“There is no one who better exemplifies the commitment, the energy, the insight and the extraordinary persistence needed for devoting one’s life to making life better for elders,” said Dr. Bill Thomas, founder of the Eden Alternative and a Nexus Insights Fellow.

Bob Kramer, one of senior living’s most influential and high-profile thought leaders, has been chosen to receive the 2023 Career Achievement Award as part of the inaugural McKnight’s Pinnacle Awards. The Pinnacle Awards were created to recognize industry veterans who are leading the charge and inspiring change in the fields of senior living, senior care and skilled nursing.
Kramer is the founder of Nexus Insights, a think tank dedicated to advancing the well-being of older adults through innovative models of housing, community and healthcare.
“There is no one who better exemplifies the commitment, the energy, the insight and the extraordinary persistence needed for devoting one’s life to making life better for elders,” said Dr. Bill Thomas, founder of the Eden Alternative and a Nexus Insights Fellow. “If pinnacles got awards, they would be called ‘Bob Kramers’. So much can be said about what Bob has done but — I am most excited about what he has yet to do. His work with Nexus raises the pinnacle to a new level and I see no limit on how high this work can go.”
Bob Kramer has spent over 40 years improving the lives of the aging and those who care for them. In 1991, he co-founded NIC, The National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care, a 501(c)(3) organization created to bring private sector investors to the table through education, data and analytics.
“This career award is incredibly fitting for Bob Kramer. He is clearly one of the giants of our field,” said current NIC President and CEO Ray Braun, a former president of Health Care REIT (now Welltower), in an interview with McKnight’s. “We are indebted to Bob for his vision for NIC and his industry leadership. He has impacted thousands. I’m glad to have known him for so many years, and worked beside him, first as an NIC board member and then board chair.”
Kramer has earned the reputation of “agent provocateur” for identifying industries and sometimes-uncomfortable trends that will disrupt the future of seniors housing, aging services, and aging more broadly.
“Bob has been both an innovator and change agent throughout his life: as a state legislator, co-founder and CEO of NIC and, now, as founder and fellow of Nexus Insights,” says Ryan Frederick, Founder & CEO of Here. “He has the rare combination of strategic vision and know-how that has made senior living immeasurably better today and into the future.”
Kramer’s latest self-funded venture, Nexus Insights, comes from his heart and is a way to give back to an industry that has been so good to him. He wants to inspire the next generation of leaders in the seniors housing and aging services space.
“Nexus Insights will help our society to reframe how we think about aging, to address the implicit and explicit ageism prevalent in our culture, and to change what our expectations are for aging, and the very experience of aging,” said Kramer. “In addition and most importantly, Nexus Insights will provide actionable, sustainable and measurable models that can really work.”
The McKnight’s Pinnacle Awards ceremony and dinner will be held March 7, 2023, at the Ivy Room in Chicago.
