New NPG Forum Paper Examines Uphill Battle to Counter Population Growth in the U.S.

Slowing Down Population Growth in the U.S. is Not Impossible

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — A new Forum paper from Negative Population Growth has revealed that ‘smart growth’ won’t be enough to solve the population crisis in the United States. The paper, titled Spoiler Alert: ‘Smart Growth’ Won’t Save the Day, by Mark Cromer, examines the challenges posed by the country’s rapidly increasing population and the need for meaningful dialogue to produce policy initiatives that can reverse the trend. Cromer begins his work by noting: “With more than 8 billion people now crowding a planet that continues to convulse with the conflict and corruption that drives mass migrations, the United States confronts its own steadily escalating population growth and the challenges it presents in both the short-term and over the long haul.”

This Forum paper highlights the visible symptoms of population growth, such as the abject chaos of mass migration, the fierce competition for employment and housing, and the escalating homeless crisis. It also examines the role of U.S. society in the population crisis, sharing that “throughout the past half-century, much of U.S. society has lived something of a double life; on the one hand, advocating for ever more environmental protections and often leading preservation efforts (here and abroad), but on the other hand, indulging a seemingly insatiable appetite for more and bigger things. From TVs-turned-Home Theaters to cars-turned-tanks and homes turned McMansions, a powerful and perpetual desire for ‘more’ and the instinctive sense that the party is about to end, one way or the other, has been evident for the better part of the past half-century.”

Additionally, Cromer does not shy away from accurately identifying immigration as the main driver of U.S. population growth, explaining: “In 1965, the foreign-born population of the U.S. was just five percent. Pew’s 2015 report noted that more than half of the 131 million people added to the U.S. population between 1965 and 2015 were the result of immigration and births to immigrants.” He also spotlights the ineffectiveness of politicians unwilling to go the distance, writing: “To have a meaningful dialogue that produces policy initiatives designed to reverse population growth simply appears beyond the reach of our present political leadership in the United States.”

Taking on the media, Cromer dissects comments on population growth made by various figures and points out inaccuracies along the way. Zeroing in on a piece written for Nat Geo, he writes: “…where one of his (journalist Robert Kunzig) demographic takeaways was that if we wanted to give the entire population of the planet a little more breathing room than the City of Angels, everyone would still fit rather comfortably into Texas.” Cromer then adds: “Such musings are a sly deception based on a journalistic sleight of hand that conflates empirical geographic space and the human physical footprint with ‘best case’ hypothetical projections surrounding resource availability and consumption rates among a bevy of other basic quality of life metrics.”

This paper is a call to action for U.S. citizens to take a stand and demand meaningful dialogue and policy initiatives that can reverse the population crisis. It is a reminder that smart growth alone won’t solve the problem. In his conclusion, Cromer tells readers: “More than energy, arable land and viable living space, reliable access to fresh water for nearly a half billion people here is going to be chief among the resources that should guide population sustainability decisions in the years ahead.”

Founded in 1972, NPG is a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to educating the American public and political leaders regarding the damaging effects of population growth. We believe that our nation is already vastly overpopulated in terms of the long-range carrying capacity of its resources and environment. NPG advocates the adoption of its Proposed National Population Policy, with the goal of eventually stabilizing U.S. population at a sustainable level – far lower than today’s. We do not simply identify the problems – we propose solutions. For more information, visit our website at NPG.org, follow us on Facebook @NegativePopulationGrowth or follow us on Twitter @npg_org.

New Study Shows Point-of-care Genetics May Improve Uptake, Reduce Racial Disparities

Retrospective data was drawn from 15 clinical sites across 6 states and 14,527 patients. Patients at each of the sites were screened using CancerIQ’s digital risk assessment software, which determines hereditary cancer risk based on comprehensive risk factors and the latest evidence-based guidelines. Based on the clinical workflow deployed at the site, patients who screened at high risk were either: referred to see a genetic counselor outside the practice (referral workflow) or offered genetic counseling at the point-of-care and tested same-day or at a later date in the same practice (POC workflow).

“The identification of inequities at every stage of the genetic service delivery process will enhance our understanding of possible drivers of disparities along the care continuum and facilitate interventions to ensure equitable access to genetic services,” said Catharine Wang, PhD, Associate Professor, Community Health Sciences, Boston University School of Public Health.

“Now that we have more information about what is driving disparities in genomic testing and how to solve for it, we need to put it into clinical practice,” added Dr. Olufunmilayo (Funmi) Olopade, MD, FAACR, Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Advisor, CancerIQ. “I am proud to be part of a team at CancerIQ that is transforming the delivery of high quality care and is laser focused on closing disparities in access.”

Fewer than 1 in 5 high-risk individuals receive genetic testing, and most of those patients have not discussed testing with a healthcare provider. This leaves patients unaware of their risk and the preventive services available to them. Additionally, evidence shows barriers to testing disproportionately affect people of color. This study demonstrates providers equipped to discuss and act on the results of cancer risk assessment with patients at the point-of-care may improve genetic counseling rates and eliminate disparities in testing uptake among racial/ethnic minority groups.

“Comprehensive cancer risk assessment integrated with genetic counseling and testing is a complex process. The CancerIQ platform simplifies this process for your everyday clinician, so that more patients can receive this service from the people they already know and trust,” said Feyi Ayodele, CEO and cofounder of CancerIQ.

About CancerIQ

CancerIQ is the only cancer-focused precision health platform that empowers healthcare providers to detect cancer earlier and prevent it altogether across all patient populations. Integrated directly into real-time EHR workflows, CancerIQ makes it easy to gather comprehensive patient data, automatically map it to the latest evidence-based guidelines, and expand access to personalized care plans, cutting-edge clinical solutions, and genomic innovations. Rare Cannabinoid Company Launches THC + THCV Uplift Gummies

THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is a natural, stimulating cannabinoid found mostly in African landrace cannabis sativa plants and is believed to increase focus and concentration while controlling hunger. However, THCV is only found in tiny amounts in cannabis and hemp, and was only able to be extracted in larger quantities in recent years. In fact, Rare Cannabinoid Company was the first to create a pure THCV oil tincture and THCV CBD oil in 2020, followed by the strongest THCV gummies on the market.

“Our THCV oils and gummies are extremely popular for fitness, exercise, and work. Now, our THC + THCV Gummies add a new dimension to our THCV offerings,” said a company spokesperson.

Each THC + THCV Uplift Gummy contains a very large amount of rare cannabinoid THCV – 12.5mg – as well as 2.5mg hemp-derived Delta-9-THC, and 10mg of CBD. The premium brand says the THC + THCV Gummies were designed to offer the positive benefits of Delta-9-THC without overwhelming sleepiness or hunger. The sweet lemon flavored gummies are not only delicious but also vegan, catering to a diverse range of preferences.

Key Features of THC : THCV Uplift Gummies:

  • THCV: A rare cannabinoid with opposite effects to THC, THCV may control appetite and increase energy, focus, and concentration. Like their THCV Gummies, Rare Cannabinoid Company’s new THC + THCV Gummies boast an impressive 12.5mg of THCV per gummy, the largest amount available in any gummy on the market.
  • Delta-9-THC: Known for its dreamy properties, Delta-9-THC provides relief from occasional discomfort and temporary nausea. Each gummy contains 2.5mg derived from legal industrial U.S. hemp, ensuring federal legality with less than 0.3% THC.
  • CBD: With 10mg of CBD per gummy, the full spectrum blend enhances the entourage effect, promoting stress resilience, balance, and calm.

What Sets THC + THCV Gummies Apart?
The unique combination of Delta-9-THC, THCV, and CBD creates a synergistic effect that delivers both uplifting and dreamy sensations. The high level of THCV may also counteract the munchies commonly associated with THC consumption.

Shipping Information
All of the brand’s THC Gummies are federally legal and ship to all U.S. locations. However, unlike their other products, they cannot be shipped abroad. Purchase is limited to adults 21+ and the company warns people not to drive or operate machinery after consumption. Ingredients, suggested use, warnings and more can be found on their website.

Other products with THCV or THC:

  • THCV Gummies: For those seeking the energizing, appetite-controlling properties of THCV without any THC effects, Rare Cannabinoid Company also offers THCV gummies with Zero THC.
  • Pure THCV Oil Tincture: This tincture contains 500mg THCV in certified organic MCT coconut oil.
  • THCV + CBD Oil Tincture: A one-to-one blend of pure THCV with full spectrum Hawaiian CBD oil.
  • THC + CBC Mood Gummies: Mood Gummies containing 5mg Delta-9-THC and high levels of CBC oil aim to induce feelings of happiness and contentment.
  • THC + CBG Relief Gummies: Relief Gummies contain a very large amount of CBG oil – 30mg CBG – for discomfort relief. CBG effects are enhanced by 2.5mg Delta-9-THC and 10mg CBD.
  • THC + CBN Sleep Gummies: Sleep Gummies contain 30mg CBN for relaxation and sleep, which is heightened by 5mg Delta-9-THC and 10mg CBD.

Rare Cannabinoid Company also offers full spectrum Maui-grown CBD, broad spectrum Hawaiian Choice CBD oil tinctures, topicals, Pet CBD, and oils and gummies of a vast selection of rare cannabinoids including CBDV, CBDA, and CBGA.

In the Media:
Rare Cannabinoid Company’s products, including their THC Gummies and THCV Gummies, have been featured in reputable publications such as L.A. Weekly, Leafly, High Times, Herb Magazine, CBD Oracle, Hawaii Business Magazine, The Washington Times, and Emerald Magazine. These articles provide insights into the benefits of cannabinoids and highlight the unique offerings of Rare Cannabinoid Company.

Alley Cat Rescue Takes Stance Against US National Park Service Plan to Remove Cats from San Juan Historical Site, Call for Public to Become Involved via Petition

Alley Cat Rescue supports trap-neuter-return (TNR) of the cats, which would include sterilizing all the cats and vaccinating them against rabies, and removal of kittens young enough to be socialized from the park and into adoption programs. The NPS has said that the population of cats has actually increased over the years, despite local nonprofits and volunteers doing TNR. However, sources doing the TNR have explained to ACR that the cause for the increase is rampant pet abandonment that the NPS and local government have not taken steps to correct.

President and founder of ACR, Louise Holton, has been practicing and researching community cat management for 30 years. She explains that the NPS’ plan to rid the area of cats would be only a temporary solution: “Catch-and-kill simply does not work. New cats will arrive (or be dumped) and the cycle of breeding will continue—it’s been proven that TNR is the only way to control outdoor community cats.” As Holton further explains, cats who have been sterilized and then returned to their outdoor homes guard the territory, thereby keeping new, unsterilized cats from moving in and multiplying. Of course, as Holton pointed out, it defeats population control efforts when cats are continuously abandoned in an area.

ACR is asking the public to help persuade the NPS to cancel their removal plan and instead apply their resources to aiding in TNR and preventing callous cat abandonment at the historic site by signing their petition, available at https://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/361/081/110/.

Alley Cat Rescue is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of all cats: domestic, stray, abandoned, and feral. ACR advocates for humane nonlethal control of feral cats. For more information, visit their website https://www.saveacat.org.

Report for America adds newsrooms, opens applications for reporters

Newsrooms were asked to define the most compelling gaps in their coverage. Based on feedback from the field:

  • More than half will cover diverse communities
  • Nearly half will report on the environment
  • Some 35% of the positions will focus on rural communities
  • A third will cover state politics

The selected newsrooms add 11 new positions as part of the Mississippi River Basin Ag and Water Desk. Seven beats involve statehouse coverage for The Associated Press. The positions also include a new partnership with the North Carolina Collaborative, led by Scalawag Magazine and The Assembly, which will bring a strong new local news cohort to North Carolina with reporters at five outlets: The Assembly, IndyWeek, CityView Today, Blue Ridge Public Radio, and WHQR.

The full list of new newsrooms and beats can be found here.

Now that the newsroom selections have been made, Report for America is seeking talented, service-minded journalists and photographers to join its reporting corps—a two-year program (with an option for three years) that delivers a wide range of benefits to its corps members.

  • Significant Beats: Report for America corps members cover a variety of beats, including healthcare, statehouse, climate, education, city hall, local business, communities of color, sports, religion, photography, and more.
  • Training and Mentorship: Report for America offers more than 70 training sessions per year, from experienced journalists and other experts, helping corps members sharpen their skills. We also pair you with a national mentor at the top of their game for additional skill-based/coverage gap-related support.
  • All-Around Support: In addition to a robust peer network of fellow corps members who are covering similar beats and living in nearby towns, Report for America’s regional managers—deeply experienced, award-winning journalists— are assigned to support every corps member and partner newsroom.
  • Community Service: Corps members volunteer their time on a student journalism or youth media project. The goal is to support the media literacy of young people by helping them produce stories about the world around them.
  • Springboard to Career Success: Report for America graduates get hired by their newsrooms or by other regional, national, and international outlets. Corps members win dozens of state, regional, and national awards.

“Report for America invites journalists from diverse backgrounds to weave their unique narratives into the fabric of local newsrooms. With a dedicated beat as their canvas, these storytellers ensure that every community’s voice is heard and critical issues are amplified,” said Earl Johnson, vice president of recruitment and alumni engagement at Report for America. “Through Report for America, journalists find not just a job but a calling—a perfect opportunity to make a profound difference where it matters most.”

The deadline to apply is Jan. 31, 2024. Report for America is hosting several information sessions between now and then. To learn more, visit reportforamerica.org/apply or contact a member of the recruitment team at [email protected].
