Our intimate understanding of both life sciences and real estate is our core advantage

Nan Fung Life Sciences Real Estate (NFLSRE) announced the opening of its first U.S. office and the appointment of Matthew Powers as Chief Executive Officer. Nan Fung Life Sciences Real Estate aims to acquire, develop and manage life sciences related properties in innovation-driven markets across the United States. Powers is establishing NFLSRE’s flagship office in Boston, Massachusetts for its economic and geographic status as a worldwide life sciences hub.

NFLSRE is a subsidiary of Nan Fung Group, a privately held Hong Kong based global conglomerate with core businesses in real estate development and investment. The Group’s real estate business is vertically integrated with investment, development and operating capabilities in Hong Kong, China, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Group also holds a well-diversified financial investment portfolio and has made significant investments in the life science sector globally through Nan Fung Life Sciences.

“We see this as an important next step in expanding Nan Fung’s footprint in Life Sciences,” said Vincent Cheung, Chairman of Nan Fung Life Sciences and COO of Nan Fung Group. “Nan Fung recognizes the unique real estate needs of the life sciences sector and this announcement highlights our commitment to providing best-in-class solutions to life sciences tenants.”

Nan Fung Life Sciences has $1.5 billion capital commitment from Nan Fung Group to invest into life sciences and has invested in 46 portfolio companies to date.

“Our intimate understanding of both life sciences and real estate is our core advantage as we develop solutions which accommodate the future needs and opportunities of our clients. The Nan Fung global network of business platforms offers unrivaled solutions to our clients across their entire business lifecycle.”

Greater Boston, with its prestigious research universities, elite hospitals, and globally competitive workforce, is the headquarters or operational center for hundreds of life sciences companies. From incubators and drug discovery and device startups to major company campuses, the need for innovative, scalable space is a top strategic priority. This ever-changing environment is a major reason why NFLSRE selected Boston for its headquarters.

Matthew Powers brings over 20 years of experience working for large biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in strategy, supply, operations and real estate positions. Prior to being named CEO of NFLSRE, he was Executive Vice President for JLL where he led the company’s New England Life Sciences practice.

Committed to Gender Parity, Liderança Group Unveils Their Newest Program, Aimed at Women in Technology

Cathy Light, CEO of Liderança Group

“As a Silicon Valley veteran, I’ve sat on both sides of the table, and my goal is to ensure women of every background have access to technical and leadership training that can place them firmly in the driver’s seat of their career.” – Cathy Light, CEO, Committed to Gender Parity, Liderança Group

A new study from the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence showcased a troubling statistic: The scales in Computer Science won’t be equal for women for another 100 years. In fact, the study recently put out by Cornell University, “Gender Trends in Computer Science Authorship,” believes that parity between the genders will not be reached in this century, and one global company is hoping to drive meaningful change in how women in Computer Science gain new skills.

From security to data to preparing for what’s next, evolving technologies are critical to the performance and success of a business, but often women are left on the sidelines. Liderança Group is committed to meaningful progress with its newest offering – Women in Tech. With over 3,000 course titles, 100 certification prep and learning paths, and 10,000-plus digital and audiobook summaries, it’s the most comprehensive resource on the market today.

Cathy Light, CEO of Liderança Group expressed her excitement of the program’s launch, saying, “Composers have their Opus, and those in business rarely get to make a lasting impact to pave the way for others; my goal is that our newest program changes the unequal power balance for women in the technology community.” Light continued, “As a Silicon Valley veteran, I’ve sat on both sides of the table, and my goal is to ensure women of every background have access to technical and leadership training that can place them firmly in the driver’s seat of their career.”

Aiming to eliminate the gap and offer women new ways to communicate, gain education and stay ahead of the curve in soft skills- crucial for developing effective leaders and communicators, this first of its kind program is now open for enrollment. Part online resource and part assessment tool, the coursework includes critical areas of high-impact continuous learning for IT professionals of all levels, including:

  • The Women in TECH Program provides learners with the knowledge and skills needed to excel at current and future project deliverables. To maximize the time dedicated to learning, sequenced lessons, and learning tools have been specially-built for busy technology professionals, all on their schedule.
  • The Women in LEADERSHIP Program provides quick, convenient access to learning content that promotes the development of leadership skills and addresses the unique challenges faced by women in business. Curated by industry veterans, content was selected to find the most important areas of development for women leaders across three levels of their career – leading the business, leading your team, and leading yourself. The program is comprised of 30 selected courses that included hundreds of videos, books, book summaries, and other resources for development.

Each module provides an abundance of multi-modal resources to prepare for certification exams, trouble-shoot on demand, or acquire new technical skills, all through a model of continual learning to bring the next century and parity between the genders, closer than ever before.

AI enterprise software startup, Sorcero, expands its leadership team and product expertise

Sorcero team

Sorcero team in DC office

Two experienced executives have joined Sorcero, a startup providing information and workflow management software to regulated enterprises. Aimee Gallagher and Sean Smith bring over forty years of experience to Sorcero’s product and market development teams. Gallagher has been hired as Sorcero’s Chief Product Officer, while Smith was promoted from Sorcero’s VP of Marketing to its Chief Marketing Officer. The additions make clear Sorcero’s commitment to growing a company with solutions that can scale to work with any enterprise.

Gallagher and Smith join a leadership team at Sorcero that includes Walter Bender and Dipanwita Das, founder and CEO of Sorcero. With a background in global development and technology consulting, Das is committed to building a no-code platform that can improve the way information and workflows are handled, distributed, and shared. Using domain-specific Natural Language Processing (NLP) as a foundation, Das and her team ensure that subject matter experts, not just technologists, can set up and deploy solutions to address critical business problems.

Walter Bender, Sorcero’s CTO, is the former director of the MIT Media Lab and Co-Founder of One Laptop Per Child. He is widely regarded as both one of the world’s leading technologists and an innovator in the educational community. By developing Sugar, a free software OS alternative to the Microsoft Windows & Office suite, Bender brought new opportunities to the world’s poorest children. He then went on to spread this ingenious platform through Sugar Labs. He discussed these accomplishments in a Ted Talk, which can be found here.

“The latest two appointments nicely round out our leadership team,” said Das. “One of the biggest concerns with AI solutions is their tendency to not have a quantifiable ROI and failing to scale beyond the pilot. Aimee and Sean will help us ensure that we don’t face that issue with our customers.”

Das called Gallagher a “perfect fit” as Sorcero’s CPO, noting that Gallagher managed and participated in a number of development teams, both local and virtual, in her more than twenty years in the field. Her experience includes working with prominent organizations such as Priceline, through their IPO, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where she negotiated multi-million dollar contracts and developed new products and businesses.

As Sorcero’s new CMO, Smith brings more than twenty years of experience working with enterprises. “Sean has been with Sorcero almost from the beginning,” Das said. “He’s a seasoned marketing and Business Development professional, a brilliant product strategist, and, over the past year and a half, has demonstrated a remarkable ability to roll up his sleeves and get the job done.”

Over the past twenty years, Smith has served in a number of different marketing and BD leadership roles in the fields of enterprise software and information services. His former employers include InfoDesk, Quosa, Elsevier Business Intelligence, and the Thompson Publishing Group. While working full-time, he earned an MS in marketing from the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business and an MS in journalism from Georgetown University.

Sorcero’s solutions let experts better manage the information they know best within enterprises, and the start-up is following that same principle with these hires: investing in a future guided by expertise.

About Sorcero

Sorcero’s Enterprise NLP suite provides prebuilt, configurable Natural Language Processing solutions to deliver scalable, automated advanced knowledge bases, decision support, and compliance for Life Sciences and Insurance. Built by senior MIT research scientists and informed by decades of experience in digital transformation, Sorcero’s platform provides cutting-edge capabilities to enhance the value chain across regulated and technical industries.

“Over the last two years as the North America Board Chair of the MMA, I am genuinely pleased with the accomplishments we’ve made as a team, particularly given the complexities and scale of some of the issues that we’ve tackled,” said outgoing Chair, Lou Paskalis, SVP Customer Engagement and Media Investment at Bank of America. “By engaging leaders from across the ecosystem including marketers, publishers & platforms, technologists and agencies, the MMA is uniquely positioned to create real and positive change by addressing the issues that matter most with greater depth and future-focused thinking. I truly believe that this forum is unrivalled when it comes to tackling the biggest opportunities and challenges the marketing industry faces today.”

Over the past three years, MMA has demonstrated this leadership on critical industry issues with the launch of the Marketing Attribution Think Tank (MATT) to support next-generation measurement as well as a Marketing Org Structure Think Tank (MOSTT) to re-envision the modern marketing organization. In addition, MMA has challenged the notion of time as an audience benchmark through the first neuroscience study of how the brain reacts to advertising in mobile and desktop environments; produces more than 20 marketer conferences annually around the world, including the globally recognized SMARTIES Awards; developed the first Business Impact Index which ranks companies driving the highest level of business impact through their marketing campaigns; and led initiatives to counter marketing fraud (Future of Mobile Fraud Council) and development of leading thinking around Brand Safety (SAVE).

About the MMA:

Comprised of over 800-member companies globally and 14 regional offices, the MMA is the only marketing trade association that brings together the full ecosystem of marketers, tech providers and sellers working collaboratively to architect the future of marketing, while relentlessly delivering growth today. Anchoring the MMA’s mission are four core pillars; to cultivate inspiration by driving innovation for the Chief Marketing Officer; to build the mobile marketing capabilities for marketing organizations through fostering know-how and confidence; to champion the effectiveness and impact of mobile through research providing tangible ROI measurement; and to advocate for mobile marketers.
