US Consumers Are Moving Away from Formal Diet Plans and Into Whole Body Health and Lifestyle Changes

[ad_1]

“Consumers no longer think of health and wellness as an add-on, but as an integrated part of how they live their lives; that, in turn, opens opportunity for brands to become a permanent solution,” says Darren Seifer, NPD Group food and beverage industry analyst.

US consumers’ attitudes and behavior around health and wellness are shifting from diets and “can’t haves” into whole-body health and lifestyle changes they feel will be long-lasting, reports The NPD Group. At the pandemic’s beginning, stress and disorientation drove many consumers to indulge. Still, as the pandemic went on, consumers became more focused on health and wellness, according to NPD’s recently released America’s Health Pulse: Closing the Gap Between Wants and Needs.

Dieting today for many consumers isn’t always about weight loss. To many, it’s about good nutrition and their well-being. About a quarter of US adults report to NPD they are on a diet, and 16% of those are on “their own diet” versus a formal diet plan, like intermittent fasting or keto. According to NPD, consumers today customize their diets by adapting formal diet or nutrition plans to meet their individual wellness needs and lifestyle changes.

Health and wellness goals vary by generation. When thinking about the long term, older Gen Zs, born 1997 to 2005, and younger Millennials, born 1990 to 1996, strive to look good or gain weight along with other health and wellness goals. On the other hand, older and younger Boomers are addressing their immediate health needs and want to stay healthy and live longer, finds the NPD report, which taps into several of the company’s syndicated research services, including its Health Aspirations & Behavioral Tracking Service.

“The pattern of consumer attention to health and wellness shows increasing awareness and adaptation across the board,” says Darren Seifer, NPD food and beverage industry analyst of the author of “America’s Health Pulse” report. “This means consumers no longer think of health and wellness as an add-on, but as an integrated part of how they live their lives; that, in turn, opens opportunity for brands to become a permanent solution.”

Rubi Laboratories raises $4.5m in seed funding to supply major fashion brands with carbon-negative textiles

[ad_1]

News Image

“We’re at a pivotal moment in time where mature modern technologies and advances in biotech can meet to build a world where human prosperity and economic growth are planet-positive.”

Today, Rubi Laboratories – the pioneer in carbon-negative cellulosic textiles – announces it has raised $4.5m in seed funding. The round was led by Talis Capital and Necessary Ventures, with participation from Climactic, Collaborative Fund, Plug and Play, Incite Ventures, Darco Capital, Cayuse Partners, Axial VC, Climate Capital Collective, and CapitalX. A number of industry leaders joined as angels, including James Reinhart, CEO and founder of thredUP; Manny Mashouf, CEO and founder of Bebe Stores; Nicolaj Reffstrup, founder of GANNI; Alexander Lorestanti, CEO and co-founder of Geltor; and Rei Wang, co-founder of The Grand and former CEO of Dorm Room Fund. The round also includes a $250,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The funding will enable Rubi’s R&D and commercialization to meet the textile needs of major fashion brands.

Founded in 2020 by Neeka and Leila Mashouf, Rubi Laboratories is pioneering the creation of carbon negative cellulosic textiles through its patent-pending, cell-free biocatalytic process, starting with viscose. To do this, Rubi captures CO2 from the waste streams of manufacturing facilities using its proprietary enzyme system which can capture and convert CO2 from a gas input at any concentration. The CO2 is then converted into cellulose, which can then be used to create viscose-based yarn. By utilizing enzymes as the catalyst, Rubi is able to turn 100% of CO2 inputted to the end product with zero waste.

Rubi is providing a carbon negative, zero-water and zero-land alternative to the $15bn viscose industry, which typically relies on pulp derived from wood. Roughly 35% of major fashion brands’ SKUs are made from viscose, a statistic forecasted to grow 8% every year until 2025. Viscose is the third most used textile in the world, with key uses outside of fashion in the automotive industry for items like tyres. While Rubi will initially focus on the fashion market, the company’s longer-term plans include applying the same technology to other industries such as food, packaging and building materials.

The company has raised funding at a critical moment in time for the fashion industry as major brands set ambitious targets to zero carbon, or carbon reduction goals, by 2030. Overall, the fashion industry is the third-most CO2-polluting supply chain in the world, with the majority of emissions coming from the textile supply chain. Even though today’s viscose and cotton textiles come from plants, their processing and manufacturing contribute over 10kg of CO2 per kg of textile. Rubi’s technology enables its textiles to be net carbon-negative per kg of textile. There’s immense market pressure on fashion companies to become more sustainable: at least 60% of fashion customers are demanding sustainable choices, meaning that the industry could see a $52bn profit reduction by 2030 if no action is taken. The most prevalent issue for these brands is sourcing carbon-free materials that can be scaled to meet production, and at price parity: 200 major fashion retailers are already paying a premium for organic cotton.

The founders’ vision for innovating a zero-carbon fashion industry formed in their unique experience in both technology and fashion. CEO Neeka published her first paper in artificial photosynthesis at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab when she was 15 years old, earned simultaneous degrees in Materials Engineering and Business at UC Berkeley, and then went on to manage product at both Lyft and Autodesk before founding Rubi. CTO Leila’s background is in biological engineering and novel cancer immunotherapeutics research, working on nanobiopolymer drug delivery platforms, oncolytic viruses, artificial antigen presenting cell therapies, and engineered protein conjugates since age 15, though most recently as a graduate research fellow at Stanford University Department of Neurosurgery and Bioengineering. She received her B.S. in Computational Neuroscience from the Johns Hopkins University with an in-progress Medical Doctorate from Harvard Medical School. The sisters also bring a lifetime of fashion retail exposure as a result of growing up in the space with their family business Bebe Stores, founded by their uncle Manny Mashouf, which went on to become a multi-billion dollar fashion empire.

Rubi’s first textile samples are expected to be available in March 2022. Rubi has validated its technology by creating a successful prototype and has currently agreed test plans with numerous tier-one global retail and fashion brands. Rubi is also in discussions with various multinational energy and manufacturing companies to provide CO2 to scale up production.

Neeka Mashouf, CEO and Co-Founder of Rubi Laboratories, said: “We’re at a pivotal moment in time where mature modern technologies and advances in biotech can meet to build a world where human prosperity and economic growth are planet-positive. With increased consumer and government pressure to solve fashion’s reliance on carbon-heavy textiles, innovation in textiles can have a dramatic impact on reducing fashion’s carbon emissions. In turn, we’re seeing brands demonstrating a willingness to pay a premium for these materials – as long as there’s a tangible line of sight to reach price parity with traditional materials eventually – both because they know it will drive costs down in the longer term, but also because it supports them in terms of achieving their sustainability goals. We’re excited to partner with Talis, Necessary Ventures and influential funds and angels in this space to bring Rubi’s vision to commercialization!”

Cecilia Manduca, Associate at Talis Capital, said: “As opposed to the great venture stories of the last decade, we believe that the next trillion-dollar companies in this space won’t be creating new markets like Airbnb and Uber did, but instead will replace existing trillion-dollar markets with better, cheaper and cleaner sustainable alternatives. We strongly believe that Neeka and Leila’s unique combined experience in scientific academia, product and retail will enable Rubi to become a winner in this space. We’re looking forward to seeing how this capital can supercharge the next phase of their journey and we’re delighted to be a part of it!”

Neil Devani, Managing Director at Necessary Ventures, said: “Neeka and Leila are building something the world truly needs. More sustainable, affordable, and logistically flexible supply chains are top of mind across many industries. This is something we’ve experienced with Solugen in the chemicals industry. With Rubi and textiles, there’s also a palpable response from consumers taking up the climate fight, which is driving excitement in the fashion and apparel industry. Even the videos the team has put out on TikTok are generating strong engagement in just a couple weeks of testing. They’ve already begun attracting great talent and inbound interest, and I’m proud to be supporting them on this important mission.”

Matthew Claxton, Global Director of Sustainability at Plug and Play Tech Center, said: “Plug and Play is very excited to be part of Rubi Laboratories’ journey. Their ability to target two large markets and important environmental challenges is something that we are proud to support. Neeka and Leila are knowledgeable and motivated: we truly believe their innovative company will bring a fresh and revolutionary product to many industries searching to achieve their carbon commitments.”

First day of Global Disability Summit results in ground-breaking commitments to disability rights from global leaders

[ad_1]

The Global Disability Summit logo

The Global Disability Summit

“The pandemic not only deprioritised lives and rights of persons with disabilities, not only pushed millions of persons with disabilities into poverty, but also reminded us that discrimination is very present with us,” said Yannis Vardakastanis, President of the International Disability Alliance.

Governments and other organisations from around the world came together at the online event and pledged to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Many announced new policies and funding. While the first Summit in 2018 was a real pacesetter with over 400 participants and 968 commitments, the second Summit is taking this higher and further, with more than 7000 participants and more than 1250 commitments.

  • By the end of the first day, commitments were made by more than 10 countries towards disability rights.
  • Speakers included the hosts, the Governments of Norway and Ghana and the International Disability Alliance (IDA); the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres; and representatives of 17 governments.
  • Seven UN agencies attended and committed to change the way they include people with disabilities into their work.

The virtual two-day Summit is the world’s biggest gathering of global leaders and disability rights activists and organisations dedicated to commit to change for people with disabilities. It is a vital opportunity for commitments to improve the rights of the world’s one billion people with disabilities, who were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the first day participants discussed the rights and priorities of people with disabilities in areas ranging from humanitarian disasters and climate change to employment and sexual and reproductive rights.

Some of the key commitments made were:

  • The USA made 23 commitments on disability rights. This is the first time the country has made commitments at the Summit. USAID Administrator, Samantha Power said, “As we continue to build back better, we will ensure that we deal everybody in and bring everyone along”.
  • Norway launched its first disability inclusion strategy, including increasing opportunities for people with disabilities in the job market and their priorities in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaption. It also pledged to include disability legislation in its domestic law.
  • The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office announced 18 new commitments including a new disability inclusion strategy up to 2030 and funding for the Global Action on Disability (GLAD) Network.
  • Australia will develop a new policy to promote and protect the human rights of all people with disabilities, including through its development cooperation programme.
  • Malawi committed to adopt a Zero Rejection Policy at all levels of education in-line with provisions of the Disability Act, the Malawi Constitution and the UN The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by 2022.
  • Denmark will work to combat gender-based violence in crises. As the global lead of Call to Action on Protection Against Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies 2021-2022, Denmark is committed to advocating for the inclusion of people with disabilities in efforts against gender-based violence in humanitarian contexts.
  • The European Union promised €5 million in funding for the UN Partnership on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNPRPD).
  • IDA committed to promoting leadership of underrepresented groups of persons with disabilities and to delivering technical assistance on disability-inclusive development and humanitarian action to donors and the UN system.
  • Save the Children made 12 new commitments including to support organization of children and youth with disabilities to strengthen and amplify their self-advocacy, to engage in public policy discussions and to become partners in their own right.

In his welcome to the Summit, Jonas Gahr Støre, Prime Minister of Norway said, “If the Sustainable Development Goals are to be achieved – and they are to be achieved – social and economic development must be rights based and disability inclusive. We must leave no-one behind”.

The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, added that inclusion of people with disabilities “cannot just be about economics. It has to be about equality and social justice, and above all, it must be about our humanity… We must tackle disability exclusion head on and do so with a sense of emergency”.

Yannis Vardakastanis, President of IDA, outlined the relevancy of the Summit by saying, “the pandemic not only deprioritised lives and rights of persons with disabilities, not only pushed millions of persons with disabilities into poverty, but also reminded us that discrimination is very present with us. Against this background we are gathering today and tomorrow to reposition disability rights once again on the right track”.

The second Global Disability Summit will continue tomorrow (17 February 2022). This year’s event is entirely virtual and is being live-streamed from Norway.

“Especially now, when the need is so great, I hope all Episcopalians will spend time this Lent reflecting on the lasting change we can help make possible and join me in giving generously,” said the Rev. Gay Clark Jennings, President of the House of Deputies of The Episcopal Church.

Episcopal Relief & Development invites Episcopalians and people of all faith backgrounds to see Christ in others this Lent through the 2022 Lenten Meditations. This year’s reflections focus on the organization’s three key priority areas: Women, Children and Climate, and feature a special section on Disaster Resilience and Response.

“The 2022 Lenten Meditations provide an opportunity for supporters to reflect deeply on those whose lives have been transformed by Episcopal Relief & Development’s programs,” said Josephine Hicks, Vice President, Episcopal Church Programs Episcopal Relief & Development. “Everything Episcopal Relief & Development does is inspired by five core values: faith, dignity, relationship, leadership and excellence. These meditations touch on each of these values.”

Written by leaders in The Episcopal Church, the meditations reflect an intimate knowledge of the organization’s work. The authors include the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church, the Rev. Gay Clark Jennings, president of the House of Deputies, and other leaders, both lay and clergy. As a part of Episcopal Relief & Development’s goal to become a carbon-neutral organization, the Lenten Meditations are now delivered only via email and as downloadable PDFs at episcopalrelief.org/Lent.

Supporters are also invited to observe Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday on March 6 or another convenient time during the season. Lent was officially designated at the 2009 General Convention of The Episcopal Church as a time for dioceses, congregations and individuals to remember and support the work of Episcopal Relief & Development. Although the first Sunday in Lent is the official day of observance, churches may hold a special service on any Sunday. Liturgical resources to help congregations observe Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday are available at episcopalrelief.org/sunday.

“I have been fortunate enough to witness first-hand the remarkable ways in which the work of Episcopal Relief & Development transforms lives around the world,” said the Rev. Gay Clark Jennings, President of the House of Deputies of The Episcopal Church. “Especially now, when the need is so great, I hope all Episcopalians will spend time this Lent reflecting on the lasting change we can help make possible and join me in giving generously.”

IWP an Invaluable Lifeline to Vulnerable Injured Workers

[ad_1]

Workers’ compensation lawyer Todd Strong, the founder of Strong Law Offices in Peoria, Illinois, was recently quoted in an article published in NAOHP addressing access to medical care issues.

The article, “IWP: A Solution for Occupational Health Providers to Offer Medications in Disputed WC Cases”, discusses the challenges injured workers in Illinois face in obtaining quality medical care when their work injury claims are delayed or denied.

“IWP is a fantastic equalizer and champion for the injured worker. They provide access to quality pharmaceutical products for the injured worker who has been wrongfully denied or delayed when the injured worker is most vulnerable to insurance company tactics,” according to Todd Strong.

The workers’ compensation lawyers at Strong Law Offices have a long history of advocating for injured workers in Illinois.

According to Mr. Strong, “Insurance companies fight, deny and delay access to Medical Care at every step in an injury case. Our office works with our clients to assess and understand their medical needs. We assist our clients in locating medical providers, such as online pharmacies, that are willing to extend medical care on credit, knowing that the litigation process takes time. Medical providers who are familiar with the Worker’s Compensation laws and procedures know in advance that the insurance companies actively practice polices of unfairness and delay. Insurance Carriers hope to shift costs to the taxpayers through Medicare/Medicaid, or even other group health insurance companies, despite knowing and accepting individual responsibility for the wrongs of their insureds. We fight hard to help our clients navigate this difficult system of “Stall and Delay” tactics. Knowing and understanding the needs of clients and also medical providers is important in establishing those connections to ultimately achieve a more successful outcome for injury victims.”

About Todd Strong

Injury lawyer Todd Strong has decades of experience advocating for injured victims throughout Chicago and Central Illinois. He founded Strong Law Offices in 1999. With locations in Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington, Champaign, and Chicago in Illinois, Strong Law Offices helps injured victims with cases involving workers’ compensation, personal injury, and medical malpractice.
