National University Paves the Way for Service Members to Transition into AI and Data Science Careers

With prestigious National Science Foundation grant, Veteran-founded National University announces new bachelor’s degree helping active-duty military and Veterans up- and reskill for careers in data science and AI

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 21, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — National University, a nonprofit and Veteran-founded Minority Serving Institution that serves 50,000 degree-seeking students and 80,000 workforce and professional development students annually, today announced the development of a new B.S. Data Science degree aimed at helping military service members and Veterans transition into the in-demand fields of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This effort is made possible through a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and will play a vital role in addressing the growing demand for professionals in these rapidly evolving sectors.

“Even as we grapple with understanding the vast and still emerging capabilities of artificial intelligence, we face an equally important obligation to ensure that this new AI and technology-driven economy is accessible for every learner and worker, including those who have served our nation in uniform,” said Dr. Jodi Reeves, National University department chair of data science and the associate director for education, diversity, and outreach for TILOS. “The U.S. armed services have long been at the forefront of artificial intelligence and data innovation, so we have a profound opportunity to align the talents of dedicated service members in transition and Veterans to meet the needs of a fast-changing—and increasingly tech-driven—economy where these same technologies will play an outsized role.”

Every year, approximately 500,000 members of the U.S. military depart active duty and begin the transition to the civilian workforce. The initiative comes as a response to the escalating demand for skilled individuals in data science and AI technology, with data science being the most in-demand job in the industry. As these fields continue to shape industries across the globe, the demand for experts in this domain is at an all-time high. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, data scientist roles are projected to grow 35% between 2022 and 2032, at a much faster rate than the average for all other occupations.

In 2021, National University was selected to be part of a prestigious team awarded a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for its contribution to The Institute for Learning-enabled Optimization at Scale (TILOS), an AI institute led by the University of California, San Diego, alongside partners such as Yale University, MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Texas at Austin. Through the grant, National University will receive $100,000 annually for five years to support faculty members developing new curriculum, in order to help the university serve its diverse student demographics, including working adults and members of the military community.

The AI reskilling program is one of several programs and initiatives created by National University in response to the growing demand for skilled workers who are passionate about the field of data science and AI technology. Since the AI institute’s inception, the AI specialization of M.S. Data Science has grown to be the largest specialization at National University, with 56% of the students being military affiliated. The new B.S. of Data Science degree will include concentrations in AI and machine learning, cybersecurity analytics, and bioinformatics. New courses begin in February 2024.

“To make good on our commitment to serving military and Veteran students to the best of our ability, we need to continuously find ways to bridge the divide between civilian systems of education and employment and our modern military we must evolve the programs we offer, and the ways in which we serve this unique population of learners,” said Meg O’Grady, Senior Vice President, Military and Government Programs at National University. “This is about creating inclusive pathways to careers in data, technology and artificial intelligence for Veterans and service members in transition—and finding new ways to align military skills and credentials with the needs of the emerging AI economy.”

Throughout its 50-year history, National University has established a strong reputation for its focus on serving military-connected students and Veterans. Today, its student population reflects the shifting — and highly diverse — demographics of higher education today. Approximately 70 percent of its students take the majority of their classes online. More than 25 percent identify as Hispanic, and 10 percent identify as Black. More than 80 percent of undergraduates are transfer students. The average age of its students is 33. And about 1 in 4 students are active-duty service members or Veterans.

Established in 1971 by retired U.S. Navy Capt. David Chigos, the university also has a rich history of commitment to military personnel. Recognized as a 2022-2023 Military Friendly School and a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, National University proudly offers over 190 degree programs, tailored to meet the needs of active-duty military members, Veterans, and their dependents.

National University’s four-week course structure is designed to accommodate the unique demands of military life, enabling students to pursue their degrees without disrupting training, service and deployment schedules. In addition, the university’s Veteran Center assists in the transition from military to civilian life, offering guidance and support services. National University also utilizes transfer-friendly policies that enable students to leverage previously earned college credits, professional certifications, and military training.

$32 million NIA grant boosts long COVID cognition study of under-studied populations including South Texas Hispanics

  •     Hispanic Mexican Americans in San Antonio and Laredo, Texas.
  •     Hispanics and African Americans of Caribbean descent in the Bronx, N.Y.
  •     Non-tribal Native Americans in Seattle, Wash.
  •     Amerindians in Jujuy, Argentina.
  •     Africans of Yoruba ancestry in Ibadan, Nigeria.

“Cognitive impairment is seen in some adults over 60 who are experiencing long COVID, and this impairment appears to be progressive. We will study the genetics of older individuals in these specific lineage cohorts that proved to be at higher risk for COVID sequalae during the pandemic,” said the study’s lead principal investigator, Gabriel de Erausquin, MD, PhD, MSc, professor of neurology at UT Health San Antonio’s Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

The researchers will perform whole-genome sequencing on samples from 4,300 study participants to understand genetic variations that protect some older people against long COVID cognitive impairment. They will likewise seek to discover variations that make other people over 60 more prone to impairment.

“What is the underlying biology?” de Erausquin asked. “We have some preliminary genetic data already, but we’ve only looked at 500 individuals, so we are early in the process.”

Participant recruitment is beginning in San Antonio and Laredo, he said. In Webb County, the Biggs Institute is partnering with the Laredo Health Department and The University of Texas Education and Research Center at Laredo.

The researchers will also analyze biomarkers from blood samples taken at intervals over the five years. Proteins and antibodies in plasma are expected to shed light on immune responses over time in the participants.

The team will conduct magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, as well, to determine whether there is shrinkage in brain structures related to memory function.

“Some of the expectation is that our collective efforts will illuminate genetic and other factors that predispose people to developing Alzheimer’s disease after COVID-19 and other infections,” de Erausquin said.

The Alzheimer’s Association is a funding contributor to this three-continent initiative. The association’s support will go to Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., which is leading the biomarkers research core of the study, and to Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, which is leading a study of biomarkers as predictors of outcomes.

International consortium

The Alzheimer’s Association Consortium on Chronic Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 began in 2021 and includes the participant enrolling sites. “Seed money from the Alzheimer’s Association supported the creation of this international consortium,” de Erausquin said. “This earlier funding also sponsored data collection in Argentina during the first couple of years of the pandemic.”

The Argentine sample is from inhabitants of the Andes region on the country’s border with Chile and Bolivia. De Erausquin spent time there during and after the acute phase of the pandemic getting the effort underway.

Reflecting demographics

South Texas is another target. “The San Antonio and Laredo sample will be 60% to 90% Hispanic, matching the ethnic makeup of the region,” de Erausquin said.

The goal of the five recruitment sites is to identify and enroll a study population that is as representative of under-represented minorities as possible and consists of ethnic groups most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

UT Health San Antonio is the primary grant awardee, and subcontracts will go to Albert Einstein School of Medicine, to the University of Washington in Seattle, to the Laredo Health Department, to Fundacion FULTRA in Argentina and the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.

Notes

The project is titled “Interaction between SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Ancestral Genomic Variations in the Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease” (ISAVRAD).

De Erausquin is the Zachry Foundation Distinguished Professor of Alzheimer’s Clinical Care and Research and the Greehey Family Foundation Distinguished University Professor of Alzheimer’s Research at UT Health San Antonio. He conducts studies at the Biggs Institute and the Research Imaging Institute at UT Health San Antonio.

The Biggs Institute is a national center of excellence that, in collaboration with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, is the state’s only Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) as designated by the National Institute on Aging.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), a primary driver for San Antonio’s $44.1 billion health care and biosciences sector, is the largest academic research institution in South Texas with an annual research portfolio of more than $400 million. Driving substantial economic impact with its six professional schools, a diverse workforce of 7,900, an annual expense budget of $1.46 billion and clinical practices that provide 2.6 million patient visits each year, UT Health San Antonio plans to add more than 1,500 higher-wage jobs over the next five years to serve San Antonio, Bexar County and South Texas. CancerIQ Adds Dr. Jeffrey Weitzel, MD as Strategic Advisor

“Dr. Weitzel has developed a valuable, multidimensional perspective working across education, industry and clinical sectors, all of which are integral to our business model,” said Feyi Ayodele, CEO and co-founder of CancerIQ. “We are excited to tap this unparalleled expertise and officially bring Dr. Weitzel on board to help take CancerIQ to the next level.”

Dr. Weitzel has collaborated with CancerIQ since the platform’s early product development stages. CancerIQ first partnered with Dr. Weitzel to conduct a rigorous analysis of the barriers clinicians face when putting cancer genetics training into practice. This research paved the way for CancerIQ’s purpose-built precision prevention platform, which is now empowering genetics-trained professionals to apply their knowledge in over 225 diverse clinical locations across the country.

“Dr. Weitzel and I have worked together for over 30 years in cancer genomics,” said Olufunmilayo Olopade, MD, FACP, Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder, CancerIQ. “I am excited to have an esteemed peer on board to help continue to improve our platform and service offerings.”

As a strategic advisor, Dr. Weitzel will work with CancerIQ to advance translational research in the delivery of cancer genetics and genomics. In alignment with the Panel’s recommendations to expand access to genetics to support cancer prevention and early detection, CancerIQ remains focused on identifying barriers to access and accelerating digital solutions that make these life-saving tools accessible to all patients. CancerIQ also joined the national Cancer Moonshot CancerX coalition, a public-private partnership for digital innovation in oncology, as part of its commitment to delivering on this mission at the highest levels. Dr. Weitzel’s expertise will help CancerIQ continue to advance the goals of CancerX and the President’s Cancer Panel.

“Bringing cancer genomics into everyday care can be a challenge due to many factors, including provider expertise, genetic testing access and long-term medical management. CancerIQ’s efforts to provide critical practice support address these challenges closely align with my personal mission to expand access to cancer risk assessment for all patients.” said Dr. Weitzel. “As a strategic advisor to CancerIQ, I look forward to driving continued innovation in this space.”

Dr. Weitzel’s past research emphasizes precision prevention and implementation science to expand access to cancer risk reduction tools and address disparities at both the local and global levels. Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation Names Jayden Rodriguez Winner of the 2023 “People Saving People” Award

Amy and Jayden worked out at the same gym and had become friends. The remarkable rescue occurred at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Amy had contacted Jayden, then 22, asking him to stay at her house for a while to make sure she was okay. She went to bed asking him to lock the door when he left.

Jayden sensed something was off and so he waited in the living room. Later he heard “a loud snoring noise” coming from Amy’s bedroom. He rushed there and saw that her face was turning white, her eyes were rolling back, and her lips were turning purple. He immediately called 911, lifted her off the bed, and started CPR. He continued CPR for eight minutes until EMS arrived.

After EMS took over, Jayden went above and beyond by searching social media to find her relatives and advise them of the situation.

“I have listened to the entire 911 call and am unbelievably blown away at how focused and calm he was able to remain during this terrifying situation,” said Amy.

In recognizing Jayden, Mary Newman, president of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, said there were dozens of nominations for the award and it was challenging to select just one winner. “Everyone wins when people nearby act quickly and decisively to help victims of sudden cardiac arrest,” she said. “Reviewers, however, decided that this case best exemplified the critical importance of immediate proactive bystander action when sudden cardiac arrest occurs.”

Amy graciously accepted the award on Jayden’s behalf, sharing her experience before a large conference audience. Jayden will receive a ZOLL AED contributed by CoroMed that he may donate to a location of his choice.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. It strikes people of all ages who may seem to be healthy, even children and teens. When SCA happens, the person collapses and doesn’t respond or breathe normally. They may gasp or shake as if having a seizure. SCA leads to death in minutes if the person does not get help right away. Survival depends on people nearby calling 911, starting CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator, or AED (if available) as soon as possible.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation is a national community benefit 501(c)(3) organization. Our vision is to eliminate preventable death and disability from sudden cardiac arrest and support people affected by SCA. Our mission is to raise awareness of SCA and promote initiatives that help save lives through education, research, and community. The Importance of Mental Health

Mental health is one of the most important aspects of our health because it greatly affects not only our physical and emotional well-being, but also our ability to interact with others and cope with the stresses of life. Mental health encompasses our ability to think, feel, and respond to the world around us. It is also the foundation of our ability to relate to others and make healthy choices.

Mental health can vary from person to person, and can change over time. Factors such as stress, life events, and the environment all play a role in how our mental health develops and evolves. It is important to understand the importance of maintaining our mental health, as it can have a direct impact on our lives.

When it comes to mental health, it is important to remember that it is a spectrum, meaning that it leasts from one extreme to the other. On one end we can experience mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. It is important to recognize when one is facing mental health issues and to seek help from a professional. On the other end of the spectrum are those who may have very high levels of mental well-being, often referred to as emotional intelligence. People that understand how to manage their emotions, how to be mindful and practice self-care are usually better able to cope with life’s challenges and maintain mental health.

One of the most important aspects of good mental health is learning to develop healthy coping skills. Everyone must learn how to recognize stressors and how to manage them in a healthy way, rather than resorting to substances or other unhealthy coping mechanisms. It is also important to learn healthy communication skills, as communication plays a large role in how people interact with each other.

It is also essential to learn how to engage in self-care activities such as getting enough rest, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in activities that bring pleasure. These activities can help to improve mental health and reduce stress. Additionally, learning how to be mindful and practice relaxation techniques, such as yoga, meditation, and Tai Chi can help to reduce stress and improve mental health.

Maintaining good mental health is essential for overall physical and emotional well-being. It is important to recognize when one’s mental health is not up to par and to seek help when needed. And, it is essential to learn how to develop healthy coping skills and engage in self-care activities to maintain mental health.
