SIUE Selects Ettling as Director of Online and Education Outreach

Mary Ettling, SIUE Office of Online and Education Outreach director.

“There was a moment where it became quite clear that if I could help people upskill, prepare for the next job, or reach the dream of earning a degree, I would be personally and professionally fulfilled. I am truly honored to serve SIUE and the community in this role.”

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has selected Mary Ettling as the director of the Office of Online and Education Outreach following a national search. After serving as the interim director since 2017 and at the conclusion of a search, Ettling assumed her new responsibilities on May 26, 2020.

Ettling and her staff work to provide community programs and continuing professional education, while also providing support to academic units offering online, off-campus and corporate-sponsored educational activities.

“Mary brings a wealth of experience in understanding SIUE, and our commitment to the community and the region,” said Associate Provost Elza Ibroscheva, PhD. “She has offered steady leadership, especially during the unexpected disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to seeing her grow the University’s footprint as a key partner, and a vast resource for the growing educational needs of our community and the region.”

A Northeastern Ohio native, Ettling attributes her passion for education and service to non-traditional students to her early experiences. “Watching the steel mills in my area close down had a profound impact on me as a child,” she said. “Men and women without college degrees were, quite suddenly, without work or transferrable skills. Most who were laid off didn’t talk about the experience, but their obvious anxiety spoke volumes.

“There was a moment where it became quite clear that if I could help people upskill, prepare for the next job, or reach the dream of earning a degree, I would be personally and professionally fulfilled. I am truly honored to serve SIUE and the community in this role.”

Ettling’s team has recently collaborated on an initiative to launch additional online degree completion programs. The Office of Online Student Services has opened to support four completion programs. In collaboration with county workforce boards, the office intends to offer several new digital badges in support of emerging workforce needs.

“In spite of COVID-19 and in response to our current climate of civil unrest, the Office stands ready to support responsible, relevant programming to enrich lives of our diverse society,” Ettling said.

With more than a decade of experience at SIUE, Ettling has also held positions at Saint Louis University, the University of Oklahoma and the Geilenkirchen Army Education Center, as well as several elementary teaching positions.

Ettling earned a bachelor’s in elementary education from Kent State University, a master’s in adult and higher education from the University of Oklahoma, and most recently earned a post master’s certificate in enrollment management from Capella University.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville provides students with a high quality, affordable education that prepares them for successful careers and lives of purpose to shape a changing world. Built on the foundation of a broad-based liberal education, and enhanced by hands-on research and real-world experiences, the academic preparation SIUE students receive equips them to thrive in the global marketplace and make our communities better places to live. Situated on 2,660 acres of beautiful woodland atop the bluffs overlooking the natural beauty of the Mississippi River’s rich bottomland and only a short drive from downtown St. Louis, the SIUE campus is home to a diverse student body of more than 13,000.

Indeflex Welcomes Nicholas Korthals as New National Sales Director

“…with over a decade in the payments industry and real field knowledge, I bring a higher level of support and ideas that any agent can leverage to their advantage.

Indeflex, an entrepreneur-centric merchant services firm, is thrilled to announce the addition of another top-notch sale professional, Nick Korthals, to the team as a National Sales Director. Nick will be responsible for coaching merchant services sales partners to help them excel. Nick initially joined Indeflex as an independent sales partner in September 2019 and says, “Working with Indeflex has been excellent. The support and team environment are top-notch, and it just keeps getting better. I’m looking forward to bringing true support and transparency to the sales partners, and I know my field experience will be vital to their success.”

Indeflex is touted as the best merchant services sales organization in the country to work for and is building a top-tier team of trainers to reinforce this reputation. Paul Dobson, Indeflex Managing Partner, says, “There is a global need in our industry for agents to be supported and treated fairly, and training them on not only how and what to sell, but how to support their merchants so they continue to see those residuals for years to come, is so vital to their long-term success in the industry.” Indeflex sales partners have a distinct competitive advantage in that the trainers here have real-world field experience and truly understand the day-to-day obstacles sales partners face. Nick Korthals says, “From first-hand experience, the support that Indeflex provides each sales partner is beyond anything I’ve ever seen. They will build an entire program for a specific agent to meet their needs or to help them make a sale. They understand that different regions require different tools, and they pull out all the stops to give them anything they need to be successful.”

Mr. Korthals started in payments in 2009 at Central Payment, where he signed more than 450 merchant accounts in his first two-years. From there, Nick became the National Sales Director at PDX Enterprise Solutions & VP of Sales at Priority Payments PDX, where he managed a large team of sales agents and a portfolio of hundreds of merchant accounts that processed over $1 billion in transaction volume. Then in 2014, Nick founded Cpay WI, which would eventually evolve into Kore Payment and has seen steep growth in recent years. Kore is currently processing more than $100 million in transaction volume, with an average of over 90 thousand transactions per month. “Kore has a year-over-year growth rate of 200%,” Nick explains.

Indeflex Managing Partner Phil Krivacek says, “Nick recently joined the Indeflex team full-time after being one of our top-producing sales partners, and our nationwide team of sales executives are thrilled at the opportunity to work with and learn from him. Nick is the real deal. He is hands-on, responsive, creative, and passionate. He loves helping agents traverse the same journey he has, so they can reap the rewards of their hard work.”

Nick is looking forward to changing an industry that is traditionally managed by directors with little to no field experience at all. “…with over a decade in the payments industry and real field knowledge, I bring a higher level of support and ideas that any agent can leverage to their advantage.”

The North American Passive House Network Board of Directors Has Appointed Ken Levenson Executive Director

Bronwyn Barry, the North American Passive House Network (NAPHN) Board of Directors Chair, has announced the appointment of Ken Levenson as Executive Director, effective immediately.

“In planning to grow NAPHN’s capacity, reach, and effectiveness, we are delighted to appoint Ken Levenson as our first Executive Director. His record as a professional with a long track record in the Passive House movement, combined with his exemplary commitment to NAPHN is unparalleled. It bodes well for the success of our community,” said Bronwyn Barry, in announcing the appointment.

In 2010, Ken was a founding board member of New York Passive House (NYPH) and the Passive House Alliance. In 2011 he was a founder of NAPHN, and also co-founded 475 High Performance Building Supply, a company dedicated to Passive House building. He served as the company’s COO until late 2019. For the past year, Ken has been increasingly focused on volunteer efforts for the global climate civil disobedience group Extinction Rebellion (XR).

In addition to XR volunteering Ken has been volunteering full-time on the successful production of the groundbreaking online NAPHN 2020 conference, as it shifted at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, from a two-day in-person event to an event spread out over six weeks – that recently concluded. Ken plans to build on this momentum, in growing NAPHN educational programs and community-building activities.

“The conference ended up playing out not just during a pandemic but during the Black Lives Matter protests too, and both affected me deeply,” said Ken, “reinforcing the direct connections between climate crisis imperatives and what it means to deliver truly sustainable communities for all. In this context, I look forward to energizing NAPHN efforts, working with professionals, policymakers, and developers, to enhance our metrics of success.”

Levenson went on to say, “2020 is a frightening year, and the risks are many, but so too is a growing awareness as to root problems and their solutions. Given this, I believe NAPHN is uniquely positioned to leverage the cumulative knowledge of our global Passive House movement, and our shared American experience, to help drive industry transformation across the US. Society can’t just survive. We need to thrive. It is our mission.”

Raised in Southern Vermont, Ken graduated from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1989 and then practiced architecture in New York City until 2011. Ken lives in Brooklyn NY, with his wife, the investigative journalist, Katherine Eban, two daughters, and their Newfoundland dog, Romeo.

Propark’s ‘Carma’ charitable outreach program is important to us, and to have some of our trusted vendors join us in our cause to fight hunger during this global pandemic was inspirational.

Propark Mobility announced today that the company has raised nearly $1,000 for Foodshare, Greater Hartford’s largest anti-hunger organization, at the recent Park & View Family Movie Night at Z Airport Parking in East Granby, Connecticut.

“With everything taking place in today’s world, we felt that we could take our empty parking lot and, for one night, convert it into an entertaining family experience before we reopened for business at Bradley Airport,” explained John Schmid, Chief Executive Officer of Propark Mobility. “Through sponsorships and donations, we were able to take a fun night and turn it into something even more meaningful by giving back to our community.”

Staff from Propark Mobility’s corporate headquarters in Hartford volunteered time at the event.

“Propark’s ‘Carma’ charitable outreach program is important to us, and to have some of our trusted vendors join us in our cause to fight hunger during this global pandemic was inspirational,” said Joe Coppola, Propark Mobility’s Managing Partner. “We’re honored to be able to work alongside some great businesses to raise money for Foodshare to provide up to 2,000 meals to help fight hunger here in Connecticut, and we had a lot of fun doing so.”

Jump Capital Leads $8 Million Series B Extension for IRONSCALES

News Image

IRONSCALES is a recognized industry leader in anti-phishing for new-age cloud email ecosystems and its comprehensive self-learning security platform combines advanced machine learning with human intelligence to continuously evolve with the phishing landscape.

IRONSCALES, the pioneer of self-learning email security, today announced it has closed an $8 million Series B extension led by Chicago-based venture and growth capital firm Jump Capital. The additional funding will add to the $15 million previously contributed by current investor K1 Investment Management. A global leader in anti-phishing innovation, IRONSCALES plans to use the funding to further accelerate its aggressive growth strategy through market expansion and ongoing research and development of its email security platform.

As a result of the partnership, Jump Capital Partner Saurabh Sharma will join the IRONSCALES Board of Directors. Saurabh leads IT Infrastructure and Application Software investments for Jump Capital and brings a diverse background in investing, operations and product management.

“Phishing remains one of the largest attack vectors for cybercriminals. Even though enterprises are investing heavily in cloud-native security infrastructure, they still rely on legacy secure email gateway products to fight increasingly sophisticated and socially engineered phishing attacks,” said Sharma. “IRONSCALES is a recognized industry leader in anti-phishing for new-age cloud email ecosystems and its comprehensive self-learning security platform combines advanced machine learning with human intelligence to continuously evolve with the phishing landscape.”

In conjunction with today’s funding news, IRONSCALES also announced that it has hired Matthew McNulty as SVP of Worldwide Sales. McNulty joins IRONSCALES as a seasoned sales, operations and finance expert, previously working as SVP of International Sales at security awareness training and simulated phishing platform KnowBe4.

“While we weren’t actively seeking capital, partnering with Jump was too good of an opportunity for us to pass up,” said Eyal Benishti, IRONSCALES founder and CEO. “With this Series B extension, and with Jump and McNulty on our team, we will be able to accelerate our marketplace momentum through investments in both people and technology, helping reduce the risk from what has become a global email phishing epidemic.”

Funding Builds on IRONSCALES 2020 Growth Momentum

Today’s news furthers what has already been a monumental year for IRONSCALES. Already in 2020, the email security leader has scaled its North American sales and marketing teams, expanded into new territories and unveiled a number of platform updates and new tools available to customers and partners.

IRONSCALES’ biggest 2020 announcements include:

  • An upgrade of Themis, IRONSCALES’ AI-driven virtual security analyst, which now has the ability to be fully autonomous in the classification and removal of email threats. With the tool, security analysts can now measurably increase the speed and accuracy of their email security through automated time-sensitive decisions on email threat mitigation.
  • The industry’s first Phishing Emulator™, a fully automated solution that enables security professionals to evaluate their organization’s email security defenses by relaunching real-world, unmodified phishing attacks built to bypass secure email gateways and authentication protocols.
  • The deployment of natural language processing, which uses advanced machine learning and neural networks, to automatically detect and respond to the most common types of business email compromise (BEC) attacks.
  • The launch of an in-app chat tool that encourages the sharing of phishing threat detection and open collaboration within security teams and amongst the global community of security analysts.

IRONSCALES helps where e-mail security hurts the most – in the inbox with post-message delivery, detection and remediation. Through a self-learning platform that provides for fast, easy and seamless collaboration, IRONSCALES puts its customers on offense, empowering them to defend against sophisticated email attack techniques automatically in a proactive and predictive manner. Using a democratized approach to threat intelligence sharing, IRONSCALES makes anti-phishing effortless and seamless for both security professionals and end users.

Accounting Today Names CPAmerica Member Firm Managing Partner Jackie Cardello to 2020 MP Elite

“I recognize the important role women play in leading teams, so I have consistently supported the firm’s efforts to identify future female leaders and mentor them into leadership positions in record numbers, “ Jackie Cardello said when asked what makes her stand out as a managing partner.

Accounting Today, the premier publication of the certified public accounting industry, has named CPAmerica member firm GRF CPAs & Advisors’ Jackie Cardello to the 2020 Managing Partner Elite list. Cardello is one of ten managing partners across the country to receive this prestigious recognition from Accounting Today.

“I recognize the important role women play in leading teams, so I have consistently supported the firm’s efforts to identify future female leaders and mentor them into leadership positions in record numbers, “ Jackie Cardello said when asked what makes her stand out as a managing partner. “Over the seven years I have served as managing partner, GRF has added 11 female leaders, but I’m not done. In 2019, the firm’s female leaders and I formalized the firm’s initiative to support women, Women on the Move. Perhaps even more important, the firm is focusing on diversity and inclusion. At a time when the industry is losing graduates with accounting degrees and seeing even fewer CPAs among people of color and other protected groups, GRF is posting some impressive results.”

Past CPAmerica members recognized as an Accounting Today MP Elite include:

  •     2012 MP Elite – David Graling, Gelman, Rosenberg & Freeman CPAs
  •     2015 MP Elite – Gregory Burbach, Honkamp Krueger & Co., P.C.
  •     2015 MP Elite – Michael Gillis, DMJ & Co., PLLC
  •     2017 MP Elite – Alton Miyashiro, N&K CPAs, Inc.
  •     2019 MP Elite – Seth McDaniel, Frazier & Deeter, LLC
