U.S. News & World Report Ranks FHU in Top 8 Best Value Schools in the South

FHU was also recognized as a Top Performer in Social Mobility, a designation given to schools which are more successful than others at enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students who have been awarded Pell Grants. The majority of Pell Grants go to students whose adjusted family incomes are less than $50,000 annually.

“I, too, received Pell Grants when I attended Freed-Hardeman,” FHU President David R. Shannon said in connection to the Top Performer in Social Mobility recognition. “It is in the DNA of this Christian university to meet students — all students — where they are and lift them toward their goals and dreams. This was the driving factor to develop FHU Promise. This scholarship makes FHU possible for economically disadvantaged students by paying the remainder of their tuition not covered by grants and loans. This makes the impossible possible for many Pell Grant recipients enrolled at FHU. Seeing students embrace this opportunity and graduate with a degree and a stronger walk with God is a success. Success isn’t measured or limited by household income.”

Buoyed by exceptional retention rates, FHU has logged for the sixth consecutive year a record-breaking total enrollment of 2,325. Fall 2022 to Fall 2023 retention was 88%, while Spring ’23 to Fall ’23 was even better, topping out at 91%. These numbers are approximately 10% better than national retention numbers. Provost and Vice President for Academics C.J. Vires credits the strong showing to a campus culture that makes students feel as if they belong and nurtures their growth.

FHU is currently engaged in a highly successful fundraising campaign dubbed FHU NEXT to improve facilities and programs at the university. It already has funded a renovation of Paul Gray Hall, a men’s residence hall, and Laurel Cottage, an on-campus hospitality house. Also, vast improvements have been made on intercollegiate athletic fields and facilities. The new dining hall, which will include a Chick-fil-A®, is expected to open Spring 2024. Renovation of a women’s dormitory, Hall-Roland Hall, is currently underway. Renewal of Loyd Auditorium is scheduled to begin next summer, as will the conversion of Gano Dining Hall into the Saunders Center to accommodate new academic programs.

U.S. News will also publish most of the rankings with robust datasets in the “Best Colleges 2023 Guidebook,” which will start shipping in late October.

The mission of Freed-Hardeman University is to help students develop their God-given talents for His glory by empowering them with an education that integrates Christian faith, scholarship and service. With locations in Henderson and Memphis, FHU offers associates, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees. More information is available at fhu.edu.

Three PECO Pallet Employees Honored by Supply & Demand Chain Executive in 4th Annual Women in Supply Chain Award Program

Elizabeth Gamez is Manager, Logistics for PECO’s North American distribution network. In this role, she leads a team tasked with the recovery of PECO’s signature red, 9-block pallets upon completion of rental contracts. She demonstrates servant leadership and promoting employee learning and development through programs like “walk a mile in my shoes” and driver ride-alongs. In one case, she worked with a PECO driver to help a difficult customer overcome resistance to timely return of pallets, mentoring the driver on conflict management, and ultimately securing the recovery of over 3,000 pallets. Gamez believes that leaders can fall into a trap by relying only on data to drive decisions, on-the-ground team input is critical as well. Particularly in the pallet business, you have to ‘go look, go see’ to get the full picture and lead the team in the correct direction, she adds.

Jennifer Oxley is Director, Regional Transportation. She is responsible for securing and directing transportation resources to deliver and pick up PECO pallets with customers. She recently added Canada to her responsibilities, expanding the role to include intra as well as cross-border Canada operations, driving efficiencies and helping the team handle 10% more transactions without adding staff. Other cost-saving initiatives she developed helped her region drive down trucking costs by 10 percent annually. She also led a Lean Silver project that improved the customer-facing web page and provided more accurate cost data that led to recovery of 45% more revenue from accessorial charges. Over a 12-year career she worked herself up from coordinator to her current management leadership role. She also serves as a mentor and facilitator to help women at PECO improve their skills and prepare for advancement.

Elizabeth Strub is Automation Engineer for PECO. Over the past three years her accomplishments have included deploying and commissioning capital automation projects at three facilities that have significantly improved operations efficiency and competitiveness. Her engineering expertise as well as her communications skills have led to successful engineering projects across multiple production systems. One project reduced maintenance complexity and errors in the paint system, reducing downtime and ensuring higher quality output. She has demonstrated a keen ability to learn operations and work collaboratively with colleagues to solve complex problems. That approach combined with her technical engineering expertise and focus on continuous improvement has won her the trust and respect of plant managers and operators as team player who finds solutions.

“These three professionals are exemplary examples of strong, respected women whose mentoring and servant leadership skills are improving our company and helping develop the next generation of PECO leaders,” said Joe Dagnese, PECO’s Chief Executive Officer. “They truly embrace our emphasis on encouraging fellow employees to continually improve and excel. This employee-led culture of inclusion and support is what sets apart PECO’s service value in the market.”

The Women in Supply Chain award honors female supply chain leaders and executives whose accomplishments, mentorship and examples set a foundation for women in all levels of a company’s supply chain network. This year’s list includes individuals from software and service providers, consultancies and academia, trucking and transportation firms, professional development agencies, sourcing and procurement divisions and more, all who have helped elevate and help prepare the supply chain community meet many of today’s—and tomorrow’s—challenges, explained Marina Mayer, Editor-in-Chief of Supply & Demand Chain Executive and Food Logistics.

“This year, we received over 400 submissions, the highest number of applications not only for this award, but also for all of our awards. What’s more, 118 of those applications were submitted by male counterparts, nominating their boss, co-worker or associate. This shows progress,” she noted, adding “the hope is that one day, we won’t need an award like this because men and women in the supply chain will be equal.”

“While there’s still more work to be done, what we’re doing is working. From truck drivers to CEOs, what these winners are doing matters to the future of all supply chains,” Mayer concluded.

Go to https://foodl.me/fdx1zi to view the full list of winners. Recipients will be honored at this year’s Women in Supply Chain Forum, set to take place Nov. 14-15, 2023 in Atlanta. Go to http://www.WomenInSupplyChainForum.com to register and learn more.

OneSource Virtual Launches myFlexWallet, a Comprehensive Digital Wallet for Employee Financial Well-Being

It also integrates OSV’s myFlexSpend to further enhance the new app’s capabilities and create a truly unified experience for employees by allowing them to view and manage their consumer-directed health accounts side by side with these other solutions. More features are planned for the app as well.

“Digital, on-demand finance services are reshaping employee expectations around wage access and financial well-being benefits,” said Michael Roseman, OSV’s chief operating officer. “myFlexWallet will help businesses meet those evolving needs and expectations. Employees get more flexibility and control over their finances while employers gain a valuable tool for recruitment and retention.”

“myFlexWallet is more than another digital wallet,” added Valerie Van Gorp, vice president of Customer Operations for OSV. “For many employees, it will give them more freedom and control over how and when they access their wages than they’ve ever had before. It can also help them reduce or eliminate late payment fees for bills, while unbanked or underbanked employees can gain access to banking features they may not have had access to before.”

Research from BrightPlan shows that financial stress can negatively impact productivity and engagement, costing companies an estimated $200 billion each year. myFlexWallet aims to reduce that stress to produce benefits for employers as well as employees.

Already, companies are making gains in those areas with myFlexPay, another OSV payroll solution. Companies offering myFlexPay have seen an 11% increase in hours worked by employees and a 16% reduction in turnover. And of those employees who have used myFlexPay, 90% say their financial situation has improved. Since 2021, OSV has distributed nearly $100 million in earned wages for Workday customers through myFlexPay.

“[Earned wage access] is a great benefit to an employee,” said Jill Palmer, payroll specialist for Purple, about OSV’s myFlexPay solution. “They’re in control of their own money and they can access it right away if they need it. We’ve seen a lot of our people use it for different reasons. And as the employer, we don’t have to think anything about it.”

myFlexWallet builds on the promise of these capabilities by giving users a single hub for accessing all of OSV’s employee-focused payroll and benefits solutions. With the complete solution, myFlexWallet will be a powerful addition to any company’s financial well-being offerings for its ability to empower employees at all levels of an organization.

“myFlexWallet has the potential to make a huge difference for employees, regardless of their role or their access to traditional banking solutions,” added Michael Roseman. “And with the adoption of digital wallets expected to spike in the next few years, we’re excited to be at the forefront of delivering such an empowering tool.”

Texas School is LPA Design Studios’ 200th LEED Certified Project

LPA also has made LEED a core part of its own workplace design: All of LPA’s six studios in California and Texas are either LEED Platinum or LEED Gold.

“We’ve always believed that sustainable design is simply good design,” said LPA President and Chief Design Officer Keith Hempel. “We’ve had the good fortune of working with clients who share that mission and understand the value of meeting the LEED standards.”

Launched in 2000 by the USGBC, LEED — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — is the world’s most widely adopted sustainable design rating system, providing a framework for healthy, efficient, carbon-reducing green buildings. To achieve certification, a project earns points by adhering to prerequisites and credits that address location and transportation, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.

LPA designed several LEED landmark buildings, including the first LEED-NC building in the country, the Premier Automotive Group headquarters in 1998. An expansion of Toyota’s corporate headquarters in 2003 was the largest LEED-Gold office campus in the country at the time. The first LEED Platinum project in Orange County was the LPA-designed, net-zero-energy Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. Among a wide range of projects, LPA also designed NASA’s first LEED-Gold facility, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Flight Projects Center.

“LEED made us integrate faster,” said LPA Principal Dan Heinfeld. “It helped us understand that we needed to bring in mechanical, civil and structural engineers if we were going to create these highly sustainable, high-performance buildings. We couldn’t continue to practice the way we had for 25 years.”

LPA’s 200th LEED project, the 90,000-square-foot Sheffield Elementary, is the first LEED-certified school built by Carrolton-Farmer’s Branch Independent School District. The design prioritizes human health and energy efficiency. Careful siting and high-efficiency mechanical and lighting systems helped slash energy consumption by 78%. Low-VOC (volatile organic compound) materials foster superior air quality; spaces are filled with natural light and learning courtyards are easily accessible from classrooms.

Sheffield is an excellent example of using LEED as a guideline to create a healthier, more resilient campus,” said LPA Director of Sustainability and Applied Research Ellen Mitchell. “We’re seeing more and more of our Texas clients recognizing the value of sustainable design as good business.”

OSNexus Announces Auto-Configuration of Seagate® Exos® CORVAULT™ Systems

Seagate’s Exos CORVAULT is a fully configured, self-healing, direct-attached storage array which combines Seagate’s highest capacity enterprise disk drives with Seagate’s ADAPT and Autonomous Drive Regeneration (ADR) data protection and self-healing technologies. The CORVAULT system presents logical disk groups instead of physical disks to the QuantaStor software and also implements hardware-based erasure coding data protection, which reduces the server CPU resources needed to run QuantaStor by 50% as compared with using JBODs.

QuantaStor uses the CORVAULT’s built-in VelosCT™ ASIC-based ADAPT erasure coding to enable faster system performance and simplified maintenance with faster drive rebuilds within each CORVAULT storage array, eliminating east/west network disk rebuild traffic resulting in less backend system pressure. QuantaStor implements a second layer of erasure coding between CORVAULT systems, significantly increasing system data durability up to 14 9’s.

“Integration and automation of the Seagate Exos CORVAULT systems provides a unique solution to scaling with two-layers of erasure-coding and this is key to enabling customers to deploy clusters in the 100PB-200PB and beyond as Seagate continues to increase per platter densities,” said Steven Umbehocker, CEO of OSNexus. “With this release we’ve expanded our Seagate Exos CORVAULT integration by adding easy one-click auto-configuration via pre-set profiles which will greatly accelerate deployment times and provide greater consistency.”

QuantaStor’s management and auto-configuration of Seagate CORVAULT units covers the entire line from the 4U106 based Corvault to the new 5U84 Corvault that fits within standard rack depth.
