Screen the kids regularly, detect lice and nits early and remove them.
NEW YORK, Sept. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — September is National Head Lice Prevention Month. The campaign aims to remind parents to screen the kids regularly, detect lice and nits early and remove them. Just like hand washing, combing children for head lice is a basic hygiene measure. Thorough removal of lice and nits provides a reliable approach for parents and accomplishes what shampooing with potentially risky chemicals cannot. Combing enables families to be self-reliant and proactive. The US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) educational information includes combing as a complete non-chemical treatment method for pediculosis.
The NPA thanks all who join in the 2024 campaign with a positive message to last the whole year long. Emphasize community cooperation and trust that parents will accept their role in safely and effectively returning their children to the group setting free of lice and nits (lice eggs). “Because it’s not about lice, it’s about kids.”

One of SQUARY’s standout features is its ability to pinpoint answers found within multimedia files. It extracts information from web pages, documents, webinars and podcasts. SQUARY also integrates with providers such as YouTube and Spotify, providing timestamps that save users the hassle of scrolling to find what they need.
“Adding SQUARY to East Ohio Regional Hospital represents a significant step forward in health care communication, allowing it to offer 24/7 support to patients and visitors seeking information online,” said Cognistx CEO Sanjay Chopra.
The adoption of SQUARY by EORH will do the following:
Improve patient engagement and satisfaction
Reduce wait times for information
Provide quick access to hospital services, departments and general health information
Decrease the workload on hospital staff by handling routine inquiries
“Implementing an AI tool on our website aligns with our commitment to leveraging innovative technology to enhance patient care and communication. We’re confident SQUARY will significantly improve our ability to serve our community efficiently,” said Bernie Albertini, administrator and chief operating officer of EORH. “We’re eager for people to use it and tell us about their experience.”
User feedback is essential for SQUARY’s success. With Cognistx’s AI web assistant, each interaction contributes to its enhancement. Website users play a vital role in SQUARY’s continuous improvement by simply providing a quick thumbs-up or thumbs-down response.
EORH is among a growing number of businesses that embrace SQUARY. Cybersecurity providers, home remodeling and natural resources management companies are just a few of the many businesses that feature Cognistx’s AI chatbot on their websites. You can also see it in action at Cognistx.com.
Adding SQUARY to any website is remarkably simple. Cognistx can seamlessly integrate it onto most company websites within two weeks. That includes adding customizations to incorporate a company’s logo, branding and voice and searching multimedia files such as YouTube videos, webinars and podcasts.
SQUARY stands out not only for its innovative features but also for its affordability. While many companies hesitate to embrace AI tools due to budget constraints, SQUARY offers a cost-effective solution. Depending on the website’s size and level of customization, the price can start at just a few hundred dollars per month.
An AI website chatbot like SQUARY is an accessible tool that delivers quick results. It understands context, learns from interactions and gives real-time personalized responses. Old-school website chatbots, however, are inflexible and depend on keyword matching with set responses, requiring regular maintenance.
“SQUARY and AI web chatbots serve as knowledgeable assistants that become increasingly intelligent with each interaction. Your customers will appreciate and feel relieved to communicate with a chatbot that truly understands their needs,” said Chopra.
SQUARY is the newest AI-driven tool from Cognistx, crafted to enhance workplace and customer experiences. In 2023, the company introduced SQUARE, an AI-powered search engine designed to streamline business operations. This tool enables organizations to search for information within their document ecosystem, providing accurate, verified answers.

“Swimming is what kept me centered and grounded throughout my battle with CLL,” Julia shared. “This swim wasn’t just about completing a historic challenge, but about celebrating life, health, and the incredible support I’ve received from my family, friends and Swim Across America.” Julia also used the fundraising aspect of her swim as an opportunity to tell family and friends about her cancer battle, which she had kept private while undergoing treatment so as not to upset the life of her two sons – and she still swam every morning before her treatment at her local Y and supported Swim Across America running the safety for 24 open water swims across the country.
Julia’s inspiration to join Swim Across America came from a simple encounter: a backpack with the nonprofit’s logo seen at her local pool in 2019. Since then, she has been deeply involved with the organization, first as a volunteer and recently leaving her career in pharmaceutical sales to join the organization full time as the national safety director. Her story of resilience and passion has touched many, including Jorgensen McArdle, who not only is her colleague, but also her friend, and was honored to join Julia for this remarkable endeavor.
“It’s been an honor to swim alongside Julia and witness her incredible journey,” said Janel Jorgensen McArdle. “Sadly, cancer touches too many; seeing Julia’s determination and spirit to celebrate her recovery is truly inspiring. This swim is a testament to the strength and courage that defines her.”
“It’s been said that you can’t call yourself a true open water swimmer until you’ve completed this historic cross-continental swim from Europe to Asia in Turkey,” noted Julia, quoting SwimTrek, the organization that runs the Hellespont and Dardanelles swim. “This swim for me was about so much more than reaching the other side. It’s about hope, resilience, and the power of coming together to fight cancer.”
Thanks to a partnership between Swim Across America and SwimTrek, Julia and Janel were awarded an entry into the Hellespont and Dardanelles Swim, which traces its history back to Greek mythology as the strait that Leander swam across to reach his lover Hero. It was officially swum for the first time by the famous poet Lord Byron in 1810, and ever since it has been considered the absolute epitome of open water swimming and can often be found at the top of any avid open water swimmer’s international wish list. The swim takes place annually on August 30, Turkish Victory Day, which commemorates the end of the Turkish War of Independence. The swim starts in Eceabat on the European side of Turkey and ends in Canakkale on the Asian side. The swim is known for being challenging, with a strong current that can pull swimmers too far from their destination.
Swim Across America is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, that offers open water and pool swims in 24 communities, from Boston to under the Golden Gate Bridge. Founded in 1987, Swim Across America has raised more than $100 million in the fight against cancer and funded groundbreaking research and clinical trials. The organization’s support has been instrumental in developing FDA-approved cancer treatments, including Keytruda, Opdivo, Yervoy and Tecentriq, and funding innovative trials, including a clinical trial for advanced rectal cancer that showed a 100% success rate.
More than 150 Olympians support Swim Across America, including Kate Douglass, Michael Phelps, Missy Franklin, Ryan Lochte, and many others who share Julia and Janel’s commitment to making waves in the fight against cancer.

The grant allows Operation Pathways to expand their drop-in youth programming for 30 children and families at Bayview Towers. The expanded program will include a series of formal maker and computer science (CS) activities that are personally meaningful, culturally relevant, and support youth development, as well as academic support. Programming will begin in Fall 2024 and will culminate in a makerspace showcase where the youth will showcase their work to family, friends, and the local community.
The recent National Educational Technology Plan called for closing the Digital Access, Design and Use Divides. As noted in the report, there is a gap between students who are “asked to use technology for creation, exploration, and critical analysis and those who are not – often students from historically marginalized backgrounds”. However, utilizing the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, pioneered by our partner CAST, supports an inclusive and equitable education environment for all learners.
Makerspaces provide an additional layer of social and emotional learning, essential for individuals to thrive professionally. According to Dell Technologies and the Institute for the Future, 85% of the jobs that will exist in 2030 have not yet been invented. “Operations Pathways’ expanded makerspace youth programming aligns strongly with Infosys Foundation USA’s mission to engage underserved youth in inclusive computer science and maker education,” says Kate Maloney, Executive Director of Infosys Foundation USA. “Establishing a makerspace within an affordable housing community not only gives historically marginalized groups access to the technologies, digital skills, and experiences needed to shape the future; but, also inspires them to address critical community challenges and explore careers in computer science and STEM fields more broadly.”
“Universally designed makerspaces provide a range of ways to engage and provide lots of onramps and then opportunities to extend into more complex making. Co-designing an onsite makerspace with residents is a great way to ensure the maker movement draws on the talents of many and there is so much creativity within the Bayview community” Sam Johnston, CAST’s Chief Postsecondary and Workforce Development Officer.
The after-school youth program at the Bayview Towers Makerspace will leverage specific resources and courses from Infosys Foundation USA’s Pathfinders Online Institute, along with additional resources from other Foundation grantees and partners where relevant. Operation Pathways supports affordable housing residents in 20+ communities and, in collaboration with CAST and MakerUSA, plans to develop makerspaces and maker education programming in several additional communities, including Houston, Washington D.C., and New Orleans. The after-school programming developed through this grant could serve as a blueprint and model for these other affordable communities to use.
Beyond the broader benefits affordable housing creates within a community, the expanded youth program and homework support at Bayview will encourage residents to feel welcomed into the broader STEM community and Connecticut’s economic development landscape. Underrepresentation of low-income communities is often attributed to identity gaps. With this exposure, residents will build STEM identities and be more likely to pursue careers in STEM.
Colin Lacy, Co-Founder and CEO of MakerUSA explains, “Integrating makerspaces into affordable housing communities can increase interest and engagement in science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, contributing to better access and success in STEM education and careers. This is an important step towards increasing social mobility and economic opportunity.”
About Operation Pathways Operation Pathways (OP) is changing the face of affordable housing. A subsidiary of The NHP Foundation, OP provides resident centered, innovative coaching within affordable housing communities, which residents choose to use to live their most successful and fulfilling lives through improved financial, health, educational and aging outcomes. Operation Pathways’ services expand resident opportunities and demonstrably improve life outcomes for adults and children, allow seniors to age in place, and provide a financial benefit for property owners and management.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — American Forests, the oldest national conservation organization in the US, announced they are distributing over $25 million in grants from to 36 communities for equitable urban and community forestry projects via its Tree Equity Catalyst Fund. The funding, a portion of $50 million received from the USDA Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry Program as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA), will help bring the many benefits of trees and urban greening to communities across the country, especially those that have been historically disadvantaged. These investments are critical — according to American Forests’ renowned Tree Equity Score, lower-income communities tend to have 26% less tree cover and are almost 6°F hotter than wealthier ones. Communities of color – regardless of income – tend to have 38% less tree cover and are 13°F hotter than white communities.
“This first round of Catalyst Fund grants comes just after another summer of record temperatures felt across the country,” said Jad Daley, President and Chief Executive Officer at American Forests. “Extreme heat is killing more people in the U.S. than any other type of severe weather and Tree Equity presents a practical solution to address it. We are excited to work alongside these community leaders to provide much needed cooling relief and climate justice to some of our most vulnerable populations through critical tree infrastructure.”
Over the past five years, American Forests has led and mobilized a nationwide Tree Equity movement to address inequitable tree cover in cities and its life-or-death implications. Through this work, American Forests launched this Tree Equity Catalyst Fund after helping unlock the IRA’s $1.5 billion financing for urban forestry — the largest-ever federal investment in Tree Equity.
This community funding is a key part of American Forests’ goal to help at least 100 cities make meaningful progress on Tree Equity by 2030 through best-in-class tools, resources and equitable grantmaking to local leaders on the frontlines of building Tree Equity in their communities. The 33 municipalities and three community-based organizations in this first round are located across the Midwest and Northeast, receiving grants ranging from $100,000 to $2 million to support initiatives including equitable tree planning and planting, nursery development, community engagement, workforce development and more.
The cities and organizations awarded are: City of Kewanee, IL; City of Springfield, IL; Village of Rantoul, IL; City of Elkhart, IN; City of Bloomington, IN; City of Huntington, IN; City of Goshen, IN; City of Kalamazoo, MI; City of Sterling Heights, MI; City of Ann Arbor, MI; City of Jackson, MI; City of Pontiac, MI; City of Richfield, MN; City of Shoreview, MN; Onondaga Earth Corps (located in City of Syracuse, NY); Village of Haverstraw, NY; Village of Lancaster, PA; Olmsted City (located in Utica, NY); City of Yonkers, NY; Town of Smithtown, NY; City of Albany, NY; Village of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY; City of Kingston, NY; City of Long Beach, NY; City of Glens Falls, NY; City of Coshocton, OH; City of Fostoria, OH; City of Obetz, OH; City of Port Clinton, OH; City of Bowling Green, OH; City of Xenia, OH; City of Lancaster, NY; Borough of Mechanicsburg, PA; City of Allentown, PA; City of Easton, PA; Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, Inc (located in City of Johnstown, PA). Some of the projects include:
Goshen, IN: In collaboration with The Crossing School of Business and Entrepreneurship, Mennonite Men and Buschelcraft Farm, the City of Goshen is launching a county-wide arboricultural training program aimed at youth to build a pipeline of the next generation of urban foresters. The initiative is a critical effort in achieving the city’s ambitious goal of increasing tree canopy from 20% to 45% by 2045.
Olmsted City (Utica, NY): Olmsted City, a community-based organization, is leading the efforts to revitalize F.T. Proctor Park, a historical landmark in the City of Utica. This project is driven by the City of Utica and Wild Ones Mohawk Valley, an advocate for sustainable landscaping, along with support from The Center—an agency dedicated to resettling refugees from 40+ countries and other local organizations. The park will benefit from tree planting, nature-based water management, invasive species management and more, transforming into a vibrant, green public space for the city and its diverse residents.
Sterling Heights, MI: Sterling Heights recently launched The Sterling Heights Urban Reforestation Initiative (SHURI) to combat the loss of around 12,000 mature trees caused by an Emerald Ash Borer infestation. The city will plant over 1,000 trees in underserved neighborhoods to address disparities in tree cover among residential properties and boost tree density per acre. Working across municipal departments and alongside residents, this effort will be critical to reach the city’s goal of 40% tree canopy.
“American Forests is proud to support these cities and organizations and provide them with the funding and tools necessary to drive community action toward equitable tree canopy in their communities,” said Benita Hussain, Chief Program Officer of Tree Equity at American Forests. “From tackling extreme heat to reducing air pollution, tree canopy is essential for healthy, thriving communities. We are grateful to the USDA Forest Service, Congress, the Department of Agriculture and the Biden-Harris administration for this investment through the Inflation Reduction Act so we can advance Tree Equity and ensure all communities receive these targeted environmental investments.”
The next round of funding will be launched in early fall and will focus on faith-based and frontline environmental justice organizations across the country. This additional $12 million investment aims to support communities at the forefront of climate justice efforts.
USDA and American Forests are equal opportunity providers and employers.
