Gilbane Building Company Promotes Heidi DeBenedetti to Chief Operating Officer

In her role as COO, DeBenedetti will lead operations and administration, driving excellence, quality, consistency, and risk management in both support and field operations. She will also oversee Gilbane’s industry-leading efforts in economic inclusion and sustainability. She will continue to provide leadership to the company’s federal business and enterprise oversight of insurance, safety, and information technology.

As the chief administrative officer and regional president, DeBenedetti has provided strategic leadership on the core functions of safety, risk, and insurance; and information technology. She also oversaw Gilbane’s operations in the federal and southeast divisions. Her divisional oversight reached more than 650 employees and annual revenue exceeding $1.5 billion.

DeBenedetti joined Gilbane in 2015 as a key part of the company’s global advancement initiative. In her role leading the company’s federal business, she successfully streamlined operations, exceeded client expectations, and championed team member development. Prior to joining Gilbane, DeBenedetti spent nearly 11 years with CH2M Hill, an engineering company.

“This is an exciting time to be a part of the Gilbane team. Our commitment to being a people-first business and investing back in the communities we serve—all while delivering best-in-class results for our clients—motivates me every day to deliver on our mission of building more than buildings,” said DeBenedetti. “I’m honored to step into this new role and eager to strengthen the Gilbane team around the world.”

Some of DeBenedetti’s recent notable projects in the southeast and federal divisions include Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice, Fla.; the Toronto Blue Jays Spring Training Facility Improvements and Player Development Complex in Dunedin, Fla.; the Army Institute for Public Health in Maryland, the Rhine Ordinance Barracks Medical Center Replacement in Germany; the King Khalid Air Base in Saudi Arabia; and additional Air Force bases in New Mexico and California.

DeBenedetti serves on the executive leadership committee for Construction Inclusion Week, a national industrywide initiative to support diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is also the executive sponsor for empoWer, Gilbane’s employee resource group dedicated to supporting women working in the company. DeBenedetti serves on the Board of the Heart of Florida United Way and is a member of the steering committee for The Associated General Contractors of America South Florida.

DeBenedetti earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and an MBA from Colorado State University. She is a Designated Design-Build Professional (DBIA) and has been a featured speaker for Engineering News Record’s Groundbreaking Women in Construction annual conference.

RARE-X Launches Pompe Consortium to Support Patient-Owned Data Collection and Aggregated Data Sharing with Patient Community, Biopharma and Research Collaborators

“The Pompe Consortium will help define a new model for the way rare disease patient-owned data is gathered, shared, connected and used,” said Charlene Son Rigby, CEO of Global Genes. “By working together, the participants in The Pompe Consortium recognize they will be able to access greater amounts of data, significantly reduce the cost of collecting and maintaining it, and reduce the burden on patients who want to share their health information to advance the development of new therapies.”

Pompe disease is a lysosomal storage disorder in which an enzyme deficiency results in an accumulation of a stored form of sugar in specific parts of cells in the body. The consequence can be tissue damage, for example to muscles, the heart, and other organs. The disease was first identified in 1932, and the first treatment for the condition, an enzyme replacement therapy, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006. There continues to be a need to better understand the disease to improve diagnosis and develop new treatments that support
patients who still experience progression as well as access challenges throughout the world.

“We think the experience with Pompe offers an opportunity (and responsibility) to create a path for other diseases and build out a scalable model to show what pooling patient owned data looks like – and what it can do! Additionally, we can show how modernized roles and relationships between different players can create new experiences that support the ecosystem health and will accelerate discoveries,” said Ryan Colburn, a Pompe disease advocate and an organizer of The Pompe Consortium.

The Pompe Consortium includes the participation of biopharmaceutical companies and patient advocacy organizations, as well as academic researchers. They include Sanofi, Astellas, Charlie’s Garden, Grants Giants, New Zealand Pompe Network, Pompe Alliance, Pompe Warrior Foundation, Marshall’s Mountain, Rykers Foundation, Pompe AWay, and additional Pompe advocates and investigators.

As with all data collection efforts leveraging the RARE-X platform, patients own their data and control who will have access to it through a novel data governance structure. The goal is to add and interconnect as much relevant data as possible and enable the broadest usage possible.

Patient engagement is a cornerstone in the rare disease world, where patients who want to advance research recognize the opportunity in sharing their data and responding to questionnaires from multiple researchers (even though they are asked overlapping sets of questions). However, this can be a time-consuming process that’s difficult for patients and caregivers, who may be juggling multiple demands at once. It is also often difficult for researchers to pool meaningful amounts of data due to the challenges with access and reach for individual studies.

The RARE-X platform is designed to ensure its members will gather and share high-quality, compliant data, while improving efficiencies, for each role involved. Participants sharing data leveraging the RARE-X platform, through novel data governance, can ensure their data will be put to broad use, to advance the understanding of Pompe disease and drive the development of new therapies forward.

This consortium will create efficiencies that will allow us to improve the quality and volume of data provided by patients and ease access for patients who would like to participate in research and have yet to do so.

Whispp to Debut New Real-Time Assistive Voice Technology, Helping Millions with Voice Disabilities Speak in Their Natural Voice

How the Whispp App Works.

Whispp fundamentally differs from existing voice conversion technologies because of its ability to convert voiceless speech (speech that does not have a discernible pitch) to natural and voiced speech.

  • Whispp uses audio-to-audio-based AI, resulting in real-time speech conversion, which is highly scalable due to its language-independent nature.
  • Users also have the unique ability to recreate their distinct voice by providing recordings of their current or past healthy voice, adding a personalized touch to their communication.
  • Whispp accommodates a wide spectrum of voice types — from soft whispers to rough speech resulting from a total laryngectomy after throat cancer — providing a tailored solution for various conditions. Whispp is even more innovative because, for several disorders, deliberately steering the voice towards whispering helps due to neurological changes in the speech system.
  • People who stutter severely, for example, can reduce their stuttering frequency by an average of 85% while whispering. Additionally, people who suffer from spasmodic dysphonia or recurrent respiratory papillomatosis speak much more relaxed and fluently when they whisper.
  • Unlike conventional speech-to-text (STT) approaches with noticeable latency and an uneven conversational flow, Whispp provides real-time speech conversion, eliminating barriers to natural communication.

At CES 2023, Whispp introduced the ability to send asynchronous message texts, enhancing the overall communication experience by allowing messages to be exchanged at the recipient’s pace, adding flexibility and convenience to the platform. Whispp’s new product features accommodate a wide spectrum of voice types, providing a tailored solution for various conditions. Even in noisy environments, Whispp allows clear communication and the ability to maintain one’s clarity of speech regardless of external disturbances.

Contact [email protected] to set up a meeting at CES 2024 between January 7-12 in Las Vegas, or learn more at https://whispp.com. Access the Whispp press kit here.

About Whispp

Powered by AI, Whispp’s speech technology empowers millions of people who suffer from a voice disability or stutter severely with the ability to speak in their own natural voice, intended intonation and emotion in real-time. Whispp also enables phone and video calls with more privacy for those without voice disorders, so conversations are kept private without disturbing others. Founded in 2018, Whispp is a privately held company based in Leiden, The Netherlands. Follow Whispp on YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, X and Facebook or learn more at https://whispp.com.

Ballad Health, LIFT Healthcare Recognized by Ad Age and Modern Healthcare for Excellence in Digital Primary Care Marketing

Understanding the need to create an integrated marketing plan capable of targeting the right audiences to make a meaningful impact quickly, LIFT and Ballad Health partnered to curate data from a variety of sources—including diagnosis codes, demographics and consumer intelligence data supplemented by mixed-methods consumer/market insights with a rich ethnographic backbone—to inform a human-centered omnichannel marketing strategy.

“At LIFT Healthcare, we strive to leverage human understanding to design marketing and patient support programs that engage, educate and empower consumer competency. The awarded program ultimately resulted in a dramatic increase in consumer understanding and engagement—activating patients to engage in healthy behaviors and increasing both virtual and in-person visits to Ballad Health facilities across the Appalachian Highlands. Notably, LIFT was able to confirm and validate the effectiveness of Ballad Health’s marketing investment through their MarketIMPACTTM platform—a powerful and bespoke campaign measurement toolset capable of providing healthcare marketers with clear and defensible return-on-investment metrics by drawing clear connections between ad exposures, clinical encounters, and financial impact in a privacy-safe and HIPAA compliant environment.

“Prior to partnering with LIFT Healthcare on this groundbreaking initiative, our organization had no way of knowing with certainty the true efficacy of our marketing investment,” says Molly Luton, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Ballad Health. “By creatively leveraging innovative tools and consumer intelligence, our health system can now operate with greater confidence that our resources are being utilized most strategically, effectively and efficiently, all to the benefit of our communities by increasing access to healthcare for those who need it most.”

Hammes Healthcare celebrates opening of GBMC HealthCare Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building

The new Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building is one of two major capital projects Hammes is managing as part of GBMC’s Promise Project. The other is the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion, a new 70,000-square-foot cancer center that will open in early 2025. Hammes was first engaged by GBMC in June 2019 to develop the budget for the Promise Project program and facilitate the Certificate of Need (CON) process with the State of Maryland.

“I can say with certainty The Promise Project would not have finished on time and on budget without the skillful leadership of Hammes,” said Russ Sadler, GBMC Senior Director of Planning, Construction and Design. “Under their leadership, the project was completed on time, and on budget, something that was, and is, unheard of in today’s economic climate. We will be forever grateful for Hammes for not just leading but becoming part of our culture at GBMC.”

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside GBMC and our project partners over the past four years on The Promise Project,” said Nancy Connolly, President of Hammes Healthcare. “We are so proud to see the new GBMC Louis and Phyllis Friedman Building open to patients and look forward to our continued partnership with GBMC as we work to complete the new Sandra R. Berman Pavilion.”

American Forests partners with USDA Forest Service to expand reforestation across national forests

Activities under the partnership will include helping the Forest Service develop a climate-informed reforestation action plan for each region. The partners will also collaborate to engage and expand workforce and partnership opportunities with tribes and states, as well as rural and disadvantaged communities.

Enacted as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in late 2021, the REPLANT Act removed a cap on Forest Service funding for reforestation, allowing the agency to now access nearly ten times more in reforestation investments annually. American Forests helped catalyze the REPLANT Act, working in collaboration with bipartisan members of Congress.

“Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, USDA Forest Service and partners like American Forests are poised to make historic investments in reforestation as forests across the nation face extended droughts, catastrophic fires, pests and disease, all accelerated by climate change,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “The scale of this challenge means that we can’t do it alone, and this agreement is another step in making our forests – and communities – healthier, safer and more resilient.”

With this additional capacity, the Forest Service is now positioned to help address an estimated backlog of at least four million acres of National Forest System land in need of reforestation – a number that has jumped due to recent increases in severe wildfire.

“Reforestation is an important investment for the future and resiliency of forests across the country,” said Forest Service Chief Randy Moore. “This agreement with American Forests will help the agency reduce the backlog of reforestation needs to support wildfire and disaster recovery, identify future reforestation needs, and improve our ability to monitor the impact and outcomes of this important work.”

Together, the Forest Service and American Forests will use landscape-level planning and climate-informed restoration practices to advance goals identified in the agency’s National Forest System Reforestation Strategy and Secretary Vilsack’s June 2022 Order, which directed the Forest Service to restore and create climate-resilient forests.

Across the U.S., a growing backlog of National Forest System lands need reforestation, driven in significant part by the escalating impact of climate change on U.S. forests. Large, high-severity wildfires are driving 81 percent of reforestation need on national forests, outpacing the agency’s capacity to restore these lands following such fires. Prior to the REPLANT Act, the Forest Service had only been able to address six percent of the reforestation backlog each year.

Building from the Forest Service’s National Reforestation Strategy, American Forests and the agency will develop 10-year REPLANT Act implementation plans designed to bring about tailored reforestation solutions for each region of the National Forest System. This new agreement provides a strategic launch point for implementing these solutions.

“American Forests is proud to lead on REPLANT Act implementation through this comprehensive partnership with the Forest Service,” said Jad Daley, president and CEO of American Forests. “Together, we will accelerate climate-smart reforestation across national forests, helping to restore the health of these priceless public lands.”

ABOUT AMERICAN FORESTS: Secretary Vilsack Directs USDA Forest Service to Take Bold Action to Restore Forests, Improve Resilience, and Curb Climate Change. American Forests is the first national nonprofit conservation organization created in the U.S. Since its founding in 1875, the organization has been the pathfinders for the forest conservation movement. Its mission is to create healthy and resilient forests, from cities to wilderness, that deliver essential benefits for climate, people, water and wildlife. The organization advances its mission through forestry, innovation, place-based partnerships to plant and restore forests and movement building.

ABOUT USDA FOREST SERVICE: The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service manages more than 192 million acres of public land as national forests and grasslands. Grounded in world-class science and technology – and rooted in communities – the Forest Service connects people to nature and each other. As a federal agency in service to the American people, the Forest Service cares for shared natural resources in ways that promote lasting economic, ecological, and social vitality. In doing this, the agency supports nature in sustaining life. To learn more about the Forest Service, visit Home | US Forest Service (usda.gov)
