Wisconsin Center for Employee Ownership (WICEO) Announces $50,000 Grant from WEDC

The nonprofit Wisconsin Center for Employee Ownership (WICEO) is pleased to announce a two-year, $50,000 capacity building grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC). The WEDC grant will focus on outreach to rural areas of Wisconsin and to companies with majority-BIPOC workforces about the benefits of employee ownership via Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), worker cooperatives, and Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs).

MILWAUKEE, Dec. 3, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The nonprofit Wisconsin Center for Employee Ownership (WICEO) – the central hub for information and resources regarding transitioning Wisconsin businesses to an employee ownership model – is pleased to announce a two-year, $50,000 capacity building grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC).

The WEDC grant will allow WICEO to increase its capacity to address the ever increasing racial wealth equity divide by conducting outreach to businesses in rural areas of Wisconsin and those with majority-BIPOC workforces about the benefits of employee ownership via Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), worker cooperatives, and Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs).

“In rural communities, a business owner’s retirement can too often mean the loss of a valued business,” said Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “Employee ownership is one way for businesses to successfully navigate these transitions. This grant will allow the WICEO to educate and support more business owners planning for the future.”

As a result of this funding, WICEO is pleased to announce the hiring of Ryan Kauth as the non-profit organization’s first staff member. In his role as part-time Executive Director, Kauth will begin statewide programming, education, and outreach on all forms of employee ownership. Kauth is a business coach, lecturer at the Wisconsin School of Business, and has spent the past 25 years working with business owners, including financing strategies and exit strategies.

“We are grateful to the WEDC for their financial support of the WICEO mission adding to our capacity to carry out our mission by hiring a great candidate like Ryan,” said Steve Storkan, Executive Director of the Employee Ownership Expansion Network and Board Member of the WICEO. “We know from experience with other State Centers for Employee Ownership that once a staff member is hired, the effectiveness of a state center in delivering their message about the positive effects of employee ownership for business owners, workers, and communities increases dramatically.”

Humanitru Revolutionizes Nonprofit Stewardship with New Automation Tool

Data silos have long been a thorn in the side of nonprofits, often hindering all elements of their success. Humanitru’s Stewardship Automation tool eliminates these barriers, ensuring that fundraising, stewardship, and marketing teams have full visibility into constituent engagement and stewardship touchpoints. This comprehensive view promotes collaboration and unity in supporter interactions.

“At Humanitru, we’ve always been obsessed with helping nonprofits engage with their supporters, donors, and volunteers in ways that efficiently scale for better, more authentic fundraising,” said Alan Wei, CEO, Humanitru. “We started off by consolidating that kind of data all into one place to enable this next, exciting phase of software designed to help provide nonprofit staff with more of their most sought-after resource: time.”

As nonprofits evolve and grow, they can do so confidently knowing that the Stewardship Automation solution scales with them. The tool’s pricing strategy is based on the number of actions processed, not the total number of supporters in the database, ensuring it remains cost-effective and valuable as nonprofits expand their reach.

The launch of Humanitru’s Stewardship Automation tool underscores the organization’s unwavering commitment to providing innovative solutions that empower nonprofits to thrive, even in uncertain times. Stewardship isn’t just a practice; it’s a lifeline, and Humanitru is ensuring that nonprofits have the tools they need to grasp it firmly and build lasting relationships with their major donors. More about this time-saving new tool can be found at humanitru.com/stewardship-automation.

Kerico Health Care Expands Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Services to Arkansas Following 300% Year-Over-Year Growth in Texas

Kerico Health Care Expands Vital Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Services to Seniors in Arkansas Following Remarkable Success in Texas

HOUSTON, Dec. 2, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Kerico Health Care, a Houston-based provider of door-through-door Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT), is pleased to announce that its ride services have become available to seniors in Arkansas. The expansion comes on the heels of a staggering 300% year-over-year growth in Texas, where the startup has partnered directly with specialty clinics, hospitals, and primary care providers since 2018 to reduce no-show appointments by up to 40%.

The Arkansas launch builds upon Kerico Health Care’s two-fold mission: to provide reliable medical appointment transportation to America’s aging population and reduce the 50% no-show appointment rate across all medical appointments. $1 spent on NEMT saves $11 on emergency care, making Kerico’s NEMT services a crucial component of supporting senior health and improving healthcare providers’ bottom lines.

Entrepreneur Michael Morris was inspired to form Kerico Health Care while struggling to keep up with his mother’s cancer treatment appointments. With 25% of seniors no longer driving and 50% of seniors struggling to secure trustworthy transportation on any given day, Morris realized that caretakers like himself, healthcare clinics, and patients all stand to benefit from high-quality NEMT services.

“We spend much of our effort on improving the driver-patient relationship. The patient’s health care journey starts with the ride, not at the appointment, and it is common for a patient to spend more time with their NEMT driver than their doctor,” said Morris. “This is one of the reasons why Kerico is successful. Health care providers are realizing the impact the ride can have on a patient’s preventative care appointment and patient experience.”

This quality over quantity philosophy earned the Kerico team the lowest complaint rate and highest compliment rate for NEMT across 150 Wellmed locations in Texas. For PADS specialists in particular, Kerico’s senior service has reduced the no-show appointment rate by 40%.

As Kerico Health Care rolls out its Arkansas operation, it will aim to replicate this success and become the gold standard of NEMT in Arkansas with its tried and true business model:

  • First, the Kerico team will contract with specialty clinics, hospitals, and primary care providers, who are ultimately the Kerico customers.
  • Next, these clinics will tell the Kerico team where to pick up the patient, who the patient is, where they need to go, and when they need to be there. Each vehicle is equipped with the latest tracking technology to provide real-time updates on ride status.
  • Finally, the Kerico team will focus on providing an excellent ride experience with patient, compassionate drivers who understand the patients’ sensitivities.

Kerico’s Arkansas NEMT services are available in sedans, wheelchair vans, or ambulatory vehicles, depending on the patient and appointment. Unlike taxis and ride-share services, each trip is a door-through-door service where the Kerico driver will be available to walk patients from their homes to the clinic’s reception area.

“Transportation is often overlooked when it comes to patient care,” continued Morris. “Although it doesn’t seem as powerful as a new drug or breakthrough technology, reliable access to safe transportation is the foundation of an effective healthcare journey. When patients arrive on time for their appointments and feel taken care of every step of the way, everything from the quality of their care to providers’ bottom lines improves.”

NEMT through Kerico Health Care is now available to seniors in Arkansas. For more information on contracting with Kerico and NEMT services for seniors, please visit http://www.kericocare.com or click here to contact the team directly.

Local Non-Profits Receive More than $288,000 in Grants to Advance Southern California Clean Energy Initiatives

“Providing funding to these community organizations helps advance their work in clean energy, sustainability and resiliency and enhances the health and wellbeing of the communities CPA serves,” said Gina Goodhill, Clean Power Alliance’s Senior Director of Government Affairs. “The selected projects will benefit thousands of individuals and move us closer to a clean energy future.”

Calpine Energy Solutions awards the program funding, while CPA develops the grant guidelines and helps recruit local non-profit organizations to apply for the funding. Both organizations work together to review the applications and choose awardees. This year’s application period took place from Aug. 1 to Oct. 6, 2023.

Josh Brock, Calpine Energy Solutions’ Vice President of CCA Commercial Operations, says the annual Community Benefits Grant Program provides an opportunity to develop long-term partnerships with groups working to bring environmental benefits to their communities.

“Calpine Energy Solutions is committed to our many CCA partners and the wide range of communities they serve,” said Brock. “We are delighted to continue sponsoring this program which does a great job of highlighting the important work of many community organizations, while amplifying the positive impact Clean Power Alliance has throughout Southern California.”

This year’s grant recipients include the following non-profit organizations:

Climate First: Replacing Oil & Gas ($25,000)  Funds will go toward workforce development to increase career exploration and community awareness of green industry opportunities. Alongside local trade unions, the organization will utilize virtual reality (VR) to provide an introduction to offshore wind production and turbine maintenance.

Columbia Memorial Space Center ($20,000) – Funds will support City of STEM, the largest program promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in Los Angeles. The program is committed to opening equitable access to STEM learning, especially to those members of the public from marginalized communities, as well as under-resourced neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.

Friends of the Los Angeles River ($25,000) – Funds will be used to support The LA River & Me Education Program and general operations. The LA River & Me Program provides an opportunity to connect 140 classes from 70 Title 1 schools to the natural world. The program brings students to the LA River on a field trip, where they participate in three interactive educational stations. The LA River watershed covers more than 800 square miles of the most densely populated, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse region in the United States. The program covers 21 of CPA’s member communities, with priority to applicants from Alhambra, Carson, Downey, Paramount, and South Pasadena.

Grid Alternatives LA ($20,000) – Funds will be used to provide homeowners in Carson and Whittier with reroofs, service panel upgrades, and any other necessary professional services to access no-cost solar energy systems.

LA Regional Collaborative for Climate Action and Sustainability (LARC) ($20,000) – Funds will be used to create a Clean Energy Education Campaign to educate the public in the greater Los Angeles region about the benefits of clean energy and promote more sustainable energy usage. LARC will form a Community Advisory Group (CAG) to guide the campaign and will enlist two UCLA College Corps Fellows in the campaign.

Merito Foundation ($30,000)  – Funds will be used toward advancing energy literacy and green workforce development opportunities for Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) students. The project will empower 1,200 multicultural and economically unprivileged VUSD students in grades 7-12 to innovate solutions that reduce the carbon footprint of their school campuses through six months of in-class energy literacy, culminating in a STEM competition.

Oxnard Performing Arts Center ($23,900) – Funds will be used to incorporate solar energy art activities and education into a year-long initiative. The program is expected to reach 20,000 individuals, including teens, youth, and families within Ventura County. Activities will include Solar Summer Camp, Family Art Night, and the launch of a solar art cart to be used at various events.

Pando Populus ($20,000) – Funding will go toward Pando Days, a project-centered learning program for colleges and universities focused on implementing Los Angeles County’s sustainability goals. This year’s program spans 20 universities and community colleges throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Santa Monica Mountains Foundation ($25,000) – Funding will support the development of the Los Angeles region’s first native seed production farm. This project will seek to increase resiliency to climate change, mitigate the threat of extreme wildfires, offer employment opportunities and environmental education for diverse youth, and enhance wildlife habitat and ecosystems.

Tree People ($25,000) – Funding will support the Tree People Eco Tours, where trained leaders lead K-6 students and teachers on guided trail hikes to experience the outdoors while learning about the concepts of climate change. This funding will help expand education to disadvantaged youth from both Los Angeles and Ventura counties, to experience STEM and ensure inclusive environmental education.

U.S. Green Business Council (USGBC) ($30,000) – Funding will be used to develop a certification for construction professionals to learn and adopt best practices around improvements and materials for buildings and landscapes to reduce the long-term extreme heat-related impacts of climate change. This training will build upon the successful model developed and implemented by USGBC-LA to provide wildfire defense training and certifications for construction and landscaping professionals.

Ventura County Community Foundation ($25,000) – Funding will be used for operational support to increase coordination and capacity building around the foundation’s environmental literacy programming, workforce development in green jobs, and resiliency for outdoor workers faced with extreme heat.

The next round of Community Benefits Grant Program applications will open in the fall of 2024.

Bent Inn Opens Today, December 1, in Resurgent Downtown Las Vegas

“Everyone needs a place where they are free to be themselves. And that’s Bent Inn,” says Kafka, who serves as Bent Inn’s chief experience officer. “Although “straight friendly,” our goal is to set the travel standard for what we call the Bent Community (the not-so-straight, nerdy cool, khakis-by-day-leather-by-night, pink hair, crew cut, black nail polish, no nail polish, nose ring, hairy, smooth, fem, masc, butch, he, she, they, them, Jack and Coke, dirty martini, daiquiri, top, bottom, vers, side, switch). It’s for those of us that make life interesting.”

“We hired exceptional staff who will help Bent Inn become a playfully welcoming place for adults where unforgettable experiences and connections are formed.” notes Mark Hunter, chief escape officer. “Community is very important to us, and we have been fortunate to be able to cultivate that at our previous resorts.”

The duo hired Will Glenn as the resort’s general manager. “Will’s extensive background in gaming, food and beverage, and quality of customer care made him the perfect choice for the Bent Inn,” adds Hunter.

Glenn has opened restaurants from the ground up, including multiple 3 Tomatoes & a Mozzarella locations, and entertainment bars like Whiskey Dick’s. In his spare time, Will works with local charity organizations within the LGBTQ+ community to help raise awareness, and money for those in need of HIV medications.

Chef Julianna Medel will use her culinary knowledge and passion for a fusion-based, fresh-from-scratch approach in the Bent Inn Gastropub. She’s worked under chefs from a variety of traditions to hone her own unique culinary style. Her Las Vegas experience includes Rock ‘N’oodles in the arts district and Majordomo on the strip. PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 1, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) recently wrapped up its National Women’s Business Conference, which culminates in an awards gala honoring exceptional women leaders. One of the top awards is the Susan Hager Legacy Award, named after NAWBO’s founding president, and this year it went to Ana Fernandez-Parmet of Parmetech, Inc. for her ongoing commitment to propelling NAWBO’s mission locally and nationally.

Susan was a stalwart champion of women’s economic empowerment and built a legacy for others to follow. She famously said, “Get a seat at the table or build your own table, and make sure to include other women at that table.” The Susan Hager Legacy Award honors a person who by giving her time, talent and resources, has helped to further the legacy of women’s entrepreneurship now and for generations to come.

Ana, a first generation Cuban American, is president and CEO of the Pennsylvania-based Parmetech, Inc. She and her husband, Mike Parmet, co-founded the company in 1991, selling only remanufactured toner cartridges for laser printers and later expanding into break-fix service.

Today, Parmetech is a certified woman- and minority-owned enterprise that has successfully evolved into a full-service consulting firm and is a leading regional document management solutions provider. The firm has received top awards for customer service and sales from Xerox Corporation, including Top Reseller and Partner of the Year.

Ana joined NAWBO Philadelphia in 2000 and was active on the chapter’s Board for 17 consecutive years. She was Alliance chair and co-chair, served on the Executive Committee as secretary and vice president, and was president elect from 2016-2018, president from 2018-2020 and immediate past president from 2020-2022.

Today, Ana shares all this NAWBO leadership knowledge with other chapter leaders as part of the President Assembly Steering Committee. She is also part of the NAWBO Circle program, which gives her access to women like herself with $1 million+ companies who she could talk freely with and troubleshoot challenges.

Ana was incredibly surprised to be nominated for this honor. “I’ve won awards in the past, but I was reading the criteria for this award and just felt very honored and humbled. I have given this organization a lot of my years. When I was president, I felt like I had two full-time jobs trying to grow the chapter and my business, but I did it because I love NAWBO.”
