Board Certified Autism Professional (BCAP) certification program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)

The Behavioral Intervention Certification Council (BICC), an independent non-profit promoting the highest standards of treatment for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), announced today that the Board Certified Autism Professional (BCAP), a graduate-level, autism-specific certification program for master’s and doctoral-level professionals, has earned accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

“BICC was founded to provide autism-specific certifications that require candidates to pass nationally recognized exams and submit to ongoing, rigorous background checks,” said BICC Executive Director Janelle Lawrence. “This accreditation demonstrates that our programs have significantly conformed to the exacting standards of the NCCA.”

NCCA was established in 1987 to help ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the public. NCCA accreditation for certification programs provides impartial, third-party validation that the program has met recognized national and international credentialing industry standards for development, implementation, and maintenance of certification programs.

With this NCCA accreditation, BICC now has two certification programs recognized by national and international credentialing industry standards for high-quality and commitment to excellence. BICC also offers the Board Certified Autism Technician (BCAT) certification program, the only autism-specific behavioral technician certification accredited by the NCCA. BCAP and BCAT are the only autism-specific certifications accredited by NCCA.

BICC certification programs are specific to ASD. This sets it apart from other generalist certifications that cover a wide range of behavioral disorders such as anxiety, depression, ADHD and eating disorders.

“We recognize the vast difference between autism and other behavioral disorders and tailor our certification programs to these unique needs,” Lawrence said. “Families impacted by ASD also realize this and are looking for specialized and qualified caregivers to help them. That’s why BICC works to enhance public protection by developing and administering a certification program consistent with the needs of behavior analysts to recognize individuals who are qualified to treat the deficits and behaviors associated with ASD.”
