Structure House utilizes a holistic approach that integrates behavioral skills training, nutritional expertise and fitness conditioning in a healing and supportive environment to achieve lasting results. Since 1977, Structure House has built the foundation for healthy living, sustainable weight management and recovery from emotional overeating for more than forty-thousand people. Recognizing that many people may need weight loss to improve their health and physical functioning, Structure House provides evidence-based, healthy behavioral weight management. Their customized weight management services help guests embrace their strengths, heal their bodies and create lasting, positive change. The ultimate goal of the program is to help people live the life they most want to live. Structure House is located on twelve beautiful acres of land in Durham, North Carolina. Rickel says that Structure House is very different than other weight loss programs. She explains, “Most weight loss programs focus almost exclusively on what not to eat and how much to exercise. What we’ve learned is that that’s really an oversimplification of a pretty complex issue. And that’s where Structure House is really a game changer for people. For the first time, they’re looking at their life more globally and seeing what patterns or dynamics may be making it difficult, if not impossible, to lose weight and keep it off.”

Study Shows Link Between Conversion Therapy and Transgender Suicide Attempts

What this new study shows is that transgender people who are exposed to conversion efforts anytime in their lives have more than double the odds of attempting suicide….

A new study published today in JAMA Psychiatry found that exposure to attempts by professionals to change a person’s gender identity from transgender to cisgender is associated with a range of adverse mental health outcomes, including suicide attempts. The study was authored by researchers at The Fenway Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School), and McLean Hospital (Harvard Medical School) and is believed to be the first to show an association between exposure to gender identity conversion efforts and adverse mental health outcomes among transgender adults in the United States. The study also builds on previous work published last month by the same researchers documenting the widespread prevalence (13.5%) among the U.S. transgender population of having experienced gender identity conversion efforts by therapists, counselors, and religious advisors.

“The rate of previous suicide attempts among transgender people in the United States is extremely high, with 41 percent reporting that they have had that experience, ” said Dr. Alex Keuroghlian, senior author of the study who directs the National LGBT Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute and the Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry Gender Identity Program. “What this new study shows is that transgender people who are exposed to conversion efforts anytime in their lives have more than double the odds of attempting suicide compared with those who have never experienced efforts by professionals to convert their gender identity from transgender to cisgender.”

Findings from the study titled “Association Between Recalled Exposure to Gender Identity Conversion Efforts and Suicide Attempts” support recommendations by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the American Academy of Pediatrics advising mental health care providers that gender identity conversion efforts at any age are harmful.

Lifetime exposure to gender identity conversion efforts was associated with a broad range of adverse mental health outcomes, including suicidal ideation in the previous 12 months and severe psychological distress in the previous month. Additionally, associations with adverse mental health outcomes held true whether the person conducting the conversion efforts was a secular therapist or a religious advisor.

“One of the most alarming findings from this study was the association between exposure to gender identity conversion efforts during childhood and a four-fold increased odds of lifetime suicide attempts,” said Dr. Jack Turban, resident physician in psychiatry at The Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital and lead author of the study. “This is important because some experts continue to advocate for gender identity conversion efforts for young children. We hope our findings contribute to ongoing legislative efforts to ban gender identity conversion efforts.”

The study uses data from the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality and includes responses from over 27,000 transgender people in the U.S. Its publication comes one month after The American Journal of Public Health published “Psychological Attempts to Change a Person’s Gender Identity From Transgender to Cisgender: Estimated Prevalence Across US States, 2015” showing that nearly 200,000 transgender people representing every U.S. state have been exposed to gender identity conversion efforts.

PatientPay Announces New Patent for ‘Instant Integration for Installment Payments’ for Its Patient Payment Solution

https://www.prweb.com/

PatientPay Mobile Solution

“PatientPay’s patented integration capability is the latest example of our commitment to bring the healthcare transaction cost down by leveraging automation through the existing healthcare payment infrastructure.”

PatientPay, the leading end-to-end patient payment solution focused on the complex financial challenges facing specialty healthcare, announces the issuance of a patent to reduce the level of effort a medical group must perform to set up an integrated payment plan for both time-of-service and post visit patient statements.

At the core of “Instant Integration for Installment Payments” is US Patent No. 10,410,187, a business process that enables a quick, easy and reliable connection with any currently available medical group billing system. The process was developed and patented by PatientPay and is recognized as a significant advancement in the automation of healthcare practices in the United States. This patent is in addition to PatientPay’s three other patents 8,155,983, 8,204,764 and 8,214,233.

The Medical Group Management Association reports that the typical medical group sends, on average, 3.3 paper statements before payment is secured. PatientPay reduces the number of paper statements required to capture patient payments by providing electronic bills via text and email online. According to Cain Brothers, “Only 17 percent of consumers receive a medical bill electronically, despite over 70% preferring electronic statements.” This number is expected to grow with the ongoing increase in USPS postage rates.

“PatientPay’s patented integration capability is the latest example of our commitment to bring the healthcare transaction cost down by leveraging automation through the existing healthcare payment infrastructure,” said Tom Furr, PatientPay’s CEO. “With this technology we are eliminating the cost of manual back-end processing that’s required by other patient payment vendors.”

PatientPay is pleased to offer medical group billing vendors and revenue cycle management companies’ virtually instant access to our cost-effective service for their clients. PatientPay permits seamless patient payment data posting and offers a better payment experience for patients.

New Version of STRmix Features Improvements in Resolving Profiles, Input Quality Checks

The latest version of STRmix™ – the sophisticated forensic software used to resolve mixed DNA profiles previously considered too complex to interpret – has been launched.

STRmix™ v2.7 builds on previous versions of STRmix™, while adding several key new features. These include the addition of a variable number of contributors (varNOC) for multi-kits and the ability to compare two or more DNA mixtures to find a common contributor.

“The new features that have been incorporated into STRmix™ v2.7 are in direct response to recommendations for improvements made by forensic labs to better address the on-the-job needs they regularly encounter,” says John Buckleton DSc, FRSNZ, Forensic Scientist at the New Zealand Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR).

Dr. Buckleton and fellow ESR scientist Dr. Jo-Anne Bright developed STRmix™ in collaboration with Dr. Duncan Taylor from Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA).

Other improvements offered by STRmix™ v2.7 include:

  •     The ability to vary the number of contributors in Hp and Hd in a varNOC run;
  •     The addition of quality checks to input files;
  •     Improved models for composite peaks; and
  •     Improved Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) models for sampling from a probability distribution.

The latest version of STRmix™ comes after a full year of technical development and testing.

Since its introduction in 2012, STRmix™ has been used to interpret DNA evidence in more than 100,000 cases around the world. It is currently being used by the forensic labs at 46 U.S. agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and is in various stages of installation, validation, and training in another 60 U.S. labs.

“Forensic labs increasingly are turning to STRmix™ because it has greatly improved the usability of DNA to produce evidence in a wide range of criminal cases,” Dr. Buckleton explains. He notes that agencies using STRmix™ are reporting an increase of interpretable DNA in gun cases from about 40% to more than 70%. STRmix™ is also proving to be highly effective in delivering a significantly higher rate of interpretable results in sexual assault cases.

The previous update of STRmix™, issued in August 2018, featured a completely redeveloped and refreshed user interface which vastly improved usability and workflow. STRmix™ v2.6 also enabled a range of contributors to be entered when performing a deconvolution, while improving various aspects of the biological modelling.

The previous year, STRmix™ v2.5 was issued. That version included numerous features designed to significantly improve functionality, speed, and ease of use.

DBLR™, an application for calculating millions of likelihood ratios in seconds when used in conjunction with STRmix™, was introduced earlier this year. Likelihood ratios are used to assess the strength of DNA evidence and how likely it is that DNA found at a crime scene belongs to specific individuals.

ZRT Laboratory Receives NIH Grant Award to Help Understand ADHD

“I am so excited and honored to receive this grant” announced Dr. Placzek; “ZRT has been working with academic and government researchers for years, and now we have our own funding to pursue a project that may help families of children with ADHD identify for whom a treatment works and why.”

ZRT Laboratory, a CLIA-certified diagnostic laboratory, announced today the receipt of a Phase I grant from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health under the auspices of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Institutes of Health. Principal investigators Kate Placzek, PhD, Senior Research Scientist and David Zava, PhD, CEO of ZRT Laboratory will head up a 6-month study to research Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in young people. “I am so excited and honored to receive this grant,” announced Dr. Placzek. “ZRT has been working with academic and government researchers for years, and now we have our own funding to pursue a project that may help families of children with ADHD identify for whom a treatment works and why.”

ZRT’s goal for this study is to develop a test that can be used alongside existing questionnaires to help doctors create personalized treatment strategies for their patients with ADHD. With this grant, ZRT Laboratory is putting efforts toward identifying a set of endocrine biomarkers that can reliably identify children who may benefit from a particular type of treatment.

At the heart of the concept is a simple, minimally-invasive collection of small amounts of blood from a finger stick. “The beauty of this technology,” said Dr. Zava, who pioneered minimally invasive dried blood spot hormone testing, “is that it can be done at home by the patient and minimize the stress associated with invasive venous blood draws. This is especially important in pediatric diagnostics.”

Drs. Zava and Placzek will collaborate with Jeanette Johnstone, PhD in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, who is currently leading the ongoing “Micronutrients for ADHD in Youth” (MADDY) clinical trial, designed to evaluate micronutrients as alternative treatment strategies to stimulant medications.

Stimulant medications, typically effective as a first-line treatment for ADHD, may not manage symptoms in some patients. “Our laboratory test will aim to help us understand why that happens and hopefully will be used to provide adequate prediction of treatment success and behavior improvements. We hope that clinically relevant endocrine changes seen in blood spot tests that are specific to ADHD, will provide additional insight into optimal patient management,” said Dr. Placzek.

To learn more about ZRT Laboratory’s research projects, visit ZRT’s research page. To learn more about our SBIR Phase 1 Grant, you can search by reference number 1R43AT010884-01 on NIH.gov.

ZRT Laboratory is a CLIA-certified commercial and research laboratory founded in 1998 by breast cancer researcher David Zava, Ph.D. ZRT has pioneered innovative testing methods for hormones, neurotransmitters, heavy metals and more, offering health care professionals convenient testing options in different body fluids including saliva, dried blood spot, dried urine, and serum. With over 10 million clinical tests performed over the past 20+ years, coupled with our signature personalized test report, ZRT Laboratory has become a world recognized leader in clinical testing. Individuals, health care providers in all 50 states and in over 100 countries, as well as research-oriented government, private, and academic organizations worldwide use our testing. Jack Weitzel’s Newly Released “Looking for My Sister” is a Touching Memoir of Faith and Trust Amid Times of Great Tribulation in Life

News Image

“Looking for My Sister”: a heart-touching narrative that serves as a reminder of humanity’s determination to surpass life’s capricious challenges. “Looking for My Sister” is the creation of published author, Jack Weitzel, a retired general surgeon, a founding trustee of Evangelical College and Seminary, a professor of Science and the Bible, a born-again Christian, and a cancer survivor.

Weitzel shares, “This book reminds us of how resilient the human spirit is. Its main characters live, love, and achieve in the ebb and flow of their lives, encountering slights and setbacks, but questing, overcoming, and thriving, to be suddenly stunned—flattened!—by true tragedy. This story explores what happens to people like you and me when we are frightened and vulnerable, staring into the unblinking eyes of terrible fate. It can be difficult to read—we are almost overwhelmed, wanting to cry out, ‘Oh no!’ and flee in terror. Yet, forging on, we are relieved to find fictional friends offering their much-needed support. Then, to our rising joy, the bedrock which keeps us from sinking appears—a robust Christian faith! Trust in our God, and His abundant love provides solace, hope, and guidance, along with unexpected reserves of strength. Cuffed to the ground, both characters and reader arise, regain their footing, and face the changed future with dignity and renewed courage. As the story ends, we forgive the author for forcing us to peer so deeply into the pit and thank him for allowing us to bask in the warm glow of divine love revealed. We are moved to prayer.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Jack Weitzel’s new book reveals the hidden strength individuals possess throughout their lives as they strive to overcome the obstacles that hinder their progress toward enlightenment and the fulfillment of their life’s purpose.

National Cyber League Announces Official Cybersecurity College Rankings Based on Record Participation in NCL Spring Season

News Image

Cyber competitions like NCL provide a way for cybersecurity students to demonstrate their skills to employers, especially with many entry-level jobs requiring experience.

University of Nevada-Reno Students Prevailed Against 5,026 Students and 419 Schools.

Students from the University of Nevada – Reno prevailed against 5,026 students from 419 schools across the nation recognized as the top school in the nation during the National Cyber League (NCL) Spring 2019 season. This contributed to the inaugural college cybersecurity rankings by Cyber Skyline and NCL. View the entire Power Ranking list here: https://cyberskyline.com/data/power-ranking/.

NCL is a biannual cybersecurity competition for high school and college students. The competition consists of a series of challenges that allows students to demonstrate their ability to identify hackers from forensic data, break into vulnerable websites, recover from ransomware attacks, and more. Students compete in the NCL to build their skills, obtain scouting reports of their performance for hiring purposes, and to represent their school.

This is the first season that NCL and Cyber Skyline have designated official college rankings based on a record number of participation in the NCL Spring Season from individual students and schools.

  • Record participation from California with 1,165 Students
  • Followed by participation from Maryland with 483 students and Virginia with 478 students
  • NCL has seen participation from all 50 states and Puerto Rico

Students participated in a weeklong placement game followed by a weekend individual game, and culminated with a weekend team game. At the end of the competition, students received Scouting Reports that identified their strengths and weaknesses within different cybersecurity domains. Students use these reports in their resumes to validate their growth and skills in cybersecurity. The biannual competition is designed to help prepare students for relevant cybersecurity roles by aligning to industry certifications and government standards.

“We’re playing a full-on college cybersecurity sport. We are evidence-based, and we’re finally able to measure talent based on individual, team, and school’s performance,” said Dan Manson, NCL commissioner.

The University of Nevada — Reno faced fierce competition from schools such as the University of Hawaii at Manoa, California State University – Chico, New York University, the University of California – Davis, Texas A&M, and more than half the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security’s jointly designated cybersecurity Centers of Academic Excellence.

This spring, students from west coast schools topped the leaderboard with the University of Nevada — Reno, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and California State University — Chico placing first, second and third place, respectively. On the east coast, the top performing school was New York University while Wichita State University topped the central region.

“Demand for cybersecurity professionals has skyrocketed in the past several years.
