.

“We now need to focus on infusing equity-mindedness in all aspects of practice. This is part in parcel of how we institutionalize factors like anti-racism.”

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jeffrey Waple, PhD, has amplified the leadership of Courtney Boddie, PhD, director of Counseling Services, with the added role of Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion.

Boddie is a respected campus leader with extensive experience and academic expertise in the areas of minority stress and cultural trauma, both of which link culture to psychological wellness.

As Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion, he will serve as a member of the Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team and a divisional consultant to offer support services, review policies and contribute to training. He will chair the Division of Student Affairs Diversity and Inclusion Committee, oversee the progress and implementation of the Student Affairs portions of the University Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan, and serve as a divisional liaison for multiple initiatives being led across campus.

“I look forward to working with Dr. Boddie and our entire Division on these critical issues, and to create action steps to advance professional practice and remove institutional barriers in order to improve student success, retention and graduation,” said Waple. “In this role, Dr. Boddie will provide oversight to our diversity and inclusion efforts with emphasis on policy, training, consultation and connectivity.”

“Dr. Boddie brings many talents to this new role, including his own lived experiences and expertise in multicultural counseling,” added Dean of Students Kara Shustrin. “We are excited to have Dr. Boddie on the Student Affairs leadership team to guide us in looking at the division from a 30,000-foot view, and to review policies, training, programs, staff hiring and development, with diversity and inclusion as a centerpiece to better serve our students.”

Boddie asserts that to be student-ready, culture needs to be centralized as a major variable for decision-making. According to Boddie, students need to be engaged as cultural beings, who possess group identities, stressors and strengths.

“As higher education has diversified, it has yet to jettison its original design, one crafted to work only for white, wealthy, young, highly verbal, cishet, able, U.S.-born men,” he said. “As such, in a reactionary manner, we are often attempting to retrofit a clunky and inflexible system to accommodate cultural differences. This must change. We now need to focus on infusing equity-mindedness in all aspects of practice. This is part in parcel of how we institutionalize factors like anti-racism.”

Boddie aims to apply his professional skills and themes of triage, assessment, diagnosis and treatment to support the division in fulfilling its commitment to student readiness.

“As a mental health provider, my job is to quickly establish a trusting relationship in the rich cultural context of a patient’s life,” Boddie explained. “Ultimately, I seek to support the patient in becoming aware of and motivated to change problematic patterns in living.”

“As director of the center that provides these services,” he continued, “I am a veritable treasure trove of structural, institutional and interpersonal ills of a cultural nature. I note this as my professional practices are grounded in our fields’ multicultural and social justice competencies. These competencies guide us not only to address concerns as they present to the clinic, but also require that we engage in structural advocacy to reduce the likelihood that said concerns would present at all.”

An accomplished academic and proven student champion, Boddie knows the challenges will be many, but believes the SIUE community has a genuine interest in overcoming challenges and removing barriers in order to dismantle systemic racism.

“While my role will centralize and streamline divisional diversity and inclusion efforts, I am in no way a compliance or optics officer,” he concluded. “I am here to support everyone in doing their work as individuals and professionals committed to true student readiness.”

Boddie has been director of Counseling Services since July 2017 and served as interim director of the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion from October 2018-Jan. 2020.

He is actively engaged in University service, including initiatives such as Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation, Scholarly Connections and Rewarding Engagement, African American Male Initiative, University Diversity Council, and the Anti-Racism Task Force. He teaches courses in the Department of Psychology, including Psychosocial Foundation of African American Worldviews and Multicultural Counseling.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville provides students with a high quality, affordable education that prepares them for successful careers and lives of purpose to shape a changing world. Built on the foundation of a broad-based liberal education, and enhanced by hands-on research and real-world experiences, the academic preparation SIUE students receive equips them to thrive in the global marketplace and make our communities better places to live. Situated on 2,660 acres of beautiful woodland atop the bluffs overlooking the natural beauty of the Mississippi River’s rich bottomland and only a short drive from downtown St. Louis, the SIUE campus is home to a diverse student body of more than 13,000.
