The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) Celebrates 20th Anniversary of its Palliative Care Leadership Centers

CAPC’s Palliative Care Leadership Centers’ social entrepreneurship model is the key to the diffusion of innovation in health care. PCLC training reduces the opportunity costs for palliative care program startup and delivery. It also standardizes best practices for all areas of program development and growth, including business and financial planning, clinical and staffing models, measurement, and staffing. Over the past 20 years, more than 1,300 palliative care teams have trained with a PCLC. And, 80% of them went on to institute palliative care services within two years.

Today, there are eight Palliative Care Leadership Centers, including:

  • Bluegrass Care Navigators, Lexington, KY
  • Mount Carmel Health System, Columbus, OH
  • Northwell Health, Manhasset, NY
  • Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Albuquerque, NM
  • University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Medical Center, Birmingham, AL
  • University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), San Francisco, CA
  • University of Virginia Health System (UVA), Charlottesville, VA
  • Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center; Richmond, VA

“As the demand for palliative care services has increased exponentially, it remains vitally important that we continue to build and expand successful, sustainable palliative care programs. We are proud that Palliative Care Leadership Centers have played a crucial role in providing a necessary foundation of practical knowledge and coaching for new and growing palliative care teams for more than two decades,” said Brynn Bowman, chief executive officer at CAPC.

eddii, a gamified diabetes app, is now available in sixteen states across the United States

“We strive to serve families in all parts of the United States who would like easier access to diabetes care. We will soon be launching our virtual care platform in states where eddii is live. That means, on the same fun, gamified app that streams their child’s real-time glucose data from their Dexcom CGM, parents will soon be able to schedule an appointment with a licensed pediatric endocrinologist at the tap of a button,” said Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD, eddii’s CEO.

Achieving optimal glucose for children with diabetes requires round-the-clock management. There are hundreds of decisions to make every day; monitoring blood glucose changes and considering all the factors besides food and insulin that affect blood glucose. This is in addition to making decisions on how to interpret nutrition labels, what monitor to use, how to wear it correctly and deal with any chafing or discomfort, how to prepare for a school field trip or a sleepover, and on and on. Every day it’s something different, and every single day it must be managed.

eddii is a virtual in-app character designed to engage people living with type-1 diabetes (T1D) and wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to track their health. Using games, educational character-led activities, and AI-enabled conversation (coming soon!), eddii becomes a smart, virtual health buddy, giving users real-time feedback, support, and in-app rewards in return for healthy behavior.

Earlier this year, eddii entered a real-time API partnership with Dexcom, which allowed the app to integrate with the users’ real-time Dexcom CGM readings, delivering updates on blood glucose levels. For those outside of eddii’s 16 active states, you can join the eddii app’s early access program here.

With eddii, children and their families take managing diabetes to the next level, motivating them to stick to healthy routines, without those routines feeling like a constant chore. Users can play fun games, request support, and receive daily rewards on the same interface that displays their real-time CGM data. Over time, eddii becomes the user’s personal health buddy, cheering them on, challenging them, and celebrating their achievements.

“We will soon be launching further motivational games and rewards for children, such as real-life gift cards, in addition to glucose-alert phone calls and a comprehensive virtual care platform for parents. That way, parents can have a reliable interface ready at the beep of a BG alert, for more comprehensive diabetes management.”

eddii conducted a clinical trial where 92 children with T1D and their families were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using Dexcom CGMs. Outcomes from the trial showed a statistically significant 5% improvement in Time In Range (TIR), roughly translating into 1.5 additional hours every day of optimal glucose levels for children living with T1D.

In addition to launching in two states and partnering with Dexcom, eddii recently closed a $2.5M seed round led by Kapor Capital, with participation from Atento Capital, MedMountain Ventures (MMV), StartUp Health, and angel investors.

About eddii

eddii is a startup focused on making diabetes management fun. Founded by CEO Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD., who lives with Type-1 diabetes, its vision is to create a fun, supportive, and educational interface that helps people living with diabetes take care of themselves and feel happier doing so. A $2,000 Scholarship Will be Awarded January 29th for the Best Essay in the National Conscience Month Contest

According to Leonard Perlmutter (Ram Lev), originator of National Conscience Month and author of the insightful book, YOUR CONSCIENCE, “At the present time there is no educational curriculum focused on teaching students exactly how the mind makes decisions, and how to use the Conscience as a practical resource in this process. This national essay contest for high school seniors comes at a critical moment in their personal development, and can establish an awareness of the positive value of regularly experimenting with using their Conscience as a trusted guide to knowing, with exquisite confidence, what’s to be done and what’s not to be done.”

High school seniors can enter the scholarship contest now, and submissions will be accepted through January 29, 2024. The contest winner will be announced the first week in February, 2024.

The mission of National Conscience Month is to foster a national conversation that inspires individuals of all ages and political affiliations, governments, school systems, faith leaders, non-profits, community organizations, corporations, believers, atheists and agnostics across the world to experiment with using their Conscience in choosing their thoughts, words and deeds. This month-long observance is the perfect time to clarify our individual and collective vision by using the Conscience as an inspired and trustworthy guide to making better decisions that can resolve all of life’s challenges.

SAASTEPS Announces Philanthropic Strategy Through Steps of Kindness Program

The program’s first partnership with the Blind Institute of Technology (BIT) started out as a business relationship that began several years ago, when co-founder Tim Beck was referred to BIT founder Mike Hess as a subject matter expert (SME) within the Salesforce economy. “I have come to find out that Tim is not only a SME, [but] he is also an inclusion champion. Tim has been helpful to BIT discussing technical concepts and business opportunities,” said Hess. BIT was founded by Hess after he spent nearly 20 years within the telecom industry, often being labeled as the “token blind guy”. Hess eventually left the corporate world after learning about the alarming 80% unemployment and underemployment rate among the blind and visually impaired (BVI) community. Hess recognized the untapped expertise and capabilities in the BVI, thereby commencing BIT’s transformative journey into the only consulting agency in the world comprised of people with disabilities.

SAASTEPS sponsored BIT’s annual Dining in the Dark Gala for a second year in a row this past October. The gala raises funds to help significantly reduce the severe un/underemployment rates within the BVI community. The event also offers attendees a unique sensory opportunity – dining without sight. “We wore blindfolds for part of the dinner,” said SAASTEPS attendee and Director of Business Development Todd Zitin. “Mike offered humorous encouragement and advice on how to work on our plates without the benefit of light, which we all take for granted.” Hess includes this as part of the gala each year in order to foster heart-centered conversations around blindness and disability, which he says are the most taboo of all inclusion-oriented topics. “I walked away from this experience with a renewed sense of respect and empathy for our fellow human beings. By closing our eyes, we opened our minds to gain valuable perspective of our human family,” said Zitin.

“We’re so grateful for all of the opportunities and resources we have access to,” said Rachel Beck. “As the business grows, it’s more important than ever for us to give back, to leave steps of kindness, wherever we can.” Look out for more initiatives from Steps of Kindness, coming soon.

I-MAK Releases a Policy Blueprint to Address Patent Thickets, Improve Competition, and Lower Prescription Drug Prices

The proposed policies set out in the blueprint are based on specifically addressing some of the root causes and strategies brand-name drugmakers use to build patent thickets under the current laws and procedures. It calls for sensible and long overdue reforms that will return integrity to the patent system by strengthening transparency, encouraging evidence-based policy, and raising the level of patent quality and inventiveness, all while strengthening competition and helping lower drug prices. Given the unsustainable increases in the prices of medicines year on year in the U.S, this blueprint is intended to help policymakers, stakeholders, and the public to engage in discussions about patent reform, and find solutions that will address the pharmaceutical patent thicket problem that allows drugmakers to game the system in order to maximize revenues at the cost of patients.

I-MAK’s blueprints use a Participatory Changemaking (PCM) model to synthesize information gathered through literature reviews, key informant interviews, and by convening a diverse group of stakeholders in order to identify potential policy options. The policies in this blueprint were developed based on evidence and the practice experiences of lawyers, scientists, generic and biosimilar companies, as well as clinical practitioners and patients who are using many of the medicines that are affected by the current workings of the patent system.

“By adopting these measures, we can bring integrity back to the patent system as intended by the Constitution, which is to reward original inventions for a limited time and ensure the system actually serves the public by ensuring that life-saving medications remain within reach for every person,” says Tahir Amin, CEO of I-MAK.

I-MAK’s research and reports have been lauded for exposing the abuses of the patent system while finding bi-partisan solutions that address the root causes of structural inequities in the medicines system. Believe a Buddy is the Holiday Gift Filled With Mindfulness and Affirmations to Empower and Inspire Children

“Winston lovingly gives children a vote of confidence from a loving pal who boosts their self-image and offers them a welcome nudge to try hard things. The accompanying affirmation cards can be pulled daily in the house before the kids go off to school, in the classroom, in a hospital setting or anywhere a child may be.”

Winston comes with 52 affirmation cards for ages 3+, inspiring children to wake up and start their day with intention. The cuddly bear features a plush heart pouch that holds the affirmation cards, perpetually positioned arms for constant hugs, stars on the paws symbolizing the magic of affirmations, and a heart of gold at the center of the belly to remind children of the power of self-belief.

Kozuch has never shied away from life’s difficulties. Her personal experience led to the founding of Believe a Buddy. In 2008, she was paralyzed in an accident and doctors told her she would never walk again. Instead of believing in her daunting diagnosis, she wrote an affirmation on her hospital whiteboard that stated, “Cat will walk out of here!…duh!”

During her three-month hospital stay, her father gave her a new teddy bear each time he traveled for work. The collection was pinned around the whiteboard affirmation. Finally, after weeks of speaking her affirmation out loud, a miracle happened – Cat walked out of the hospital. Through determination and visualization, she turned her recovery journey into a meaningful mission to motivate children. The seed was planted and what has blossomed is a brand centered on love, mindfulness and positivity.

Eighteen years later, Cat would launch the purposeful brand Believe a Buddy. Through the Receive a Buddy donation program, children with medical disabilities receive a Believe a Buddy.

Winston is priced at $62. For more information and to receive a donation, visit http://www.believeabuddy.com.

About Believe a Buddy:
Our mission is to empower children to believe in themselves and their abilities through positive affirmations. We believe every child deserves to feel confident, capable and loved, regardless of their circumstances.

eLuma and Aperture Education Partner to Address the Growing Student Mental Health Crisis

“Schools have unrealized needs to fulfill tiered mental health support, and evaluating students’ needs is not a straightforward process,” said Jeremy Glauser, founder and CEO of eLuma. “With our partnership with Aperture, we’re now able to provide a critical piece of the MTSS puzzle while creating greater efficiencies for under-resourced schools—helping reduce costs while improving student outcomes in academics and social-emotional learning and mental health.”

Schools continue to struggle to meet the full spectrum of mental health services for students. These entail implementing proactive social, emotional and behavioral supports, reliably identifying students who would benefit from additional assistance, and pairing these students with the right interventions and programs to deliver positive outcomes. eLuma’s partnership with Aperture gives schools the tools to develop comprehensive, school-based mental health systems and practices.

“By pinpointing students who require support, Aperture helps schools proactively identify student needs,” said Vivek Kartha, CEO of Riverside Insights. “Should data show that these students need higher levels of support, educators can seamlessly connect with eLuma’s team of licensed online school counselors, speech-language pathologists or occupational therapists.”

MTSS programs often lack scalable Tier I assessment solutions that identify intervention needs and guide educators through transitions in Tiers I, II and III. Without clear, ongoing visibility into students’ social and emotional needs, it’s difficult for educators to allocate resources and deliver vital interventions to students effectively. This partnership leverages Aperture’s universal screening, progress monitoring and intervention solutions—integral components of a comprehensive, school-based mental health program.

Together, eLuma and Aperture offer a one-stop MTSS that addresses key areas of support:

  • Identification and Provision of Social-Emotional Learning Services: Aperture’s DESSA assessments and interventions help schools more easily identify and provide students with the necessary social-emotional learning supports. By proactively identifying student strengths and needs, educators can use these assessment results to engage students in activities that promote emotional resilience and overall well-being. The DESSA also helps educators better understand which students need higher levels of support.
  • Expert Consultation: For schools that lack staff to properly manage a screening solution, eLuma can help optimize their implementation. eLuma’s dedicated consultants are experienced in establishing foundations for strong school-based mental health and can collect and analyze data and recommend interventions that will have a meaningful impact on students.
  • Solutions that Meet the Needs of Students at all Tiers: With eLuma/Aperture, schools can leverage data gathered from DESSA and provide student support at each MTSS tier, maximizing the efficiency of their staff and interventions. eLuma’s licensed providers can help fill critical staffing gaps, providing virtual Tier II or Tier III interventions to students who need them, including IEP and 504-based related services.

Special education staffing shortages continue to overburden school specialists, with 78% of public school leaders reporting difficulty in hiring special education staff and 40% indicating that it was difficult or very difficult to fill “mental health professional” roles, according to the American School Counselor Association. This comes at a time when teen rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors have risen by approximately 40% over the past 10 years. While Aperture provides actionable support for at-risk students, eLuma allows schools to offer a hybrid mental health approach that maximizes or augments a school’s existing staffing model. Whether schools need specific services (such as psychoeducational evaluations or staff professional development) or more intensive clinical services, eLuma can support the needs of educators and districts.

As schools face a formidable funding cliff and are looking for ways to consolidate vendors and maximize their investments, eLuma and Aperture’s partnership offers a cost-effective solution as districts seek to stretch federal and local funding.
